  • Today I'm looking at the Greenhead Gear hot buy mallards. These are a good budget decoy that I wanted to review for new hunters, or hunting looking to max their spread bigger without breaking the bank.
These decoys are very comparable in price to Hardcore decoys and Flambeau decoys.

Little suggestion on the limited keel options. What I do is just bypass the hole they have in the keel and make a slipknotted loop around the whole keel and then you can slid the knot anywhere from the front to the back of the keel depending on the wind and the action you want. Just having that knot down the side of the keel a bit can add motion to a decoy on a light wind day and a lot of motion on a more windy day.

I run mostly game-winner cheapo for my fill-in but have a few dozen AVIAN X to really make this spread look good.

Either choice is good for some fillers, I have 2-3 dozen good dekes and the other 2 dozen hotbuys/hardcore cheapos.

I have not tried many of the Flambeau decoys, but I have came across some. The thing I don't like about the ones I've seen is how hard and brittle feeling the plastic is. They just don't feel like they'd last. I'm on my 4th season with the Hot Buys and they still look great. I only lost one decoy so far, from trying to throw it to hard with a texas rig, and it broke the hole. I repaired it and it's still hanging in there.
