[Ep.4] BEING FAR FROM HOME ● Italians' Struggles in America | Inevitaly

  • But truly...the number one struggle for an Italian expat is the distance from home. From our family and friends, our native language, the lifestyle and the culture. We're a quirky and odd nation, we're self-deprecating and make fun of Italy all the time. But our attachment to the motherland is authentic and visceral. Just like our unconditional love for mamma ♡

In this new mini-series, Marco sarcastically unveils what it means to be an "Italian abroad" ("Italiano all'estero") living in America, and reveals a few survival tips for all the 'Mama's boys' out there. Of course with a pinch of Italian sass and attitude ;) Enjoy!

My other half is Italian and we live together in London.. being so close to Italy we still have pretty good access to Italian products as I’m sure you remember Marco. Having been together for almost six years, access to Italian food is now essential for both of us.. I guess you don’t choose the Italian lifestyle, it definitely chooses you 😂

Aw you're a good person Marco. I came across your channel because I was getting ready to go on a vacation trip to Italy which unfortunately got kiboshed due to the coronavirus scare. I just got to say that I really appreciate your insight because it got me extremely excited to go to Italy.I also felt much more prepared because I had some awareness as to how to interact with Italians. And yes...I'm going...just not right away. Welcome to America babe, I'm glad you're having a good time here. Best wishes! 😁🏳️‍🌈🇺🇸🇮🇹

My son is struggling as an American ex-pat because of coronavirus. He is in Sulzano and it’s just south of Brescia. They have closed all the schools and it is dangerous now to take the trains. It’s sad. He told me that there are many new cases today in Brescia, cases that haven’t even been reported to the WHO. I sent him your video because it’s very positive good energy. Thank you.

Ciao Marco. I know this feeling. I lived in Canada for several years. I really enjoyed my life there (I even got the citizenship). I tried to go back to Europe at least once à year to visit my family and friends. It was great to see them but it was always too short and I realized they kept living their lives without me (great events, babies...). One day in Montreal, I met a very special (and cute) guy from France (with roots in Genova and Ischia). He came back to Europe. I missed him so much, I followed him. No regret. Living very far from Europe made me feel more European (and French) than ever before. I love Italy, by the way, and not only Florence, Rome and Venice.
    Stay safe these days.

My partner is Italian. To learn Italian and to better understand the culture I took a project in Milan. I noticed that my Italian colleagues were very intelligent, open, warm, supportive and self-managing. On the other hand, italian managers were too distant, not open for suggestions, and problem avoidant. In general Italians are better talkers than listeners and they have less self-reflection. As a result projects improve slower and their economy growers slower than in Northern Europe. I still love Italians and Italy but I will never take a project in Italy again.

Hi Marco! I'm so glad to see you posting videos again! I made the opposite life change; I'm an American, but now living in Italy - in the south, in Lecce. I can definitely tell you that I haven't had the same struggles with food as you have - if anything I've been learning so many new vegetables that I love and how to cook them. My struggles have been confined to two words: public administration. Everything else is lovely! I hope you have a lovely experience in the US!

    Ciao Marco
Im Brazilian And I lived in Rome for 6 months, 3 years Ago, during Erasmus exchange program...i think my biggest difficilt was understanding the cultural diferences specially related to behavior, what I could do and what would not be seen as normal or polite. My second difficult was to show people that Brazil is not only about soccer and carnival hahaha I see that stereotype is something you also struggle with. At least, with so much issues involving illegal immigration in Italy, I used to have the feeling that sometimes people looked at me as I was some illegal immigrant willing to take their jobs hahaha but that was not a big thing. At the end I loved my period there, and hope to be back soon!

Buon proseguimento.

I'm an italian who is an abroad resident! I go to school in London! But next year I am going to the US for University. I was raised in Rome my whole life so it was definetely a lot of culture shock moving to London. However, I think London is better at Italian restaurants then the US. There are a lot of authentic italian restaurants and supermarkets usually have everything I need (except parmiggiano) The people working in the restaurants are also Italian and the best thing about London is that I live in an area with a lot of immigrants/foreigners and it's the best feeling when I am in the supermarket and I hear someone speaking Italian on the phone! Is California similar to this? Because on the west coast there are not as many italians living there so I am scared that I will feel disconnected once I am there.

I realize right now travel is not a super safe thing to do, but when you are able to explore a little more of the U.S., I suggest New Orleans, LA. Since it has historically been a major port city, it has a heavy multicultural influence. In particular there is a large population of people of Italian descent here ( primarily Sicilian). But because of that, there are a variety of very good and authentic Italian restaurants run by Italians. There is also access to fantastic Italian products as well. New Orleans is often described as the U.S. city with the heaviest European influence.

I quite enjoyed your video series about Italians.
We expats always have to deal with stereotypes. The good news is that we’re always open to new ideas and we’re not afraid to explore new ideas, places and experiences . Which by the way, enriches our lives immensely 😏 don’t you think?😀
I love to learn about any culture. And Italian is not the exception. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about it.
Question : Can you upload a series about authentic Italian cooking here in America? And how or where to find authentic Italian products and such?
I wouldn’t mind a Sicilian recipe here and there. 😜🙏🤗🤗
    Please upload more videos!😃
My thoughts and prayers for the beautiful people in Italy in these moments.😕

Marco, I have read the comments on these latest videos, and I am glad to see that most of them are positive. For us Americans who have been made to feel at home in other countries as much as our own, we know what it feels like to both love the place we live in and the people we come to know, but also miss certain aspects and people of our home as well. So please ignore those who say that maybe you should go back home if you miss Italy so much. È mancanza di educazione.

As a German visiting Sicily (Palermo) I struggled mostly with the public transportation system and how unreliable it is, the very different understanding of personal space and the seemingly non-existance of traffic rules. To this day it amazes me, how traffic even works the way it's done in Palermo. 😂 Nevertheless I fell in love with the place and culture. Not to mention the food. ;)

If you are looking for the best selection of Italian food and goods in North America, you have to come to Toronto, Canada. Toronto has one of the top five largest Italian populations outside Italy, and the only North American city that can challenge Toronto with Italian goods is NYC, and even that is debatable. My family immigrated from Italy to Toronto, and we send Italian goods to our relatives in the USA, as they just can't get the items in the USA, even in heavily Italian cities like Philadelphia.
Here in Toronto, we have two Little Italy's in the city, and a suburb full of stores where you can get fresh made cheese and food, a local Italian radio and TV station with local news in Italian and Italian shows broadcast from Italy, many of the Italian communities here have annual festivals like the ones back in their hometowns in Italy, and due to there being many children of Italian decent, some public schools have mandatory Italian lessons in heavily Italian areas of Toronto.
One of my favourite activities to do with my father when he was alive, was to go to the Italian districts on a Saturday morning and get fresh mozzarella and other cheeses.
If you want a taste of Italy in North America, come visit Toronto. There are 500,000 Italians here that will make you feel like you are back in Italy in spots :).

It’s unrelated to this video but it’s something I’m DYING to confirm . . .
There is an Italian musician/artist named Matteo Ceccarini who does much of ‘la musica para la sfilata’ (my words 😉) for Giorgio Armani.
    Is his last name pronounced
Che (like Chex but no x) cha rini
    -or-

I am 1/2 German/1/2 Ukrainian with a heavy New Jersey accent. I am going on a Costa Cruise to Savona Italy. My greatest concern is that CORONA VIRUS THING. The 2nd is not being able to communicate.

Marco, I hope your family is safe. This is such a tough time for Italy (and for the world). I have lots of family still in Italy. My heart breaks for what they’re going through. Bless you. Love your videos ♥️🙌🏼🇮🇹

I love watching your videos. I'm a huge fan. I am from the south and I know if I went to Italy I would miss BBQ. I love ribs and pulled pork. Do they have American food in Italy? 🍔😁

Half way between San Francisco and Los Angeles c'é una citta si chiama San Luis Obispo. Just south of San Luis Obispo and before Pismo Beach there is an Italian speciality store called DePalo & sons just off the 101 fwy at Shell Beach - una cittadina piccolississima. And there the babbo makes fresh mozzarella daily. Next time you're driving one way or the other - DePalo & sons 2665 Shell Beach Rd, Shell Beach, CA 93449-1779

I've always enjoyed watching your videos, but I find your comments on locating genuine Italian foods in the U.S. a bit disappointing. You can walk into almost any major grocery store in any major city and find imported cheeses from Italy, France, Germany, etc. I find imported mozzarella, burrata, caciocavallo, mascarpone and ricotta very easily. Some at my local grocery store, some at my local Italian delicatessen. Granted there are some very poor local imitations, but if you're in San Francisco finding imported cheeses from Italy should not be a problem.
