Cena's rise in 02-03 was nice to watch again. You can see why WWE valued him outside of the ring and why the fans loved him inside the ring. His babyface character around WM XX is my favorite of his because of how unpredictable he could get on the mic. He would have the fans on his side and would offend anyone regardless if they were a heel or babyface. What did you think of heel John Cena?

It was fun. Watching him vs Kurt at no mercy was arguably the greatest live experience I've ever experienced. Almost made up for the most uncomfortable moment of my life when I saw Vince vs Stephenies live snuff film. That match alone is why I stopped watching wrestling.
I mean all I can add to that is that it definitely saved his career and kept him in the WWE for many years to come.
Cena being a heel really gave us the best iteration of his character known as the Doctor of Thuganomics. Dude would roast the guys in the ring and the ppl loved it.

Yeah it was great and really pushed the boundaries of what could and couldn't be on TV at the time. Aside from the money they would lose in the foreign market, turning them heel post ruthless aggression would be kind of bland. He couldn't say that stuff on a PG show. Cena roasting people will always be funny though. I talked to Paul Bearer. I spoke to him often. He told me him and Undertaker share the same coffin. Lita's a s*** run away when you meet her. I shook her hand last week and I got gonorrhea.
Yep Cena turning heel help him get a reaction from the crowds due to the fact his first gimmick wasn't getting anywhere he was about to release til Stephanie mcmahon heard him freestyle.

Cena was pushed. The rappin gig was his idea 2 use. But creative push’em hard. Really hard. Like undertaker graveyard incident that is classic wwf creative. I wouldn’t doubt a freestyle rapper was hired 2 write his raps. My guess is spanky was hired 2 write raps 4 Cena then eventually written on TV as part of the agreement 4 him writing Cena’s raps. The crowd liked the roasts Cena took off. I was fresh outa high school first year of college n called it. They r gonna push this poser as new face of the company following his rap gimmick they r using gettin him over.

Cena's heel turn in 2002 was entertaining as he was Smackdown's biggest rising star. Cena being the Doctor of Thuganomics was truly fun and amazing.
The Heel turn of John Cena not only saved him from being released, it also made him the biggest brand in the WWE. Doctor of Thuganomics was and still John Cena's best gimmick. Word Life.
Ah the Doctor of Thuganomics. What a gimmick this was. This was definitely one of the best characters ever made and Cena killed it EVERYTIME on the mic. It definitely helped made a star, and thank the lord that this happened. Always a good time.😁👍

This was obviously the start of something amazing for John Cena and the WWE as a whole. The transition to Doctor of Thuganomics was one of, if not the most entertaining character on Smackdown in the early 2000s. His raps were savage and funny af.

To think that if Stephanie didn't find Cena rap Cena would have been released this definitely launced his career to him being the face WWE for 10+yrs and my favorite wrestler of all time

the biggest win of John Cena's rookie career was when he beat Chris Jericho at the vengeance 2002 pay per view. the 25 year old rookie John Cena was very tough too. and i liked his fued with Jericho. everytime him and Chris Jericho went out there they would "steal the show" their matches were epic.

Cena's rise was very similar to Rock's.
Both started as bland white meat babyfaces with zero personalities that fans tuned out on.
Both had heel turns that gave them a personality.
Both slowly gained fan support over the months despite being heels.
Both became mega stars when they became faces again.
And apparently, there is also an upcoming guy today with the same trajectory as those guys. Started out in the main roster with horrible gimmick, played as a charismatic heel and working now on his way up

i remember every single one of these feuds John Cena had with wrestlers on smackdown except for the last match he had with rikishi actually i don't really remember any of his feuds with rikishi at all except for his first confrontation with him during the rap battle. but thank god for the internet and youtube though because now we can relive and watch all these ruthless aggression era moments from smackdown and raw. man John Cena's feuds with Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho were "awesome" and "epic." especially the Kurt Angle feud.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
It's never talked about on exactly how John Cena turned heel when he attacked Billy Kidman after a match they had it's almost. It's almost like in everyone's mind one day Cena was a face the next he wasn't.
He didn't become my number one favorite wrestler till 2005. But I did enjoy what he did during this time.

Nice vid. It was a spectacle, original, entertaining I'll give it that. His wrestling has always left more to be desired but even he admitted that. He always knew how to freshen up, how to reconnect and stay relevant. I admire the hell outta him for that. That and what he has done as a goodwill ambassador for the company that made it possible, rarely slighting them and when it has happened it was never malicious and had a moral highground. uh actually i don't think John Cena was a heel when he was the Dr of thuganomics character. most people on smackdown were cheering him and liked rapper cena i like him too so that makes him a face. there was only one time in his career when cena was heel that was in march of 2003 when smackdown general manager Stephanie McMahon held a tournament to determine the new wwe tag team champions and Billy Kidman was John Cena's partner in the tournament. they lost a match and then Cena blamed Kidman for the loss and turned on him and attacked him turning heel for the first time and only time in his career. P.S and by the way edge and rey mysterio ended up winning that tournament and becoming the first wwe tag team champions. i can't remember who they beat though for the belts i think it was kurt angle and chris benoit.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥.
