    Hello!
    Nice video and Good that you did a bench test,but be careful.
    This is OK to check some level of functionality of the solenoid, under a very small load of a light bulb, maybe a few 100 mA?, however it does not really prove that the solenoid is fit for purpose.
    Over many cycles over the lifetime of a boat, the main switching contacts arc, get pitted and dirty and can be really in rough shape. I just replaced both solenoids on a hydraulic trim pump with new ones. Even though both solenoids were “clicking and working” on the bench, I measured the resistance across the switching studs and this was anywhere between about 10 ohms and 150 ohms, randomly changing with each test( no not a loose connection)….just shows the nasty condition of the contacts after many years of use. Imagine the heating effect and losses in that contact due to the high resistance accelerating further deterioration.
    So whilst I think it’s OK in an emergency to use an old solenoid to get the motor started, it’s really a false economy , when you can fit a brand new one for less than $20, and know that you will have many years of reliable service .👍

      Could possibly be a grounding issue or corrosion, check you cables and battery make sure you have nice shiny copper, or do you have points or electronic ignition?

    I have 1980 470 Mercruiser and the motor turns over when you hold the key like it is started but as soon as you release the key it does not keep running. I thought it could be the solenoid but looking at the wiring diagram I dont think so. We have replaced the ignition switch. It is like key circuit is broke as soon as the momentary key switch is released. I thought maybe the solenoid was like a latch relay but now I dont believe so. Any thoughts on what it could be?

      If you replaced the ignition switch did you reverse the wires by accident?

      Well it was actually doing the same thing before we replaced the ignition switch. Found a wiring diagram on line and am thinking it could be the coil or circuit breaker. The starter is a momentary switch so after it is released it is like the electrical connection is broken.

    Thanks for the video - if my starter works on my Mercrusier then I don’t need to test the solenoid - correct?

    • @WhitehouseFarmVet
      @WhitehouseFarmVet  Před rokem +1

      Correct because if you have a bad solenoid your starter motor wouldn't work! Thank you for watching!👍😊

      @@WhitehouseFarmVet great what about the breaker red button - how to test that..?

    • @WhitehouseFarmVet
      @WhitehouseFarmVet  Před rokem +1

      @fredrikfabian9591 that's your main circuit breaker when your boat is running if you press it ,it should cease all operations it should be a 50 amp!

      Mine clicked too then I kept holding the key over & it ended up finally turning over. It was the starter & the solenoid went out right after.
