Hahahaha.... That comment made me laugh so hard I had tears in my eyes! And it´s so true! They are expert in making me cry, and laugh, and get that warm feeling inside!
It's weird because the tune of Carol of the bells that Joakim is playing at the start is in reverse octave,
This implies sadness and hopelessness.
Later on in the song he plays it in the upper octave to symbolize Hope and Happiness.
And the end back down to the lower octaves.
His mastery of the piano never ceases to amaze me.
Well to be fair, he joined the band as a keyboarder originally.
HE started as keybord player he sing only cuz they didnt had one temporery :D
Also the beginning portion was a complete coincidence... he said in an interview that he realized after writing it that it was charol of the bells and said "well fuck it I'm gunna get called out, so I might as well acknowledge it and put I bit of carol of the bells at the end."
Yea as many other people have said, when Joakim joined the band, he originally was going to be a keyboarder. But then he became a "temporary" singer since they needed one, this turned into his permanent role.

No shame in crying: when it comes to our reflective humanity. This is such a POWERFUL story AND song! I hadn't heard about the Christmas Truce, before Sabaton... I've mostly only studied World War Two & know very little about the Great War

Glad you checked this one out, it's a very moving song and video, really amazing! The vocalist at the end is Floor Jansen who is married to Hannes (the drummer) and who sings for Nightwish, you should definitely check out their songs too! I would recommend starting with Ghost Love Score live at Wacken 2013

I'd recommend Sabaton's The Last Battle it's a very underrated song and the story behind it is incredible.
If its the one with the swiss garde than thats the event that made the swiss garde immortal around Europe.
@@Spikebhaal Different song The Last Stand's the Swiss guard. The Last Battle's about one of the last battles of the European theater of WW2, it's confusing not helped that they're from the same album.
@@td644 actually not one of the last battles in europe, it is the last battle in europe during ww2 (there might have been a few skirmishes after that point, but to my knowledge it was the last real battle) and a really epic story. Funny side note: It is also the only battle in which german/austrian (gangl was an austrian and is to this day celebrated as a hero here) and us troops fought on the same side during world war 2 and the only battle in history in which a us force fought in/for a medival castle xD

The truce lasted for 2 days.
Bertie Felstead, who died in August 2001 at the age of 106, was originally believed to have been the last survivor of the Christmas Truce. However, it later emerged that Alfred Anderson had participated in the Christmas Truce, and he outlived Felstead by four years.
This is giving me chills too and the tears are falling. So beautiful! And it is the truth.

It’s amazing just how good Sabaton truly is at getting the emotional energy of the war stories they tell into their songs, and truly this song is the pinnacle of that, I don’t think any person can listen to this song and not tear up.
You had almost the exact same reaction I did. When it said "foreign nations, is that where we bury our friends?", and then went into the chorus, I cried.

Hej! OK, so I'm going to take it in English, även fast svenska också självklart funkar. Might be more than you who are curious. The blond guy, first out of the trenches, is the drummer Hannes. The guy who throws the grenade is guitarist Tommy. The guy writing the journal is bass player Pär. The guy looking at a picture in the beginning is guitarist Chris. And on the piano we have the vocalist Joakim. 😉

You asked for Nightwish. Standard procedure is to start with Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013. Then you get a list from Gabriel and you take it from there. But you already knew that ;)
War is just the same for both sides of fighting soldiers. IMHO the series called "Band of Brothers" (2001 HBO Production) showed really great, how the war does look from the perspective of multiple different soldiers on the front. The episode 9 called "Why we fight" is a question without good, satisfying answers, that by the time will bother every soldier. Conflicts are made by the politics, pushed with orders from the officers, so soldiers can fight for them, in the glory "for the country", even if you're far from the home.
Michael, you have in the space of watching just 3 of your reactions got into my top 5 reactors and I watch a lot of reaction vids. Found you whilst searching Nightwish GLS reactions and have now watched this and your Soldier of Heaven reaction as well and I love the pure enjoyment you bring. I have reactors I watch for composition/instrumentation, vocal qualities and gear/instruments but you give me something I don't get from them and its something I cant quite put my finger on but I like it. Keep doing what you do.

I´m surprised to not see Sabaton´s cover of Motörhead´s "1916" in the playlist.
It is equally heartwrenching to see and, even more so, to listen to.

Yeah this one's a real tear jerker, no matter how many times you listen to it.
One of their best pieces and one of the few Christmas songs I'd listen to all year 'round.
I recommend: The last stand, Red Baron, Bismarck, Devil dogs, Blood of Bannockburn .....well, pretty much all of their stuff ! :)

After the truce the units involved were moved to other locations as they would no longer fight each other. And high command on both sides made sure it never happened again. I cannot think of a word vile enough to describe them.

What have to remember that they all maybe only 10 years earlier fought a war on the same side and most of them probably already made friends on the other side and now had to kill each other. This Christmas Truce was for most of them seeing through war hardened friendships end in putting a bullet in each others heads... Knowing this just makes the whole thing of Chrismas Truce even more sad but heart worming because you know that some of them might have been able to see friends again that they thought to never see again and say a final peaceful goodbye and spend a beautiful Chrismas together.
the women who sang in the ending - is Floor Jansen - she is married to the Band Leader of Sabaton - and she is the singer of Nightwish -- if you want to hear her - listen to Ghost Love Score live at Wacken 2013 - and you will hear a brilliant voice and a lot of singing technics- and if that is not enough - she was called to be part of the band in the middle of an Tour - and she had to learn the Setlist in 48hrs. and on that concert in Wacken she had beem part of the band just 5 month.

I’m sure you already know this but both sides actually had to relocate huge parts of their frontline forces after the christmas truce because large portions of the troops refused to continue the fighting

A very good French film that illustrates the Christmas Truce is "Joyeux Noël". It is one of my absolute favorite films that highlights the interconnected and unspoken bonds we share as people. It is also one of the few films that has each group speak primarily in their native language so having subtitles is a must. I speak English and French, and even then the Scots are soooo Scottish that you need subs for them too. It's a story of a glimmer of hope at the beginning of the darkness that is the first world war before even more unhinged nationalism and forced attrition is poured into the fight. It gives a more psychological "No Man's Land" that reflects the same one on the battlefield; an everwidening gulf between people.
After this evening most refused to fight each other, so they were sent to different locations of the frontline and they made sure this story wasn't passed on because it would be devastating for the will to fight.
If you don't know the movie about this incident watch it, it is named Joyeux Noël.
Nowadays it's common to think the holiday season is one day, but everyone forgets the word "season".

If we stay on Sabaton recomendations: Do a double... Livgardet and the english version of the same song The royal Guard. The videos are quite different..... The English version is of "kalabaliken i bender" while the Swedish version is more about the livgardet/royal guard itself..... one of the worlds oldest fighting units still active today. Livgardet celebrated 500 years of service last year....that is longer than a lot of countriies has existed ;)

Sabaton has made a few videos together with YarnHub. They have a version of this song as well, with more of a background story where the whole situation around the Christmas Truce 1914. The truce was not official (despite the sitting pope pleading with the leaders of the fighting countries of actually declaring an official truce over Christmas). What's really sad is that it only happened 1914. The following years you'd be court marshaled for doing something similar (regardless of which country you fought for).
And yeah, i cried too when watching it for the first time.
As for recommendations. Check out Brothers of Metal, if you want something a bit more light hearted and fun. Their song about Mead is nice.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but some soldiers refused to fight after the truce, and they had to be transported to other parts of the front.

It's already been mentioned but never end a Sabaton video before the very end (or indeed any metal artists' videos) or you might miss something very relevant.
Just stumbled upon your channel yesterday (about 200 subscribers ago, me one of them), and i'd gladly watch more.
I can recommend basically any Sabaton-Video, especially those made in cooperation with Yarnhub, but also just about any Oversimplified, Extra History and the good old "History of the entire world i guess".

You really need to check out Feuerschwanz, their new album is my favourite album of 2021.. not a single dud song on the album.. "Memento Mori" and their cover of "Warriors of the world united" is simply sublime! Other outstanding tracks: Ding, Meister Der Minne, Das Elfde Gebot, I see Fire, Metfest, Malleus Maleficarum, Hier kommt Alex, Schubsetanz (original & Black metal version), Untot im Drachenboot, Ultima Nocte & Die Hörner hoch. Not quite similar to Sabaton, But I have a feeling you will love it.

By far, my favourite Christmas song! has much more meaning nowerdays with a planet involved in war.
This is such a beautiful song about a little koment of peace and humanity in one of the worst conflicts the world has ever seen... Just think about the humanity in that very moment...The day before you killed someones friend in the other trench and have seen your friends get killed by them, yet the other day you step out of your trench, celebrate christmas whith each other, without thinking about the next day...Just think about what these men, sometimes even teenagers, must have felt...

Just a word of warning though: depending on the copy right owner behind the video/music, you might run into trouble. (some are very very harsh). Either comment on it self more often (stopping more often and adding to the content) or blocking the visual itself at least (via filter or similar measure).
Natural this isn't a must do, but depending on which music/video you pick, you may want to look up their policy first. Some of them are quick to strike/claim a channel, which would be a sad thing to happen.
The thing is, they actually refuse to fight each other any more after the truce, to the point that they have to be shuffled around the frontline to make sure they don’t think about that anymore
OMG you cut off Floor Jansen who was singing the end credits ( current singer for Nightwish & married to the drummer of Sabaton the blonde German soldier) Great Reaction, Sabaton sings mostly about historic military history from many time periods and is a great way to learn about history. this event took place in 1914 during the 1st few months of World War 1. for more on this topic there is a decent movie (2005) "Joyeux Noel" (Merry Christmas) shows the German, French & British (well a Scottish unit) , sadly when word of these events got out many units were punished and relocated to other sections of the line were the fighting was more savage. and then they made sure on holidays they would launch attacks and such. but the war took a turn and got more deadly esp once GAS started to be used in 1915 some soldier tried to repeat the event of 1914 but were shot.
they didn't return to shooting each other, that's the best/worst part of the christmas truce. they refused to kill each other after, they intentionally aimed high, this was truly a moment where man kind could have ended war all together had we just learned from the men who met the enemy as friends.
Listening now and remembering there is a war going on not to far away. But damn i also cried, so u got a Like and Abo Bro🤙🏻

I will say that " The Last Stand" is amazing! And my favorite. It's about the Vatican's Swiss Guard. " Great War" is stuck 8n my head for days after hearing it. It's so catcy. "40:1" is about Poland's fight for independence. You'll want to react to the Woodstock concert video. It was recorded in Poland on their Independence day. The "Bismark" is a very cinematic video. "Attack of the dead men" is so catchy. Also, SABATON has their own history Channel on YT. So, if you want to know what a song is about, you will learn it there. Sabaton tells stories, many of which would be forgotten otherwise, they never glorify war.
The cross at the end is real and they took the time and the chance to bury the dead in that christmas truce.
I watched the video many times but never noticed that nearly the entire production is Czech, director to extras, also recorded in Czechia. Nice. I really do hope that they'll make 1648 and will record it right here, at the Charles Bridge. :-)
