I was an EGM editor for 12 years and loved every minute of it. Thank you for this nostalgia blast!
Did not expect to see you in the comments, Thanks for all the memories!
EGM, Tips and Tricks, Game Informer, and GamePro were staples of my childhood.
Ok
It's like every page unlocks a deep vaulted memory
Loved this. I was 18/19 when this magazine came out. A good stroll down memory lane. Please do more of these
EGM was one of the best gaming magazines we had in Brazil. I used to bought every edition until MGS4 was released, around 2008 I believe. There were other really good publications, but I found them more informative and the reviews very detailed. Good times!
EGM was such an important part of my teenage years! I kept my collection for 15 years and I never got board re-reading them constantly. The review team was so genuine, relatable, informative, and hilarious!
EGM will stand the test of time as quite possibly the greatest gaming magazine of all time; and it stayed relevant LONG after others faded away into mediocrity.
Rest in peace Electronic Gaming Monthly - we'll remember you forever!
What year and month did they release their final issue?
EGM was very important to me growing up too!
Do you still have your EGM magazines? I kept most of mine for 30 years, but now I've only kept the ones I really wanted. I had hundreds and hundreds of issues.
@@littlebigkid707b2 I wish!
My older brother loved Extermination sadly he quit because he didn’t know where to go also that Toonami lockdown was a special “episode” like the Intruder before it as for Dark Cloud it’s an RPG where a the villain known as the Dark Genie is released from his pot and destroys the main characters village with intervention of the fairy king he saved the villages and its citizens and placed them in magic bubbles and gave the main character a charm to open the bubbles and now it’s up to him to save the world and stop the Dark Genie
Thanks for doing this. I was just talking to my friend about how much of a treat it was to find EGM in the mail once a month. It really was a big deal for 12 year old me haha. Keep up the great work.
I love how you keep saying "2021" instead of "2001". Keep up the good work Kai ! Cheers
Loved this video so much kai definitely need more of these I'm 38 years old now so that magazine was so surreal going back in time the nostalgia got me in my feels take me back ❤😢🔥👍
A blast from the past good times!😊
Holy crap this is one of my favorite issues of EGM! I was like 8 when that came out and I remember I was so hyped about the ps2's games (especially mgs2) and genuinely disturbed at the grand theft auto 3 screenshots (page 70).
I love going back through older gaming magazines. It always inspires me to check out games I missed growing up and gives me so much nostalgia.
Please do more Kai this was super relaxing and nostalgic
The other week, I was looting through my gaming stuff, and I found LOADS of early 2000 (maybe the odd late 90s) video game magazines. It was so much fun reminiscing 😊
Gaming magazines were my jam growing up. I had a few hundred easy so vids like this I always enjoy even if it is US mags (UK here) This could easily be a series where you go through old magazines, put some low volume music in the background (lo-fi or piano would be great) and just flip through the pages. Would make for some real comfy vids.
Nice ingredient to your varied content, Kai!
I can remember sitting on the floor in Waldenbooks back in 1989, just looking through EGM with my brother and sister. Man, I miss those days!
Damn this issue of EGM takes me back.. Aye the good old days I really do miss them. That said you really should look into the Lufia Series. There are four games in total, two on the super Nintendo and one on the GBC along with one spin-off on the GBA. If you love JRPGS you'll love this series.
Electronics boutique, even the UK had them so that definitely takes me back.
Completely forgot about EGM. It was so exciting every time a new one came in the mail. I’m sure I had that very issue.
I have never seen any of these Electronic gaming magz. They are rare to find back 1998 to early 2000s in my country(Philippines)
Edit: They are very expensive
They slash covers in the secondary market of the Philippines? I know they do, or did in the Middle East when these things would make it over there.
I used to borrow back issues of EGM and GamePro from the library! It was a way for my brother and me to find reviews of PlayStation games without having to buy the magazine. And I agree that print ads were so much more inventive back then - I remember seeing one for Unreal Tournament that looked a bit crazy.
Speaking of print ads and nostalgia, I recently flipped through some 90s comics I'd bought at a local con a while ago, and saw ads for Nickelodeon, a contest to win an N64, and on the back of one issue (it would've been from '90, I think) was an ad for Snake's Revenge and one of the Contra games, with this nutty caption about nuclear warfare.
I still have my old magazines from the 90's... GamePro, EGM, OPSM... man, I miss those times
I remember starting high school in 2001, I remember coming home finding out my family bought me metal gear solid 2 happy days indeed.
I enjoyed the hell out of this video.. you have to do more🙏🏾 it feels like me and a old buddy are looking at a gaming mag together back in the day.💯
It's crazy how many topics this video branched off into. I had to go check out that Tellerico vid (that one blew my mind), the FFXI promo vid and some of the other video games displayed here. Neat to go back and see these things.
I actually have a letter in March 2007 "Guys Got Game" - Great Video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The EB Games brand still operates here in Australia and also New Zealand. I read that it used to operate in Canada as well but they just ended up starting to rebrand it into GameStop in 2021.
Bro!!! Lizard blizzard was my favorite! And I’m still rocking the puffy skate shoes, so comfy!
Please make more videos going through old gaming magazines. I used to love those back in the day.
Thanks for the Shoutout Kai, Gaia the Dragon Champion attack with Spiral Spear Strike!
I forgot about EGM..idk how but I did. Thank you from reminding me and thanks for the content!
i like this format already
more pls!
Not sure if someone else already pointed this out but The Code Veronica X version was released on Gamecube as late as 2003 in North America and 2004 in Europe. So at the time of this magazine in 2001, the enhanced ”X” version was only out for Playstation and Dreamcast. That’s why there’s no Gamecube listed on the ad.
4:35 that "The Legend of Alon Dar" logo always looked like "Alone in the Dark" at a quick glance.
So nostalgic! I remember getting a gaming magazine in the mail and being SO excited for the demo game included 🥹
Please do more let’s read old magazines. Love this stuff. If want to that is haha
Love this idea! I recently went through all my old mags. Such a trip, take me back!!!
Ooo My Favorite Gaming Magazine To Read Was Tip & Tricks!
Thats Where I Got All Of My N64 Goldeneye 007 Cheats
Yo this was super fun! I’d be down for more content like this from you!
It's somewhat true about people not displaying anything related to games. I am now 34 and married, but my husband and I are still consumate gamers and have a bunch of figures and other trinkets that come with collector's editions of games displayed all over the house.
EGM, THE ONLY TRUE videogame journalism media platform.
I remember I was reading some strategy guides back then for games I don't even know to pass the time. Fun timtes.
Just watching this takes me back to when I was a kid and I would read Nintendo Power and GameInformer. My oldest brother had a tub of Nintendo Power magazines under his bed and we would look through them. My favorite part was looking at the cheat codes for games my family had. I still have a few of the magazines with me that have cheat codes for them. So much nostalgic fun. I really wish game companies would bring back cheat codes again like infinite ammo and invincibility. Those were the best cheat codes.
I really enjoyed this, thanks for sharing Ink Ribbon. Thinking of doing another old magazine video?
I read Hyper and Official Playstation Magazine Australia those were my go to game mags oh wow Klonoa 😄 12:43
Dark Cloud 1 is an absolute must play if you like world building, weapon building, dungeon crawling.
very Nostalgic 🥲
Thanks for the vid!
The chao garden is still there
I didn’t ask for this video but I freaking love it!!!
TMB was the first i played in the franchise, and i was so effin surprised that the first ones were more for the kids
Red Faction's multiplayer was so fun. I remember shooting the walls to make tunnels.
Yeah, was awesome. Especially the gun that could shoot through walls and the lobby map had such a Matrix lobby scene vibe to it.
7:20 lol these dark cloud pages, fun game where you rebuild destroyed villages(as shown in the page) but the graphics are cartoonish so it doesn't look like that.
Propeller Arena was the DC flight game that was basically done but was never released due to the 9/11 attacks.
Edit: this: “October” issue was likely final edited and published before the attacks. This was common in monthly issue print that the magazines wouldn’t hit shelves for 45-60 days after they began being made.
Thanks for the interesting video. I also used to be a big game mag fun in the mid 90s and early 00 years. I am from Austria so I only purchased many different gaming mags from germany. Thanks to the internet I got familiar with some US Gaming mags as well and found some nice stuff too. I really enjoyed reading EGM, Gamepro,Gamefan and Next Generation. The US also had a way better official Dreamcast Magazine. It wa way superior the to Dreamcast Mag we got in Europe.
Need more of these vids 👏👏👏
Haha when toys r us was a thing thanks for taking me back to 2001 kai
Being a lore person, you, my friend, will be quite absorbed within the world of Halo lore if you ever decide to take that plunge. There is SO much story in that series!!
Sometimes you get lucky and find a stack of these magazines in an old bookstore.
19:20 that Yugioh game, such memories.
Kai has the best content. Damn
You should totally kerp doing these, theyre pretty sweet
I have gameinformer magazines from 2007 still that I still look at and it takes me back I still have the GTA 4 cover issue where they said you can climb the telephone poles... I tried doing that and yeah no that wasn't a thing. It was oddly made as a huge detail
My dad use to work at a trash dump he one tine brought back a bundle of egm and Nintendo power once in the early 2000s we kept them in the family garage, lol like our family kept alot of shit in there
awesome~
I've loved the magazines back then. I've bought almost everything with "The Legend of Zelda" on it. ^^
Ooga Booga is really fun with 4 players.
I got my collection of old magazines .. if I was in USA .. I'd give them all to you KM 😎🌹
Please make more of these type video!!!🙏🏾
I just picked up like 12 issues from the early 2000's at my local Savers for .50 cents each :)
Dreamcast, GameCube, Mark MacDonald, Dan Shoe, classic times
Also, you can still get Pokemon Crystal on the 3DS eShop to this day! You can get all of the Gen1&2 releases!
That gran turismo license music 🎶 mannn lol you not lying that music is fire reminds me of wii sports at times with the relaxation
I got the US version and the UK version because of the different soundtracks. Both are awesome.
Oddly enough this made me remember the day I found out Gamestop existed since Game Informer also had MGS2 on the cover. It was the copy I got to take home right then by getting one of their subs, that was a great year for gaming. And my first used game was ICO and Code Veronica would soon follow as my second!
For October 2001 I guess this magazine may have been ready a bit in advance, since here in the UK magazines that got ready closer to publication were mostly full of fear about GTA3 and MGS2 possibly having delays given, y'know, fictional New York settings with lots of violence wasn't exactly a non-awkward prospect.
(In the end MGS2 apparently deleted a few things like the full sequence of Arsenal Gear crashing ashore - Federal Hall ain't exactly on the waterfront after all. GTA changed the flightpath of the NPC Dodo plus the cop car colours. Rockstar's main delay was their offices were closed for two weeks on account of being pretty close to Ground Zero.)
Man I was 3 months away from turning 18 in october 2001 lmao holy shit that was a long fucking time ago!
PC ACCELERATOR
Here for the Chao garden return 🤍❕
Don’t mean to correct anything but Batman vengeance was based on the 92’ animated series not Batman beyond Batman beyond was way later
If you find anything more of these from the 2000s please post more
I loved EGM
Dragon Quest Monsters 2 is an okay monster taming jrpg, has kind of infinite postgame too.
more of this content Ink :) :) :) :)
I also have a bunch of PSM and EGM magazines from the mid to late 90’s. Are they worth anything lol.
This guy's voice sounds exactly like a guy on the couch watching Carcinogen speedruns of Resident Evil on GDQs 2013, 2014. His look is kinda similar as well. I don't know if it's the same guy
9:33 I tried googling that ad but can't find it. I'd like to see it if anyone has a link.
Edit: nevermind I found it, and wow, talk about tone deaf advertising
Yo I had that metal gear mag
2:21 gosh that guy with the hat and the blue shirt looks like you tho lol
Soul Reaver is a classic
I really enjoy watching your videos. You're somehow just old enough that I can relate to you on some things but be completely floored when you have a knowledge gap.
Please make a video about Dead Factory P-12A
I miss the 2000s
Extermination came out like 4 years before RE4. I gave up on it.
Spider-Man 1 for PS1/DC was actually pretty good for it’s time. The sequel was alright but not at the same level as the first.
If you’re looking to Play a newer one. Insomniac’s Spider-Man is worth a good look. More so if you have a PS5.
You didn't know Pokemon Crystal was real? I literally have the cartridge from when it released back in the day
I miss EGM and Gamepro so much,
to hell with IGN
As a kid, I thought Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was the shit. But nowadays I mostly think of it as the end of Squaresoft and their eventual decline into mediocrity.
Love the idea of this, but it got a bit boring after a while. Maybe you could review some of the games advertised?
