Katie's point that Forrest just parrots that line about Jenny's dad being "a very loving man" potentially from the man himself was just perfect. It puts a horrifyingly disgusting scene in my head, but, nonetheless, the point was perfect. Katie wins.
Bubba's mom didn't have "zero lines", when Forrest went to her house to pay his respects and tell her about his plan to actually become a shrimp boat captain even thought Bubba had passed, she said one of the most iconic and reused lines in the movie "You stupid, or something?".
And everyone's speechless. Man, Katie is on a roll!

I thought that Forrest Gump mimicking his mother having sex was incredibly disturbing. Not only in implication, but also because it sounds like a dying walrus or something.

I always saw the movie as this: Forest remains the same, through out every decade and every event in US history while usually being the one to unknowingly start things, while Jenny represents the changes throughout the decades, which is why every time we see her, she's different.

He's also, given her lifestyle, probably the only person she knows that she hasn't alienated.
Hell, she only agrees to marry him because she's dying and needs someone to take care of her kid... and the fact that Forrest is the father only makes it worse. The child is maybe six when Forrest first learns of his existence, so for six years Jenny hid the fact that Forrest had a son from him... information that he is legally and ethically entitled to possess.
If she hadn't gotten sick, she may NEVER have told Forrest....
And we are supposed to be sympathetic towards Jenny?
She couldn't be bothered to lick a fucking stamp and send Forrest a note saying "Hey, you got a kid!" back when she was healthy and in the prime of her life...
But soon as she finds out she's dying, it's like:
"I know! I'll go hit up that retarded doormat I used to sit on the bus with--I hear he's loaded now..."
I wonder if Jenny gave Forrest and her own son AIDS on accident. Wait did she contract AIDS or some sort of cancer?

I've read quite a few reviews that said Forest Gump was somehow "right wing". As a European I often notice cringeworthy over-the-top patriotism and weird celebrations of the Army in American movies - But I never saw it in Forest Gump. What was right wing about that movie? I mean they say if you're an idiot you're the perfect soldier. I love that film.
Forrest kind of white-washes American history. The way it treats matters of race, class, and gender relations are pretty much the way social conservatives* at the time treated them (blacks were held back because they were lazy and stupid, poor people didn't work hard enough, women made poor decisions - everyone was responsible for their circumstances).
If you look at the portrayal of the Vietnam war, it was only military personnel they considered: I have trouble recalling a single Vietnamese civilian in the movie. That's pretty much how conservatives saw it: us vs. the commies.
*I mean the standard anti-civil rights social conservatives. Not the sort you see today.
Marshall Banana Woah there Senator McCarthy, I'm not interested in advocating America-bashing. You can consider it brilliant if you like. I don't think it's a bad film frankly: just problematic because of the narrow vision. It has a lot of mass appeal, and if that works for you, that's totally fine.
What I meant about the Vietnam war was that a major part of the debate surrounding it was whether it would benefit civilians. The US wanted to project the image of a champion of democracy, so for a lot of people Vietnamese civilians or politics would be pretty important to any portrayal of that era. They gave a very specific outlook of the world, so they ignored that altogether.
As for portrayals of different people, there are different issues with each of these characters. Bubba is pretty idiosyncratic, so I'll concede that point rather than deal with that can of worms. Jenny dealt with some pretty bad circumstances, but you always get the feeling that she's making bad choices as an adult. You get the feeling that she doesn't know what's good for her, which ends up leading her down that unfortunate path. I'm not commenting on whether this is true or not. It's just a specific portrayal which could have been done differently if the directors and screen writers had chosen to do so.
As for being poor, if you've ever had to deal with not having enough money or struggling to find even mediocre jobs, you'd know laziness is rarely the only reason people who are poor often remain poor for quite a while. I'm not going to bash you for coming from a middle class background (most likely), but you're not in a position to say whether most people conform to stereotypes in a given group (except your own, whatever that may be).
***** I ceded this point already. But you could probably look at things that way (though the writers would probably say he had a simpler view rather than a wrong one).
Marshall Banana the red scare, while not entirely unfounded in regard to the reality that the cold war was ongoing, was truly an exaggeration of fear and paranoia. It was, however, not much worse than what we see today with ethnic middle eastern and Muslim individuals, who are not being given the benefit of the doubt that is theirs by right, and are persecuted for the "connection" their belief or heritage gives the to an ultra violent minority. McCarthyism was only worse because he went for people in politically significant positions to further his own cause by forcing his fellow politicians to his side in fear of being the next of his targets.
As far as Snowden goes, when it became known how Nixon abused his power, there was an appropriate outrage towards the one who committed the crime, not the one who brought it to the public. That was the way it should be today. It is sad, that an individual which sheds light onto the illegal machinations of the Government and secret service today is not held in higher regard. He did a great service to the US and the World, and any whistle-blowers should be celebrated for their courage. They are a necessary replacement to a media system which has disregarded its purpose: to promote transparency in Governance, a fundamental component of any Democracy. The Snowdon affair is in no way about the "security of the internet", it is about government institutions abusing their power in an intrinsically criminal manner, with no regard to the rights of the citizen.
If you obey authority, do what you told etc you succeed beyond any imagination. If you question authority, disobey and do things your own way you will have a shit life and die of AIDS. That's text book definition of right wing.

Why do people look SO far into these movies? Like Forrest Gump is one of the most simple movies. This guy stumbles into events happening. Who gives a shit whether or not it's something that a black man/woman is known for, whether it was a white man/woman, etc. Then when a black woman is shown as successful and Forrest is nice to another black woman: "They don't have any lines" so it doesn't count?
I was starting to find some videos in Cracked very interesting, and different, but this was extremely distasteful. Oh and who had the best point? None of you idiots.

Basically, they do it because it's a fun mental exercise to think about what some things mean beyond their simple portrayal. It can give you even deeper understanding into characters and their motivations. They may be fictional creations to us, but in that world, they are real people and should behave as such, or else the fiction falls to pieces. The world portrayed in the Forrest Gump movie is kind of shitty. And the only thing that makes it bearable to watch is the Forrest Gump character himself and how blissfully (or may not so) unaware of it all he is.
Still one of the best movies of the 90s and one of Tom Hanks' best roles, though.
hackprefect That's how that time period was though, not exactly picture perfect but that's how "hippies" or the "left wing" as these guys say were. My father fought in Vietnam and was greeted in Boston by a bunch of hippies who spat on him as he walked to the bus. My aunt was one of those "hippies" who overdosed on drugs while somewhere on some groupie road trip. That's how life was whether people want to accept it or not.

I don't think the film makers were purposely trying to disenfranchise blacks with this movie, even if that may have been a side product.
+Steven Milner Thats exactly right the issue is a sociological concept where the people involved in the movie didn't come from Black experience, obviously if you've never been a part of a certain culture in a time where there was little open discussion about these types of race concepts you won't think or even acknowledge that it might genuinely be racist/offensive to erase the truth about Elvis' appropriation of black rock n' roll and taking all the credit or make it a joke because those immersed in popular culture don't get that education and most white people don't live amongst blacks and have to think about these issues. The directors and writers and producers just think its funny because they come from popular culture stand points but the issue is that racism has been so engrained into society that this is basically what systemic racism looks like, its gotten to a point where it is the norm, where its an accident and its hard to undo now.
Unpopular Opinion: This After Hours was the most fucked-up.(In a amazing,well-written, and entertaining way)
For me Willard made the strongest point. That between the lines stuff about Jenny's molester dad and the permissiveness of the town to Forest's observation about her Dad's behavior. It singlehandedly destroys the movie's attempts at being charming. Because either the townspeople refuse to put any stake into Forest's observations because his IQ is equal to his foor size (just because he's dumb doesn't necessarily mean he's lying all you have to do is send a more reliable witness there to corroborate what he says) or they would rather not look into how he's raising his daughters because .... they don't want his kids taken away by social services? or it's just too horrifying to think about? or the amount of available jail cells is limited and they'd rather reserve that jail space for black folks ? (because it's Alabama).
Either way it's terrible. The racial stuff from the movie was also terrible too. I don't know why Zemekis has to rewrite history to give white people credit for things that black folks pioneered
Full disclusure: I have never ever liked Forrest Gump and not just because it denied Pulp Fiction the Oscar for Best Picture that year.
I think he just wanted Forest to be a part of progress and impactful events, and a lot of that was spearheaded by minorities. It is pretty problematic, but in a ignorant way, not a malicious one. Also I feel like a lot of the assumptions made in the time are reflected in the troubling implications

Forrest Gump is supposed to be the embodiment of America during that era. Tom Hanks himself said that was the goal for the movie from the beginning. So obviously he would have to be tied into the civil rights movement. And to be fair, during that era there was a lot of stupidity on the far left too. (More my kind of stupidity, but still stupidity.) I love Forrest Gump, because it's a very frank look at the America of that generation. It's a great movie, and if you'll remember Gump's friendship with Bubba is in my opinion one of the greatest stories friendship and acceptance between races of all time. It's like Forrest doesn't even recognize that Bubba was black, at all. We could use a few more Gumps in the world if you ask me.
The irony is that Forrest gets rich doing what Bubba wanted to do. I think the point of these videos is not "the person who made this had this in mind," but that "the person who made this didn't notice they were making something else entirely." Forrest Gump isn't racist, but there's a lot of shit that goes on that can be construed to be racist, if that makes sense.
Are you attempting to twist the central message of the story? Bubba died a hero, and is forever engraved in our minds as the hopeful entrepreneur. Obviously, Forrest is not beyond such reproach...

After seeing the film the first time, it seemed obvious that it had a strong conservative slant. Forrest is the ideal conservative, always doing the right thing because of his character rather than his intelligence and learning. He is mostly shot in rural Southern scenery. Jenny is the conservative's idea of a liberal: wayward, purposeless, immoral. She is mostly in city environments. Lt Dan starts out as a conservative, loses his way, then finds conservatism again and marries a Vietnamese woman, thereby making the war all right retroactively. Bubba's politics are irrelevant, he is just there to tell Forrest what he needs to know to get rich. Forrest's mother makes every sacrifice for the sake of her son, and that's the extent of her life.
Forrest is so conservatively pure that he doesn't even earn his wealth. He doesn't know how to be a fisherman. He is simply in the right place when divine intervention or dumb luck makes him a billionaire (and presumably puts all other fishermen out of business).
It's a pretty and often well-written film, but the political bias is so thick you can cut it with a knife.
Another great After Hours! This one felt a lot more natural than some of your previous recent ones. I would love to see an after hours on the worst fictional universes universes to live in. It would probably suck to be a regular, average person with a 9-5 in a world of superheroes or wizards or other fictional beings of any sort.

I would've loved it if the whole episode was them talking about Dr Dre.
Chronologically this is the second-to-last After Hours as they mentioned in the sitcom timelines episode that they have these meals consecutively every day after work but Michael says that the back to the future episode took place four years ago. The only explanation is that this is a flash-forward and thus the farthest in the future of any besides the curse episode, as it is the only one to mention that years have gone by.

I mean, the point of BttF and Forest Gump was that main characters alter or create history in comedic ways. the movies took place in the 50s-80s which were huge times for the civil rights movement. Odds are they're gonna change stuff that Black people changed.

There was a minority of the Black Panthers that were extremely militant. In fact there were quite a few of most activist groups in that time. However, for the most part they weren't as violent as they've been portrayed and were certainly not as violent as the New Black Panthers are today.

Ronald Reagan campaigned for gun laws and campaigned for the anti-assault rifles in California because of the Black Panthers and other citizens arming themselves from Prejudice of the time. Blank Panther demonstrations were exactly like the ones of present day white dudes in AZ,TX, OK, NE, UT walking around with assault rifles and other open carry firearms.Black Americans wanted that right, Reagan helped pass a bill that said no.
That is fact, (I learn much from Cracked recommend their books)

On the euphemism it wasn't that uncommon to hide stuff like this according to the actress who played the abused daughter in "Too Kill A Mocking Bird". She said that everyone knew dads who "were a little too loving" or other such hiding phrases. It was never explained what happened but everyone kind of knew what was implied.

I love this analysis. It's so great. As for the comments about comedy, I think it's quite funny.... in a this-makes-me-uncomfortable sort of way. Which doesn't mean it's not pretty spot on.

Episode idea "Luke is the bad guy in Star Wars"
The prophecy states that the chosen one is meant to bring BALANCE to the force. That means an equal amount of good and evil must exist. Anakin reduces the Jedi to 2 members (expanded universe aside) and in tern becomes the second Sith, hence balancing the force. Then Obi wan dies and look becomes a Jedi, he goes on to set the events in motion that leads to the death of Vader and the emperor. This again destabilizes the force because as far as they know only the light side exists (expanded universe aside) then in force awakens he'll probably try to destroy the remaining Sith and destabilize the force. Hence he's not the chosen one, but instead the villain.
i love how this series changes show completely, with a comedic effect. forrest gump will never be the same again

Topic Idea: the lack of basic security procedures in Star Trek TNG. I recently started showing them to my daughter, and was struck by how many dangerous situations could have been avoided if the crew had been simply trained better. Quite a number of times a crew member would see some thing strange, like an energy being float through the wall of a coridor, and simply write it of as nothing. A trick of the eyes. This show takes place years after the events of the original Star Trek, and no one ever bothered to go through Kirk's logs, tally up all the wierd shit they encountered, and work that into starfleet training? How about some slogans like, "See something wierd? Don't ignore it, report it!" "Captain acting squirley? Contact security!" "Not feeling okay? Get to sick bay!" It would've saved them from a lot of hassles.
Quite possibly the best episode of the series. Definitely some of Katie's best work.

What this episode fails to mention is that Forest Gump also satirises and skewers the right for e.g American military jingoism and futility Vietnam as well as the racism, ignorance and bigotry of the South. By Forest being a simple man not filled with malice but able to show empathy and kindness it savages the stupidity and ignorance of racism. And on the points on women...there are horrible portrayals of men for example the father being a pedophile and the macho gung ho American male soldier etc but some reason this is ignored. Both left and right are savaged in Forrest Gump, no counterpoints were mentioned in this analysis? Come on just a shred of balance guys.

I'm on board with some of the stuff about stealing black achievements (although I'm sure it was all accidental and not some scheme by Zemeckis to downplay black history) but the lynching thing is really stretching it.
It's actually a quintessential lynching situation, really. Lynching wasn't always race based, and it certainly wasn't always a hanging. They'd lynch anyone who was overtly different, which Forrest was. It's kids, so it's not an actual lynching, but the scenario is very similar.

Usually you make good points but he was spot on with Jenny. Her sexual abuse as a child led her to be both a victim and predator at the same time, not exactly a stretch. And her going with the abuser...yeah, we've never seen women do this.
And I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say the hippie thing was a symptom of her childhood abuse and not the catalyst for her getting on drugs and getting aids. Her self destructive behavior was already there. Remember when she was looking to the sky and to be a bird and fly far far away?
She was destined to fly far away because of her childhood and she did literally and physically, jumping in vehicles and taking drugs.
And when she was wishing to fly far far away, she was foreshadowing her suicidal and destructive tendencies. I think far far away was heaven.

What happened to Jenny's sisters? They literally only get a brief mention but you never ever see them and no one ever brings them up again.
I used to love watching Forrest Gump as a kid. It was one of only a dozen VHS tapes we owned, but by far my favorite. Haven't seen it in years, though, so I haven't experienced it through the lense of adulthood. After watching this I'm wondering if I should.
