How to Build: Bucket Car Seat Office/Desk Chair

- Today I'm going to pick a bucket seat from my collection and remove all the electronics and turn it into an office chair for my desk. I found the base on the curb, but you can get replacement bases on ebay or amazon if you don't have one already. These instructions are for the leather bucket seat I used, which is from a 1999 C5 Corvette- standard, not sport.

Previously I had made one but it was way too high so I made the base with wood, and so make sure the seat rails isn't so high from where you sit, this is one of the funnest builds for any car guy like me
That last comment about the chair being more comfortable than any office chair is what I came here to hear. Thanks bud...👍
This is awesome!! I’m a college student who lives a good diy & I haven’t been able to find a cool cheap office chair anywhere in Alaska...... now I’m gonna make it!!! Thanks

I've been looking for a comfortable office chair for ages and kinda given up.
So I just had this idea of using a car chair and thought I'd look it up.
Thanks for the video, it's given me some ideas!
Damn id give you 200 for that for sure looks hella good wish i could find shit this cheap and make something out of it
The best welding advice I received was to buy a cheap flux-core wire welder. I got all wrapped up in which one to purchase but a friend said that (since I only do small projects from time to time) an expensive welder would be a waste of money. He was correct. I bought a cheap one from harbor freight (less than 100.00) and I have used it 3 times. It's perfect.
I have about $400 in mine, including the gas, but it paid for it self on the first bodywork job I did. A welder is always a great long term investment!
Great idea ! Need do do something similar, because all office chair are subpar.
Great video mate.
Yooo this is awesome!
Cool video. I got a lot of ideas, thanx
wow, nice. thanks , great video . good info.
Awesome channel thank you
Planning to use a similar integra seat
Great idea🎉😊😊😊
just got a free bmw seat on craigslist so I am watching a ton of videos on how to put it on my office chair legs thanks
Remember when Homer Simpson did this but he used an aircraft chair instead? Hahaha he had no idea about that ejection seat.
Haha time to find some early 90s 4Runner seats lol
Great!
Awesom - Il do it
I have the front seats out of my first car still (1988 Ford Thunderbird turbo coupe) so I wanna do this to them
If they're in good condition, they might be worth a lot of $$.
@@6thGearGarage they could be but they're worth more than me than selling them I have a bunch of parts off that car like the front nose that I'm going to hang up on the wall of my future garage whenever that happens lol
@@chriscole9621 Now that would look awesome!

Lol I need that Teg seat for my build! I've the bracket to complete it too. Knowing my luck, it's already been used or sold lol
I have it in storage, aka my retirement fund. The cloth was too nice to use for anything like an office chair. I really don't want to ship it, but if you're local I'd consider selling it.
The mini also doesn't have the automated rail system an height controls. It's all manual . So one less thing to worry about
Man you got lucky on that chair, some car seats needs major modifications. I took a passenger car seat that was in excellent condition from a 94 eagle summit, and it was not a simple job. I did like you and used the base from a old office chair that I couldn't stand to sit in anymore, along with the arm rest and modified that car seat for it. Too many details to mention, but it took a lot of work and figuring out to make it not only look right but also perform like a chair should and I don't have a welder. From the base to the arm rest, to the height adjustment, it all had to be reworked to make everything fit without being entirely too high off the ground. I wanted and needed full height adjustment just like the original chair had... and what a pain in the ass to get right for this seat. I got it done and it's nice to sit in, including the lumbar support I added behind the original fabric. I assure it, I probably won't ever do this again.
Yeah it was nice to pick from a few different seats and use the easiest one. The lumbar support is a nice addition 👍
@@6thGearGarage if I had other choices like you did I would have chosen something different, but this seat was free out of an old car I had sitting around for years. Seat wasn't used much and wasn't even broke in. I added the lumbar support because it actually needed it, without it I couldn't sit in this seat for no more than a few minutes. At my age, mid 50's, comfort is getting more valuable by the year... Lol.
TBH, I probably would have removed those cross bars you welded the base to, and bolted a piece of black-painted wood to the aluminum frame that the bars are bolted to, then bolted the chair base to that. But, just welding it like that was quicker and easier.
That’s a really good idea, I should have done it that way
I would have left the electronic controls on there and connect them to a DC converter and that to a wall plug so you can have electronic controls on your desk chair. That would be epic
@@wesselschulte768 That's exactly what I'm wanting to do. I have a pretty heavy duty and slimline portable Laptop charger that I'm wanting to mount to the bottom of the chair so that the power functionality is still there.
Can you do it the other way around? Make an office into a car seat?
haha now that I want to see!
I have passenger side seat from my first mini Cooper s. 2008 leather never looked so new haha, also I still have the butt warmer element under the seat. trying to figure if I can just wire the butt warmer to a battery dedicated for the warmer then to a toggle switch .
Awesome idea!
Nice seat! I'm go a little crazy here... 5 dollars for it! Thats a dar got return of your investment! Deal? I live a little far.. Brazil... we split shipping then... 😁❤ please?
Algo interesting is that when I had visualised this Project in my head thats the exact chair that crossed my mind! Buy no luck finding any used ones here. Unfortunatly vetts are not popular here.
Once again loved to see it come to life!
Ola! I'm looking at making something similar. You could use a VW seat. That is about as sport car that I've seen in Brazil.
I have a mint 99 4Runner passenger seat chilling in plastic in the attic...
was the reclining function manual? I’m considering doing something similar but finding a fully manual seat that’s lightly worn yet comfortable seems to be a challenge
Yeah, the reclining was manual. I lucked out, this seat ended up being perfect for this.
I also must had to say...
I had watched many car seat videos...
analyzed many computer chairs on display centers,
none comforts me than the car seats/chairs....
not enough people do this. There are probably thousands of seats just going into dumps and landfills. I have a couple car seats I got for free and my last office chair is destoyed but the base is perfectly usable. I am trying to find someone who can weld and maybe they won't charge me an arm and a leg. Or maybe they will accept the second seat as payment, I only need one after all.
what kind of auction and where can I find auctions like that? Thanks. neat vid.
It was actually an ebay auction, local pick up only with no shipping. A racing team in Canton, OH was cleaning out their warehouse. I was the only one in the area interested, because I got a lot of good deals.
i wonder if you could use something like jb weld if you don't have a welder
I wouldn’t trust jb weld here because there isn’t a lot of contact surface area.
Bro could you make one video on turning a W222 Mercedes S class chair into an office chair?
I would, but I don't have the W222 seat.
Where did you get these seats? I assume auctions- if so, how do you find these auctions?
Ian McPherson most of them are from cars I’ve parted out over the years. The cheap corvette seat I got years ago when I found a racing team clearing old parts from their warehouse.
@Ian McPherson check out Facebook market place
Someone was handing out a mint condition, Ford thunderbird seat for free just 10 minutes away from me
Is there a way to do this with out welding got an old nismo seat i wanna do this to
Bryan Apolonio it really depends on the design of the seat. I’d pull the rails off and see what’s left to attach the base to.
Elektrik mekanizmasını hiç sökmeseydin, akü için bir bölüm oluşturabilirdin. Altına sadece kafes sistemi yapmak daha mantıklı olabilirdi.
what if thiers not a welder within miles ? can you use alien tape?
I haven't heard of alien tape, but I think welding might be the only way to go, unless there are some kind of metal fasteners you can use.
Office and gaming chairs suck big time, making something out of a car seat is an idea I've had for years. I probably will, but I don't want a seat from a dismantling body shop, who knows who died on that car seat during an accident, I'd buy a new one. Or take one from my car :))))
I never thought about that lol. This seat actually came from a racing team who replaced them with aftermarket seats, so hopefully no deaths or "stains" in the short time it was used :)
I'm lazy i would of just C clamped it done.
lastly....
I had watched many car seat alter videos...
yours was much logical and sensible...
eager...
examine...
executed...
How do I do the opposite?
Put an office chair in a car? Drill holes in the floor and get crafty with some U-bolts and you've got budget captains chairs!
@@6thGearGarage thank you! I'm about to be living off grid with my dog on the passenger. I wanted to set up like a very comfortable passenger side for her, but I need to be able to sit to drive. 😅 I swear I do too much for my dog sometimes.
@@IixiXOuOXixiI On second thought, I wouldn't consider it to be very safe. Not to mention the chair might swivel while going up hills or turning unless there is a way to lock it.
@@6thGearGarage Yeah, I was just going to keep the seat part, not the part that makes it swivel. I'll have my uncle helping with work, I want to be able to have storage upfront too. I have a two seater reg. cab with a short (6ft) bed. I'm going to need as much storage as possible living on the road.
i dont have a welder i bet spider webs of heavy duty zip ties would make this work
Next time drill the pins out, ultimately thanks!
Good tip!
