  • With Lucas Paqueta's time at West Ham potentially coming to an end in the summer transfer window with the interest of Manchester City, Charlie sat down with Jack Elderton, West Ham tactics writer, co-founder of Analytics United and Hammers Chat patreon host to discuss just how vital the Brazilian is for the Hammers.
    Who should replace Paqueta at West Ham? Jack discusses some potential options, including German wonderkid Florian Wirtz and the recently reported target Morgan Gibbs-White, how ambitious could we go and what attributes each future midfielder would need to succeed!
    Charlie and Jack have a weekly podcast on the Hammers Chat patreon called Hammerlytics, where they break down matches tactically and analytically, answering your questions ass they go.

    Without doubt one of the best talents I’ve seen over there since I started going in 1986. Can do absolutely everything and as Declan Rice said “It’s obviously taken him a while to settle into the Premier League and into the training ground, moving his family over. I think now you’re seeing the real Lucas. Some of the stuff he does, even in training, it’s just mind-boggling how good he is’’. Will be a very gutting day when he moves on.

    Paqueta hasn't actually played that well of late, but Bowen, Kudus and Antonio have stepped up. We couldn't replace everything Rice does with one player, so we got Alvarez who can do a lot of what Rice does, and then got Soucek, JWP and Paqueta to replace the rest. Paqueta is pretty unique, but if we get the right replacement (maybe a Grealish or a Zielinski) we can cope. We need to keep both Kudus and Bowen for that transition season at least, however.

    Paquetta plays brilliant in midfield for brazil. Moyes puts him left wing. Go figure. One of the best number 10s and moyes puts him out on the wing because he don't know how to use him. I want a new manager that plays players in their correct position. This manager is a utter menace who eventually ruins players. All for a tin pot trophy called the conference league which we were favorites to win.

      Paqueta himself said his favourite position is left midfield, and he usually played 8 for Brazil alongside Casemiro, not 10. He's been publicly very grateful to Moyes for giving him the freedom to play where he wants. And stop denigrating West Ham's achievements like the Spud ringer you are.

    Paqueta is a good player but i’d not be panicking if he goes for £85m. He’s a does some great/flashy stuff but does give the ball away & is far from irreplaceable.
    Lets face it, we could replace him with a couple of £20-50m players like with Rice & have Gibbs-White or Cherki as an attacking midfield & Thuram or Fofana as the driving/progressive midfielder.

    GW is a marquee signing that shows we are intending to build after the sale. We are not going to be able to get a like-for-like signing to replace Paqueta, so I'd rather that we buy young, talented and british. i.e. Show some long-term planning for once. We will have the money to overpay and our transfer policy normally sucks and incurs major losses. Safe expensive bets or Steiden punts please.

    I think the answer (If Paqueta leaves) is using the money to transition to a really effective and conventional 4-2-3-1 with inverted wingers. Use the money to buy a top drawer CF and an inverted left winger, play Kudus as the 10 and Bowen RW. Aguerd will probably be leaving so i think it will have to be a like for like, signing a naturally left footed CB (Kilman for example). I'd also like a naturally left footed CMFer to play alongside Alvarez next season and that way we would have a completely balanced side, similar to Arsenal last season (Andy Diouf from Lens looks great). Then it's a question of full backs; we need a back up left back and people would argue an improvement on Coufal. I think that is feasible if Paqueta leaves. We have money in the bank (evident in January) have money from Fornals and money coming in from the likes of Kehrer, Benhrama and any outgoings in the summer. Add that to PL money, TV money and European money and we should be in a healthy position for the summer window. It's also the beginning of an FFP cycle as well, so it leaves plenty of windows to 'balance the books' without the fear of being penalised.

    • @damiandamico4715
      @damiandamico4715 Před měsícem +1

      I don't think we should be looking for a like for like. I think Paqueta is quite a bespoke player. His attributes are that of a left sided 8. I think he'd be amazing in a side who keep the ball as well as City in midfield with De Brunye and Rodri. I think if he moves to City you will see him effect the entirety of games as opposed to having moments as he has for us.

  • @ClaretandBooze
    @ClaretandBooze Před měsícem +5

    The vast majority of moments from Paq that lead to chance creation are from central areas and Moyes always makes the tactical shift to move him central when we are in the shit.
    Lets face it
    Paq is stored out on the left so that we can pack the midfield with defensive minded players.
    Any other manager plays Paq in the middle. Including his new National team manager who played him centrally alongside Bruno, keeping Douglas Luiz out of the team.
    Paq would affect the game positively from RB, nothing to do with the genius of playing him out of position on the LW
    You think Pep will play Paqueta on the wing?
    Not a chance, he’ll be partnering Rodri in the middle of the park!
    But playing him central for us is moronic apparently 😂

    • @damiandamico4715
      @damiandamico4715 Před měsícem +1

      He done that to protect JWP's place in the side to show the board that his one and only signing in the summer window was worthwhile, but when push come to shove, JWP was dropped. I was saying this from day one of the season. I'd be looking for a buyer for JWP in the summer to fund a better quality partner for Alvarez in the summer.

    Impossible? No. Difficult, yes.
    It depends also on how we want to balance the team. We may not necessarily replace Paqueta with like-for-like player. Maybe the focus will be on more of a direct winger Moyes has been chasing just about every summer (e.g. Kostic, Barnes, Lingard, etc.).

      No, not necessarily that. My ideal profile for a left winger would be an inverted winger who like you said is very pacey and direct. I'd like someone who offers what Kudus and Bowen have offered us from the opposite flank. So a right footer player from the left. Kostic is naturally left footed so wouldn't offer that, Lingard I see more as a 10 and Barnes, I like his profile but has barely played since joining Newcastle. I really liked the links to Ibrahm Osman, I would consider Bergwein if he is showing he has the same levels of work rate as the likes of Bowen.@@MarkChippers2193
