    Never seen a QB get LESS blame for throwing a SB losing pick than Wilson

    • @samuelhain2712
      @samuelhain2712 Před 8 lety +152

      +Kazador -Nonsense. Wilson stared at the receiver the whole time, giving the play away. Wilson's short for a QB, and probably couldn't see Butler breaking on the ball. Wilson's a glorified game manager. He's ineffective without Lynch.

    • @samuelhain2712
      @samuelhain2712 Před 8 lety +38

      +nightowlhunter3 -Totally agree. If Tony Romo, Jay Cutler, Eli or Peyton Manning etc had thrown that pick, the media would have blamed the loss completely on them. The media skipped right past Wilson (the guy who threw the INT) and attacked his coach for the play call. IDK why media handles Wilson with kid gloves, maybe because he's not white. Most QBs are tall. They need to see over the OL and defensive line. Wilson's short. It's doubtful he could see Butler breaking on the ball. Being short is a major reason why Seattle rolls Wilson out a lot; he can't see over the OL and DL. It's why he's not a pocket QB. Brady's amazing because he does so many subtle things. He can see coverages (like Butler's ) developing, and throw to a 3rd, 4th, or 5th option. It's one of the many things he does well that simple-minded people don't see. They'd rather blame his incredible, long term success on deflated footballs. Stupid.

    • @samuelhain2712
      @samuelhain2712 Před 8 lety +29

      +nightowlhunter3 -Yes, Wilson could've thrown a low, better placed ball, and Lockette could've used his body to protect it. Carroll's explanation about the play call made some sense: Seattle had only one timeout left. NE had its goal line D in, and Lynch wasn't good on goal line runs. A short pass has low odds of being picked off, and, if incomplete, stops the clock. Belichick has nerves of steel. Millions of people watching on TV were screaming at him to call a timeout. But like Brady, he's a situational genius. He could see Seattle was waiting for him to call one. When he didn't, it puzzled Seattle, and more or less forced them to throw a pass (which Belichick preferred), in order to stop the clock (if it failed).

      +zerpbrandon
      College scouts said Wilson sometimes couldn't see over the O and D lines.
      That's why Seattle rolls him out a lot.
      It looks like Wilson didn't see Butler breaking on the ball. If he did, he would've thrown it away (or to another receiver).
      Brady does all of these subtle things and more within seconds
      It's why he's elite.

They had time to run more than 1 play but they only had one time out. It was the Genius of the Patriots that won that game by Bill Belecheck not calling the time out he threw them all out of whack and there thoroughness as a team practicing that pick play is what really won the super bowl. Even if they would have handed it off to Lynch he wouldn't have made it it was destiny bra. Destiny all right.

      That is actually a common play on the goal line, not just by Seattle. If you pay attention to the whole video, one of the coaches mentions that Browner had seen enough of those pick plays in his career and recognized it, telling Malcom who his assignment was, and Browner only played for the Pats that year, iirc. It's preached by Bill all the time, situational football, and I am sure you have heard it from him a thousand times. He spends a lot of time preparing for various situations that may come up during a game, and it has paid off many times. Honestly, the two receivers were in earshot of Browner telling Malcom what was happening. If I were one of them, that would have told me they know what's coming, and to somehow relay that or call a time out. But my guess is they didn't have any instruction on what to do in that situation...seeing they know how to cover it, and what to do at that point. Not knowing, they just ran the play they were told to. Seattle had the play clock winding down and hurried the play. The bottom line is this, New England was prepared for that situation...Seattle wasn't.@@oz1751

    One of the big myths arising from this game is that Wilson's pass was one of the worst calls ever. I don't think it was a huge blunder like everyone says. Lynch had his chance to get it in and Hightower stopped him with a marvelous tackle, so Seattle made a quick decision to mix things up with a short pick play. But Seattle, momentarily high on Kearse's catch and without a chance to mentally settle down, forgot about the intensive preparation of their opponents. New England had practiced against all kinds of strange plays, including that one, and they were able to anticipate it. Whether they could stop it...that came down to Butler, and he delivered. It would have been a solid play, and probably a touchdown, against most other NFL teams--in which case no one would be complaining about it today. Against Belichick and the Patriots, it sealed their doom.

    • @mbvglider
      @mbvglider Před 7 lety +38

      Seattle did blunder, but it wasn't all on that play. Hawks needed a touchdown. It was 1:06 left when the Kearse catch happens, and he is pushed out of bounds to stop the clock. Then, the Hawks couldn't get a play off before the play clock ran down on 1st down. That means they only had one timeout left. As long as Bill didn't bail them out by calling a timeout, 1:06 is not enough time to run four running plays with only one timeout left, so there are some limitations as to play calling. We all knew first down would be a run, but that was stopped, so clock ran. With 26 seconds left when the 2nd down play was snapped, we knew that either 2nd or 3rd down would have to be an attempted pass, so they decided to pass on 2nd down, which makes sense considering if you didn't pass on 2nd and you don't make a touchdown, you would have to call a timeout and be forced to pass on 3rd and everybody would know it, whereas if the pass fell incomplete on 2nd (which happens almost all of the time at the goal line), you still keep the option of passing OR running on 3rd down. So they actually did the logical thing. But if you think about it, they burned themselves when they burned the 2nd timeout at 1:06. If they didn't call that timeout, they would have had the full playbook available to me on all four downs. By only having one timeout left, they pretty much forced themselves into a situation in which 2nd down had to be a passing play.

      @Truebells24 Před 7 lety +24

      The most incredible part of the whole situation is Bill Belichick not taking a time out. He was quoted that he just thought "they should play through it" but I think deep down he knew he could get them into a passing situation if he let the clock run down a bit and let the emotions and panic settle in on the Seahawks sideline

      It isn't like other teams haven't been caught breaking the rules over the last 15 years. It is just that everyone hates the Pats for winning so much that every time they get caught for stuff that everyone else gets caught for, everyone who hates them convinces themselves that this is the reason that they win. It is kind of pathetic really.
      Git gud.

    This is one of the greatest NFL videos ever. It's smart and very well designed and directed. It gets you behind the scenes to understand how important a great coaching staff + practice, practice, practice are to success on the field. I learned so much about the play that I never knew before, even though I had watched the highlight dozens of times over the years. The pure joy that the coaches took in this play -- after all, they're not the ones who have to execute it -- was inspiring. It makes you shake your head that Butler was benched in the Philly Super Bowl; he deserved a "pass" no matter what dumb thing he may have said to someone in the hours or days before the game. Benching him was vindictive, childish and, worst of all, deeply unappreciative of his historic contribution to NFL history ((just listen to any expert who are all blown away by it). It revealed a fatal flaw in the Patriot Way which played a role in Tom Brady's decision to finish out his career in Tampa Bay. That fatal flaw was hubris. Humility and pride were called for -- and it didn't happen. Butler would never be the same. That "collateral damage" made the benching decision all the more unforgivable.

    Just a day that I will never forget 😢 watching this game with my family and that Kearse catch and us thinking that it was all over. Lynch getting that 1st run out after that Kearse catch and thinking that they are gonna run the ball again and score. Yelling at Belichick threw the screen for not taking the TO. Never will I ever (for some reason I comtemplate why I would ever) question Belichick for his calls. He is hands down the one of my best head coaches ever. To see them throw that ball and Butler intercepts it was the best sports day of my life. I remember after that INT me and my bro jumping up and down like Brady did. Screaming and yelling. Something that I will remember forever. I know our time as the top dogs in the NFL isn't going to last forever but i'm sure glad these types of sports moments happened for me early in my childhood. I've been apart of 4 super bowls 3 world series 1 nba finals and 1 stanley cup victory for Boston and even apart of a bunch of playoff games that honestly makes us one of the best sports cities in the country. Not hating on any other teams out there but when you look at Boston and how we only have one sports team per sport where states/cities in Texas, New York, Florida and California have 2-3 sports team per sport, you realize how great of a sports city we are.
