Electronic Gaming Monthly Issue #47 - June 1993

  • Episode 22 - This week on the show, let's read EGM #47 from June of 1993. This was the very issue that got me into collecting and reading old gaming magazines when I found it at a flea market for 50 cents a few years ago. Electronic Gaming Monthly might be the most recognized and iconic gaming magazine from back in the day, even if it wasn't the best from an editorial point of view.
These episodes are edited for length and therefore do not feature every single page of the magazine, but are still probably extremely long-winded and definitely not for everybody.

If someone asked me ten minutes ago if I would be entertained by a stranger leafing through a magazine and chatting about its contents, I probably would have said no, and I would have been wrong. This is great.

Heh cool, conjured up a buried memory. 5 years old on a road trip to visit my Dad’s side of the family, my father took out the middle seat of the van (I miss that van) and my older brother and I were laying on a pile of sleeping bags and he was explaining Mortal Kombat to me while going over this issue; I kept asking about Gorro and then I would imagine him battling Blanka from Street Fighter on a grain elevator (we lived in the Midwest).
    Thanks for the flashback :)

For me this was the golden era for video game magazines. My favorite years were from 1989-1994. Screenshots did great justice for the 8 and 16-bit games. Once you get to the 32-bit era, it doesn't have the same charm. My favorites were Sega Visions, Turbo Force, EGM, and of course GamePro

There was so much to love about EGM. It never felt corporate-ish to me, it felt like the writers were fellow enthusiasts who didn't take themselves too seriously. This was in the 2000's though, I never read it during the 90's.

Nice man, I love going through all my old magazines - mostly late 80's - mid 90's stuff. Its funny to look back at what people thought would happen and the views on games of the time - you often see total classics being panned. Actually those same screenshots for Streetfighter Turbo on the SNES were used in UK magazines at the time, I certainly remember them being in Superplay, which focused alot on Japanese and American games.
PS the response to Mario All Stars was very positive and it sold well - certainly in Europe anyway. That was possibly due to the fact that the NES wasn't THAT common (it was all more about home computers and Sega as far as consoles went) - the reviewers would have played the previous games but still gave it good scores.

Play Cool Spot, if only for the soundtrack. It's Tommy Tallarico and it's amazing. Play the Genesis version because it has a built-in sound test so you can check it out. The "Rave Dancetune" that plays during the bonus stages is super fun, for instance. It's kind of a 7-up commercial, but it's got solid challenge and great controls, too. Got my copy for $10 at the local Blockbuster when they were clearance-selling less-popular Genesis titles.

This certainly takes me back. This magazine was also sold in the UK, and I remember switching to this from GamePro, which I always found a bit childish in tone. The magazine got to be pretty large, with big thick issues. Ok, quite a few ads in there, but always good content, particularly during the mid-90's when the 32-bit systems arrived. The writers were often quite witty too.

As far as reception goes I remember me and my friends putting countless hours into that cart. The graphics were just as good as SM world and they had added the ability to save your progress in any of the games to come back later. This might’ve been mentioned already, and I only know this because I just read an article about top-selling games, but the reason Tetris is so high up is tricky but obvious; they count all copies included with the system. So yeah, you can’t play ANY games without owning Tetris also, plus individual sales for replacement copies. 😅

Heh. I remember this one. When I bought my SNES, they had a deal where if you register it, you got Super Mario All Stars for free in the mail. I thought that was awesome. That's in addition to the standard pack-in of Super Mario World. So, I got 5 Mario games with my SNES! BTW, Super Turrican was cool, but my favorite is Mega Turrican on the Genesis. Some of the best music ever in that game and it just plays really tight, with no slow-down, while pushing the Genesis' sprite and scrolling capabilities. That game really surprised me by how good and polished it was.

I seem to recall a rainy Monday in 1993 - it was a holiday, may have been Veteran's Day or something, when I saw the commercial advertising getting a free Super Mario All-Stars with the purchase of a SNES.I rushed out in the rain to the local Walmart and picked one up -- it included Super Mario World in the box, but IIRC, I was able to get the All-Stars game right there for free at Walmart.I got home and plugged the SNES into my 27" Sony Trinitron (which had a Picture-In-Picture feature), and started playing away.I would plug in some headphones to my stereo and listen to CD's while playing these games, and would sometimes watch TV while playing a game in the PIP (at the time I had an NES, Sega Genesis, and SNES).All that in my little 2-bedroom apartment with my black cat named Knuckles (this was before the introduction of the Sega character, my cat's name came from the fact that he walked like he had arthritis in his knuckles from abuse from his previous owner) who would sometimes squirt out kitty diarrhea onto the carpet (shouldn't have fed him canned Kozy Kat cat food I guess).I wanted to get a Laserdisc player back then so bad as a co-worker had one and it was dope, but I didn't handle my finances so well back then, so I couldn't afford it.I would often rent old NES games at this weird, Vietnamese-owned video rental store where the always burned incense that smelled like grape juice; they also did clothing alterations there.I would also play games upstairs in the spare bedroom, where I had a Commodore Amiga 500 attached to a 21-inch Sony Trinitron; I'd sit on a love seat a neighbor gave me that smelled like cat urine, so instead of tossing it (although I always meant to replace it), I just put a bunch of towels on it so it wouldn't smell bad.

I think I still have this issue! Remember it fondly. Back in those days, the only one I missed was the issue with the Road Rash hologram on the cover. I STILL get mad thinking about how I missed it!

This took me back. All those Turbo Duo ads were effective on me. I was a freshman in high school, and I remember my classmates going in on me hard because I chose to get a TurboDuo with my Christmas money. And Street Fighter is what put me over. I didn't get to play it until I was in my mid 20's. It was good and I think that it would have helped the system. They also should have supplied the six button controllers with the system from the jump off.

I remember seeing this issue and wanting it but it was way too expensive. Eventually I got a few gaming magazines. I remember all these ads, they seem to stand out the most.

You can get magazine-sized bags and boards (like people put comic books in) if you want to protect them. They’re collectible now, after all.

I remember walking a mile to the super market to see if the new EGM came out. It was like the most awesome thing when a new issue was on the stand! I would read every single page! Then bring it to school and argue with my classmates over Sega Genesis vs Super NES (I had the Genesis). LOL! To 12-year-old me my whole life revolved around that shit.

Here in England I remember that Super Mario Allstars was reviewed very highly in magazines when released. Gamers of today have to realise that in the mid 90's we barely had access to the internet let alone digital downloads, so this release was seen as a great way for people to get access to these classics on their SNES as this would most likely have been the gamers first console and to play them otherwise would mean having to purchase a NES.

At 25:00 there's an ad for mechwarrior on SNES. I never knew that existed. We got Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries with our PC which would have been 1996 or so. We loved that game in our house, I'll have to research the SNES version.
