  • I had some decoys from last season that needed a few small repairs. I read about duck decoy repair with JB Weld and other epoxies, so I decided to give it a try.
It worked great for small repairs and holes in decoys. For major cracks, it probably best to just replace with new decoys.

I'd not even worry that much about the glare off the pintail, when ducks take a bath they get water droplets all over their backs that can even puddle a bit for a few minutes. At least that has been my observations over the years.
I think I'd be more worried about glare from one of the camera lenses or a gun barrel then glare off a floater decoy.
Plus Mojo's have you ever stood just right and seen the amount of glare off the white side of the wings.
I bought my first mojo's this year (teal and dove) and could not believe the amount of glare. Get it just right and it looks like someone sending a mirror SOS. Now I know why sometimes watching peoples videos they feel the mojo's are flaring off ducks and pull them from the spread, it's the dang glare off the white side of the wings blinding the ducks. Personally I am going to paint the white side of the coroplast wing with flat white spray paint and get rid of most of that possible glare.

I'm not 100% sure yet. I've had a lot of camera problems in all the hunts this year. Whether it was losing something, or something just not working right. I've really only gotten footage from one hunt and the audio was terrible.

Why not sandpaper it down to kind of take the glare off?

JUST PAINT IT WITH ACRYLICS ..I USE EPOXY GLUES FOR MY SCULPTS AND ACRYLIC PAINT COVERS THE GLARE

You could sand the epoxy to take that shine out of it

I tried that a little bit, but it still wasn't looking quite right. I'll keep playing with it a bit.

Drake Valley Outdoors try a heavy grit like 80-100 to really rough it up. But go easy so you don't remove too much epoxy.

I've used this same epoxy and it's failed more times than not. Am I doing something wrong?

I’ve had mixed results. It seems to hold up well with things that don’t flex or bend. It held up for a season on fixing the broken keel hole. I think I’ve decided other expoxies would work better for issues like that, and if I decoy has a hole or crack.. you might as well just trash it unless you want to foam fill it.

Hey there, this is unrelated to the video but what does your Remington Versa Max Waterfowl Pro pattern good with. I have one and found it patterns horrible with heavy metal BB.

    • @DrakeValleyOutdoors
      @DrakeValleyOutdoors  Před 7 lety

I honestly haven't done as much patterning as I need to when it comes to different shells. Of the ones I have tried, it seems like the more simple shells pattern better. Blindsides and Black Clouds threw patterns that would definitely kill birds, but still not the best patterns. Cheap Federals and Xperts honestly threw better patterns on paper.

that's funny because I found that also with the Remington it patterned great with Federal but bad with fancy shells. Thanks for responding and love your vids

It's honestly kind of in limbo right now. I've been pretty busy and not able to focus on the channel right now. I apologize for the lack of videos.

Consider using Great Stuff to reapair your decoys. Simply drill two (2) 1/4" holes (one fill hole and one vent hole). Fill the decoy with expanding foam, trim off excess and then touch up the paint at the holes. You will never need to worry about a glossy finish or reinforcing the decoy shell. If a duck is close enough to see the painted foam, then it should probably be hanging on your game strap. Plus, if you happen to shoot the decoy in the future, the decoy will not sink and won't need to be repaired.

I would like to try foam filling some the next time I get a big crack in a decoy. I had read that Great Stuff absorbs water though. I suppose you could cover the holes below the water line with epoxy to keep the foam from getting wet. But I feel like if it started soaking up some water, it would be time to retire it again.
