This Christmas truce really happened during the First World War.
Totally agree. My Great, great Uncle John fought for the UK and survived this. My cousin has the original letters where he mentions about it.
@@markhoward2811 My grandfather was there. Sadly, he wouldn't talk about it to anyone. Shell shock, now PTSD. He passed in 1983.
@@sallycripe2697 Same here. He had been in campaigns before the Great War and was a Sergeant in his 30's at the time. He died before I was born. My Dad met him before he died in 1955. He said the only bit he would mention is the sudden quietness and the first time he ever heard 'Silent Night' being sung.
@@markhoward2811 My Grandma remembered visiting him at the camp where he took a shortened basic training. He was a history teacher after the war. I'd known him, in passing, when I was little. Then, my sr year of high school, they moved in with us. Unfortunately, by that time dimentia had set in, so talking to him at all was difficult. Things you wish you could have spoken about...
Sabaton is a Swedish metal band with lyrics of war history. One of my favourite bands. They started in 1999 and have just released their new album. And it's incredible good.
You might have heard the name Sabaton when you reacted to Nightwish, the drummer of Sabaton is married to Floor Jansen of Nightwish.
Sabaton has a huge list of good songs and they are known for their awesome videos.
Bismark
No bullets fly animated video
Night witches animated video
The last stand
Swedish Pagans live from Wacken
and many more... And yes, it's was Floor Jansen who was singing the outro, listen once again and don't turn the video off during the credits
Love their videos!
Welcome to Sabaton World. Not only great songs that tell great stories, but they have their own CZcams history channel so you can get the full story behind their songs. Beyond that, guitarist Tommy Johansson (who is a phenomenal singer in his own right) has his own channel where he does among other things, Disney/Sabaton song mashups. Needless to say, you could easily get lost in the Sabaton rabbit hole.
This metalband from Sweden just casually dropped what is in my opinion one of the absolute greatest christmas songs ever written.
Welcome to the world of Sabaton. You're about to go down a very deep rabbit hole. Enjoy the ride.
powerful voices to be sure. All of Sabaton's music is like a history lesson. This was an excellent request. I love the wording on the cross 2021 Lest We Forget! " we forget, we are doomed to repeat!"
This cross is real, no one knows who placed it there, but it is there
Yes!! Sabaton is from my hometown Falun in Sweden. The singer Joakim is from the same little village as me. We went to the small village school at the same time. His interest for music was obvious already back then and he had the same energy as you can see on stage in their live performances.
They just started touring again and I`m going to see them i Falun in 12 days.
Sabaton, I mentioned them the first time you listened to Night Wish, Floor from Night Wish is married to the Drummer of Sabaton. For your next foray into Sabaton, may I suggest Night Witches, the true story of a Women's fighter wing from World War II - also, the very beautiful clear voice that you hear during the credits of Christmas Truce, is Floor singing.
Speaking of Nightwish would love to see some more of them as well.
Sabaton is actually really good about people including their videos in reactions
Incredible! This is my type of music that I will love till the day I die. 90 something year old me will be rocking to this in the nursing home 😆
Lisen ..... Bismarck - Last Stand - Last Battle - No Bullets Fly - Soldier of 3 armies .... And more ..... Sabaton is Amazing !!!
Wow! First for me too. I'll definitely be checking out this group. Thanks for the reaction!
my daughter introduced me to this group about 20 years ago. loved them then and I love them now.
This is nothing I've everrrrr heard before... insane...ly awesome
Check you No Bullets Fly (Animated Story Video) and Night Witches (Animated Story Video) from Sabaton because it gives context on what the song is all about.
Lead singer Joakim Broden does roll the 'r's , I think I read somewhere it helps him with pronunciations, as English is a 2nd language for them. The band is named for a Sabaton, the foot piece of a medieval suit of armor.
Most of their songs are written about Military history. this one being about the one day unofficial cease fire on the Western Front in Dec 1914.
The first soldier out of the Trenches was drummer Hannes Van Dahl.
Their tour comes to the USA in October with Dutch symphonic metal band, Epica, opening.
More Sabaton to try: Bismarck (sinking of the German battleship), Soldier of Heaven (White Friday avalanches Dec 1916), Primo Victoria (D-Day 1944) , The Unkillable Soldier (Sir Adrian Carton De Wiart), or the animated videos for Night Witches (WWII Russian 588th all female night bomber regiment), or No Bullets Fly (German fighter escorts damaged B-17 back to English channel)
Also depending in what part of Sweden you live it is more common to roll the r.
The whole album this is from are true stories of WW1. The music is awesome!!!
The song that is usually credited for launching Sabaton into the World Consciousness is Prima Victoria and its official music video, definitely worth checking out
As said, this really happend on christmas day in 1914...and the cross which is portrayed in the song is real. its still there on a field in france. Evereything is real, this really happenend
The memorial cross is in Ypres, Belgium.
Sabaton do not do copyright strikes, just thought that you should know. You should check out more stuff that they have done, I very much recommend their video "Bismarck", you should do a reaction to it, also make sure that you have subtitles on, most of their videos have the lyrics with them.
Almost all of Sabatons songs are about real life events, there are very few exceptions.
It's rarely the bands themselves (since the _vast_ majority of bands actually love the whole reaction video thing), it's usually the record companies. So in this case, it's Nuclear Blast who don't do copyright strikes, and I just love them all the more for it 🥰
Swedish, not German! 🤣 That rolled R got me 🤘these guys are AMAZING!!!
Another one going down the great Sabaton rabbit hole.
95% of their songs are about history.
Don't worry about copyright claims by them. They are so chilled about reactions and it can also happen that they or partners of them comment under your videos.
You should react to Bismarck(about the German WWII battleship) and No Bullets Fly Animated History Video(watch it till the end, sometimes there comes an ad right before the last part that fooled some reactors).
After this you know two more great Songs/Videos and your Channel probably has a lot more views. Sabaton seems to be a kickstarter sometimes.
By the way, they have their own Sabaton History Channel on CZcams where they tell way more about the song topics.
You could react to the songs I mentioned and after one song, dive into the Sabaton History Episode to that song. Just a suggestion.
I knew as soon as I saw you were reacting to Sabaton for the first time, a Nightwish fan had requested it. Started watching Sabaton as soon as I knew Floor was married to their drummer. We are tribal. It is in our nature!
@@randymarple9830 I came at it the other direction. I saw this (it is one of my favorite stories from WWI so had to hear the song) and a reactor mentioned she thought Floor from Nightwish was doing the outro and then in the credits toward the end it mentions Floor was indeed the singer. So I had to hear some of her stuff. That's when I discovered Nightwish. As a child from the 60s and 70s (I'm 62 now) I heard metal and hard rock but was not that big of a fan. Then along comes Sabaton and then Nightwish and all theses years later I have become an convert.
@@phoenix9448 I had watched a reaction of Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers, and saw Phantom Of the Opera on the play list on the right side of the screen. Clicked on it and...here I am, 15 months later. I'm 74, so yeah, right there with you. Metal wasn't at the top of my list of favorites, but Nightwish has opened my ears to new and wonderful music. Still not a great fan of growling, but I no longer hate it! lol
Honestly, wasn’t 100% sure whether you were commenting on the band themselves ( yes, they are Swedish!) or who they were portraying ( half of them including the vocalist/keyboardist, bassist and drummer are in German uniforms for this. The two guitarists were on the opposite side ( one French, one English).
Whoever snuck those Vietnamese subtitles into this video in November has officially achieved LEGENDARY status!
Check out No Bullets Fly by Sabaton as well. Great song!
If I might suggest - try "No Bullets Fly" (the one that is 8:50 long - it's got a bit of animated history and then the song) - or - "Night Witches" - same thing.
You'll love the stories.
There over 90 names on the credits. They credit bus drivers, the people that dug the trenches, the caterer etc.
And how soon we forgot
I added a lot of their stuff on my Spotify after hearing this song. So powerful. They are amazing.
Sabaton is a Swedish Band whose songs are about historical military events, told from the perspective of the common soldier without choosing sides. This song is about the Christmas Truce of 1914. German soldiers were singing Christmas carols and the British troops started answering by singing Christmas carols as well. An unofficial truce was declared by the soldiers in the trenches and they ended up meeting in no man's land and exchanging gifts, sharing food, and playing football. A beautiful moment of humanity in the hell that is war. This is an amazing piece of art that perfectly captures the brotherhood of arms that all of us who have ever served are a part of. I really connect emotionally with this song and then when Floor starts singing those gorgeous vocals in the outro it gets me in the feels every time. Just beautiful! Got tickets to see them and Epica together in Boston in the fall which is going to be an incredible show.
Like all of Sabaton's songs, this really happened. If history was taught like this way more kids would be interested in history, that is why they have their own history channel.
All of Sabaton's songs? So the things in the song Shadows, that is about Lord of the Rings really happened too?
Check out "No Bullets Fly" and "Soldier of Heaven" by Sabaton.....no...don't wait...do it now...
Welcome to the Sabaton world, now you enter no way out ;)
Glad you watch till the end. Most reactors stop it when they see the first credits. Advice: Always watch a video from Sabaton and Nightwish till the very end. Sabaton is one of a kind band and adding Floor to this one is just WOW. I suggest “No bullets fly” (animated) for the next reaction.
If you want more from sabaton you should go with en livstid i krig (a lifetime of war) live scandinavium gotheburg 2020. It is the swedish version and the English subtitles are a bit of a hit and miss on the translations on some parts but the interacton from us in the crowd makes up for that, I was there, you will not regrett watching, trust me.
You already met the drummer's wife... Floor Jansen from Nightwish! Sabaton are the best way to learn history
You ABSOLUTELY need to react to the Sabaton "No Bullets Fly Official Animated Story Video" It will absolutely HIT you in the FEELS! It is a completely and verified true story from World War II and you wont believe it! Make sure to have your sub-titles turned on and watch it to the VERY END. You won't regret it! And have a box of Kleenex nearby as well.
Love Sabaton. Love your reaction. They like to do historical songs. I recommend Cliffs of Gallipoli (you know, in all of that abundant free time you have).
Garth brooks - Belleau Wood
Celtic thunder- 1915 Christmas Day
Pretty sure those songs are based off this event in history also!
Welcome to the Sabaton army, check out their CZcams sabaton history Channel , and don't worry about getting blocked with them, they actually like reaction channels
Welcome to Sabaton, the history class you never knew you needed and we all want it, because they are incredible teachers... And fun. It's hard to call them just a band when they're more like Musical Professors with a degree in epic, metal, and history, and usually all of those combined. You come for the music but you leave with knowledge... We also never have exams in this class, more like tests of emotions and energy. Remember to stay hydrated like Joakim (Their lead), because he is our most energetic professor here and also encourages exercise regularly.
And the unstoppable gravitational pull of Sabaton had claimed another, lol. They are truly an amazing group.
And such a great group of guys. They take time to acknowledge their fans.
Bismarck, Primo Victoria, Night Witches, Resist & Bite, Carlous Rex all are great songs by Sabaton. Just like this one. Soldier of Heaven and Unkillable Soldier are from the same album as Christmas Truce. I'm glad you are enjoying this music!
Please 🙏 more SABATON 💥
So much Powerrrrrrrrr💪🤘💪
And NIGHTWISH a
band from Finland.
You won't be disappointed.
They are both AMAZING
The first soldier, no bullets fly
And the Sabaton journey begins.. :) I hope! =)
Sabaton is a Swedish band that focuses their music on historical events/people. I would suggest Screaming Eagles which is about the 101st airborne division and the battle of Bastoan(forgive the spelling). Also their song To Hell and Back is a good one about Audey Murphy who was the most decorated soldier in all of WWII. My son loves the song Bismark. They actually filmed the music video on the back of a boat, out on open water. You may want to check out the channel Sabaton History for your own enjoyment. It explains a lot about the history behind each of their songs.
yeh joakim broden(lead vocals/keyboards) has a epic voice he also has epic facial hair
Well THAT was awesome. Loved it and the fact it's based on true history makes it even better. Great request Laurie. Great reaction Thx Nick 😎
Floor Jansen(Nightwish) outro, make this Masterpiece Epic.
Hannes is Floor's husband. Hannes got better the more they tried it. It's actually the band doing the acting. Welcome to Sabaton. That was Floor singing at the end.
Funny thing,. Tommy and Chris play Allied soldiers and Par, Joakim and Hannes play the Germans
From their newest album "The War To End All Wars" [WWI}: Lady Of The Dark (Official Lyric Video)-about Milunka Savić, a Serbian woman who took her brother’s place in the army-, Hellfighters (Official Lyric Video)-369th regiment was mainly African American and Puerto Rican soldiers, The Valley Of Death (Official Lyric Video). Earlier ones: Bismark, No Bullets Fly, Great War, Final Solution (this brought me to tears). There are just too many to chose from. Anything you check out from their CZcams Channel will be good. Plus their channel Sabaton History is worth listening to. They have a historian (Indy Neidell) who explains the historical events and people and a member from the band explains about the song.
Great reaction and welcome to a new rabbit hole!🤘 (And an army of fans marching in...😄). I've seen a lot of great suggestions in the comments here and I just say, do them all!😄🤘 I highly recommend their official music videos for ""Bismarck" (about the giant, German battleship from WW2), "Seven pillars of wisdom" (about Lawrence of Arabia), "To hell and back" (about Audie Murphy, the most decorated American soldier from WW2), "Devil dogs" (about the U S Marines in WW1. The footage is from their N. American tour, 2019, I think it was), "The Royal Guard" (about the Swedish Royal Guard, that's been around for 500 years. Awesome music video!) and "The unkillable soldier" (about a badass soldier, who survived just about everything... ).
Official lyric video for "Carolus Rex" (about a badass king of the Swedish empire).
For some live stuff, I'd suggest "En livstid i krig" (=A lifetime of war. Live from Gothenburg, 2020. English translation on, the song is in Swedish!), "Uprising" (live from Woodstock, Poland, 2012).
I'll get back with more suggestions... 😉 Greetings from Sweden! 🤘🇸🇪
You are in for a trip into the sabaton world... Try bissmark, no bullets fly (MUST BE FULL ANIMATED STORY VERSION),
True story.
In case no one knows this song is actually a waltz according to Joakim Brodén the lead singer and songwriter of Sabaton
Great song from a great group, as a Nightwish-Fan I appreciate this songs - and here FLOOR in the outro.
10 albums to go - 9 of them history based. Sabatonic Metal - History taught to Metal, they even have a Sabaton History Channel to expand on the events/people in the songs.
SABATON - THE PRICE OF A MILE
Nice. Thank you for your reaction.
THESE GUYS ROCK! Well said :-)
Next try "No Bullets Fly" also based on history and be sure to watch both of the epilogue materials. czcams.com/video/dslO-3GgenY/video.html
Check out Bismark next
No Bullets Fly
This is really cool - I've always seen and heard this from the trenches in France - "our" side, never from theirs. The uniforms looked Russian, but I don't know. When you said "metal" I almost clicked off of it. I'm glad I didn't. Reminds me a bit of TSO and their story videos. Thanks, Laura & Saucey.
ditto on TSO and it is probably why was drawn to them in the first place. For those who don't know TSO it is the Trans Siberian Orchastra.
Try Carolus Rex next...! 👊
Next sabaton en livstid i krig gothenburg (live) 👌👌👌
Saucey dad..You`ve been missing out ;-) ...... Go check out "Bismarck" , "Race to the Sea" and "Carolus Rex" ....You have to start from somewhere you know. ;-) I was thinking just the same as you do now a couple of years ago.....and now.....There is not a single day that I am not watching a Sabaton musicvideo or listening to at least one of their songs :-)
Oh Thank you for picking my song. Hannes is Floor Jansen's husband. This is what these guys do. They pick events and people from military history and put them to metal music. By the way that is Floor doing the outro vocal. This is the video that turned me on to these guys. I can't get enough of them. Looking at some of the comments and Chris O has a good list to start with. Also if you want to find out about the events and people Sabaton has another youtube channel called Sabaton History. It will explain the event or person(s) the songs are about. They bring history to life. I love this group.
Welcome to Sabaton , get ready to learn some history ok 1st before you do another Sabaton song - do Sabaton History on this song - czcams.com/video/LJq64dF5ZfQ/video.html then to learn more maybe the movie "Joyeux Noel" then go back and listen to the song aging. then a few other songs to check out "Sparta" / "The Last Stand" / "Swedish Pagans - Live at Wacken Open Air 2019"
Now you have a lot to do with Sabaton 🇸🇪
Suggest Bismarck...
No bullets fly (the animated story) please do
No. They are Swedish
Musically this gives me Trans Siberian Orchestra vibes.
Hi
Check out Bismarck for a good song and fantastic video.
Check out Great war for a fantastic song and just as good video.
that´s a deep Rabbithole you are entering. Stick with the live stuff of them and the animated story videos, that are mentioned plenty times in the comments ;-) trust the fanbase. we know what´s best for a newbie to get the best experience of their music. this band is just as awesome as you can imagine.
