  • Today we are going to show you how to remove your old starter on your inboard boat with a Ford engine and replace it with a new Arco retrofit marine starter kit.
    *Note: We do NOT recommend using an automotive-grade starter in a marine application. Arco makes a great marine-grade starter and we supply it here at www.skidim.com
    If you have any questions regarding what's going on in this video or your application, please leave a comment below or give the Discount Inboard Marine team a call at 803-345-0996.

    Was having issues with voltage drop on the small wire causing the starter bendix not to engage the flywheel some of the time. Turns out I wired my new starter the "old" way...Re_did the the wiring per this video and all is right again! Thanks Guys!!

    Doesn't attaching the starter wire to the same post as the battery cable disable the external solenoid? Seems like he's bypassing it entirely.

    The starter you're installing looks just like the one I have installed on my Chris Craft with a 351 Cleveland. Someone told me I need to buy a marine starter but if mine looks like yours and mine is an automotive version, what would be the difference? Thanks.

    Its my understanding that the starter grounds itself via the mounting bolts. at 6:21 looks like you have another cable on there which Im assuming is ground. I bought the 70212 starter but it doesnt say anything about needing ground cable. Whats the deal???

    I have a 1992 Prostar 205 with a 351. Would that be a right or left hand rotation?

    TERRIBLE spot for the relay! Why does it seem like people who design boat engines have ZERO brains? It's all fine and dandy to work on when it's out of the boat. But what a pain in the butt place, when it's in a boat.

    • @jimships
      @jimships Před 2 lety

      You mean the starter I hope. Having the relay up and out of the water (as on a PCM) is far better than down on the starter itself buried in the hole.

    • @DetroitWrecker666
      @DetroitWrecker666 Před 2 lety

      @@jimships Nope, I meant the Relay! Ever try to reach one of those, when the engine is installed in a boat?
      Why not mount it on top of the engine the way Mercruiser does it?

    • @jimships
      @jimships Před 2 lety +1

      @@DetroitWrecker666 I see we are in agreement. I agree the relay should be top mounted...

      @@jimships I meant no disrespect to this guys channel. He seems to do fine work. I'm a boat mechanic, myself, and I see bad design after bad design, ALL the time.
      Most of the Volvo Penta designs are beyond reason.... I'm sure it looked great on paper. But when we have to service this stuff in the field, it makes for way more Labor than need be. If only someone took a minute to remember that things break. Certain things more than others.
