Cracked After Hours is actually only taking place in the mind of Dan when he goes and eats lunch alone. To entertain himself, he projects his relatively normal coworkers into the seats next to them and has conversations with them in which everyone shares his extensive knowledge of pop culture and media.
Don’t buy it. Half the time Dan is the butt of the joke, and his win streak is pretty infrequent.

"The line "Paul is a real estate novelist" is about a real estate broker who was a regular at the bar who always claimed to be working on a book. Joel figured Paul would never finish because he was always in the bar."
And I'm willing to bet none of these theories are actually how the property came to be. They're just fun ideas.

I just assumed that's what "real estate novelist" meant. It actually seems pretty clear. There's always that "writer" who has a day job and never actually publishes things.

OtherGonzo i feel its more in katies head, her sitting in a restaurant talking to her self or in this case other personality's, or personas, Micheal beings her sexual, no holds bar weird side, which is why micheal call her a whore in some of the after hours, and her projecting that by making micheal and hefty guy with a beard, Dan being her knowledge and shy/awkwardness side, being thats there both very knowledgeable about movies and shows, and her projecting that by making him a nerd like blad guy with glasses, and Soren being her outgoing cool side, were she see's the world revolve around her, making him the hottest piece of meat on the planet.

Toy Story could easily be from the perspective of Andy, a young child with an over-active imagination thinking about what his toys get up to when he doesn't see them. Not liking the kid next door so thinking the toys are at his house when they go missing.
And the series gets darker as Andy grows older. When it's time for him to leave for college, he's scared about responsibilities and leaving his childhood behind. The toys slowly being pulled into a furnace is how he feels about his childhood, like it's being taken away from him, before he realises that it's better to move on naturally, i.e, deciding to give away the toys to the kid. It's him accepting his life as an adult and being okay with it.
Liam Walters NICE so all of the post-Toy Story 3 shorts is Andy imagining his toys are having the time of their lives when in fact... they're probably just being torn apart...
On a similar note, I love how you're equating the toys wit Andy's childhood, I always saw Woody & Buzz as parents and the entire franchise being more about parenthood than childhood -- Andy doesn't have a dad, and Woody could symbolize his own dad while Buzz the new (caring), cool step-dad that mom introduces in his birthday before "moving to a new house." Toy Story 2 shows Woody, the first dad, juggling either moving to Japan for a better career/job or staying with Andy, and Toy Story 3 about letting go of your kid as they grow up and go to college with a strange bit about being put into an elderly home where the daycare doubles as an elderly home...

"I'm getting my real estate license." and "I'm writing a novel." are two ways of saying, "I'm unemployed and likely will remain that way for a long time."
If you listen to Billy Joel's explanation of the song Paul the real estate novelist was a real estate agent who swore he was making the Great American novel every person in that story was real Billy Joel Only actually played a piano bar for about 6 months waiting out a bad record deal and after working at that piano bar he realized he had to tell the story because no one's going to believe me anyway

The old man wants his gin&tonic to be his late wife or something, the bartender wants to be a movie star, the real estate agent wants to be a novelist, the waitress wants to run for office, the businessmen want to be stoners instead of drunkards. Davy either wants civilian life, is closeted, or has PTSD from before he was discharged years before. And the narrator wants to be a carnie selling beer, I guess. I don't know how close I am to the author's intent, but the After Hours group doesn't care, and I agree; authorial intent doesn't always matter.

@@bok6122 Yeah, but coining words does, certain words and phrases had no existence in the written record before Shakespeare put them to paper, does that mean they aren't a thing? Before then sure, but they were after. Language come from a place, and if we take Dan's view then English is a dead language that will never expand to encompass new ideas and concepts, one of the most decidedly untrue things about English. Sure "real estate novelist" didn't take off, but that doesn't mean it is just a nonsense phrase. As for the observations on what he was actually describing in the Song...
An old man sitting next to me, making love to his tonic and gin, just the busted old drunk who doesn't have enough cash to get proper pissed, so he is sipping his G & T. Taking it slow and savoring it, "making love to his tonic and gin". And the song he wanted Billy to play? Well, he has no one, it isn't a specific song he wants Billy to play, he wants a song about love. He had a special person when he "wore a younger man's clothes" and the feelings were sad and sweet, and he was completely invested, almost, he couldn't commit and he lost that person, and never had that connection again, probably taking to the bottle to make up for it.
John at the bar, is a bartender, who wants to be an actor. That one is simple, New York or LA there are thousands of actors who are doing other work until they get their break. John is personable, and has the manners, but like so many won't ever get that break, but will never advance into a different dream, because he'll never commit to any other thing. The thing he could be successful at "killing" him, because it isn't his dream.
Paul, as explained is a real estate broker, who always claimed to be writing the next "Great American Novel" but was always in the bar. He never had time for a wife, because like his novel, he never made time to actually work on a relationship, preferring to spend all his off time drinking. Davey, was David Heintz, Billy Joel met him in a pub in Spain, while Davey was in the navy, back in 1972. He was just another sad soul who (in the context of the song) was never going to progress past his current lot in life. A sailor during the Viet Nam war was one of the safest, least stressful ways to serve (a corpsman attached to a Marine unit, or a pilot flying combat missions being the exception), with tons of them never approaching the conflict. In any case this one he got wrong, Davey got married and had three kids with his wife, before passing away in 2003 from the complications of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's Disease).
A waitress practicing politics, doesn't refer to political, as in running for office, but the idea of actions or words being politic, sensible, under the circumstances. In other words, she was practicing social politics. Any person in the service industry knows you do that when you are confronted by customers (particularly drunk ones) you keep your mouth shut and say what you have to in order to maximize tips. She was Elizabeth Weber, who ended up marrying Billy in 1973 (his first wife) and getting divorced from him in 1982. As for the businessmen who were slowly getting stoned, well way back when he wrote the song, stoned had fairly recently begun to mean get high, but Joel had grown up with it being a euphemism for getting drunk, so no aspirations to join the drug culture.
Finally, "the piano sounds like a carnival" is just the jaunty music he plays, trying to get the bar patrons to forget about the sad reality that is life for many of them. The same way the calliope at a carnival portends the joys we associated with childhood, but the reality of the carnival is the gruff, vaguely dangerous guys working it, trying to bilk you of a bit of money in fixed games. The joy the "piano man" brings is a bit of a lie if you scratch the surface and really look at it. "The microphone smells like a beer", the more things change the more they stay the same, the bar and the piano were here long before him and will be here (or a place like it) long after, after years the microphone (specifically the foam covering it) has been spattered with the beer the piano player (him and those before him) has drunk, so that it will never not smell like beer. The people tip him and tell him how good he is at what he does, but he (or someone like him) will always be here, "the piano man" is really no better than anyone else there who wants to be more.
Malcolm in the Middle is the world through Malcolm's eyes. Explains why his parents are so neurotic and how unrealistically stupid Reese is and how talented Dewey is. In real life they would be more normal but everything is exaggerated through Malcolm's childlike mindset. Also is a perfect reason why his family seems particularly strange compared to others, we all think we stand out and that our families are unusual, especially at his age.

Would that also apply to the Francis subplots or would that be how things are from his perspective? ‘Cause that would explain why he’s constantly a target the people above him until meeting Otto and Gretchen when he’s at his lowest and thus viewing as pretty much the kindest people in the show.
Actually, now that I think about it, that could apply to any of the subplots. In reality, Hal is just a beaten down guy who wants some kind of importance in anything he does, Reese is just a guy with ADHD, Dewy is just a forgotten younger child who feels ignored by his family and wants any kind of power, and Lois is just an SJW.
30 Rock is from Liz lemons perspective which is why everyone that works on tgs is a caricature (Jenna being so self absorbed, the writing staff being nerdy creeps, Tracy Jordan for obvious reasons and jack is a broad metaphor for tv's corporate overlords). This theory also explains why Liz eats so much and so many jokes are made about her weight even though she isn't overweight, it could possibly be liz's low self esteem clouding her perception of how she looks and the way people treat her.
That's actually confirmed. SPOILER In the series finale, it turns out the whole thing was Liz's granddaughter pitching a sitcom to NBC based on stories Liz told her. To ... Kenneth. Who, apparently, actually is some sort of immortal being and that wasn't just Liz's headcanon about why he never visibly aged.

The most depressing part about the Saved By The Bell theory is that his whole life is school. Even in his dreams, he can't escape school.
You know that sinking feeling when you're at work and as the day comes to an end your alarm goes off and you wake up to realise that you were dreaming about work, and now you have to go to work.
Zack has that every day.
I always thought that How I Met Your Mother was just a geeky guy lying to his kids about how awesome his life was before he ever had them. He is just forcing them to listen to his insane stories because it is his only way to be cool. I mean to show goes out of its way to prove how geeky he is by putting him in a sports coat and t-shirt or having him travel around Spain with a fanny pack. Yet show how he is continuously picking up gorgeous women all over the place. It just seems like he is having a mid life crisis and this is how he is getting through it, by completely lying to his kids.
You watched HIMYM and came away thinking that the guy made himself sound cooler than he was, and his idea of a cool guy was TED MOSBY? Ted's kind of a loser.
The whole point of that long winded story was to get his kids permission to ask out robin now that their mom is dead
Considering how long Ted has been Barney's best friend, he probably retold Barney's best playboy stories. But added his own personal flair of romance and dating, so it would sound believable to his kids.

That's the point. He's talking about a guy who calls himself a novelist, but never gets around to finishing his manuscript or getting published so he sells real estate for a living. One of those who talks about what he's going to do but doesn't actually do it.
"The Phantom of the Opera" could take place entirely inside Christine's head. Think about it. She's the center of attention in the story, pursued both by her handsome, wealthy childhood sweetheart and a crazy masked man who will stop at nothing to have her all to himself. Who knows, maybe in reality she was just a lonely chorus girl who'd gone insane from daddy issues and the events of "Phantom" were her way of coping with that. Maybe she never reunited with Raoul in her adult life and maybe, even, there was no Erik (the Phantom).
AND--I can't believe I'm saying this--but if it was all in her head, then the events of Lloyd Webber's musical sequel, "Love Never Dies", actually sort of make sense. She's STILL the center of attention, has a perfect musical prodigy son, is still the heroine by getting her husband out of debt, and is still wanted by the crazy psychopath who built an entire amusement park for the sole purpose of trying to win her back. If that's not an elaborate fantasy, I don't know what is.

I'm convinced now Christine is insane, Why else would she sleep with Erik the night before she got married? She got away from the psychotic madman who, in the original book, was going to BLOW UP THE OPERA HOUSE if she didn't agree to marry him. Erik could have been the hottest guy ever, but if he was that much of a murderous psycho, any sane woman would run as fast as she could.

Yeah, she isn't exactly the most developed character. Then again, the original book was written in 1911. Female characters in books back then weren't exactly three-dimensional.
And yeah, I feel bad for Raoul, too. He seemed like such a sweet, innocent guy. Granted, he does a lot of the same stalker-y things Erik did in the book, but at least he had Christine's safety in mind. And I like to think Raoul was drawn to Christine not just because she had a lovely voice and was beautiful, but because she filled something for him all his wealth couldn't/ You know, the classic "materialistic rich guy who's looking for more in his life to fill the empty emotional space".
I'd like to see an episode dicussing the show itself. It could be where they discuss why they always have to 'win' and can't just sit down like normal friends.

He IS a sociopath, just watch Funny or Die's "Zack Morris is Trash" on youtube. There's so many episodes that they review to show what a narcissistic, unempathetic p.o.s he actually was. It's hilarious, but also sad bc you begin to realize how blind nostalgia makes us.

I'd like to point out that Frasier is definitely a bad husband/romantic partner, but is a good dad.
Being separated from his son is realistic thing for divorced couples and when Frederick visits him in Seattle, he's caring, wants to do stuff with him and wants Frederick to both experience things that will make him happy (even if they don't work out that way) and things that will enrich him.
It's established that Frasier still touches base with Lilith to hear about and, presumably, to talk to Frederick and gets super excited and makes big plans for when Frederick gets to visit.
In the episode for Frederick's Bar Mitzvah, Frasier flies to Boston and (tries) to learn a whole speech in Hebrew telling Frederick how much he cares about him. Frasier apologizes when it turns out he was taught Klingon instead of Hebrew and admits that he probably embarrassed Frederick more than Lilith did when she told Frederick "don't grow up".
Later on, Frederick becomes temporarily goth to impress a girl, Andy, goes to Seattle that way because she's visiting family there too and specifically avoids spending time with Frasier so that he can spend more time with the girl. Frasier is generally tolerant of Frederick's choice of being goth (with initial, understandable questioning), confides in Niles that he feels neglected even though he's letting Frederick do what Frederick wants and then does the responsible thing by (initially) forbidding Frederick from staying at his friend's house without Frasier being able to talk to the girl's guardian. Admittedly, he does relent and allow Frederick to stay with the girl, but only after Frederick told Frasier that Frederick would have her uncle call Frasier. Then, after it doesn't work out with the girl, Frasier consoles Frederick with stories of his own romantic failings, letting him know that he isn't alone in that.
I submit that Frasier may be a lot of things (elitist, narcissistic, obsessive, hypocritical, etc.), but I believe that, at least in Frasier (the show), he was a good dad.

In case other people are wondering, what they were saying was "Rashomon". As in the "Rashomon Effect". Took me a while to figure out the spelling so I could look it up. The subtitles never seemed to get the word correct either.

Aaron Carnes Yeah, that would actually make the fact that he gets the most character development and everyone else's stories are glossed over kind of make sense. The other characters' arcs are like stuff that he was told later that doesn't really pertain to him, so he can only recount them in brief chunks without much detail. It would also explain perfectly why Ultron is created and then immediately starts attacking the Avengers. Ultron didn't really matter to Hawkeye UNTIL he started attacking them.

Community is totally from Abed's perspective! He is a loner without friends, being bullied at school, making up a universe where he can be friends with everyone, of any age or any race. He get's a best friend who he later learns he can live without, he is also friend with the most popular one. He lives with everyone he want's to, and when he sees no use for a person anymore, they move on from his life. In his universe he also make up paralell universes with evil people, wich ends up also being friends with him, and in those paralell universes the shows he likes, never get canceld. He even finds ways for him and his friends to stay at this college just so he can have friends and a girlfriend forever.
Harry potter is all from Harry's view. The first thing he hears about slytherins is that they are evil (from hagrid). The whole 7 books/ 8 movies, slytherins are irredeemably evil and automatically death eaters, even though JK rowling has stated that wizarding families from all four houses are death eaters, and all four houses have turned out dark wizards.
Lets think about this--
Slytherin wanted purebloods (b/c during his lifetime wizards were hunted by muggles and having muggle born students was dangerous);
Ravenclaw refused to teach anyone that didn't meet a certain GPA (b/c people that DONT get it are not worth explaining to);
and Griffindor only wanted daring/courageous students (b/c students those who sought glory would make HIM more famous as a teacher).
but Sytherin is the only jerk??
Ravenclaw, Griffindor, and Sytherin were all jerks. The only decent one was Hufflepuff. SHE thought education was a right or something silly like that.
Harry spends the whole book acting like hes some big underdog.
The hat tells him hes amazing. In fact, Olivander told him how great he was a chapter before that. The only underdogs are the Hufflepuffs.
But we got a whole story from the point of view of a biased Gryffindor so what do you expect?
As a Hufflepuff, I think you got it backwards, and I know this is a dead comment, but I'm mildly irritated here. Harry wasn't thinking he was an underdog, he was an abused and neglected kid who spent most of his childhood treated like absolute shit. He latches onto people who show him kindness, that's not arrogance, that's him avoiding people like his uncle and aunt.
Slytherin's don't like mudbloods, he was raised by a family who mocked his blood, so he actively avoids them as both Draco and Snape openly mock him.
Ravenclaw targets people who want to learn and grow, Harry just wanted a family, he wasn't really there to learn or seek knowledge from reading (I also doubt his academics weren't stunted from always having to be worse than Dudley).
Griffindor is about potential for action, rather than smarts or glory.
The Hat just points out his potential, which it does for everyone most likely. Olivander knows of the prophecy and sees his potential as well.
You say he's biased, of course he is! He was 11! People were HAPPY to know him, he was getting food regularly and had found family. You're mocking a child/teen for being happy in the absence of abuse, that's not very Hufflepuff of you.

You know what's really sad about that version of Cheers? The 'primary' char (in so far as, it follows him more then anyone else) is Sam, and Sam is a recovering alcoholic in the show. So, if it is told from his perspective and he is already drunk by the start of the show every episode, his life sucks.
Everyone at that table is funny as hell. Nice work, and nice work to the writers and crew! Love this channel.

Hey Arnold! isn't about Arnold. You barely know a damn thing about him, he's a tertiary character turned protagonist. Helga is the one who is the story teller here. You know more about her, her problems, her friends and family. And alot of the one's without Helga in them could be just a fever dream of what she thinks Arnold is doing.
Either the Arnold episodes are fever dreams or we are looking through Helga's eyes. Remember she does sta- follow him whereever he goes.
Thanks to Cracked, the words "terrifying", "horrible", "hidden", and "secret" have lost all meaning to me. I'm starting to suspect that this was their horrifying, hidden intention all along.

+payson terhune I think he means shows that are morally bankrupt or that teach terrible lessons, or rely on racial stereotypes. Kind of like the "Stereotypes you still see in every movie."
I always thought Zachary "Zack" Morris was a Chronopathic (i.e.: Time Controlling), Guardian Angel, that, in the tradition of Clarence from It's A Wonderful Life, was sent to Bayside High School to save the life of a few select students (i.e.: Zack's Friends): think about it, at some point, Zack has either saved or changed the life of each of his friends. That's why the show is called Saved By The Bell, because Zack has to help them before the school day ends or he won't get his Wings. 😇

I think the part about Lilith and Frasier is pushing it because
A) In "Frasier" Lilith is still pretty much the same as in "Cheers" in her first appearances, though she does develop as the show goes on
B) Fraiser is not a "terrible" father. He does care about his soon and after the divorce it tears him apart that he can't spend more time with him. Not only that, but whenever Frederick comes to visit him he goes out of his way to try and connect with him and try to be a good father, even if that sometimes means that Frederick would rather do something else than be with him

Started rewatching after hours because I just started listening to quick question. The first episode of qq I watched had siren talking about remembering names with a memory palace and it was the outro joke here!
I've seen none of these, and only understood the Saved by the Bell argument because it's been discussed before. (don't remember if it was on this show or maybe a Today's Topic or something)

Tim O'callaghan Actually, there was a theory about the true identity of the narrator in HIMYM (unfortunately, the final disproved it). Ted died after the birth of his second child. Barney, who himself grew up without a father, decided to help Mother with childcare. When the children grew up they started to call him dad. And because Barney is the greatest trickster who ever lived, he decided to devote Ted's children what he himself never had. Happy childhood. Punch line was not about Ted, how he met their mother, but how Barney revealed the true identity of their father. He started the whole series, with tales of the relationship between Ted and Robin, because that's when he began to admire Ted. I know. This theory is crazy, and it was never too popular. But it would definitely serve as a better and more memorable end of this sitcom.

Okay, I clicked on a random after hours video because I know you guys eat this kind of bizarre overthinking for breakfast. I recently saw a movie that is right up your alley in terms of crazy theories that make sense of the plot; Titan A.E.
The movie in short: humanity makes a Genisis Device called the Titan Project (ripping off star treks 2-3) and a mysterious alien race decides to blow up humanity and the Titan project. But take note; the evil aliens do not really do anything else evil. They are not concurring galaxies, blowing up anyone else's worlds, or hunting down humanity after the fact. They just wanted to destroy the Titan device and the infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities that created it.
So now is the question why destroy the Titan? There is no shortage of uninhabitable planets or asteroid belts in order to build planets in the universe. Obviously the capacity to destroy worlds is not uncommon since the bad-guys could do it and no one else is panicking like it is Unicron or the Death Star pimping in. So if destroying planets is not a big deal, then what is.
Then it hit me. After seeing that the villainous aliens were reminding me of the Vorlons from Babylon 5 I started thinking "What if these mysterious creatures made of pure energy had a higher motive?".
It did not take long to figure that this could be explained with MAD and the ABM system problem. MAD as you know (if you are not thinking of the villains from Inspector Gadget) is Mutually Assured Destruction; the idea that the only thing keeping the peace with the existence of nuclear weapons is that we are stuck in a perpetual Mexican standoff with everyone afraid to pull the trigger. In short; we will all be fucked if the shit hits the fan. No one has the advantage. That is until someone comes up with an appropriate Anti Ballistic Missile system (ABM) and fucks off the stand off by suddenly giving one side the chance to survive the shootout.
In a universe where planet destruction is an existing technology, having a force in the universe that can not only generate life sustaining worlds, but clone lifeforms on those worlds (remember, the titan had a Noah's Arch of DNA samples on it meaning they must have the facilities to generate such life), that means people can be very liberal with planet destruction. Loose a homeworld in the middle of a space war? Don't worry! Because every Klingon, Judoon, Korgan, and White Martian made a deal with the naive humans ages ago and are now spawning dozens of worlds a day with their own fleets of Titan reverse death stars. The only things that will be the destroyed is the generations of people not cloned before we start a planet-destruction-only form of galactic warfare.
And now I am convinced that is what the aliens from Titan AE were trying to prevent.
"Did you see those humans suddenly make planets disposable? What is the worst that can go wrong? It is not like they sell tanks to enemy countries on their home world or don't bother to keep track of firearms sales during social upheavals of violence. There is no way they will sell planet making devices to the Covenant from Halo, Sontarins, or the Magog from Andromeda"
