- A clever love letter to the genre in all its many forms, today's film predates Wes Craven’s mid-90s one-two punch of “New Nightmare” and “Scream” as what you might call a “post-modern” horror movie. One that affectionately pays homage to horror cinema and expects its audience to be savvy to what it’s doing. We're diving into the wonderfully colorful world of 1991's Popcorn.

"Popcorn, buy a bag, go home in a box". What a great tagline that was. Agreed Villard (RIP) did a bang up job, really talented and if you know, he was in many many movies and tv shows.
I just commented that,I should’ve read the other ones first and see you did
Between the cover and this tagline, this movie stayed with me forever since it was front and center at the local video store.
The tagline stuck with me so much I used it for an item description in Team Fortress 2.
Thankfully my mom rented this and we watched it when I was a kid. So glad that it's starting the get the attention it deserves in the recent years. More people were familiar with the vhs cover than the actual movie when I would bring it up in 90s horror discussions.
Helluva damn great cover for sure. A perfect movie poster. 👌💯🔥...hell even worthy of being inked somewhere
I remember when I was a little kid, my family had HBO, and Popcorn was on the cover of the little programming guide that they would send you in the mail each month. It really creeped me out, and made me really want to watch it.
As a kid it was on HBO like every day lol and I would watch it every time.
Another example that there were great horror movies in the 1990s. That poster was really eye catching.
90s horror deserves more recognition.
It certainly catches the Eye.
"Buy A Bag, Go Home In A Box". Loved this one. RIP Tom Villard always!
Top 5 tagline in horror history.
I went to the movie theater to watch this & loved it & still love it till this day.
I share the sentiment that I wish movies were more of a wall to wall experience. It would be awesome.
Finally watched "Matinee" (1993) and NEXT on THAT list is "Popcorn" (1991), I've been wanting to watch this movie for a long time.
Thanks for the Video 😀
Anyone else remember the promos? Usually had a football player (can't tell you who at the time) and a sports announcer would ask them after the end of a game, "Now that you won the Superbowl what are you going to do next?!" Player- "I'm going to see Popcorn!"
found this movie on shudder and fell in love with it! it totally needs more recognition.
The vhs box for this haunted me as a child because the woman on the front looked like my aunt. Then I finally saw the movie and adored it. Tom Villard gave a criminally underrated haunting, tragic and dramatic performance. RIP
Rented it constantly when I was a kid. Own the Blu-ray. Love this movie.
I so remember this. But like all the other forgotten gems I'll have to get it on Blu Ray now!
Let's not forget "Fade To Black" with Dennis Christopher, another masterpiece. I got to work with Alan Ormsby at our film school where he taught a Horror Screenwriting Class. The product of the class was actually taken and made into a feature. Ormsby ROCKS. I miss hardcore horror movie marathons, love William Castle and am so grateful for this tribute.
I saw Popcorn when it came out back in 91. The Poster itself made me want to see it. It's one of My favorites and I've watched it many times this year alone. On Bloody Disgusting T.V. and Shudder.
Man that thumbnail brought back memories.
I never saw this movie, but I liked the poster so much that I put the it up on my wall.
Guess it's time to finally watch the movie. 😁
This used to be viewable on CZcams , or at least it was a few months ago. Worth a watch for horror fans.
When I was around 8 yrs. the local video store was a short walking distance from my house . I found the poster for this movie in the trash outback . It hung on my wall for a couple years before I ever got a chance to see it and I've loved it ever since.
Fantastic movie. Extremely underrated.
When I was in highschool in the late 90s the University of Kansas student union would do midnight movies, double and triple features. They did House on a Haunted Hill (original), and showed it in "Emergo-vision". They put stuff under the seat, threw stuff to imitate broken glass. For the finale the lowered a skeleton with a spotlight on it. The rope broke, skeleton down. That is a great memory. Thanks for the video
I was beginning to feel like I was the only person who remembers this movie.
Seriously? Right 🙄 it’s Been a cult classic since at least the late 90s!
First horror movie I owned on VHS. Watched it many times. Got it back when it was a new release. I love Bob Clark and had no idea that Popcorn had a connection to that sweet spot of 70's horror.
Glad Jill was added to the cast she is so lovable. I do wish Popcorn was available to buy on digital.
I remember watching this crazy film a long time ago on VHS and never knew what it was about, till I learned it's about a deranged serial killer picking off teens in a movie theater, in a plot very similar to SCREAM.
I think this was one of those movies that I remember from the horror section of the video store in a local supermarket. Because of that store, I tracked down ‘Basketcase’ and ‘Monkeyshines’ within the last year.
That place still exists? Not the supermarket but that section I mean
@@michaelblaine6494, no to both of those. That store, after a name change, closed in 05 or 06, maybe, with the video store closing a year or two before. I’m 38 and I remember this being on the shelf in the early 90’s.
Not only did I see 'Popcorn', but I saw this movie in theaters when it first came out.
This was such a fun and entertaining film! Jill Schoelen is always worth watching!
Great movie!! I saw it in the theater with my mom when I was 11. Glad that it is finally getting recognition.
I hate it when you guys drop a new “Movie You Never Saw” episode because I’m always like, “But I DID see this one!” 🤣🤣 Haven’t thought about “Popcorn” in YEARS. Thanks for uploading this one. 👍🏾👍🏾
Dude same here, they’re wrong every time🤣👍
The first time I watched this flick I was ten years old (I am now thirty-six) and had a moderate fever. I honestly thought that I hallucinated most of the movie. So after my fever broke and I recovered I gave Popcorn another watch. To my surprise the movie wasn't a weird fever dream, it was just weird (and wonderful)!
Jill Schoelen was amazing in 1989's Phantom of the Opera starring Robert Englund. It's certainly a masterpiece and Englund's most underrated work out of Freddy. Both are a delight in it and the soundtrack is amazing. You guys should check it out sometime.
She was also great in 'The Stepfather' (the original) & 'When A Stranger Calls Back'
This movie had me in stitches because I remember watching this movie over 30 years ago back on Cinemax because I remember watching all of these people at a MovieHouse laughing and carrying on while the theater’s employees were using special effects in the auditorium which features electro shocks in the seats causing the audiences to jump up to artificial odors stinking up the place in which people had to wear clothespins on their noses to avoid the smells in the auditorium there but this movie had me in stitches as a young adult back then .
I loved this movie. This and Mirror, Mirror (1991)
Just watched this thanks to your recent video. Truly awesome throwback to an era of fun theaters and simpler times. Thanks for re-introducing us to Popcorn!
Amazing! Thank you for this stellar retrospective!
I got to meet Jill Schoelen earlier this year when I went to my first horror convention. I was so surprised to find out that this movie was given the Joe Bob treatment when it was shown on The Last Drive-in.
I remember this when I was a kid. I love and miss 80's early 90's horror so damn much
I still have this masterpiece in VHS that I bought from the last video store in my town.
I have fond memories of seeing this when I was somewhere between 8-11 on Cinemax or HBO late at night. I liked that it was set in a movie theater since it was a first for me. I had already seen countless movies set in a camp or in the suburbs. This was something different.
As the channels went into the 90s they played it less and less often till it disappeared completely. For many years I would think about it now and then but only recently I purchased the Blu Ray and watch it about once a year.
The "Kiss your What?" scene had me rolling the first time I watched it. Ah, the 90's. Simpler times with simpler minds.. lol
I have this on VHS. Former rental tape. Was a surprise when I watched it.
I recently started to remember this movie but didnt know what it was called! So i looked up "People under the stairs" cast to find Fool's sister because i remembered she was in it! I need to watch this again. I was literally kid.
I am glad to see this movie get some love! Its a great cast to boot!
I ALWAYS remember seeing the box art for this film at rental stores back in the day
Ahh! Nice! I seriously thought that Toby and his faces was some high school era fever dream because I couldn't remember the name of this movie and never saw it again. It was real!
Never saw it, but I mos def remember that artwork...
LOVE this one!!! ❤️🍿❤️
One of my most favorites from the 90's!!! 🤩🍿🎥🥰✨🌟✨💥 That's all...I could go on and on ...🥰😍
Actually, when I was a kid here in Brazil there was a tv channel that did "Horror Movies" sessions at midnight and Popcorn was a recurring one. I thunk it was one the first slashers I ever saw and I used to love it! Should be fun to revisit now, 30 years later, it´s definetely going on my list!
Saw this and Anguish (another brilliant thriller) in my teens on the same day, early 90s. What a mind blowing double feature lol
I absolutely love this movie! I first saw it on cable when it first came to the premium channels. It really does hold up well and I pull out the DVD from time to time. Plus the tag line... Perfection
Aw man. Thanks for the video. I love silly films like this and I’m surprised I never heard of Popcorn until today. Thanks again!
I enjoyed this film when I first saw it in the 90s and would often rent it from the video store 📼. A very underrated meta horror film.
I passed up renting this hundreds of times.... I guess I should have!
Oh my God, I have GOT to watch this movie! I had heard of it, but didn't realize it was this much of a fun love letter to old movies. And I agree with your appreciatiation for Matinee, a fantastic Joe Dante movie.
I love Popcorn. And the movie isn't bad, either. Seriously though, I've been a fan since I got to see it in theaters in 91. I crushed on Jill Schoelen from Phantom Of The Opera with Robert Englund. Tom Villard was an immense talent. My other favorite film with him is as Bobcat Goldthwaite's twin brother in One Crazy Summer. Btw, if Vincent Price was the 50s Ray Walston, then today's might be Englund.
I saw this in the theater in 1991. I remember people hating it due to how it was marketed (watch the theatrical trailer to get an idea). I recently watched it as an adult and found an appreciation for it.
I have no clue when I first saw this movie. But I know for sure that I forced my friends to rent it during a sleepover when we were in high school in the late 90's. I was super into it, my friends not so much. Thankfully, I still have those friends, and I always think back on that memory. AND on the fact that it starred the "Flesh all a-mesh" guy from My Girl. LOL!
I remember renting this on vhs when I was 6 and I’ve loved it ever since I bought the steel book edition as soon S it came out, Toby is an underrated villain, it’s hRd not to feel sorry for him🖤, I love it plot holes and all🙌😍
I haven’t seen this? I definitely have. Not only do I have it on Blu Ray, I saw it in the theater
space is not to limited. as someone who operated theater for 23 years I can tell you how creepy these places get after dark and amount of places the public does not think about for horror. I have a theater set feature coming in 23 and another written
Great video as always! I love this movie!!!!
Just watched it for the first time this year and its great.
Classic in my household along with Frankenhooker and Basket Case
One of my favorites!
Thank you love this 90s movie 🎥.
As a kid I loved this movie. I think it should be remade today.
One of the few movies that could actually benefit from an update
@@michaelblaine6494 totally agree
Thank you for giving a shoutout to Matinee, what an underrated gem 🖤
Awesome movie and very aesthetically pleasing. It feels like it was tailor made for horror fans. It's cool seeing an 80s era movie (I know it came out in 91 buts it's an 80s movie) with a tongue in cheek reverence for a previous era.
Now that you won the big game! What are you gonna do! I am gonna see POPCORN!
I LOVE this movie! A true underrated classic!
I love this movie. I used to catch it on HBO as a kid. Though for years after I kept getting this movie confused with WaxWork for some reason. I kept telling people about it, but I kept saying that Zach Galligan was a villain. lol Though that's a fun "What if?" idea I know that my heart was in the right place trying to tell people about this under appreciated flick.
I first heard of this film when I found the dvd in a pound shop one Halloween. It's a good but underrated film.
I definitely saw this. Used to have it on vhs one of my faves
Wow. I remember watching this as a kid with my friends and figuring it wouldn’t be that great, man was I wrong. Such a great film!
Oh I saw this! My mom took me to see at the Chalmette 9 Cinemas when this came out!
Awesome vid just recently watched this Good Movie
Saw it plenty of times on Prism,a local Philadelphia cable channel tied into the Spectrum I think. It later became Starz but anyway this used to be on all the time in the summer of 1992 and I forgot all about it. I gotta go watch it again. (Stop telling me I haven’t seen movies that I’ve seen, you’re wrong every time dammit🤪jk,love the channel)
I never saw this because our video store's VHS copy was literally too dark and worn to see anything! Never caught it on tv either. In fact, this past October I looked it up, wondering if it was real or a childhood fever dream. Now I'm going to have to give it another go.
Absolutely love this film🙂🤟🤟
I never saw this movie but i was suppose to this Halloween but i completely forgot, thanks for the reminder.
I love this movie and it’s in Shudder right now
Such a great movie!
You forgot about "The Final Girls" from (2015) it was a bloody brilliant horror movie...
This was a random rental one summer it was a cool watch. I wanted the shock clock so bad.
I still think a remake of 1977's Drive In Massacre would 1) improve on the original 2) rekindle nostalgia 3) cost very little considering the original is public domain.
I need to get a DVD version of the movie. Way back I did have a vhs copy, but that has been lost to time.
Popcorn is great. Jill Schoelen is underrated as a scream queen
Great little movie highly underrated
“Demons” is my favorite horror film set at the cinema. “Popcorn” isn’t bad, though.
Love to see this in 4K
Fun movie, just saw it this year.
This film is awesome
Hopefully they make In Search of Darkness '90s edition and they mention this movie!
Everyone shits on this and Cutting Class, but I love them both. Jill is adorable.
Love it when I see suggestions I make get made. Lol I know it’s not because of me but still. Makes me feel special 😂😂😂
I've never heard of it I'll have to check it out
I had no idea about this film, and to return the favor, let me introduce you to: Angustia, a 1987 horror spanish film which takes place in the cinema. Thanx!!!
Is there a way to search for videos just buy this narrator? He is so, so damn good and appears very infrequently lately
Don't tell me what I never saw. Hell, I even remember seeing a trailer for this in the theater. Then it played regularly on Saturday afternoons on TNT or TBS or something.
