Kyle of Lochalsh | Scotland Land Rover Adventure | Travel Vlog | 4K Remaster | E5
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 We take the Calmac ferry from the Isle of Mull to the mainland and then drive to the Kyle of Lochalsh! Remastered in 4K in 2024.
We catch the ferry from Craignure on the Isle of Mull back to Oban on the Scottish mainland. We then make the scenic (but rainy) drive north in the Land Rover Defender 110 up to Fort William on Loch Linnhe, and then through Glen Sheil over to the Kyle of Lochalsh and Eilean Donan Castle. No camping today, but we do book a room at the Hotel Balmacara where we get a comfortable night's sleep and a good meal. We're surprised to see another Scotland Overland Land Rover at the hotel, but we don't run into the occupants.
This series follows our 2-week Scottish Highlands and Islands adventure from October 2018. Join us as we drive over 1,500 miles in 14 days and visit the Isle of Mull, the Isle of Iona, the Isle of Harris and Lewis, and the Isle of Skye, and drive parts of the NC500 Scottish Highlands route.

I lived in the canyon to the left of the gate at the end of the road from 1984-1987. Lots of trouble came from that direction, and my sign in those days said, "Hunters will be hunted". The local sheriff made me take it down. Rough country, great people in that area. From Google earth, it looks like someone is once again living up there.

Thanks for commenting! There are 2 signs on the gate right now, one polite and one with F-bombs. I’m sure there are good reasons for the sign. We’ve owned property on the continuation of that road since ‘97, but many (understandably) locked gates block access from the other end. The W15 is a real curiosity!

It's eleven and a half miles. I had the good fortune to spend several years driving it. It's not a good idea for tourists to travel on the road, and it's not a tourist-friendly road for urban drivers. Mike! Mike Trotter, fourth generation.

Thanks for your comment. We’d agree, and as noted in the description and in the video, “We would recommend a high-clearance vehicle. The road is rutted in places, and rocky in others. We would strongly advise against attempting this without at least all-terrain tires, and four-wheel drive or at least all-wheel drive is recommended. The road is impassable when wet, and if you've traveled this route, you will know why - there are shelf roads with sheer drops of hundreds of feet interspersed throughout the track, and there's no way I'd want to be out here in slippery conditions!”

Panoche Road was signed as very early State Route 180. There has been an “on paper” legislative definition which would extend the highway from Mendota to Pacines via Panoche Pass since 1933. Nothing serious has ever come of it and a lot of Panoche Road is now signed as County Route J1.

@@jeffhildreth9244 That's a very impressive list of vehicles! My 109 is a Euro-spec variant, rebuilt in the UK 22 years ago with a new galvanized chassis, a Turner-rebuilt engine, and a swap from RHD to LHD. It was then shipped out on a boat via the Panama Canal. Unfortunately, I have not been able to use it much in the intervening years, but it is sitting in my garage, waiting for its days in the sun. Hopefully, one day soon.

Wow, Great Video. I was just up there on Tuesday (5/7) this week and it was totally different; the grasses and the flowers were completely brown as the temperatures had started increasing. On the plus side KCL campground was almost empty, even better I drove the whole length of Soda Lake Road and didn't see a single vehicle.

Thanks for watching and commenting! In this case, I used a GoPro (a Hero 11 Mini) on an external sucker mount mounted to the roof of the truck cab, externally. I've used variations in previous videos on the same theme, sometimes with multiple cameras. Currently editing a video using an Insta360 X4 mounted in the same place to get multiple camera angles from one camera; the raw footage looks decent, and we'll see what the uploaded result looks like. Wow! Thanks for sharing this; I've been curious about this road for a while, since my vehicle barely has 8" ground clearance. Looks like it'd be fine as long as the trail is dry. I'm curious, though: Did you really drive all the way to the trailhead then turn around and drive down immediately? I don't think my giblets would be able to take all that bouncing on the way up without at least a brief stretch at the turnaround!
