Brilliant! Solved my puzzling over the problem. Very clear explanation from a clearly very experienced plumber. Thank you sir.
You are welcome!
@@dereton33 If I'm not sure which mixing tap is causing the problem, could I fit a non-return valve on the cold feed pipe outside the tank in the attic?
Thanks so much, the video was perfect timing I have just been watching your video from 10 years ago on how to replace a Float Valve in the cold water tank, thank you for your video's helped me out so many times. Love your CZcams channel.
You're welcome!
Cor we were absolutely panicking
Overflow was pumping out the side of the house
I was just walking out the door
& the mrs was shouting “come back !!! “
It’s was the new mixer in the kitchen
I stupidly used the tap & left it in the middle of the hot & cold!after use .
We just put the hot water on for 3-4 mins & that stopped it after about 30 seconds.
Thank you very much sir 👍
No problem.
Great tip Al.
Thanks 👍
Al enjoy your videos very informative, can I just say it can be a situation where the water in the cylinder gets too hot.One way to solve this was to turn the pump down on an open system the other is if you have a gate valve on the flow to the cylinder so the heat diverts to the heating. Also could I just say that you should have a ball valve before the non return valve so if there is an airlock on the hot water you can shut the water off take out the non return and replace it temporarily with a small piece of pipe blow it out withe the main at the mixer tap by blocking the spout when it’s back running shut the ball valve off replace the pipe with the non return valve then open the ball valve.
Cheers, very helpful. Explains why it thumps out of the overflow when I leave the sink tap running too long when I'm cleaning my paintbrushes!
You're welcome!
thank you for the info never knew that mixer tap needed a return valve many thanks yet again.
No problem 👍
found this video very informative and useful.
Thanks Ratch.
another problem of an overflowing cistern could also be a rare pinhole or corroded cylinder coil.
Thanks comrade.
Very helpful - thank you!
You're welcome!
Hi, thanks for the informative post 👍🏻…have an overflow issue in heating roof tank… the ball valve is underwater but seals the flow easily…it does suggest a back flow coming up more than the ball valve failing… would this issue happen if we’ve a bath/shower tap mixer and the taps are left on but in shower position (the shower rose is a push button faucet?
You may have mains back filling up the cold feed. Fit a non return valve.
great explanation cheers
No problem 👍
hi there, thanks for very informative video . i replace my Ballcock. but it still drips at nights only
i do have 2 mixer taps in bath room + shower. i also have the kitchen sink mixer tape . do i need to put none return valve on all hot water feed .where the mixer are? please advice.
Yes, but before doing that it but it might be a good idea to check it is not the F and E tank that is overflowing, as that means your hot water cylinder has holed through the inner coil.
Thank you so much. I have constant execcive dripping to the outside. I have replaced the old taps with mixer taps, so I thought maybe it is my problem but I get the dripping all the time. Regardless of the taps being open or not. Could that still be the problem?
Thank you very much
Try fitting a non return valve on the hot feed to the mixer tap. Do take a look in the loft and make sure it is not the F and E tank that is overflowing as that means you will need to change the cylinder.
Thank you for your quick reply . it is the big Black tank in the Attic.after watching your Video i changed the Ballcock Valve . but it still over flow at nights. is there a video by yourself to check the hole in hot water cylinder inner coil? ( this is copper cylinder in the shower room) your help is greatly appreciated. thanks
I have no video on that, but, It will be the small F and E tank that will be overflowing not the Main large tank. It should be located next to it.
Thanks @dereton33, great video yet again. :-) Do the one way valves reduce the pressure on the hot supply (as far as the tap is concerned)? I looked up 1-way valves and there seemed to be single-check and double-check types. The double check seemed to reduce the pressure more.
Could you get away with putting just a single valve just above the output of the water tank which would cover all mixer hot taps? Maybe the reason that one would not NOT do this IS because they reduce the pressure; i.e. only put them where needed (on mixer taps).
A single check one reduces pressure the least. A valve on the cold tank outlet would force the water up the vent instead.
I have this problem. Shall I just add a single to the mixer hot tap? Also need to replace my stop cock as well so I'll use your video for that as well 👍
Hi Dereton, thanks again. this is the system i have. in basement Free standing Boiler , pump out side and a expansion tank.2nd floor in the bathroom, a copper hot water tank, in the loft a large black cold water tank. there is only 1 tank in the loft nothing els. in the middle of night or in the some evening water rise in the black cold water tank in the lost and stark over flowing.i had chang the ballcock valve in the tank. but it still overflowing. i am planing to put one way valve on hot feed to all mixer tapes.but i am not sure how to find out if i have a hole in coil ( i believe it would be in hotter tank coil ?) any advice will be welcome you inspire me to do it my self or would you advice me to call someone.i live in west yorkshire Halifax. Thanks in advance
If the copper cylinder in the loft is higher than your black water tank, then it is pointing towards the cylinder inner coil. I would certainly get some one in to look at it for you.
Love your vids. Could a toilet cistern cause the issue too?
An overflow yes if you still have the old overflow pipe connected.
Very greatful for your page. I have an overflow pipe leaking, I live in a block of flats. Both my toilets are leaking and running into my pan. Could this still be the reason for overflow pipe leaking?
No .
@@dereton33 Thankyou for your reply.
Do you only need the non return valves on the hot pipes on a gravity feed system not on a combi pressurised system ?🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Yes. no need on combi systems.
Amazing man 👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much 😀
So I have an overflowing header tank, the cold feed tank isn’t getting up to the overflow so it’s something else. Your explanation makes sense but!!! I haven’t got new taps. We have 2 showers but with mixers and the kitchen sink has a mixer and our en suite has a mixer. Is it possible that one of the mixers isn’t shutting off properly?
Yes and also they may not have non return valves fitted.
@@dereton33 so, I have been keeping an eye on the level, and it is rising. I water coming from the big cold feet tank and I put a clear plastic cup with the half bottom cut out from the pipe that over hangs the small tank and that was dry. So I think it must be coming from the hole at the bottom of the tank. So what does that mean??
Well explained
Thanks so much
Glad it was helpful!
Hi there. I have a boiler in the kitchen and a cold tank in the loft that only goes to cold water mixer tap in bathroom and sink. The cold pressure is low and when i use the mixer tap i only get really hot water because the pressure of the cold is so low to change the temperature at all. If i have the cold and hot open on mixertap for a long time will the hot push through and up in to the cold water tank in the loft causing overflow???? Thank you. Your videos are life savers
No it will be fine.
@@dereton33 I'll have to get up in the loft again then and see what caused it. Thanks for the reply 👍
My problem doesn't seem to be covered. I have 2 tanks, large one to fill the cylinder and a small one for the hotwater/heating boiler..... small tank over flowing after a couple of days after jugging out water to reduce the level, even with the supply to the ball cock isolated....... it is a fully pumped system and a gas boiler (not combi obviously)...... so how is the small boiler/heating header tank getting water to over flow?
The inner coil of your hot water cylinder is holed.
Recently fitted new radiator, with some minor issues but works fine now. Since doing that, when I put heating on, the overflow pipe from loft drips. It was fine before so must be related. Any help??? Thanks
Air in system or some sludge has moved around.
Does this mean you could be getting washed in central heating water meant for radiators?
In a word YES.
I'm having same problem with a combination direct cylinder could you make a video on it please
A direct cylinder cannot make the tank overflow.
What it it when there a continuous stream of water coming out of the roof over flow and there n its just continuous n no taps have been turned on.. it like the roof over flow it connected to the mains from the road
The ball valve in the tank is gone.
@dereton33 can that be fix or do u have to replace thr tank
Hi mate, could this also happen from a faulty cylinder stat as I don’t have the immersion turnt on? Just thought I’d ask however will definitely be fitting NRVs
Yes it is possible, but it would only happen while the hot water was switched on, not when it was off.
Hi Al, does it matter which way round the valve goes?
There's a directional arrow denominating direction of flow. If in doubt, blow either end. Air will go through one way only too.
Thanks Loafer.
Thank you so much for explanation I'm much happier about the overflow now and that it's going to be easily sorted
Great to hear!
I've got water flowing into the overflow pipe from the loft storage tank. It happens when I turn on the central heating. I had a recent chemical flush done of the radiators. Can this be sorted easily? The plumber thinks it could some sort of blockage from the flush.
@@sparephone8228 hi what did you do to remedy this in the end ?
@@lillydear2559 Hi what happened was that when the plumber allowed the cold water storage tank to drain through the radiators , all the junk and sediment got blocked in part of the piping near the hot water tank. So he had to cut that part of the pipe, clear the blockage and re weld in place again. I was initially told by the plumber company they would a pressure gun to clear the radiators after the chemical treatment. Central heating is workin fine now, definately more heat from the radiators.
Wont the cold push down the hot pipe to the valve and therefore not let hw through the non return as the cold water the other side of it is at a greater pressure
That`s right but it will stop the tank overflow. Only happens with poor quality taps. Also only when mixing hot and cold together.
I have that same problem but it's with smaller tank i think it's the heating tank for radiators keeps filling up and oveflows ouside, put a new ballcock on it but after a few hours still fill up and overflows even with the ballcock completely shut off any idea why . Thanks
It is a pinhole in the inner coil of the hot water tank. Only way of fixing it is to renew the tank.
@dereton33 Thanks we were thinking of changing hot water tank anyway . Our shower pump keeps going on and off our plumper thinks it the hot water tank needs to be changed.
Would changing my shower mixer cartridge fix this issue?
If it is a faulty one yes.
@@dereton33 cheers great videos l!!
Wud I be right in saying If the coil was burst in the cylinder it cud also do this
Yes but the overflow would come from the F and E tank not the main roof tank.
no.copper cylinder is on 2nd floor and black cold water tank is on 3rd floor/in the loft or attic
O I see. I would still get someone in to look at it for you.
Best thing since sliced bread 🍞
Now that`s using your loaf, ha ha.
What's the most common cause, just explain it only please? How to solve it if it is due to the most common problem?
Inner coil of the hot water cylinder holed.
Hero 🎉🎉😊
No problem.
Some fixed spout (not swivel) mixers, particularly bath deck mixers are dual flow. The water mixes in the spout and not the body of the tap. These wont backfill the hot up through the cylinder and tank and end up pouring out of the warning pipe. They are like rocking horse poo; very rare and it's difficult to establish if you have these beforehand, especially if you purchase them online, or from a diy shed. Let's face it, the staff wont know the difference, nor care for that matter. Caveat emptor! Let the buyer beware! Somewhat begs the question. If you have mains water at high pressure and hot water at gravity (low pressure), what's the point of buying and fitting any mixer?
Very true Loafer, thanks for the heads up.
