  • In this first episode in an occasional series which will document progress on our new (to us) military M1102 trailer as we outfit it for overland camping, my daughter Riv (on camera and navigation duties) and I take a 700-mile (roundtrip) day trip in our trusty 3rd Gen Power Wagon from California's Central Coast, across the Central Valley and the Mojave Desert to Yermo California to collect the trailer from the GovPlanet storage facility.
    We have a 2PM deadline to reach Yermo, and despite an early setback, we make it to our destination on time. Or do we?
    Follow along with us as we work on our overland trailer build!

    Ballsy to drive it home with those tires. I picked up my Humvee from Yermo and the tires had flat spots. It was a bumpy drive until I got my new tires.

      They are run flats. :) The tires were in good shape fortunately.

    Love the overall content. Please, please keep up with posting content. To keep interest, you could edit a lot of the narrative out, and make it more of a quick video montage and have the same overall scripted result. Well done. I plan on watching what you do with the trailer to the end.

      Thanks for watching & commenting! Your suggestion is noted, I have a few more things done and need to get video edited - editing is the main bottleneck.

    I have been pondering on getting a MIL trailer. I'm relatively close to Yermo although AZ seems to have more of the 1101/1102 trailers. Anyway, I was looking at recent listings on govplanet and they cite things like brakes and lights have not been operationally checked. Did you buy yours with the same stipulations? Did you come prepared to fix things to get it home safely?

    • @fourwheeltravel
      @fourwheeltravel  Před rokem

      We took a magnetic light kit with us, making no assumption about whether the trailer lights work (though since these are mostly aluminum we ended up using some wire to help keep the lights in place). As for the brakes, these use surge brakes and are relatively light when unloaded (when towed behind a 3/4 ton truck) so the main concern is that they were not binding (they were not). And make sure to have a pintle hitch!

      @@fourwheeltravel Cool. Yeah, I figured I would just do the magnet lighting. Thanks for the reply.

    I'm surprised they didn't take their inventory GPS trackers off of it. Oops.

    I forgot to ask the other day. What did you do to tow it home as far as temporary tags? I'll be picking mine up next Friday, but haven't seen anything that shows about licensing yet

    • @fourwheeltravel
      @fourwheeltravel  Před 2 lety +1

      I just drove without tags, point to point and then kept the trailer off the public highway until the title doc (SF97 in this case) arrived. I will say that it took about 6 months (IIRC) for that to arrive, in addition to multiple emails inquiring about status, despite GovPlanet saying 30-60 days for that. YMMV.

    I would like to know how you plan on getting the trailer to ride level.

    • @fourwheeltravel
      @fourwheeltravel  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks for watching the vid! This truck is not the planned tow truck for the trailer. Our 2017 Power Wagon on 35’s takes that honor, and it is riding 1-2” higher than our ‘06 truck. That puts it within an inch of being level at the hitch with the trailer so we’ll have to see how level that rides. If it needs more height at the hitch we’ll pick up something adjustable, of which there are several choices.

      @@fourwheeltravel awesome I look forward to seeing your build. I just picked up a m1102 a few days ago and it is way too tall for my truck. I'd like to keep the big 37's and still have it sit level, maybe having a custom drop down lunette ring made.

    I'm very interested in buying one fo these. How much was total price if you don't mind me asking.

    • @fourwheeltravel
      @fourwheeltravel  Před 4 lety

      These start at a $500 reserve price on GovPlanet and seem to typically bid up to around $2,000 which is what we paid. With fees, tax etc it came out around $2,500. You may be lucky and get one for less. One thing to note is that GovPlanet doesn’t work like eBay, and specifically, when you see an item listed at say $500, there could already be bids on that item taking it much higher. You will not actually know the current highest bid unless you place a bid yourself (and even then, you'll only know if there is a higher bid than your own, you will not know the actual highest bid). This happens in the pre-auction period, there is a live auction period for each item that I think lasts an hour or so where the current highest bid is shown in real time.
