The First Council of Constantinople - and why Jesus would have wept.

  • The First Council of Constantinople was a council of Christian bishops convened in Constantinople in AD 381 by the Roman Emperor Theodosius I. This second ecumenical council confirmed the Nicene Creed, expanding its teaching to produce the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, and defined the Holy Spirit (along with Jesus) as a deity worthy of worship.
I explain why Jesus - had he observed the proceedings of the council - would have wept.

A very selective view of the council. What you have left out is the prior years of chaos, where successive Arian emperors (and councils) deposed, exiled, and persecuted both Athanasius and his supporters. There is also the precarious nature of the council, set as it was held in the middle of Arian territory. Unlike Nicaea. where Constantine just wanted unity, at Constantinople there was (finally) an emperor who wanted to re-assert the findings of the Nicene council and set the record straight. Finally, the full integration of the Holy Spirit into the creed was by now inevitable as it had been present in the Divine Triad formula since the earliest church, and since Apollinarianism was to be condemned as a heresy borne of hellenistic dualism, it made sense for Macedonianism (if you like the "Holy Spirit" version of Arianism) to be dealt with for the same reasons. While the former could be managed by tightening up the Nicene formula a little, the latter needed more specific references to the Holy Spirit and His nature.
I get that some unitarians might have preferred if Arian Christianity had prevailed. But it could never have survived as it directly contradicts scripture and is itself inherently polytheistic (not to say proto-Gnostic in terms of its view of the divine realm). You can see this in modern experience with the plight of Jehovah's Witnesses, who being neo-Arian and largely in agreement with Arian theology, nevertheless have found themselves driven to mis-translate and obfuscate parts of the Bible which clearly contradict their teaching.

    • @mikehutton3937
      @mikehutton3937 Před 3 lety

@Juley beeb I'm not quite sure why scripture comes into it when discussing this council.
I'm a Chrstian, so I suppose you have to expect some bias. I have read a translation of the Qur'an and I found it somewhat disjointed, not to say unfulfilling. The stories and illustrations in it are rarely complete when compared to the Biblical equivalent, and it lacks the narrative sweep and grandeur (not to say variety) of the Bible. I get that it's supposed to be poetry, but that doesn't really come out well in a translation.
It also contains what appears to be a number of mistakes.
The clincher for me isn't scripture though. It's Jesus. He's probably the most radical man in history, and while I can happily nail my colours to His mast, I can't say the same for Muhammad. Following Jesus makes me better, not only in myself but also in relation to the people around me. Because of Him I can see God working in the situations I encounter, and this helps me to do what I can to make things better.
Compared to that, insisting that everything "makes sense" or is philosophically clear can go hang. I've been learning as I go along for 40 years now, and it all makes a lot more sense now than back then. What I believe is "a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles". But it works, and at my core I'm an empiricist.

Not really, Christians couldn't really defy their beliefs and are divided before it was legalized in the 3th century, hence why it was divided, those people could only get some of the apostles letters and their disciple and would interpreted them themselves. Now during the council, that's what it does, it's redefining Christians belief. Fun fact is the three being debated are Trinitarian doctrine, Modalism (similar to the Trinitarian doctrine, but they believe they're all 1 persons in 3 modes unlike trinitarians who believed that they're 3 different persons 1 being) and arianism ( a belief that Jesus was also God, but He was a created God, they also acknowledged Jesus created the heavens and the earth since He is the word of God) and boi i could tell you there's none doctrine similar to muslims point of view of Jesus Christ during the council, because there's only three major doctrines here being discussed and debated

Third-person pronouns? Not a first person Noun...
In arabic, God has also used third person pronouns for Himself
La-ilaha-illa-HUWA (There is no god but He)
And because arabic and hebrew both are semitic languages, we can very well translate the term yahwea as ...
      Ya (O !)
      Huwa (He)

Well said Paul. As a follower of Jesus, i often mock Christian friends telling them they seem to confuse the number 3 with the number1. Not only for the trinity do they say 3 is 1 but also celebrated at easter is Jesus dying friday evening and rising sunday morning supposedly three days and nights in the grave! How do you relate to someone who believes 3 is 1? In this belief system numbers have no meaning. Sounds very gnostic to me.

John, in his first letter, made it very easy for true believers to identify an antichrist spirit. This is how you know the spirit of God: Every spirit which confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh...is from God. He does not say that God came in the flesh.

  • @falsesectslikeshiaarejudeo6543

    for christians:
If Creator made us pairs a sign He's 1 & Perfect, why He needs to become 3?
Follow Jesus, David, Musa, Ibrahim etc. who taught Monotheism & law of Islam!
Vs. farisi paul contradicting w/ divine sonship pretrinity, & lawless guilt!
Must God degrade into 2 to forgive or 3 to guide? or be a man who bows to God? or an Angel who bows to Man? When being 1 shows perfection! Who is the comforter to last forever in John 14 :16? (Quran 33:40)!
    1) Monotheistic salvation vs. "Divine" son-ship.
No new God forms in a womb in Job 25 :4 or at all in isiah 43 defeats John 1!
(John prologue is suspect of being an addition due to writing style)
vs. Paul - "The 1st one to declare Jesus the Son of God: Acts 9:20: "And straightway he [Paul] preached Christ in synagogues, he is the Son of God." Not of Jesus but of Paul.
Paul made the unforgivable - breaking the greatest command - salvation.
    (ultimate hypocrisy)
    Deuteronomy 6:4 &
Mark 12:29 Jesus replied, "The most important commandment: 'Listen! LORD our God is the 1 and only LORD.
Good slave/Son-ship is figurative : Dawud vs Jesus
Psalms 2:7 : Lord said unto me [David]: 'Thou art my son; this day have I begotten thee."
Luke 3 :22 - Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. A voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved son, with you I am well pleased.”[b]
**B. - Luke 3 :22 (NRSV) Other ancient texts say : You are my Son, today I have begotten you.**
So Bible's footnotes shows Jesus became a figurative son at baptism as an adult like David in original text...
Proving Islam's claim that bible's changed not only internally true but that Injil taught Islam first!
This also shows Holy spirit is present & not the comforter.
Figurative son-ship of Adam in bible, Jesus is human like him!
Luke 3 :38 - son of Enos, son of Seth, son of Adam, "son of God."
**Quran 3 : 59 - Verily, the likeness of 'Îsa (Jesus) before Allah is the likeness of Adam. He created him from dust, then (He) said to him: "Be!" - and he was.**
    2) Law & Righteousness
Deuteronomy 4 :2 - You must neither add anything to what I command you nor take away anything from it, but keep the commandments...
Psalms 119 (poem on keeping law) - 4- You have laid down precepts to be fully obeyed.
James 2 : 17 - faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.
Mathew 5 : 17 - Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; ... but to fulfill.
John 14:15 - “If you love me, keep my commandments...
vs. Paul: romans 10 :4 - For Christ is the end of the law...
What did Jesus mean by I won't leave you orphaned in john 14 :18?
**John 14 : 23 - “Those who love me will keep my word, my Father will love them, & we will come to them** & make our home with them... 26 - the Advocate (Paraclete/Ahmad), Holy Spirit, **whom the Father will send in my name,** will teach you all, & remind you all that I have said to you. **(Matches Quran 61 :6)**
Follow laws to not be an orphan & Jesus will be with you until a Prophet comes.
It's not the holy spirit - present at baptism.
john 16 : 7 - ... for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; ...
John 1 : 20 - ...“I am not the Messiah (Jesus).” 21 ... “Are you the prophet [(like Moses - Deuteronomy 18 :18) a.k.a. Muhammad peace & blessings on him]?” He answered, “No.”
    3) Mercy vs. Original sin & forgiveness through cruci-fiction!
Deuteronomy 24 :16 - `Fathers are not put to death for sons, & sons are not put to death for fathers - each for his own sin...
(Repeated in Ezekiel 18 : 20 which adds: righteousness of the righteous is on him, & wickedness of the wicked is on him.)
Matthew 19:14 - "Children come to me, & do not forbid them, for of such is the kingdom of heaven"
vs. Hebrew 9 : 22 - ... without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
28 - Christ, once having been offered to bear the sins of many, ... to salvation!
    God is above being a man (Job 25 :4) & doesn't need a "son-sacrifice" for mercy.
**Matthew 12:7: "But if ye had known what this means, I will have mercy, & not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless."** (also Mathew 9 :13)
Mathew 5:7 - Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
    Hosea 6 : 6 - "For I desired mercy & not sacrifice, ...
Isiah 1 : 18 - “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;...
    19. If you are willing & obedient,...
    (see luke 19 too)
**Quran 39 : 53 & 54 - ... Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: verily, Allah forgives ... & turn in repentance & obedience...**
    4) Cruci-Fiction isn't historical even in bible or prophetic.
Jesus is predicted to be saved from cruci-fiction,
Psalms 22: 1. My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?
    16. (scripts differ)
21 Save me from the lion : -- & -- from horns of high places, Thou answered me!
(like Mathew 26 :39 Jesus prostrates as a Muslim)
Corinthians 15 : 14 - if Christ has not been raised, then our claim & your faith has been in vain.
31 : I die daily! - (Death is often exaggerated in bible)
No direct witnesses but added on later showing bible changes :
Mark 15 : 40 - There were also women looking on from a distance;...
    Luke 23 : 49 - But all his acquaintances, ... stood at a distance,
Mathew 27 :55 - Many women were also there, looking on from a distance;...
    vs.
John 19 : 17 - Jesus Carried the cross himself...
(removing Simon likely crucified in his place)
25 - Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother...
Thesalonians 2 : 9 - The lawless one will be w/ how Satan works & use all sorts of displays of power through signs & wonders that serve the lie,
    (Matches paul)
10 wickedness deceives those who are perishing, as they refused to love the truth & be saved.
    (Matches Farisis)
**11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so they'll believe the lie.**
**Quran 4 : 157 - And because of their (boast), "We killed Messiah 'Îsa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allah," - but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but it appeared so to them, & those who differ ... follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they killed him not.**
    5) Verdict : God is 1, Islam is true!
Paul, the lawless false Prophet of Mathew 24 :11 & 12, wanted to remove the laws, Paul degraded God's forgiveness to create a polytheistic son (Acts 9, Hebrew 9 & Romans 10) against scripture (Isaiah 43 & Mathew 12 :7) to remove laws, inspired by the devil. A Perfect God needs no partners. Paul is corrected in salvation, sin & righteousness by the lawgiver & comforter Prophet Muhammad peace & blessings on him of john 1 :21 & 16 :8!
Acts 9 :3 - he (Paul) was approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him.
Luke 10 :18 - Jesus said, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning.
Mathew 24 :11 & many false prophets will arise & lead many astray.
12 & because of the increase of lawlessness,
Paul lost blessings for his tribe by removing the laws.
Jeremiah 31 : 36 - If these statutes depart from before Me, An affirmation of Jehovah, Even Israelites doth cease From being a nation before Me all the days.
    Cruci-fiction (attempt) led to lawlessness.
Mathew 21 :38 - tenants saw the son (Jesus), & said, ‘This heir; let us kill him & get his inheritance.’
& 43 Therefore I say kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people of fruits of the kingdom. (law)
Kingdom given to Ismael's tribe -
    Genesis 17 : 20 - As to Ishmael, I have heard thee; lo, I have blessed him, made him fruitful,...; 12 (Saudi?) princes & I have made him become a great nation;
even paul went to Arabia, where Ismael dwelt 1st (Genesis 21 :21 - Paran) -
Galatians 1 : 17 - nor did I go to Jerusalem to those who were already apostles before me, but I went away at once to Arabia,...
Where the global Prophet, who paul thought he was - would come to correct him (IRONY), -
**Isaiah 42 : 6 - Jehovah, did call thee in righteousness... I give thee for a covenant of a people, And a light of nations. ... 11 The wilderness & ... villages Kedar (Ismael's son) inhabits, Sing inhabitants of Sela, From the top of mountains they cry. (Mt. Selah is Medina)**
    Jesus says -
Mathew 15 : 24 - “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
**Jesus leaves his tribe for Islam on return:**
Isiah 49 :1 - ... O peoples, from afar, Jehovah from the womb hath called me, ...
**6. ... `It hath been a light thing That thou art to Me for a servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob,... I have given thee for a light of nations, - same term for Islam of Arabia in bible.**
    (& more)
paul is the lawless false prophet, so covenant is given to the fruitful Ismael - the final Prophet lawgiver like Moses, to be forever as comforter is only Nabi Muhammad peace & blessings be upon him!
Solomon songs 5 :16 - He is MUHAMMADIM - (name in Hebrew)
John 16 : 8 - & when he comes, *he will prove the world wrong on (original) sin, righteousness (law) & judgment (salvation):*
    Quran
6 : 162. **Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "Verily, my Salat (prayer), my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of the 'Alamin (creation).**
    163. **"He has no partner. And of this I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims."**
    164. **Say: "Shall I seek a lord other than Allah, while He is the Lord of all things? No person earns any (sin) except against himself (only), and no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another. Then unto your Lord is your return, so He will tell you that wherein you have been differing."**
    165. And it is He Who has made you generations coming after generations, replacing each other on the earth. And He has raised you in ranks, some above others that He may try you in that which He has bestowed on you. **Surely your Lord is Swift in retribution, and certainly He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.**

    Psalm 119:21,53,85,115,118-119,126,136,139,150,155,158 ASV
Thou hast rebuked the proud that are cursed, That do wander from thy commandments. [53] Hot indignation hath taken hold upon me, Because of the wicked that forsake thy law. [85] The proud have digged pits for me, Who are not according to thy law. [115] Depart from me, ye evil-doers, That I may keep the commandments of my God. [118] Thou hast set at nought all them that err from thy statutes; For their deceit is falsehood. [119] Thou puttest away all the wicked of the earth like dross: Therefore I love thy testimonies. [126] It is time for Jehovah to work; For they have made void thy law. [136] Streams of water run down mine eyes, Because they observe not thy law. [139] My zeal hath consumed me, Because mine adversaries have forgotten thy words. [150] They draw nigh that follow after wickedness; They are far from thy law. [155] Salvation is far from the wicked; For they seek not thy statutes. [158] I beheld the treacherous, and was grieved, Because they observe not thy word.
    Proverbs 14:34 ASV
Righteousness exalteth a nation; But sin is a reproach to any people.
    Jeremiah 23:18,35-37 ASV
For who hath stood in the council of Jehovah, that he should perceive and hear his word? who hath marked my word, and heard it? [35] Thus shall ye say every one to his neighbor, and every one to his brother, What hath Jehovah answered? and, What hath Jehovah spoken? [36] And the burden of Jehovah shall ye mention no more: for every man's own word shall be his burden; for ye have perverted the words of the living God, of Jehovah of hosts our God. [37] Thus shalt thou say to the prophet, What hath Jehovah answered thee? and, What hath Jehovah spoken?
    Deuteronomy 26:16-19 ASV
This day Jehovah thy God commandeth thee to do these statutes and ordinances: thou shalt therefore keep and do them with all thy heart, and with all thy soul. [17] Thou hast avouched Jehovah this day to be thy God, and that thou wouldest walk in his ways, and keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his ordinances, and hearken unto his voice: [18] and Jehovah hath avouched thee this day to be a people for his own possession, as he hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all his commandments; [19] and to make thee high above all nations that he hath made, in praise, and in name, and in honor; and that thou mayest be a holy people unto Jehovah thy God, as he hath spoken.
    Jeremiah 31:31-34 ASV
Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: [32] not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was a husband unto them, saith Jehovah. [33] But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith Jehovah: I will put my law in their inward parts, and in their heart will I write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. [34] And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know Jehovah; for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith Jehovah: for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin will I remember no more.

Interesting notion that Jesus could be not "fully human" ... and are you sure WE are? And what might constitute one? I mean, if you believe in ANY sort of spirituality -- you assume some sort of afterlife. And as to these skin pajamas we wear, there is no pure homo sapiens sapiens unless they cobbled one together from a hypothetical DNA baseline (sort of impossible among us part-neanderthal rh+'s). So in the Gospel of Philip there is a passage suggesting that you and I could be on a par with Jesus once we too have undergone the baptism:
"The Lord would not have said 'my father who is in the heavens'* [remind you of the Lord's Prayer?]
if he did not have another father. Instead, he would have simply said 'my father.'"
    *Matt 7:21, 10:32, 12:50, 16:17, etc, etc ...

Assalamu alaikum. According to Islam,/Quran) Holy sprit was sent to Mary with life order of Jesus ( Ruhu of Jesus). The holy sprit came to Mary and told Mary that she will be mother. of a son. Mary told how she will be mother when no male has touched her. Holy sprit/ angle Jibrail told it will happen when Allah desire. Accordingly Jibrail gave air pressure from his mouth so that ruhu of Jesus entered into Mary without physical touching of Mary by angle. So ruhu of Jesus was inserted into Mary by holy sprit through air flow from mouth of Jibrail. This is explained in Quran. So human explaination may be wrong but
God explaination is right. More Jesus was created with different way so he will be able to fight against those devil human generation who will fight against order. Of Allah. Thus Jesus will establish Islam when devil follower will try to destroy Islam. Thus Jesus will sa e his followers from crime.

Now they cannot make him son of God because there is too much condemnation of such idea in the quran so they used different method to glorify their prophet. But their are surprising similarity. In so much that they think zikr of Allah is incomplete if there is no zikr of holy prophet.

Thanks for your efforts Paul. However, I think because most of the things you and I are claiming to be truth are subjective and no man on earth can claim to know more than God Himself.
On the issue of the Holy Spirit, let give a simple analogy here. Let's look at the sun, it manifests itself by giving us light (energy) , and heat (energy), and it also has a body, which both the heat and light energy proceeds from. Is the heat produced by the sun not the sun or the light produced by the same sun not the sun. For me, it's the same just as one God who manifests Himself through His Spirit and through His word. He is greater than all, just as the physical body of the sun is greater than the light and heat energy it produces because they are from it, so also is the father greater than His word and His spirit because they proceeded from Him. Just as it's not wrong to refer to the heat energy produced by the sun as sun, then I don't think it's wrong to call either the word or the spirit of God God though He is greater than both.

      @james9077 Před 2 lety

@Just Tama I understand what you are trying to say. The spirit of God is not a by product of God neither is His word a byproduct of Him. These are eternal essence of God. They are not created or do you want to tell me that God's spirit was created just like every other thing that exists? The same applies to His word, which is eternal like God Himself. The word of God is God Himself. Don't confused manifestation with byproducts, they may look alike, but they are different. The sun, it heat and light are the same and the manifestation of its existence.

The Doctrine of Trinity did not “evolve”. There was a tacit, unwritten understanding of the person of Jesus Christ in the Early Church. It was only as deviant ideas developed (such as Arianism) that the Church was forced to formulate “Creeds” that more precisely defined what was already understood to be true. The “Councils” and the resulting “creeds” are better seen as a response to innovative ideas and doctrines that were being developed by various theologians.

The biggest question was whether or not Jesus was fully human; was Jesus a REAL man; or did He just appear to be a man. The biggest challenge was Greek gnostic understanding of spirit v flesh; material v immaterial. Flesh and the physical, material world was essentially evil; ergo, it was being taught that Jesus was not a true man. In the face of this challenge the authors of the New Testament tended to emphasise the true humanity of Christ. The Deity of Christ was not an issue; His humanity was.

His understanding of the trinity is very poor. The Father is alone the true God, that doesn't deny that Jesus Christ is also, alone, the true God. There is only one true God, that is not disputed by that passage.
But Muslims and honesty don't really mix so we expect not better.
Isn't it odd that the existence of heretics is proof, to people like him, that Christianity isn't true but the founding prophet being a paedophile and murderer doesn't cause him to doubt Islam. The hilarious double standards of the faithful praising a paedophile every day but casting aspersions on the moral character of Christ's chosen Apostles.
