  • Gion Mikaku, founded in 1929: - 2 different cuts of beef: Tajima beef filet mignon and Kobe beef rump steak with just the right amount of marbling (intra-muscular fat) and no extra-muscular fat - 400g in total for 2 people. Steak cutting behind a window in their kitchen, friendly, dedicated service, pleasant view, extra hot griddle for proper searing, right timing and handling of the steaks: they certainly know what they are doing -
This restaurant meal included garlic rice (between steak and dessert):

@Q Strange so regular restaurants that arent 300$ a luch should still be cooking fresh food and stop re-heating frozen stuff from 4 weeks ago .. still carging 50$ .. food industry is full of fraud and liars ..

@Q Strange They paid 16600¥, equals 145$, now those were 2 portions with drinks, salad and so on. So they paid a 145$ for two people and that, in my opinion, is not that bad actually, especially with the kind of presentation they got.

The price on the menu (and final bill) felt awfully cheap for Japan and high rate beef so I had a look at the website.
The 150g tenderloin meal is 22,500 *per person* which is a HUGE difference so was this a discounted price for the promotion?

My first night in Japan, I was treated to Kobe beef at a high-end steakhouse in Kobe, really fun and tasty but not my favorite meal I had there. The best food I had was in the country side at small mom and pop places. I had amazing pork Katsu and curry in Kurashiki/Okayama (a really beautiful ancient canal city with a great art museum) and great yakitori in a small bar/izakaya in a random neighborhood in Hiroshima. Every place is known for a specialty dish or prized ingredient, like Kobe beef, Nagoya Chicken, ...even small cities will have a few foods that originated there and that they are famous for like Miyajima cookies. Anyways, Its hard to find a bad meal in Japan, just don't eat at a dive bar in Shinjuku at 1am....my only bad food experience.

Well from what I know, Chefs usually find a sense of satisfaction that the food they cook can satisfy the hunger ans cravings of their customer especially when they get compliments. Also with the knowledge of cooking like that you can cook delicious food at your own home either for yourself, your peers or family. Imagine hearing your friends or family member say "Your cooking is amazing!" as they eat with joy.
