  • It's the age-old debate, whos the greatest to ever do it? For many it's an easy answer Stone Cold, The Rock, Taker, etc... but does John Cena actually have a legit case to be the definitive greatest of all time? In this video I examine Cena's legacy and see, does he really belong in that conversation?

Honestly, I would personally yes. He’s simply one of the biggest names in pop culture where almost everyone knows about him nowadays, it’s insane. While his wrestling skills may not be the best, his legendary moments and rivalries during his prime, really made up for it. It’s the storytelling that matters at the end of the day. This man really has done it all. Regardless of what others think of him, I’ll forever love Cena to the bottom of my heart for giving me the most enjoyment as a kid during Ruthless Aggression and PG.

Cena was always a good wrestler. Guys who've wrestled with him always praise his in-ring work and he was safer to work with. The 5 moves of doom were introduced during the PG era, and his moveset was limited. Yes he was big enough to tweak it there and there in which he would in some matches, but Cena has always been "doing what's good for business" and what's good for business was his 5 moves which resonated with his massages like "never give up" and "rise above hate" which essentially means take a beating, then counter and win. The kids were his target audience and during his prime I was in my early teens, I never had a problem with him not turning heel. It would've been devastating with him turning heel because like most kids, he was a Superhero and you can come to South Africa today and you'll find even non-wrestling fans know about John Cena. He is the goat for what he has done for the company. Without him, the wrestling industry probably would've died out.

Nope. . Cena is top 10 in wwe for sure but not the goat in wwe. The best WWE eras were attitude Era ( 97-01).. golden era( 80's ) and ruthless Agression ( 02-08)...Cena was only the face in 2nd half of ruthless Agression - the weak half of ruthless Agression)..Being a top guy in ra2, pg and rest never makes him goat. In superstar level in ,Bruno Summortino, Steve Austin and Hogan with Rock is a level above him without doubt. Then overall considering everything Taker, hbk, Bret hart etc are definetely above him. Cena is top 10.

@@user-bi5nw4vp6t the weak half? 2005-2011 was peak WWE and Cena was the reason for their global reach. I'm South African and nobody cared about Wrestling until that era on this side of the world. Even non-wrestling fans will tell you who John Cena is, not for acting but for his wrestling. And this was a time where we thought wrestling was real and not choreographed or scripted. We thought they were fighting for real and Cena was a bad ass. You Americans have a tendency of underrating your top guys and i'll tell you this, 70% of the rest if the world thinks John Cena is the goat. Yes he is not a traditional wrestler or his style isn't othordox, but he still is the best to do what he does. He is the Messi of this sport! What a wrestler is in their personal life, how much of a role model they are, etc. shouldn't make a damn day's difference on how good of a WRESTLER they are/were. That's so illogical to me. Cena is a great dude. But that has zero to do with wrestling, so that should not impact whether or not he's considered a good wrestler.
Chris Benoit killed his family and himself, so he gets shit on at every turn. Yeah. That was a fucked up thing to do. Does that act make him a terrible person? Yes. But does it have ANYTHING to do with his wrestling ability? Nope. @@hugo254hcm I personally prefer more technical wrestlers, yes, but I'm not saying they're the overall professional wrestling GOATs only because of that. My comment was more of a knock on the original commenters post mentioning all of the things Cena does outside of professional wrestling playing a part in where he should be ranked. In that same vein, people will discount other wrestlers for negative things they've done outside of wrestling. To be the greatest in my opinion, you need to be good-great in all aspects of pro wrestling: in-ring skills, promo skills, and the ability to get over with the fans, whether that be people cheering or booing you, as long as they're invested in what you're doing.
If we look at all wrestlers mentioned, I’d rate them this way:
John Cena - in-ring: 3 stars, promo: 5 stars, getting over: 4 stars, for a total of 12 stars.
Chris Benoit - in-ring: 5 stars, promo: 2 stars, getting over: 3 stars, for a total of 10 stars.
      A.J. Styles - in-ring: 5 stars, promo: 3 stars, getting over: 4 stars, for a total of 12 stars.
Rey Mysterio - in-ring: 5 stars, promo: 2 stars, getting over: 4 stars, for a total of 11 stars.
Other notable wrestlers mentioned in the video’s intro:
Steve Austin - in-ring: 3 stars, promo: 5 stars, getting over: 5 stars, for a total of 13 stars.
Undertaker - in-ring: 4 stars, promo: 3 stars, getting over: 4 stars, for a total of 11 stars.
The Rock - in-ring: 3 stars, promo: 5 stars, getting over: 5 stars, for a total of 13 stars.
Hulk Hogan - in-ring: 1 star, promo: 5 stars, getting over: 5 stars, for a total of 11 stars.
Finally, wrestlers that are often mentioned in GOAT conversations:
Bret Hart - in-ring: 5 stars, promo: 3 stars, getting over: 4 stars, for a total of 12 stars.
Kurt Angle - in-ring: 5 stars, promo: 3 stars, getting over: 3 stars, for a total of 11 stars.
Ric Flair - in-ring: 4 stars, promo: 5 stars, getting over: 5 stars, for a total of 14 stars.
Shawn Michaels - in-ring: 5 stars, promo: 3 stars, getting over: 4 stars, for a total of 12 stars.
Now, obviously all of my star ratings are just my opinion, but they are malleable and I could be convinced otherwise. According to this metric though, I suppose I’m going with Flair as the GOAT.

John Cena was the sole megastar carrying the WWE at a time when wrestling as a whole was dying off. Hulk Hogan was in the Golden era and you absolutely have to give him credit, but there was also Rick Flair. Stone Cold and the Rock had each other and they saved WWE-but WCW was also booming. Since the beginning of that super Cena era, wrestling itself was dying due to the decline of cable television, the UFC, and the boom of streaming services that let you watch anything at anytime. He was the guy that kept wrestling afloat, and that combined with his success, mainstream appeal, longevity, and commitment to the craft make him the GOAT in my eyes.

For that you are talking about guys like daniel bryan, aj styles, kurt angle. For others it is who was the most entertaining in ring and on mic you have guys like rock, cm punk, shawn michaels. The you have longevity with guys like cena, jericho and orton. But you can also define it as who is the most iconic and then you have hogan, austin, and undertaker. Each definition has a different goat but cena really is the mix of them all and i think that is why he is the goat.

    Longevity: Cena is the GOAT
Making WWE Mainstream: 2nd behind the Rock
Merch: 2nd behind Steve Austin (surprised rey didn't beat him too with the mask)
Most popular to young audience: Cena again
Wrestling skill: no where near the top 10 he's great but not in that level and I'd say HBK is the best in ring
    Reinvention: Jericho
(Personally as a kid I loved the Chain Gang Cena and the Dr of Thuganomics)
On Mic: I'd put him up there but think CM Punk,The Rock,Jericho,The Miz ahead of him
Achievements: up there with Edge and HHH
Character: I'd say undertaker is the only person to beat him
Legacy: He shares the top spot with Hulk Hogan IMO
Is he the GOAT (my opinion):
    1.Cena
    3.Stone Cold
    4.HBK
    5.The Rock
    6.Hulk Hogan

@@andraiy644I can't be arsed to write a new explanation on it again but this is a comment I made on a vid about the miz and I just like how loyal and hard working he is:
I don't go around saying this about most people but he really is a top 15 wrestler for me he's a legend and is the most under appreciated wrestler ever.
he stayed while John Cena, Dwayne Johnson left for Hollywood (not a dig at them btw) or when superstars like jericho, hardy, mox and more left for better opportunitiesIn AEW.
He was the best part of smackdown along with AJ Styles in 2016-17 and genuinely restored prestige in the IC championship and made it feel important.
And while he isn't exactly RVD or Daniel Bryan In the ring he's still great and has great knowledge of how to pace matches while connecting with the fans and bieng charismatic
The biggest issue with him is that he's so loyal and never expects more I get that he's not on the level of some main eventers but with how reliable he is and how hard he's worked if he wasn't so compliant I'm sure he'd be a top star on the main event scene just look at HBK. But that could also be viewed as a good thing because he understands his role and understands professional wrestling.
With all this and his charisma on the mic I think he deserves a few more title runs and maybe a world championship run before he has to retire he's one of my favourite wrestlers ever (behind Jeff Hardy stone cold HBK Cena HHH and Jeticho tho) and deserves to be treated as a star

People don't really understand the impact this man had on kids. I just turned 19, which means I spent the prime of my wrestling fandom as a kid watching John Cena in Super Cena mode, winning day in day out. He was my favorite. He was my idol. Still is. And not just about the brilliant moments. It's not just about the titles. It's not just about the wins and losses, the highs and lows, his in ring ability or his unmatched charisma. It's more on how he affected me, especially when I was a kid. You see, Cena effected us differently. He was our Hero. Our Superhero. I lived by his principles all my life. Hustle, Loyalty, Respect. Never Give Up. I didn't realise it as I started watching WWE live less frequently since Cena went part time, but then it hit me when Cena returned last year. I had been living my life by his principles. None of my school friends were Wrestling fans like me, so I could clearly see the difference. John Cena was a massive part of my education and upbringing. He taught me a lot. I was senior most in school last year, definately got a lot of praise and also time to talk to people and give speeches, and people and I myself noticed that I was always so Humble with things, always thanking everyone else and saying I'd be nothing without them, and I was loyal af for things I liked, and for my people. The hustle and the never give up attitude too. The determination. And then last year when Cena returned and talked on the mic, I could almost draw parallels with how the man was speaking. I was literally imitating the man without knowing it all this time. Then was the time it hit me. I would say the man I admire most in my life rn is Lionel Messi, but NO ONE has affected my life more than my true idol, my inspiration, my superhero, John Cena. HLR.

I believe he is indeed the Greatest of all Time. You managed to lay it out perfectly. This man is the Goku of wrestling. The perfect character, who was reliable and super hardworking. And he came at a time when the company would need him the most. I don't believe Rock, Hogan or Austin could've led wwe out of the Benoit tragedy like Cena did. Just by him doing what he did with his squeaky clean character, and the charitable actions, he saved and even promoted wwe's image when the company needed it the most. His matches were also good. He was even able to get a good match out of Khali. And the later years were fantastic. His match against aj styles at Royal Rumble 2017 was in my opinion, possibly the Greatest match of all time. I honestly can't think of a better 1 on 1 match, no interruptions, no shenanigans, nothing-just good wrestling bell to bell. His rivalries were also phenomenal. From kurt Angle, to Booker T, to Jbl, to Big Show, to Hhh, to Shawn Michaels, to Edge, y2j, Randy Orton, Batista, Miz, R-Truth, Dolph Ziggler, Cm Punk, Delrio, The Rock, Mark Henry, Daniel Bryan, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns. Cena always made his stories matter, just by opening his mouth. Hogan was great. And so were Austin and Rock. They were all great in their own way, and Roman is great too now, but Cena takes it because of his loyalty to the Greatest wrestling company on earth, his toughness, his respect for the business, his passion, his kindness outside the ring, his consistency and never give up attitude, his epic moments in the ring, and his combined accomplishments in the ring and in the main stream. He is the Greatest, and I'm just thankful that I experienced 18 of those 20years. He made my childhood just a bit more sweeter even though I enjoyed booing him for most of it. But now as an adult, Cena's character makes so much sense to me.

And to be honest everyone want to see their fav wrestler on the top, but hating John Cena blindly for that is just wrong.
Another example could be, when roman start beating all the legends in the wwe like undertaker and was like winning every matches, he was also started getting heat from the audience but soon he loose a bit, he get back to the top.
