    Forget the negative comments, a big pond can be to much maintenance. I had a 2,000 gallon pond and spent more time cleaning/up keep then enjoying it. I made it much smaller and it's no longer a headache. That pond is the perfect size for the yard and homeowners. The wild life will discover it and make it apart of their travels. Enjoy!

    • @thesecretroman
      @thesecretroman Před 6 lety

      I think most comments are just concerned about it being too small for fish, which it looks like it is. As a wildlife pond small ponds are awesome and easy to maintain like you said :) her pond should be just fine for some small goldfish :) - if pond owners want big goldfish or koi they have to have 1000s of gallons regardless of how much of your time it takes up, otherwise its not fair on the fish, thats all.

    I think you should put Shubunkins in the pond. They are “the poor man’s koi” after all, and I think that they will be agile enough to get away from potential predators like raccoons, whereas the fatter, slower swimming goldfish might not be as lucky

    Make sure you install some turtle lights above that tub or they'll go vitamin deficient. I learnt this the hard way when mine got sick and eventually died (they did see exotic vets who gave them vitamin shots but it was all too late).

    I think you should start a Goldfish Rescue pond! The pond can house any unwanted and neglected fish who need tender love and care and space! And you could then adopt out of the pond as well.. Since the predator issue is a huge one, I wouldnt put $200 fish in there unless you have a good plan for protection.. if you did then Watonai is my fave of course (i have 3 fish watonai, wakin & shubunkin). But Ranchu pond would be adorable as well... but back to the first suggestion. Once people know they can "dump" their unwanted sad goldfish with you, then I bet you'd have it filled up in no time. And you would be giving them such a happy life. Even if it ended up being eaten by predators. At least their last days/weeks/months/years would have been AWESOME!

    Beautiful! I'm inspired to re-do my pond - I don't intend to sound mean, but I buy feeder goldfish to stock my pond - I love watching them grow into beautiful comets with lots of color variation and if a bird (heron) takes 1 or 2 I don't mind it so much. I know I've given them a better life. I've even had them spawn and grow out babies of their own and they survive overwintering here in Arkansas.

    My (sad) pond story: tired of mowing my backyard lawn every week, I dug up a hole and bought a liner for my pond. I filled it up with water by dragging an old weather-beaten water hose (leaked everywhere). Went to my local pet store and picked up some little colorful fishes and food for them as well. Also bought some waterlily plants too, so the fishes would have somewhere to hide when its sunny. Tired from all that work. I took a mid-day nap. Woke up to find out all my little fishes were gone. My elderly neighbor said he saw few birds came to the pond and was drinking the water. Unbeknownst to all, these birds have gobbled up my little fishes and drank some of my pond water to wash it down. Cried a bit inside, all night. The following morning, I went back to the pond and filled it up with dirt and put the patch of grass back on top. I resumed my mowing duties the following week. Thus, began my hatred for the birds. The End.

    My family spent an entire summer making a nice big pond in our backyard. My dad is a plant lover while I’m an animal lover so he chose the plants and I chose the fish. We all decorated and planed the lay out. We have goldfish (I don’t remember how to spell the actual name is like Shih-bump-kin), mosquito fish, and a albino catfish. We sadly couldn’t have koi because they’d eat the plants. When we first got the fish one was pregnant so we haven’t had to buy many fish since they breed regularly. We have some uninvited guests (frogs and turtles) but I’m glad that they enjoy our man made ecosystem. Sorry I went on a tangent

    For a pond that size, you would do best with about 4-5 shubunkin goldfish. I think you will love them too. These are the fancier fantails compared to comets. They are very nice and relatively weather hardy. Keep in mind, goldfish can multiply rather quickly compared to koi. You will need to commit to thinning your stock over time. Also, those turtles will climb out and hide elsewhere. I lost several because of this even though I have taller edge rocks.

      I am a county south of her and I use a net and a canopy. A hawk tried once and lost ton of feathers. None of the bigger birds have come yet. These shallow ones and their steps just make it too easy to pick out the fish. I did mine as a formal pond with it half underground and half above so none of the small critters can do anything either.

    The ponds are both beautiful! What was your approximate cost on the outside one and the inside one? So far as fish go, I would put an easy replaceable goldfish fish in the pond, bears, raccoons, and other animals that live in the south will love your fish! Maybe you want to put guppies or mollies in the pond? They reproduce really fast and can even cross breed. You would have plenty to watch and feed any wild animals that decide to go fish!

    • @flashofpink
      @flashofpink  Před 6 lety +2

      There are links to both the DIY pond kit and the patio pond in the description if you want to see the cost of them! There would of course be additional labor costs (if you're not doing it yourself) and rock costs for the outdoor pond that would vary depending on where you're located. :)

    I can tell she was little disappointed in its Size....when u try to build a pond too natural gets pricey alot of labor and rock used that takes up alot of space..i have 10ftpond made of concrete and shell around it is a retaining wall enclosure....alot more space and more adequate for koi fish..her pond is for minnows..This pond made for aesthetics more so than accommodating pond fish

    you should add shubunkin & wakin goldfish!! with calico and solid red + solid white coloration.
    they look like mini koi fish. suitable for small pond.

    Jenny sorry to say this but I think the pond is kinda small for medium to large fish. I say you should get a few guppies and Millie’s and other smaller fish. Check out Paul Cuffaros mini pond

    Something you you wont mind too much if it gets eaten. Lots of predatory birds there.

  • @patrickdeyhle2493
    @patrickdeyhle2493 Před 6 lety +5

    Just add some normal Shubunkin, they are a bit darker and the risk for them to get eaten by racoons or birds is not as big as for real bright colored ones.
    Just don‘t get fancy goldfish with long fins, short body etc. they do not swim very fast and make an easy prey

    Oh wow it looks so good!! I just wish that they would’ve used some thinner rocks on the side because there could have been quite a bit more water space for the fish + turtles in my opinion. But still. A very good job 👌👌👌
