All those shows un the early days were recorded in front of live audiences or were on live TV shows. There were often mistakes made by even the biggest stars that couldn't be corrected on a live show with no delay like we have now. People just accepted this & laughed along with whomever was performing. 😊

    Another is
    "Stormy Weather."
Another sister that sings is Frida Parton who sings hard rock.
Dollys sister Rachel is an actress. She played Dollys part in the tv series of 9 to 5. Dollys family is very talented like Loretta Lynns family. Wish l had some of their talents.

When you said “they probably grew up singing at all the family gatherings “ etc : Well, you ain’t wrong.
A *lot* of the poor mountain folks all up and down the Appalachian/ Smoky Mountains had a strong family music tradition.
Up in the isolation of those mountain towns, music was the main way to entertain themselves. Many folks sang at home, at church, at school, at family functions. If they were very lucky, sometimes others would give them a bit of money or food in exchange, but they would have sung anyway just for sheer enjoyment.
Instruments would be simple : a treasured acoustic guitar, a handcrafted mountain dulcimer, a washboard , a simple hand-drum, a fiddle or banjo - small, easily portable, and inexpensive (usually).
Many, many famous iconic country musicians came out of those poor mountain families.

Performances on "The Porter Wagoner Show" were intentionally very loose, and frequently unrehearsed (occasionally, Dolly and Porter tried to throw one-another off during their duet performances, one changing the lyrics without warning or doing something unexpected to try to get a reaction from the other), and so this isn't unusual. I suspect that the three of them picked a song that they thought would work well, and just figured out as they were performing it with little or no rehearsal. (At 3:37, Dolly says, "You can see we didn't practice enough".) It was sort of a trademark of the show.

Dolly's sister Stella had a nice career for herself some time after this mostly in Gospel and Christian music. The host is indeed Porter Wagoner for whom Dolly worked for several years and for whom she wrote I will always love you as a goodbye gift when she left the show. The older couple shown a couple times in the audience are the girls parents. I think it might have been Dolly that went up on the lyric lol.

Well let's see. In 1975 she released her 3rd album (her 1st solo endeavor). The title track was in the top 10 and got her a major record label deal. She had 3 more top 20 singles in 77-78. Another top 40 hit in 79. In addition to movie soundtracks that she wrote and sang songs for, she has released 22 albums and 28 charted singles. She has also acted in a bunch of TV shows and Broadway musical touring companies. She has also more recently done some social and consulting work, and written 3 cookbooks. Hardly a career??@@Michael-qb5hg

People always make a big deal of Dolly's clothes, hair, makeup ... but look at her duet partner, Porter Wagner! That style of jacket is known as a Nudie jacket, named for famous men's designer Nutya "Nudie" Cohn, who made these flashy clothes for many famous country stars: Hank Williams, Elvis, George Jones, Glen Campbell. Porter was reputed to own 52 of these suits, each valued at $11,000-$18,000 .... and that's without adjusting for inflation.

@@Michael-qb5hg dude… one doesn’t have to be a big star in order to have a “music career” . I have several friends who pay 100% of their living expenses from performing music, but who’ll never be majorly famous.
Besides Stella’s music career, she also featured in several Broadway touring productions and in roles on tv and in film. No, Stella wasn’t nearly as “successful” as Dolly, but that’s OK. She did just fine.

Dolly and Stella had very similar features (other than that Dolly's eyes are blue/green, and Stella's are brown), and now that they're both in their 70s, I think that Stella looks like Dolly would have looked had she not had all of the plastic surgery. They're both still beautiful, but Stella more or less still has her natural face, and Dolly would have probably looked very similar, had she decided to just age naturally.

Oh she cut it off too soon! The people they had cut to in the audience were the sister's mother Avie Lee Parton and their grandfather, Avie Lee's father the Reverend Jake Owens. Porter Wagoner introduced them after they finished singing when he walked back out on stage with them. Incidentally, when Dolly and Queen Latifah made the movie Joyful Noise together, they joked they must be Owens cousins because Queen Latifah's given name is Dana Owens.

This is typical country television of the 1960's and 70s. Not polished, rehearsed and totally clean, but beautiful and wholesome in its own right. The last example of this sort of thing I can remember on network tv was Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell sisters. Incidentally, the guy in the video is Porter Wagoner, who hosted the show this was on, I believe the Porter Wagoner Hour. He was the big star, she was the sidekick, and now, America barely remembers him.
