  • A few weeks ago I was tasked with converting a 2022 G06 X6M driver seat into a rolling office chair for a local charity auction. I was able to meet the short timeline and the seat came out great!
    In this video:
    - The seat features are briefly discussed
    - The seat is disassembled and the side airbag deployed
    - The electricals for power movement from an AC/DC converter are determined
    - Brent @hyperformance builds a fantastic seat frame!
    - The seat base is painted and the seat fully assembled.

    I LOVE IT !!! That is a beautiful seat........where did you get it? I was thinking of doing this with a Peterbilt 18 wheeler seat ...... I need something with arm rest......this will make a great computer desk chair.

    Would love to do this. Wonder if anyone had a recommendation on car model and year for bucket seats.

    Nice! But the only issue is you can’t adjust the height like most office/gaming chairs.

    We’re you able to find a way for the seat control module to stay awake while the power is on? Or ventilation on the seat? Attempting the same project on a 2018 7 series seat at the moment but so far only have the power adjustments working. I am able to wake the seat module consistently for 3 minutes if I momentarily tap 12v to one of the yellow/brown wires. Currently looking into the feasibility of massage as well, but unlikely since massage type is adjusted through the infotainment system on these cars.

      I've reached out to a colleague at bmw in Munich to see if he can put me into contact with someone in the electrical group. But so far I haven't been able to keep it awake and I haven't had time to get back to it to work on the heat and ventilation.

    why not with shock absorber

    Im attempting this, using some CAN boards and arduino. Ive got my seat to stay awake using the actual ignition on message, but I recorded the actual CAN messages in the car when i turn the seat heating on. Replayed them to my seat and the heating didn’t work. Really confused now I don’t know what else I could try if im replaying all the messages and it still doesn’t work. Did you get anywhere with yours?

      Well, it sounds like you're much more computer savvy than I am. I would have no idea where to start with the programming side to mimic the CAN signals coming out of the car...plus I don't have the car to try to pull the data, only the seat. But no, I have not had a chance to get back on the seat project. Only in the last few weeks have I been trying to track down a wire diagram for the seat and have bought some supplies to convert it from running on an AC/ DC converter, to running on 18v Ryobi batteries so it's not tied to a cord.
      I would be really interested in at least being able to keep the control module awake if you could share. As for the seat heating, I was planning to locate the wires and add a separate relay circuit and switch (like I did in a Lincoln Continental seat project) and bypass the control module completely. Similarly, for seat ventilation I'm planning to bypass the controller and directly wire the blower motors to a computer PCI fan speed controller. This worked well in the Lincoln seat project.

      @@ironicallyengineered2486 I could help with that as I have access to bmw diagnostic software called ISTA, ill look for some diagrams hopefully it has them, but for the awake message Im not sure what it could be hopefully bmw have kept it the same from 2010 (e90 m3 time) to the more modern x6M years

    Have you been able to run cooling on that seat?

    • @ironicallyengineered2486
      @ironicallyengineered2486  Před rokem +5

      Unfortunately not. I've got an old vw torn apart at the moment. Hopefully get back to the seat later this summer.
      In general, I expect it to work the same way my Lincoln continental seats ventilation works. Check out those videos and it might give you a good idea.

    It looks like the legs are angled out a bit maybe for stability? Or is that an illusion?

    • @ironicallyengineered2486
      @ironicallyengineered2486  Před 9 měsíci

      Yes, the legs are canted out a few degrees for aesthetics.
      The base frame and seat are heavy and wide enough that stability should not be a concern.

    What is the spac of AC/DC convertor

    • @ironicallyengineered2486
      @ironicallyengineered2486  Před rokem

      It's just a basic 30 amp AC/DC converter from amazon. The seat motors pull about 4 Amp each under load and seat heaters about 5amp.

    Was no CanBus emulator necessary to get the seat running? do you still have the files from the 3d scan? Thx

      If your seat has the control module still under the seat you "should" be good to go with only power on the appropriate pins. On this seat, there was one large yellow plug under the seat. I removed the twisted pairs of wires (safety items...airbag, seat belt). I first tried putting (-) power to the largest brown wire and (+) power to the largest red/ yellow stripe wire with my power supply. I could see it was drawing a little power but nothing was functioning. I randomly tried adding (+) power to the smaller gage red/ yellow stripe wire at the same time as the larger one and the seat began functioning. With that, all of the functions controlled from the switch cluster on the seat worked.
      If you have massage, heat and cooling, those will have to be controlled by some external source. I'm working on getting the heat and cooling working on mine and will make a video but it might be a few months before I have time.
      Note: Without signals coming from the BCM, the seat controller will go to sleep after a minute or so of no movements. You have to unplug the seat and plug it back in to get it to wake up.
      Note2: I would highly recommend removing the side airbag.
      Sorry, I don't have the 3d files. Hope that helps.

    awesome. i just bought a whole set from an mitsubishi outlander, but i'm not going to do anything with the electric seat, only the back seats and the passenger seat, which has manual adjustments. this seems like too much work and investment for me.

      Hmmm, well I haven't figured out all the electrical stuff yet. So it's not a fully working seat.
      I would imagine shipping would be tremendously expensive from the USA for one of these.

      I hope that the author won't mind but you may get one of those fully functioning and with new, separate controllers that work in cooperation with CAN - check Power Seats in google or one of my last videos as there are links in the description. @Ironically Engineered, I'm myself associated with that brand so if it would bother you, just please remove my comment. I use one of those for years now and they are amazing! There have been deliveries to UAE and Qatar in the Middle East so far. Cheers.
