Tactically he's so lacking - wrong substitutions, timings and personel. He tries to not lose. He's shown the same pattern every time at the major tournaments. I honestly think had England put Rashford on at around 60-odd minutes then they would have won the game. Most of England's wide players like the ball to feet. Rashford does too even though he struggles at times but by far his best attribute is running in behind and he's better at it than anyone else in the England squad.
Why is that important? Because France's defenders were beginning to push up. There was some space opening up. Meanwhile, Harry Kane was doing what he likes to do, coming deep to be a playmaker but to be effective at that he needs runners. He has Son at Spurs and for England he has Rashford whose confidence was high and he was bang in form.
Furthermore, all the talk in France was that Rashford was England's biggest threat. There's a reason PSG want to sign him. The French rate him more than his own international manager does. The way the game was shaping up, bringing Rashford on at around 60 minutes for Henderson and moving Foden into the 10 was the way to go. France were there for the taking. But by the time Rashford did come on, it was the 85th minute, France already had their lead goal and didn't need to push high anymore, thus negating the effect that Rashford could have had if Southgate wasn't such a coward.
I'm not even English and Southgate frustrates the hell out of me.

The main problem is that Southgate has not been a proper manager and has not played many games as one..he does not know when the team is in ascendency and when they need to be pragmatic- he was brought in to get England competing in tournaments and not losing to the likes of iceland , repair the image of the team. When he took over in 2016 , the players were average..now these players are top but he still manages the same way and that's the gap..the players have evolved but he has not...

He stays invisible until fans get heated about CL, EPL & club football... they will no longer care or get heated after a while.

So you're spot on when you point out that Gareth has understood that next to actually winning something, having good relations with the media is the best protection and England manager can have. Solskjaer was a friend to players and reached finals and semi-finals, the narrative was a loser who was a bit of a soft touch, but these same traits are an asset for Southgate? Does not compute. I disagree I think there are plenty of winners this country has seen football player wise at one point the champions league semi finals was just English teams. Imagine if we actually gave the job to someone who has actually done something in football at the top level

    • @herbert9241
      @herbert9241 Před rokem

It's not us as a country, it's the FA, they're pulling in a different direction to grass roots supporters and players. As a former sporting competitor, I'd say there are more important things than winning. Crucially, never giving up - which is, if anything, conducive to winning.
Top priority for the FA is wearing a blazer and tie with distinction. Southgate is their dry dream in that respect but it doesn't affect our chances of winning anything. In fact it does - negatively: if they're frigid and uptight about candidates who have a bit of colour to their character.
Admittedly, they had their fingers burned with Big Sam - but that situation needn't have been terminal, it was clearly a journalist sting. Ditto with Venables and Hoddle - two English managers who made progress with the national team and ultimately got no back-up from the FA when they made front page news. Yet every milquetoast appointment is furnished with a new contract before their progress is tested in tournament. It wouldn't be unreasonable to leave the contract offer until after the tournament as an incentive for the tournament. Indeed, that would be normal.
I don't want oafs or drunks representing my country but that doesn't make this lot steely-eyed Spartan warriors. They're all about portraying themselves as prim and proper girl guides but they're not averse to a bit of cheating. They should forget about their showbiz profiles and just let their feet do the talking.

Example, Hal Robson Kanu (vs Belgium 2016 Euros) produced a moment that every Wales fan will remember forever, which was way beyond his perceived ability. This mentality supersedes any "coaching". Dean mentions Morocco and Croatia, those achievements are down to belief, not nit-picking about substitutions. Croatia and Morocco have no squad, they rely on their best players to perform and drive others on. Brazil had an amazing squad, but believed they'd turn up and just win. Gone! Southgate gave them everything to deliver, changed his style, and Kane fluffed his lines the pressure was at it's highest...

This is only my opinion but international sports are different. Players (and coaches) who may not be world beaters at club level, often fine this extra level when playing for their country. You see this all time time in international basketball tournaments where bench warmers on NBA teams play at a much higher level when playing for their country. This suggests to me that when performing for our country, you automatically find this little bit extra.
Having a non English manager, no matter how much he loves the team can't possibly to be expected to find that little bit extra level that he would find if he was coaching his native nation.
A foreign manager is great for nations ranked below 8th because they have more pressing needs on the tactical side, etc. where his skills would be needed

No they lost because the defence allowed Giroud to score the second French goal and because the attack didn't score themselves from open play. Too easy to blame Kane, the only England player who actually scored in the game and who had the guts to try for a second pen. It's a bit stupid to let Kane take two pens against his club captain who knows his game so well. Kane skied the ball because he had to improvise against Lloris. He tried to get the ball high in the top right of the net but it went wrong, which can happen to the best, not because he suddenly got the jitters. Why didn't one of the other players step up for the second pen, someone whom Lloris didn't know well? Thats down to Southgate.

England need the SGP to produce a proper system for future England teams to beat the very best teams. Copied France and SGP opened in 2012 so a matter time for it to come to fruition in terms of the coaches and also a way of playing.

I don’t understand this clamour to hire a Guardiola or even Tuchel stature manager. Spain have just appointed their U21 coach to replace Enrique, Low was not established when he took over Germany, Deschamps was from within the French setup and not a top club manager. The point is, even the top nations who produce great coaches rarely appoint them as these managers want to be at CL clubs.
Most nations just appoint someone from within their setup who has a natural ability to create a healthy environment and good man management skills.

To a squad with more depth male squad was filled with squad that arguably all could have started at different points. Plus with male game also there are more genuine contenders for all tournaments where as usa won most of women world cups and occasionally couple of others the depths of sides that could genuinely win are not as many in women game as the men.

Yeah, but the main critic was that how he would be as a manager how ruthless he would be, especially with the substitutions. Do you really think he justifies himself with the substitutions, especially at the times that you put those subs on the same situation happened against Croatia in the semifinals of the World Cup. The same situation happen again, Italy in the final of the European cup now the same thing is happening in the quarter-finals against France and it’s still doing the same thing and you still think that he should still go for the European Championships where when we play a big team again, he would do the same thing we need elite manager that’s what we need right now elite elite elite elite not standard

The FA should offer Southgate a promotion to an executive role. It's a way for them to give him a way out of the management role - which he's considering - and place him into a role where he can still do his best work off the pitch.
If he does choose to step down, for me the natural replacement at the moment is Gerrard. He's won honours as a manager at club level, albeit with Rangers, he's an icon to the current generation of players coming through, clearly has great leadership qualities and he has lived experience of the modern England environment.
I'm personally not against better foreign managers at all either - I would take Klopp or Pep in a dream world - but I do think England is a different kind of pressure and someone that knows it first hand will probably be better prepared to handle it.

Southgate coaches not to lose in big games, instead of coaching to win by being aggressive. He is reactive in his adjustments instead of being proactive and staying one step ahead of the opposition. England has improved under him (which shows how bad things were when he took over), but it doesn't seem like he has the chops to take the next step.
