  • Please stop mocking Italians, that's not cool! Yes, we gesticulate (a lot), are very expressive, and overly emotional (read: loud). In the episode I uncover some of the negative Italian stereotypes..and no, the Godfather is not based on a true story...or is it?

    In this new mini-series, Marco sarcastically unveils what it means to be an "Italian abroad" ("Italiano all'estero") living in America, and reveals a few survival tips for all the 'Mama's boys' out there. Of course with a pinch of Italian sass and attitude ;) Enjoy!

    I studied abroad in Florence a few years back and brought a bunch of my friends back for a tour of Italy last October. One of my friends did the Italian accent and hand gesture mocking THE. WHOLE. TRIP. Everyone would stare at her and I just wanted to die :(( Safe to say I will NEVER travel with her again.

    OMG I think I met the same Uber guy when I went to San Francisco! As soon as he understood me and my boyfriend were Italians, he started asking us all those weird questions about "Il Padrino" (he genuinely though it was a good portrait of Italy!) and he made some jokes and we couldn't really say anything... we were too shocked! What a memory, tho! xD

    I am second generation Italian American from New York. Imagine that!
    I would never insult nor disrespect Italians by saying I’m Italian.
    I am Italian American. That is an entity all its own.
    We do share a lot of traits (Catholicism, love of food and family, food and family together, hands all over the place!
    Fiercely loyal and dedicated to family.
    I cherish my Italian heritage. And I love that you appreciate us.

      Also, my Napoli born grandparents had a wood burning pizza oven in their backyard to feed their 15 children.
      No pineapple! Never!!!!!!! Ewww!
      And never cheese on fish.
      Question: What do Italians and/ or Italian Americans think if they had to identify their race? Latin? White? Olive skinned?
      Just curious.

    Marco, my family is originally from the Lipari Islands and I found a lot of peoples view on Italian culture is based on more Sicilian culture than the culture of the rest of Italy. I’ve been to Italy and found it to be just another country not that far different from home but growing up in the culture I wouldn’t find any difference anyways 😂

    Americans don’t find those things racist because our Italian immigrants from about mid 20th century to now we consider Italians just “white” therefore not really below a social chain of race in this country and some groups believe that no one can be racist toward white people. Even though Italian immigrants were treated terribly during most of the 19th and 20th century along with the Irish immigrants that we now also consider just “white”.

    Hello Marco 😎😊 I think part of the reason Americans tend to associate Italian-ness with overemotional/loud/overromantic traits is that a lot of immigrants to the US from Italy at the beginning of the 20th century were coming from Naples, Campania in general, and other parts of southern Italy in general... ;)

    • @8543960
      @8543960 Před 4 lety +2

    • @ZakhadWOW
      @ZakhadWOW Před 9 měsíci

      @@8543960 Campania is probably THE most exuberant part of the modern Italian state, which is in reality a Frankenstein's monster of smaller northern regions fused with the huge Kingdom of Naples bysewing them together with the Papal States in the middle. Germany was relatively cohesive in culture, just fragamented according to who owned what chunk of land. Italy had literally ANCIENT divisions to overcome, as well as a geogaphy unlike anything else in world... I think looking at Japan, they might be the closest with a long central portion that is relatively narrow and then spreads out a bit at southern regions. But that exuberance sort of deflects from the reality that Campanian in general, and Neapolitans in specific tend to be truly concerned about their fellow man.. All over northern Italy [FLorence northward] I saw much less concern for the plight of the homeless, poor, etc.
      These may sound like stereotypes, but remember, at the heart of every stereotype, their is a core nugget of truth.

    I was in Frankfurt for 2019 new year Eve and at midnight, went out on the street to shoot some fireworks, yes Germans like that too. I was introduced to a neighbour, had a small conversation that I ended as gently as I could when the guy that I knew for few minutes, asked me if I brought a guitar and could sign some Italian song. I was about to be sarcastic and answer that “ sorry no I didn’t bring the mandolin “ but I decided he was a bit tipsy and it wasn’t worth the hassle. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    It is expressiveness, a sense of engagement with the world: and nothing to be mocked or ashamed of. The Italian language and the psychology underpinning it are simply so rhythmically alive and flowing that one simply _has_ to conduct the music it brings to life!
    A native English speaker who's also spoken French since 11, German and Spanish since 16, et al., for me, Italian, Italy and Italians remain so seductive. And people ask why a good third of my "favorites" playlist on Spotify is Italian singers: _Ho visto un posto, che mi piace: si chiama mondo [italiano]..._ (even after riding the subway and buses in _Nabuli_ )

      White in America is applied to anyone from Europe but you're right that even Europe can be quite mixed. I know for Sicilians (and other southern Italians) things can get very confusing what with all of the cultural diversity that's happened over the centuries. It's not quite fair to lump all Italians together under the label "white".

      @inevitaly  Před 4 lety +4

      Hi Juan, I agree with you that I may have use the term loosely or inappropriately. However, you have no idea of how many times I've heard Italians being called mafiosi, lazy, unreliable, mama boys and being made fun for the way we talk, move, work, etc. Plus, American history shows how badly the Italians and the Irish (both white and among many other groups) were treated when they first arrived here. If singling out a national group and making them feel inferior is not racist, then we may disagree on the word, but the concept remains. Probably I should have said 'xenophobic'.
      In any case, I apologize if I made you uncomfortable - the video is clearly no meant to be serious.
      PS: I'm *not* straight and trust me when I say I know what it feels like to be discriminated against (plus I come from a country where my marriage is not even fully recognized).
