  • Alfredo sauce? Chicken on pizza? Fake Parmesan cheese? Mozzarella from Wisconsin? When it comes to grocery shopping in the US, these are just some of the food monstrosities Italians have to deal with (and also one of the reasons why our mammas and nonnas need to ship food all the way from Italy) Buon appetito...kinda!

    In this new mini-series, Marco sarcastically unveils what it means to be an "Italian abroad" ("Italiano all'estero") living in America, and reveals a few survival tips for all the 'Mama's boys' out there. Of course with a pinch of Italian sass and attitude ;) Enjoy!

    This video made me smile so much. My husband does most of the cooking in my household, and he's a mega Chinese-American foodie living in Switzerland. Grocery shopping for the Asian ingredients we want here has been such a struggle. We've literally brought back bottles of sake and mirin from Paris that are about 1/5 the price. This very relatable for expats and foodies.

    Love your new series Marco! Have you shopped in a Kroger's in SF? Many of their stores now carry Murray's Cheeses -- Murray's is a big importer in NYC. I get my pecorino and parmigiano in a Kroger's here in Colorado; some of their branches carry many other imported cheeses. I am 71 and am happy American stores have gradually carried more international products over the years. I have been to Italy 6 times so far; my partner and I are going to Bologna next year for a month. And I've seen many changes there -- in 1976 it was almost impossible to get more than 1 or 2 ice cubes in a drink; now they're more generous. I was surprised having lunch in Portofino in 2006 that they brought grated pecorino to put on linguine with clams -- I know many Italians still think cheese on seafood dishes is a travesty! And portion sizes have definitely gotten bigger in Italian restaurants -- I think a bad influence of us overweight American tourists who expect too much!

    What most Americans think is Italian food is crap. Olive Garden? Chef Boy-ar-dee? They're merda, Several years ago, several friends and I went to local Italian restaurant, I was the last to order. I ordered the surf 'n' turf. Everyone looked at me and said, "You're the only Italian here in our group and you ordered steak and lobster". I replied that my old Italia great-grandmother, grandmother and aunts would smack me upside the head if I ordered this crap. I guess growing up around people born in Italy made me spoiled me from ordering "Italian" food in a restaurant.

    It's difficult to even bring foods back from Europe. So many stupid laws and regulations around food in the US. No fresh meats, even cured meats are sometimes "impounded". Some cheeses you can get by the inspectors (sniffer dog) and others you can't.....sometimes I've had cheese taken that the year before, and 2 year before that, I brought in. Cheese must be pasteurized in the US. So, if they catch you with unpasteurized cheese, in the trash bin it goes. It's so sad. :(
    At one time SF had a huge Italian population. I haven't lived there since 1994, but there's got to be some shops that have authentic Italian foods someplace. Try the North Beach area, or the north end of the Embarcadero.
    Good luck my friend!! Good, authentic food can be hard to find. I have Spanish heritage and I've found a wonderful store through the internet that ships authentic Spanish foods. It's not cheap, but cheaper than flying to Spain to get it. Maybe there's something like that available for Italian foods for those really hard to get items.

    • @ZakhadWOW
      @ZakhadWOW Před 3 lety +1

      City names are according to fairly old Language translations. FIrenze is actually further from the Latin "Florentia" than "Florence is. Many of the names we use in English are actually the ones that came with Norman French. Naples, Rome, FLorence, TUrin, Milan thos are all the French names for the cities (but Frenchies use the appropriate accent). German ones are a trip: Neapel, Rom, FLorenz, Mailand, Venedig for example. Spanish ones are closer but stil different a lot of the time: Napoles (Napoli) being a good example. As someone who lived in Napoli for 4 years it's been a hoot to see the differnt names around the world, and seeing how close or far they are from the original Greek "Neapolis"

    I came back to New Zealand on holiday from Italy in the early 80's and, in a moment of pure insanity, decided to invite a friend to dinner and make Pesto. What a day from hell, must have driven about 100kms in search of ingredients. Couldn't find basil, or pine nuts or even, WAIT FOR IT, olive oil. Went to every food shop (and eventually thanks to someone's genius suggestion), garden shop in my city. Eventually bought 20 ish basil seedlings and used those. Had to buy olive oil from a pharmacy (and a pharmacist who thought l was insane) and settled for almonds which l ground by hand. Luckily pasta was available and l had bought parmesan with me. Thank God! Put in an unbelievable amount of effort for a relatively simple dish. When my Kiwi friend arrived, took one look at the meal looked horrified and exclaimed " WHAT? GREEN SPAGHETTI!
