The Council of Ephesus and the deification of Mary as 'Theotokos'. The Qur'an responds.

  • The Council of Ephesus was a council of Christian bishops convened in Ephesus (near present-day Selçuk in Turkey) in AD 431 by the Roman Emperor Theodosius II. This third ecumenical council condemned the teachings of Nestorius, Patriarch of Constantinople, who held that the Virgin Mary may be called the Christotokos, "Christ-bearer" but not the Theotokos, "God-bearer".
The Second Vatican Council in 1964 referred to Mary as 'Queen of the Universe'.
The increasing exultation of Mary led the Qur'an to condemn these excesses in the Christian religion:
And on Judgment Day God will say, “O Jesus, son of Mary! Did you ever ask the people to worship you and your mother as gods besides Allah?” He will answer, “Glory be to You! How could I ever say what I had no right to say? If I had said such a thing, you would have certainly known it. You know what is hidden within me, but I do not know what is within You. Indeed, You alone are the Knower of all unseen. [Qur'an 5:116]
O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: nor say of Allah aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) a messenger from Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in Allah and His Messengers. Say not "Three": desist: It will be better for you: For Allah is One God: Glory be to Him: (Far Exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs. [Qur'an 4:171]

Another great video, very interesting the trajectory from the synoptics to the 4th gospel. Mark has no birth narrative while matthew and luke both have one which both are severely flawed and disagree. Mark has no lineage but matthew and luke do and again, more inconsistencies.
It amazes me how xians can overlook these things and try to harmonize such beliefs. The more I study the nt the more I'm puzzled of 3 things. How can you believe eyewitnesses wrote these? How can you believe paul to be an apostle?, and how can you reconcile so many inconsistencies? For God's sake in Matthew's gospel 3 magi following stars give Mary gifts for jesus. WHAT? What would 3 zoroastrian clergymen have to do with jesus and why is it them? Why not 3 jewish high priests? I mean no disrespect but its just too much to overlook

Quran 40.10. Indeed, those who disbelieve will be addressed,...
      12. [They will be told], "That is because, when Allah was called upon alone, you disbelieved; but if others were associated with Him, you believed. So the judgement is with Allah, the Most High, the Grand."
      60. And your Lord said: "Invoke Me, [i.e. believe in My Oneness (Islamic Monotheism) and ask Me] I will respond to you. Verily! Those who scorn My worship [i.e. do not invoke Me, and do not believe in My Oneness, (Islamic Monotheism)] they will surely enter Jahunnum in humiliation!"

Many people don't understand the concept of "share in divinity". Ie like the Pagan Quraysh saying the Angels are the daughters of ALLAAH and they have a say (independent authority) in the affairs and running of the universe. Ie the running of the universe is broken up into portfolios and divided among a few divine individuals with one deity taking the position as Chief Deity. Clearly this concept is borned out of human minds based on their experience with running of a state.
Thetokos is a powerful claim and statement. People don't realize how much influence and authority a mother have on a son, especially in the eastern world.

On this one count I would probably agree. Most protestants, if not all, would not and do not refer to Mary as “Mother of God”. As far as I can see there is no Scriptural/Biblical support for Mary’s exaltation in the understanding of the Roman Catholic/Orthodox Churches. In Acts 1 Mary is simply rferred to as “Mary, the mother of Jesus”. I personally prefer to limit my speach where Scripture limits it.

Since we sticking to the facts we should point out that Islam is not providing a corrective but rather that the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has voiced an opinion on the subject. Anything beyond that becomes faith and belief-- which we are keen to avoid when dealing with historical matters. If Mohammad (pbuh) proclaims to be the conduit of God then surely we should not be placing limits on what God is capable of -- including manifesting himself as one of the creatures he dearly loves in order to guide them?
I do agree, however, that the metamorphosis of a woman into a divine being is rather silly and naive.
