  • So, first port of call is the check the ballcock, but what if that is ok.

    Great explanation. Would the F and E tank not benefit from non-return valve ?

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  Před rokem +1

      No it would have enough pressure pushing back up to prevent it filling.

    Thanks for this explanation. I have this problem. Changed the ball valve in the f and e tank and still the same. I’m guessing I could 100% prove it’s the coil by lowering the level in the main tank so it’s below the level in the f and e tank. The pressure should be to low to pass water into the f and e tank via the coil then? Cheers for your help

    I had an overflow on the main tank last week. When I went up into the loft the next day, everything was fine, water level normal no running fill valve. Maybe it filled via the vent but I didnt notice anything.

  • @NodrogMacphee
    @NodrogMacphee Před rokem

    What does the overflow pipe/vent from the immersion tank do ? Ive recently changed the tank (old zinc one) and wondered why we have an overflow (its never been in operation for over 40 years).

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  Před rokem

      It allows for expansion into the roof tank if the water gets to hot.

    Hi al ,
    When you say , pin hole in cylinder..do you mean the Immersion Tank needs replacing..? 😮

  • @AH-xf7qf
    @AH-xf7qf Před 7 měsíci

    Hi. Is cross contamination almost a certainty if the issue is a result of a faulty coil? I currently have this issue and hoping to have it fixed tomorrow by replacing the ball valve.
    Another question - would the hit water show some discolouring if there indeed is cross contaminating in the cylinder? Cheers!

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  Před 7 měsíci

      Cross contamination is a certainly possible. Renewing the tank valve will not stop it. The cylinder will need replacing.

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  Před 7 měsíci

      Also depends how bad the contamination is to the amount of discoloured water from the taps

    • @AH-xf7qf
      @AH-xf7qf Před 7 měsíci

      Many thanks for your response.
      We haven't seen any discolouration when running the hotwater. Just hoping replacing the ball valve will stop the overflow in the F&E. If it doesn't then looks like it will have to be a new cylinder job.
      Oddly the overflow started the same night our mains in the area wasn't working and after Severn Trent came out 5 hours later to have it fixed.
      Oddly the dishwasher also stopped draining the same night!?
      Surely not a coincidence! :(

    I have very hard water, I think, and my mains water is fine and clear, however in my shower after a while I get an orange residue build up. I end up washing it off with a white vinegar spray. Is this also a sign of cross contamination?

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  Před měsícem

      No. Limescale builds up in the shower head and causes this. Al

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  Před rokem +1

      You more than likely need a new cylinder

    • @petehiggins33
      @petehiggins33 Před rokem +1

      While the overflow is running turn off your stop cock, make sure its fully off and isn't allowing any water flow. Wait for ten minutes. If the overflow stops then you need to renew the washer in the ball cock in the F&E tank. If the overflow continues then you *probably* have a pin-hole in your heater coil. Turn on a hot tap until the water in the hot water header tank falls below the level of the overflow in your F&E tank. If the overflow from the F&E tank stops then you *definitely* have a pin hole in your heater coil.

    Shame it's not possible to get inside the tank to solder up the hole. Some genius at NASA should have worked out how to fix it via the immersion unit hole by now.
    My F&E tank has a thick layer of orange scum you could walk on. Wonder where that came from!?
