  • You've been asking for a pond update... and here it is! It's a long video too because there was a lot more to talk about than I expected. So come hang out with me around the pond to look at the wakins and watonai (and Submarine!). I'll also show you the frogs that have been hanging out around my pond with all their thousands of tadpoles. Watch till the end for a glimpse at the patio bowl pond too, although don't get too excited. The plants look terrible lol.

Hi Jennie... your "droopy" plant looks like an impatiens plant from what I can tell.... they tend to like shady, moister areas. They aren't happy in bright sun and intense heat.... you may want to move it for it to survive. May I suggest a miniature butterfly bush--they stay small and attract butterflies etc.... Love that the frogs enjoy your pond! 😊

You need to install a camera in your yard. That is really creepy. I can't imagine any small animal would mess with that gator head. If anything it should scare them away. Since you are on CZcams and a lot of people know you I think it would probably be a good idea to install some kind of surveillance. That just seems really strange. Maybe look into getting Ring or Nest or some other general security system with cameras that you can access via your smart device.

Finally an update on the pond! As for the skimmer and small fish the screen will work but you could simply remove the weir flap and they can swim in and out. For the raccoons get a motion controlled water jet and it will scare anything away! Enjoy the frogs and wildlife in the meantime!

Hi, definitely use it as a frog pond, night vision security cameras would be great to pickup your sneaky backyard landscaper. More native plants and plants overhanging the pond throughout the bark mulch areas. Creating more deep shade around the pond should encourage frogs to use your pond even more.
The patio pond plants need full sun for at least part of the day, for potting media I’ve found success with 50/50 decomposed cow manure and potting mix. Using paper to line the pot and gravel to top off the potting media. Lillies especially need full sun and prefer minimal surface agitation/ splashing so best placed away from the waterfall.
The pond looks really good especially the hardscape.

do you have any fast growing underwater plants (anacharis, parrotsfeather, etc)? Maybe that would outcompete the string algae for nutrients. Raccoons are a massive pest, I am so thankful they have not messed with any of my tubs (fingers crossed). also, the lily will need fertilization (root tab) every 2-4 weeks if you want blooms.

A big variable as well is how its potted- what size container, what type of soil, etc and if the pond has substrate or is bare (like a plastic bin/tub) as well as stocking density. Lilies potted into the substrate of a pond/container don't require the fertilization those that in for instance a 3g plastic pot do. I have found that fertilizing my potted lilies in my bare bottom tubs every 2-4 weeks ensures good blooms.

Your Dad wearing your logo shirt is the sweetest. I agree a trail cam or night cam on the pond 'activites' would also be a fun addition to this channel. I'm glad you show your defeats as well as your triumphs. Seeing how the indoor pond is evolving 'even though the plants aren't doing well' helps me feel like I can keep going on as a fellow hobbyist. • @professorm4171
    @professorm4171 Před 6 lety +34

Yeah, don't bother putting goldfish in there. Your goldfish was probably hiding from predators in the skimmer. You can try little fish like native minnows, mollies etc...
You need floating plants or water lilies to block out the light to control the algae.

If you do really want to have goldfish in a pond, you'll have to make your pond a bit bigger and deeper, like 4 feet deep and hiding caves at the bottom of the pond. My pond was ravaged by raccoons until I figured that out.

Maybe some feeder comets. It could be a low risk addition to the pond. After all their intended "purpose" was to be fed to another animal. So a 50/50 chance on survival in the pond, is better than the almost 100% chance of being food, or dying in a crowded pet store tank.

So happy to see a pond update! I LOVE frogs and tadpoles so much! I have a 5k pond and the frogs might be my favorite thing lol. They are so darn cute and entertaining. Really stay on top of that screen if you decide to keep it because if it gets to clogged the pump could run dry. If you're not adding fish I would remove it honestly for fear of burning out the pump. Or get a bigger mesh at least. I have a negative edge skimmer on my pond so I have to deal with a similar situation. Adding a little shade to my pond has helped a lot with algae, wilty plants and temp. Sail shades would look great in your yard. Best of luck to you and keep the videos coming!

    Love your frog pond!
Suggest you plant something that will provide shade along one edge of your pond( but won't drop leaves) so that the entire water surface isn't always exposed to the sun.
Shade reduces the algal growth and keeps the water a little cooler obviously.
You are right about tadpoles being vegetarian although they will eat meat if they are hungry enough.
I have White Cloud Mountain minnows in with my tadpoles. They are compatible, don't bother each other, and the fish feed on the algae too which is an added benefit for you.

I did both. I made a larger fish pond and used some leftover liner to make a frog pond nearby. Frogs use that because its safer for the tadpoles.

    Hi Jennie!
You could build a screen canopy over the pond to filter some of the sunlight out. Or, a pergola with a screen.

Given the potential threat from Raccoons, it makes sense to keep the pond free of Goldfish. Your Goldfish are gorgeous, and I am one who loves the common "comet" Goldfish as much as their fancier variants, such as Orandas, Pearlscales, Ryikins, Moors and Butterflies. Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing this video with us.

What a beautiful bird bathing in your pond! And those frogs sound so different from the ones we have at our pond! So cool to hear the differences across the country! (I'm in WA, & of course you are in FL....😊)

I’m in Canada Wet (west) Coast and when I was a kid I would get the frog gel with the tiny eggs in it and feed it to our gold fish. Wholly crap did our fish go nuts and grew like crazy. It was awesome.

LOVE the nighttime serenade, SO miss the frogs of SW FL. Suggestion for a couple of plants for your patio bowl pond, a peace lily, pothos and a venus fly trap all like indirect sunlight. Also, you can put some of the baby mollies could be put in your outdoor pond.

I really enjoyed this pond update video. Seeing all the tad poles, and frogs was a real treat! As for your indoor pond plants..my neighbor used kitty litter for his outdoor canna lillys, that out lined parts of his pond. It worked out great in that situation. I think try to replicate the texture of the soil in plants that are thriving. By looking at your potted plants in the pond my guess is they need more soil/ litter mix. They look to be water logged, but I'm no pond plant expert, lol. I do well with my outdoor plants. Snails can do lots of damage, so they might be eating your lily pads. I use a little compost tea made of one part manure to 5 parts water, with molasses, fish sea kelp and it works wonders on growth. Everything gets big and beautiful. I put the manure in a old tshirt and tie it up like a tea bag, then add water then a sweeter like molasses, or honey. That's What Kicks off the beneficial bacteria growth, the fish emulsion and sea kelp are an added boost. After about two days, this compost tea can be used in plants. Diluted a little bc the tea is concentrated. One to five parts is a good dilution. I will reuse the teabag a couple of times before cutting it open and putting into soil or compost bin. Any kind of rich compost soil can be added to manure tea. Just make sure to keep lid on, and store it away from doorways bc it stinks. Great to use on garden plants, and the like. Thanks For Your Awesome video! I look forward to the next one.😊

I completely agree with light algae for koi. I kept alkaline water quality for the first 3 months doing 3 filter cleanings a day with 2 times a week water change, I went to a filter cleaning once a day with once a week water changes and my fish have doubled in size and energy in 1 month.

When I was younger I loved learning everything I could about marine aquatic life and I was kind of an ocean nerd...when I went camping in the rainy summers I used to go outside and and catch frogs it was fun too...until 0ne peed on my hand but I still loved catching the tiny ones...so cute... I never really looked at golf fish or other sort of fresh water fish however...but after watch ing you for some time I learned how unique gold fish really are. Espeacally after when you went to Japan now I have done a lot of research and I am planning to go to Japan after high school. I really hope I can get a fish for 1) after getting home from school I am the only one at my house and I get pretty lonely 2. Even though I live in Florida in the smack middle of it...I really don't get to go to go to beaches or lakes often where I love to see fish and try to identify the species. Anyway I am so happy and inspired with what you do^-^ I FISH you luck on life

I haven't read all the comments so I don't know if its been suggested yet, but you should install a motion detection spotlight. So if and when the raccoons come back the lights coming on should scare them off. Or at night play a radio on an AM channel so the voices make them think someone is in the area. We use the radio method in the barns on my parents farm. Hope this helps!

You need to borrow a camera trap to find out who's been having fun in your garden! I've had a camera trap for a few years and I love it 😁.
I don't know if you've experienced this in the past but frogs can be a problem for Goldfish in the mating season as they get so excited they reach a point where they aren't fussy weather they latch onto a frog or a fish anymore! Sadly this can lead to suffocated fish.
Your sister's reaction to the alligator head made me chuckle. 😊
