- This repair is a replacing the starter on a 2001 Mercruiser 4.3 Litre EFI Digital Ignition I/O. It much less than a "How too" then what is really involved in doing this job. Most of the starters are in the rear of the motor on Mercruiser whether is a v8, v6 or a straight 4 cylinder 3.0. They are all usually held in place by 2 bolts but the trick really is getting to them. And that, usually involves removal if some or all of the rear interior of the boat for access. It is virtually impossible to get to these starters with your interior in place.

Thank you sir … I’m about to tackle this job but I think I’m going to have mine rebuilt … the new ones don’t seem to last as long as the old school ones.
If you can have it rebuilt, the old ones do last longer than replacements.
Yep. I found a local guy who rebuilds, and he thought mine was a great candidate. Getting to be fewer of these types of mechanics out there though ... kinda sad.
Thank you!
Is there no ground wire connected to the starter? Thought there’d be a black sire coming from the battery terminal just like the red one
The ground is created thru the bolts screwing into the block. The ground wire is attached to the motor block.
Super job
Thank you! Cheers!
Your lucky I had to pull the whole engine to change the starter lol did you fine out what that extra screw one the back of the new strter is for?
Well, that stinks. No, never found out but the boat ran with zero issues all season.
@@bigguydiy2184 oh awesome yea found it's just a ground not needed next mission was diagnosing a no spark condition crossed my fingers wasn't the ecu in fact was just the ignition sensor the ecu for my engine is impossible to find unless you want shell out 1500 which is half of what another 5.0 would cost now I'm getting a severe flooding issue with a bad fuel regulator... 😂it never ends in one more issue away from converting to outboard
My dream boat has outboard(s). No more I/Os. Hate working on them as I get older.
