In my opinion, Athena took advantage of the situation to exact her revenge on Medusa for taking away her followers. The fact that she refused to hear the girl's side of the story, proves that the goddess wasn't as wise as she wanted others to think. The Olympian gods were always jealous when humans worshiped other humans instead of them. Another example is Aphrodite's rage towards Psyche.
This "whole taking away followers" never happened in the Mythology. Medusa wasn't described as a Priestess in any myth
Tough to do when a roman anti authoritarian is writing it!!!

Medusa wasn't described as a Priestess in Greek Mythology
@jessicasousa5709 The priestess version was written by Ovid to make Athena look bad because the Romans favored Ares. Athena was actually very lenient when it comes to mortals who offend the gods.
Medusa's story is a tragedy. She did not deserve such a cruel fate.
Much like most women in Ancient Greek mythology
Indeed it was the gods fault. One for Poseidon raping her and two Athena putting all the blame onto Medusa!
She has always been a monster
@@kingofdragons7 biologically but on the inside not so much
@@kingofdragons7 are you talking about Athena?
Athena was the true villain in this version of the Medusa story.
Go ahead and add Poseidon in there too.
This version was more of the times of Rome. The original story was of 3 Gorgons, sisters of the Graeae. The whole Poseidon and Athena thing came later. Originally they were born monsters, 2 immortal, one (medusa) not. They were known as deadly hideous monstrous women who turned men to stone just by sight if looked upon (not just eye contact), if you physically saw one with your own eyes, you were turned to stone. The mirror loophole worked.
Yeah I remember that being the case, I just like to go with the newest views because eh why not. This one just feels cooler tbh.
Not just men, they can turn everyone into a stone.
@@janmelmeteoro5904 Can't turn anyone immortal into stone tho.
Incorrect. Hesiod is the first to mention Medusa and sisters by name and does not describe their looks or that they could turn others to stone. He does mention she lies with Poseidon. Is he known to lie with hideous women?
I feel that mirror loophole is like on the level that the Hindus eating paneer to avoid the wild hunt.
Like Artemis would NOT be impressed by dairy farming and they’re not eating farmed animals.
😂😂
Momus: "You heartless monsters! Have You No sense of compassion inside you, let alone, dignity! You've turned one of your servants to be a monster ridiculed by their visage! You are no better than the titans you've imprisoned in Tartarus!"
Poseidon: "You have no right to be here! What Athena did is admirable and-"
Momus: "Save it! The last thing we, Greco-Romans, want from you is YOUR NEVER-ENDING STUPIDITY!!!"
Who is momus?
Nvm, I got it.
MOMOS (Momus) was the god or personified spirit (daimon) of mockery, blame, ridicule, scorn, complaint and harsh criticism. He was expelled by Zeus from heaven for ridiculing the gods.
Medusa deserves more than any of this 💚.

Wait, that's my quote!
If you are gonna use Roman Myths use their Roman names Minerva , Neptune etc etc , In Greek myths Medusa was always a Gorgon along with her other Gorgon sisters.
Because people are just gonna get confused. If it’s named after a planet, it’s Roman. These are still Greek myths so why change the names?
The original version of the Medusa myth states that she was born from Phorcys and Ceto as a Gorgon from the start, along with her other two Gorgon sisters. The version everyone keeps spreading and erroneously calling the "canon" one was invented centuries later by the Roman poet Ovid, which is why there are so many inconsistencies and plot holes, especially everything about Athena (or in this case, Minerva). He used figures such as Medusa, Arachne, Callisto and others to portray the gods (i.e. the emperor Augustus) as fickle, vengeful, cruel and irrational beings, even more so than their Greek counterparts. He reimagined them as abusive because that's how he perceived the Roman politics of his time, and he REALLY didn't like Augustus. Being banished by him only exasperated the issue.
The Arachne myth also has a very unusual and jarring depiction of Athena/Minerva, where she gets uncharacteristically salty when she loses the weaving competition - thus proceeding to punish her opponent into a spider out of sheer spite and poor sportsmanship, another alteration from the original story which completely changes the point of the story. I get that this is still considered a version of the same myth but don't just ignore the original it had come from. For a channel focused on these stories you should know better.
Except that no Roman (or Greek) author ever mentioned that Medusa was a priestess of Athena/Minerva.
@@fmaximo1979 I think that might have sprung up as a result of Ovid's telling specifically mentioning the deed to have taken place in Minerva's temple, so it kind of morphed into her being a priestess to give her a reason for going there in the first place.
@@Vulomeh I.e, it is a modern invention that appeared on the internet, it is not mythology.
@@fmaximo1979 Sure, but I didn't mention it in my original comment, so I'm not even sure why we're discussing this point. She was never a priestess, that detail is a modern addition to Ovid's already drastic retelling.

Athena being the goddess of pettiness, spite, jealousy, and betrayal
This is the revised Roman story. It's centuries newer than the original origin story. She's actually supposed to be the youngest of the three Gorgon sisters.
Perhaps one of the most tragic characters in Greek mythology, or at least, in Ovid's Metamorphosis.
Also wildly inaccurate.
Medusa was born a monster.
She was never human.
She and Poseidon never interact.
This was made up, out of whole cloth, by a guy named Ovid nearly 600 years after the original.

This is just sick, for a goddess who is known for "wisdom", it's just sad. Medusa was clearly begging her for help before Poseidon got to her and Athena could still have protected her from such fate, but she decided to leave her alone and appear just to punish her after the incident had taken place 🥴
EXACTLY
6:45 Wow Athena...REALLY?🤨
And you're supposed to be the wisest and most empathetic god in the Greek pantheon. 😒
The Ovid version of the Medusa story was intended to make Athena look bad because the Greeks favored her while the Romans favored Ares.
Betrayed by the very goddess she worshipped.
Redeemed, reborn and immortalized by the same god that abandoned her, but since she never gave up faith, this is why we know her today
Medusa wasn't described as a Priestess in any myth
Personally, I think the gods of Olympus were worse than the Titans, and this is the reason why people stop worshiping them they saw them for what they really were unjust monsters.
One is left to wonder: if the story had been told by woman instead, would it have actually been Athena giving Medusa the power to never be taken without her consent ever again?
This story is about loss of innocence, betrayal, and then losing everything, but because she never gave up faith, she was rewarded by us talking about it to this day
It was just a critical thinking exercise. No need to get upset lol
Athena helped Perseus into killing Medusa, my answer would be no
In the original ancient greek version of the myth Medussa was born a monster as her sisters were. The "victim" version was an Ovid creation who despised the greek gods and loved to present them as evil beings.
1:14 Medusa had fun and wonderful life her best friend Ethically.
2:58 Well that was good.
5:31 He arrive stood between Poseidon and Medusa.
6:35 Athena said and punish the priestess.
7:46 Ethically arrive and search what happen to Medusa but turn into a stone her best friend. She ran away and turn all people into a stone who look in her eyes. She found an ancient temple in Ruins. After Poseidon push Ethically away kick out.
9:29 She prey Athena statue in ancient temple in Ruins.
10:45 Medusa look at Athena shield and then Perseus severed Medusa's head then dead. After he arrive.
11:13 Perseus returned to Athena her Aegis. She carried Poseidon's divine seed and from her blood Chrysaur was born the warrior of the golden sword and wing horse Pegasus.
12:10 Totally impressive Athena glorified Medusa by adding the gorgon's head to her shield.

After watching both seasons of Atlantis, I agree! Medusa was a victim who had a tragic end just as Atlantis did with its third season.
While Poseidon is *clearly* at fault for this atrocity bestowed upon poor Medusa, Athena proves herself unworthy of the moniker of "wisdom." How do you blame the victim of anything and just let the guilty party walk away free? Unless Athena said, "Poseidon is my uncle and Zeus would exempt him." plot armor, then she's just a bad deity. I can't believe I'm saying this but, Aphrodite is a better goddess than Athena. If Medusa chose her, then at least she could've lived her life happily.
Thank you for posting this video. People could learn alot from this story.
Finally there's a story about Medusa who was the victim of Poseidon and Athena. Medusa has always been innocent. Thank God 🙏🏻.
Athena should have listened to Medusa after Poseidon ravaged her in her own Temple but because of that, she turned the human born of sea serpents into a hideous creature that turn men into stone and because of Athena's actions and stubbornness She also caused the fall of her own Temple and the City that was named after her. I hope Athena is up in the heavens proud of herself after the horrible action she took against her most devoted Priestess
I always loved Medusa and now I am glad that she is actually a good woman and a victim
Its so sad to know that she was punished by athena
This was a later addition to her story. Originally Gorgons were just monster that were never human meaning Medusa was always just a monster.
Certainly depends on which version of the story is told and there certainly have been many through the centuries. In this version that is certainly the case.
There’s no such thing as a ‘victim’ in paganism, she just had an unfortunate fate.
In some versions she was already a monster and in other versions she consented to Poseidon and the only reason Athena cursed her was because they did it in her temple.
The stories about loss of innocence, betrayal, and literally losing everything, and because she never gave up faith in Athena. This is why we know her name and her head on a goddess shield.

Athena eventually realized her mistake and felt bad about what she did but she couldn't reverse the curse she placed on Medusa so she had Perseus euthanize her and immortalized Medusa on her shield as some sort of compensation. Today, Medusa is still depicted as a beautiful and sexy woman in pop culture and a symbol for feminism.

In Greek myth, it was never said she was born as a human. 95% of this video is just… made up and doesn’t exist in any myth. Why would you peddle your own story as Greek myth??
Also, no author ever said she was a priestess of Athena, not even Ovid. Again, no basis in any Greek myth.
I’m really disappointed you based this video on a story written by a Roman who had an agenda, and not on actual Greek myth. It’s deceiving to your viewers.
And to anyone who says “but different versions can exist and myth is evolving”. That doesn’t mean anyone can create new myths, at any time - myths are reflective of the cultural and religious beliefs, with influence of historical events sometimes, of the people who wrote them. They aren’t just fanciful stories. Ovid hated Greeks, and he hated the authorities in Rome that punished him - his story about Medusa was a way to express that anger, and the kicker? He explained her story in maybe two lines, so even he didn’t care about her at all, he just wanted a vehicle for his anger.

for the peeps complaining that this inaccurate it's just a myth people the same with the original version. None of this happened so why does it even matter. It just another version different from the original. this is a myth and so is the original it honestly doesn't matter.
It does matter, now that it's a dead relegion doesn't mean you can change is however you want. It's a part of culture and the reflection of how the people of Greece saw their gods in their writings at that time.
Imagine someone foreign person through his writings changes the events and makes up stories to assassinate the characters of their gods in a active religion right now? The believers will be furious won't they?
