- In this video we are going to cover How an indirect hot water tank works, This is a very simple setup which you will find in most UK homes.

Hi there, I got a question for you please, my mate has converted a two bed flat into two separated one bed flats, he wants to get a sinflo or mastering toilet for the flat he added up already and he wants to know if he can connect the kitchen waste into the saniflo waste?
I have air trapped in the coil inside the tank. How do I take it out or just wait for a few days

Hi , we’ve just had a new tank fitted just like the one in your informative video. Every time the pump starts up there is a loud vibration noise running through the pipe work in the house. Do you think it’s possible that the Coil inside the tank is defective & could be creating the vibration?
Hi there, this is going to be a tough one but from my experience the coil could have been split when installed but you will notice that the header tank in the loft will continue to over flow so check that if not then the next thing it could be (going off a new installation) is the pipework might not be clipped so when the pump comes on it almost gives a similar noise to 'water hammer' with the pipes vibrating from the pump circulating.

Hello Dan, I bought my house 20 yrs ago, there was no central heating, the house had this electric system, but then I installed the latest combination boiler. I still have this. Can I reuse this to boil the water to save electricity and gas bills? Instead of using a new combination boiler?

hi buddy i have 2 boilers and 3 tanks similar... its a hotel i am running. the problem now is the water coming from the showers is not consistently hot / mixed. the temperature fluctuates highly from hot to cold. the water temperature in the shower is not stable. what could be the problem and where could it be ...... in the tanks or the boilers..??? we recently had the gas renewal certifications where the people did the boilers and told is working fine. please share yr expertise and experiences. thanks.
Hi mate, to be honest it could be as simple as the mixing valves are failing/been adjusted incorrectly. Make sure you check the valves and their integrity. Another tell tale sign is that the shower head will constantly drip. another issue could be not enough water getting to the valve, so check the supplies hot from the tank and also the cold mains to make sure the stop taps haven't been turned down or adjusted. If it's not these then a deeper inspection will be needed I'm afraid 👍🏻.
Hi.what is the electric switch on the wall for and if you turn it on to heat up the water do you need to turn it off or it automatically switches itself off?Thanks
Standard and you need the.turn off after about an hour or two
Hi Dan, thanks for the video, I found it very informative! I’m new to the cylinder heating system, so sorry for a dumb question - why does the water main needs to go all the way to the loft through the tank there and only then to the cylinder? Can it not go straight into the cylinder? Will the cylinder not hold the main pressure or is there another reason? Thank you in advance.
No it has to have a tank in the loft, with a new modern unvented cylinder you have a cold main that connects into a combination valve then into the cylinder without the need for tanks 👍🏻

Sorry I thought I answered it with a ‘No’, it’s designed for a low pressure system meaning gravity fed from a tank in the loft.
Hence the term low pressure. If you put a mains feed into it, it won’t end very well 😂 BOOM
@@DoItAllDan sorry for being persistent here :) I understand that it cannot be connected and the consequences and of course will not even attempt to, but being a curiosity driven tech guy I still did not fulfill my desire to know WHY, technically. Will the outer shell not hold the pressure or is it joints, pipes or what? I understand the water expands as it get how which an expansion tank could help with, but otherwise, what is the reason it will not work?
Hi! Can this explode by accident? I am viewing rooms to rent and one of the rooms has a water tank in the room. Is it dangerous to have such a water tank in a room? Is it noisy? Thanks a lot for your video.
Hi with this particular tank it is open vented (tank in the loft which spills over) so no pressure can build up in the system so it will not blow up however it can split and leak. it can be nosey when the water is being heated it will sound like it's boiling. Another type of cylinder is called unvented which is pressured and if installed incorrectly can blow up. Thanks

Hi dan i have had this old water tank for 21 years now . Im a little bit worried off how old it is . Ive just noticed its leaking a tiny bit from one off the pipes . Could you give me any advice on what to do . Im nervous that it could explode.
If it is leaking from a pipe or joint I would get a professional to come and take a look asap, it could be a simple fix or it could be something more serious. To save any accidents happening have it checked it may potentially need replacing if is that old and worn. 👍🏻

Hi i think i have a indirect cylinder tank, in my loft, with 2 water tanks above it. My question is, when i turn on my central heating should the boiler ignite? Because it doesn't. But when i turn on the separate switch for hot water, the boiler ignite up, is this supposed to happen? Or Do i have to have both hot water and heating on at the same time for the central heating to work? I never put the central heating on as the hot water heats the rads and the house.
It would be hard to tell without taking a look to be honest it depends on your system entirely, do you have a valve In your airing cupboard? It may have failed if so you shouldn't be getting hot rads when the hot water is on that's for sure. If not it could be a faulty diverter valve. I would recommend having it checked over by a professional.
@@DoItAllDani don't know. As the tank has so many pipes i wouldn't know what to look for.
I have a same tank. Why does it heats water in this tank when i turn my heating on? Also water gets cold very quickly from boiling hot.
Normally a valve is at fault, check your 3 port that maybe the issue 👍🏻
Can i turn the rotary valve off there (on the left valve is it?) so that i can heat my room radiators without also heating the main water tank at the same time? I don't use hot water much and don't need it sitting at 60c constantly.
Do not turn off your fill inlet valve, this will drain the tank when you use your tap. If there is controls in place to turn off your hot water (programmer) use that or you can turn the cylinder stat down to a lower temperature. 👍🏻
@@DoItAllDan I did turn that valve off but i worked out not to run the taps in that state. What about the electrical switch beside the tank, what does that do? Is there no way i can stop the tank from heating up? I literally turn a hot tap on once a week but have the radiators on for hours each day. Thanks for helping!
If the electrical lead goes to the cylinder it will be the immersion heater of you are unable to control it via a programmer then turn the immersion off and hopefully that will sort it 👍🏻
@@DoItAllDan With both valve and electrical switch off the tank still heats up so that's just the way mine is. I need some CH/DHW controls installed in the pipeline to do what i want it seems. Thanks for the help Dan.
Hi Dan can u please advise me I have tank I want to get rid it's a headache I have to wait for hot water after one person had bath. I want hot water on demand on top in summer I have to switch hot water on all the house gets hot
Depending on your demands it may be worth upgrading to an unvented cylinder or replacing with a combi boiler and removing the tanks completely
The pressure is really weak for my shower. How can I fix it myself? I have this same system
You would need a boost, would recommend a decent plumber to sort 👍🏻

I have an electric vented boiler, recently I noticed the water flows from the vent pipe nonstop even when the electric is turned off, please can you let me know if this is normal or do you have a link to find out what to do? Thank you
This is not normal, pumping over can be caused by numerous reasons you will need to have it looked at, could b a blockage get someone in to take a look 👍🏻

What about expansion?
Expansion would be located in another section of the system, I.e loft, boiler, utility. It depends where the engineer deems best in this situation 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 thank you

Hi, maybe someone reads my comment and helps me with answering a question - I have just moved into a new flat that has a water tank (probably indirect), I have never used it before. Lets say I literally need just a few litres of hot water to wash my hands and a few dishes. How do I do that?? I don't spend much time at home, I usually just come back from work in the evening and all I need is 2 minutes shower (or even not that because I take shower at the gym). Do I still need to heat that whole cylinder of water???? There is no way I need that much water daily, the tank looks like I could fill up two bathtubs. Maybe this works for a family of three or more, but I literally need very little hot water (maybe two buckets), usually in the evenings. Is it even possible? If someone could let me know that would be great.
Hi, unfortunately there isn’t much option to ‘limit’ how much water it heats it has to heat to the required temperature set by the stat.
If you have an immersion you could try turning it on for 45mins and see if that helps in any way.
Your other option is to rip it out and put a combi boiler in which does sound like your best route.
