  • Former President Barack Obama spoke at length about the war in Ukraine, telling an audience in Chicago that the conflict is a "bracing reminder for democracies that had gotten flabby and confused and feckless around the stakes of things that we tended to take for granted," including the United States. Obama also addressed his recollections of Vladimir Putin and how he isn't sure "that the person I knew is the same as the person who is now leading this charge." #CNN #News

And yes, the democracies did get flabby, they thought they could sit back, rest on their laurels and enjoy the fruits of work done by other generations of people without having to look after it themselves. And he is right. I am aware he did not get everything right as prsident, but show me the leader who always did get everything right, there are none. He is however a deeper thinker than most of the recent presidents and seems to have a longer view than most. His most accurate state, ent here is that there has been a kind of reversion back into the old ways of thinking politically and globally. He is right. Again. When this man answers a question, you can hear how he is working it out in his mind, drawing on evidence and experiences, and reaching his conclusions. Sometimes he struggles, but as a listener you may then agree or disagree based on his line of thought. For Trump, you hear emotions-if you blur all the words and leave only his rhythm and pitches, you can still know what his answer is. For Biden, you hear only prepared talking points, and you know exactly where he deviates from those points, which will be corrected by some civil servants a few hours later.

I loved it how he said something like "In 2014 (when Russia annected Crimea) we had to drag the Europeans kicking and screaming to acknowledge what was happening" . I live in Germany and travelled to the US in 2014, and my US relations were all much more worried about the Ukraine situation than I was. I hate to admit it, but we Germans were blind and stupid at the time regarding Russias action in Ukraine. Also I remember being very much focused on Syria and the ISIS situation in 2014, because we had a lot of Syrian refugees to take care of in our town. I guess most Humans can only handly a limited number of crises at a time, and Ukraine was too much for me.

The thing is though that the Americans always warn of things especially when they don’t bear the cost - Germany couldn’t just abandon Russian oil and tank it’s economy while the US would even benefit from that - but remember that the US did not send troops because that price and risk was too high for them
The US will always take the hawkish stance and in this case yes Europe was too self interested and weak but that doesn’t make the US right - in fact by 2014 many didn’t trust the US to support a EU stance and when trump came to power exactly that occurred, they didn’t trust the US after they spied on us in 2008 or lied to us in 2003… it’s not so simple then
