  • Episode 37 - Let's read Die Hard GameFan volume 1 issue 2 from December of 1992, but first let's just take a quick look at how the magazine got started:
Diehard Game Club was a video game store and mail order business in Tarzana California. The store was owned by Dave Halverson, who back then advertised his mail order business in the back of Electronic Gaming Monthly. These advertisements were created by a guy named Tim Lindquist, a layout artist who had a side-job doing freelance ad design. Halverson started distributing quarterly game catalogs to his customers, and hired Lindquist to design them. In late 1992 these catalogs morphed into the magazine Diehard Game Fan. The first issue of the magazine was actually self-published and printed at Lindquist's day job at “TV Fanfare Publications”, who published free-to-distribute magazines like “Sports & Soaps” One of the employees at the store actually drove around the Los Angeles area dropping stacks of this issue off, for free, to any newsstand willing to sell them. By the time the second issue was ready to print, Halverson had made a deal with a magazine distributor, and Diehard Gamefan was available nation-wide.
    Show notes:
    - This is the first magazine readthrough that I've done in almost exactly a year. I was planning on stopping the series, but have gotten requests for more.
    - I am still very unhappy with the quality of the video footage of the magazine itself (which is part of the reason why I stopped doing these). Unfortunately, if I don't shoot in lower light, there is too much glare from the glossy paper of the magazine. Still working on figuring out a better lighting scheme.
    - This should have been a quick episode to produce, but I wanted to up the production quality by overlaying footage of the games I was talking about, and I wanted to add the section at the beginning covering the history of the magazine. This made the episode take at least 10x longer to put together.
    - All video game footage featured in this episode was recorded using an emulator (either OpenEmu or MAME), because it just wasn't worth recording actual hardware when I was only going to use 10 or so seconds of the footage.

All video game footage featured on Classic Gaming Quarterly is recorded from actual game hardware, unless otherwise noted. As of episode 35, it is recorded in RGB using an XRGB Mini Framemeister and an Elgato Game Capture HD. Prior to that, it was recorded in s-video using am RGB to s-video encoder and a DVD recorder. All videos are edited on a MacBook Pro using Final Cut Pro X.

I'm so glad I got this in my feed.
Diehard Gamefan was my absolute favorite magazine in the world to read. I still have a big stack of these in a storage tub. Most are still in really good condition too. I loved this mag because Nick Rox and K. Lee gave a lot of love to the Sega Saturn (esp. the import games) which didn't get nearly enough of the respect it truly deserved. My best friend bought Hermie Hopperhead on PS because of the coverage it got in Gamefan.
My favorite issue has to be the Guardian Heroes issue. All the great screenshots and descriptions. Mine started falling apart because I used to spend hours looking at it and drawing fan art from it! Memories...

[Coury] My favorite magazine. I actually have a lot of weird connections with different people that wrote for the magazine late in its lifetime, for instance I edit video today because of the advice and talks I had with Hi-Fi who edited the videos for GF Online and wrote in the mag . All of these connections originated in the old GF_Tavern IRC chat room.

I really regret not taking part in the GameFan Online chat room. By that point I had moved on to IGN and GameSpot for my internet gaming news outlets. My loss. Probably a lot of classic discussion on there with ECM, Eggo, Fury, Kodomo, Cerberus, Hi-Fi, El Nino, The Judge, and the rest of the crew.

1992 was a great time to be a gamer, the Genesis had an extensive library of games already available, the Super Nintendo was really catching it's stride, and the very best of NEC with the Turbo Duo was attainable, the Neo Geo was also at a point where it was more available in and out of the arcades, and even the NES was still relevant, Arcades were a buzz with so much activity...I was starting high school and everything just seemed perfect when I think back of that time going to blockbuster every weekend ..for you know .."a weekend rental" ..thanks for all your hard work in keeping so many of us entertained with such high quality content, appreciate your passion. 👍

Gaming magazines were such a mystery to me back then. Most writers didn't use their real names, and even if they did, you'd rarely get a chance to see a photograph of them. Which is why I must say thank you for the little bit of Gamefan backstory . It was my favourite gaming mag back then, and seeing a picture of Dave cracked me up. Actually, the whole team looked like they probably spent their weekends on the Sunset Strip in the 80s.
Huge props to this episode. I enjoyed every last minute of it.

Man loved Game Fan back in the day. Only magazine brave enough to give American version of sonic cd a much lower score cause it had different music. They had the best layouts and import coverage in the industry. Still remember when they would do anime reviews toward the mid 90s. Always wondered if they owned game cave. Wish I kept the membership card I had from them, even if I never used it.

I always enjoy insight videos like this.
I have very fond memories of GameFan magazine. I actually didn't see this at the bookstore until around the 6th issue, but I fell in love with the screen shot quality, import coverage, and overall loose feel to the reviews, so I immediately called the phone number and worked out a deal with Dave himself. He agreed to sell me the first 5 back issues for just $2 each if I purchased 2 years worth of subscriptions. He even threw in a mini-catalogue "magazine" I am very happy to own a complete set of this.
That's very cool that you bought some issues directly from Tim Lindquist. I have spoken to him on many occasions and actually pulled the exact same deal with Hardcore Gamer where I started around the middle of the first year and was able to buy all of the back issues and a full subscription as a package deal.

Classic Gaming Quarterly ...and another thing: Cybernator was a good game, just as almost all Konami games were at least good, back in the day; but it was tough as balls. Ridiculously hard. People remember Contra because of nostalgia but much harder games were commonplace and Cybernator was one. Seriously. Near-impossible to finish

Tim Lindquist sounds like he'd have a ton of stories about what the gaming industry was like back then. He may have sold off his collection to you and other gamers, but it would be a fascinating video (or series) to pick his brain about those years. • @CGQuarterly
      @CGQuarterly  Před 8 lety

+Ron Fiasco Oh gosh, no. I do have most of the first year which are the hardest to get, plus random issues from subsequent years. I've stopped actively collecting magazines because I really just don't have room for any more. I have a bunch of Sega Visions, Game Players, EGM, GamePro, Mega Play, VG&CE, Nintendo Power, PSM, and of course Game Fan. They're really cool to have but take up a lot of space and weigh a ton.

Sorry it isn't the SNES launch episode, but that one is up next. I am really pleased with how this read-through episode turned out, though. I just need to figure out how to better light the magazine itself without causing glare so that the footage doesn't look so grainy.

Best damn gaming mag in the U.S. Gamers' Republic and PLAY were great too. Every publication Dave Halverson and team touched was gold. I sold all of my other gaming mags but kept the Halverson stuff (in a massive plastic bin in my garage). Die-hard GameFan was my elementary school era. GameFan was middle school. Eric Mylonas (ECM) era GameFan and Gamers Republic was high school. The competition couldn't TOUCH GameFan. Massive shout out to Halverson, Rox, Loe, Puryear, Lindquist, Wolfinger, Patterson, Griffin, Mylonas, Hodgson, Hobbs, Cockburn, Jevons, Kelly, and the rest of the crew for shaping gamers tastes through the 90's and early 00's when gaming was at its best.
If anyone wants more info and hilarious stories on the history of GameFan (LSD-laced coffee, Yoshi's Island prostitute) check out the writeup at HardcoreGaming101 and the topic over on The Next Level forums.

I like the personal stories involved with specific games.
A lot of games, even obscure ones, get talked about across many youtube channels. But if you can share details about YOUR experience with games, especially back when they first came out, that's something other video game shows can't replicate.

As a kid my favorite game mag was GamePro, but I do remember being really fond of GameFan. I loved the quality of their pages and, yes, I loved the amount of screenshots. I always felt the more screenshots the better. This was a time when getting video of games was impossible. You wouldn’t know how it looked in motion until it was in your own TV right in front of you, so yeah, screenshots were good.

My god... I remember having this exact magazine when it first came out on newsstands. The reason I remembered right away was because of the big blue Minotaur guy on the front cover. I had this issue and for some reason the original first issue seemed familiar to me as well, even though I only lived in Madison, Wisconsin for most of my life. I remember moving to Madison in 1990 when I was almost to 1st grade. I still have a bunch of these old magazines somewhere but most of them got lost to time. I really miss these books.

Yeah it is not as well-known as EGM and Gamepro, probably because they were aimed more at people my age back then (the demographic that made up the vast majority of gamers at that time). Excellent video as usual but I wanted to point out some things just in case you may not know or might have missed. I think the reason why GameFan was fawning over Cybernator is because they may have been fans of Target Earth which had come out earlier on the Genesis and had a little bit of a cult following. Both Target Earth and Cybernator are localized versions from the Assault Suits series that was pretty popular in Japan at the time. Also, while I agree with the sentiment that Konami at the time were one of the top developers as far as dropping back to back classic games, technically they only published Cybernator here in the US and it was really developer Masaya that created it. They later ventured on to doing Assault Suits sequels on Saturn, Playstation 1 and even a PS2 remake of Cybernator aka Assault Suits Valken. Other than those minor things this has been a very good and comprehensive read through of this magazine and I appreciate you taking the time to really flesh things out so there's a level of context that is so often left out of classic reviews!! I thank you! :)

+Classic Gaming Quarterly the only nitpicking that I can think of is that there is only one female character. My nieces always argue over who gets to be Blaze. Too bad there wasn't a championship edition palette swap available.
The controls are tight, the variety of moves, specials, and weapons are great. I love the music as well. When people diss the Genesis' sound I tell them to play Streets of Rage 2 and Shinobi 3 Return of the Ninja Master. There's just something about SOR 2 that never gets old, I've been playing since the late 90's. The boss' are all memorable, and although challenging, they have attack patterns to mesmerize so they aren't cheap, other than Mr. X's machine gun attack. But he's the last boss, so he should get a few hits in before I German Suplex him a thousands times.

Around 10 years ago, I threw out around 200 issues of early 90s gaming magazines from EGM, Game Informer, GamePro, Nintendo Power, etc...
The only ones I kept? Official Dreamcast Magazine #1, PSM #1, and Nintendo Power #100. All 3 are in near-mint condition. Maybe I'll do a Let's Read...

+GT6SuzukaTimeTrials Looking forward to your "Let's Read".
Though I kept all my old gaming mags (hundreds), they are certainly neat to look through occasionally wondering about how the gaming industry and the gaming consumers thought back then, and how we got excited about the upcoming release of those low-tech games. Too bad you tossed your mags out, I might have made an offer.
My most cherished mags happen to also be the Official Dreamcast mags. And the *Dave* *Halverson* works- Gamefan, Play etc. And I very much loved the short-lived *incite* *Video* *Gaming* magazine, as well as the very funny British gaming mags like the official Sega Saturn Magazine.

37:05 "The Graveyard" section is where the magazine reviews a game from the past that either predates the magazine's existence, or an old game never covered by the magazine for whatever reason. Today, we'd call it the "retro game" section. It's unfortunate they chose "Decap Attack" as their first game for the section because the "graveyard" term refers to digging up an old game from the past to review, not the theme of the game being talked about.
