DIY: How To Make an Office/Gaming Chair From a Car Seat (The Best Office Chair Ever!)

  • See how to make a cool office/gaming chair from a car seat. Ideal for computer work or playing games.
    In this video you will see how to convert a car seat into an office chair.
    I always wanted a good office chair to edit my videos. But office chairs can be expensive if you want some extra adjustments and comfort which comes in handy when editing videos for a long time.
    I was looking at car ads when I noticed that someone was selling a wrecked 2015 Volkswagen Golf in parts. I immediately called and bought a co-driver seat for 100 euros. You could also get the seats at a local car junkyard. I decided to convert this car seat in my office chair.
    Car seats are very comfortable and highly adjustable. This seat had height, tilt and lumbar support adjustment.
    STEP BY STEP HOW-TO INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING THIS CHAIR: www.instructables.com/id/Conv...
    If you like what I do, and you would like more of it, you can buy me a coffee which helps me stay awake while editing the videos :)
    www.buymeacoffee.com/JTMakesIt
    IMPORTANT!!!
    The seat also has built-in airbag. If your seat has airbag built in - the yellow connector below the seat is usually for pyrotechnics like the airbag and the little flag on the backrest on the outboard side also informs you of the airbag inside.
    You should take the seat to a professional to remove the airbag. The
    airbag can deploy just from static electricity. And the airbag is like a big bomb. You don't want that to blow up in your office. Take the seat to a professional and they will happily remove the airbag.
    When you have the airbag removed, fill the gap with a hard piece of foam, so that the sidebolster of the backrest doesn't get too soft there.
    Then I got an old broken office chair for free, from which I salvaged the base mechanism and wheels.
    Then it was only needed to weld a bracket which would join car seat and office chair base together. Plus some minor modifications in standard DIY fashion.
    At the end I got a fairly inexpensive but mighty good office seat. We could call it the best in its class :) Car seats are very sturdy and durable and very comfortable comparing to office chairs in this range.

    How much would you sell that base for? I think its very cool that you have a step by step guide at instructables and you also have this video, but not many people have the power tools or experience to do the job, but if the only thing necessary is just assembling it and finding a compatible car chair, then that is something most people would be able to do.

    So just curious as I was kicking this around as well: Did you need to construct a base like that or could I just essentially attach the base of my office chair to the bottom of the car seat? Also could you manufacture a base for me and I will compensate?

    • @JTMakesIt
      @JTMakesIt  Před 17 dny

      Hi, I over-complicated it a bit, because I wanted to make it a bit lower. You will need some sort of an adapter plate between the base and the chair. It can be as simple as a wooden board.
      Sorry I don't take orders to make it. Maybe some local workshop could do it for you. It would be easier and faster.

    Did the seat have an airbag? It's from a 2015 car so i assume it does and you didn't mention if you removed it or not. Those things are quite powerful when they blow up so if anyone does this at home remember to remove any active airbags

    • @JTMakesIt

    What if it had Heated Seats Can you hook something up for that?

    • @JTMakesIt
      @JTMakesIt  Před 4 lety +5

      Yes of course. You could buy a AC/DC 12V power supply and hook it up to the heater and it should work. The heater should have a wires under the seat. They should be easy to identify. Only downside would be that you would have a cable hanging from below the seat. The battery would not be a good option because the heating can draw a lot of current and the battery would get empty soon.
      Since my seat is a passenger seat it also has a sensor which detects that someone is sitting on the seat (to beep the seatbelt alarm).I will use that in the future to turn on my computer or something :)

    • @henrybutterworth5116
      @henrybutterworth5116 Před 3 lety

      The heater needs to be thermostatically controlled for it to be safe. I don’t think you can just wire up the heating element to power - that will probably set the chair on fire or blow a thermal fuse. Cars have seat heater controllers and there are temperature sensors. Need to work out how to use a proper heater controller.

    I picked up an nice seat from a wrecked Toyota Corolla S for $25
    I'm going to use it for DCS/Elite Dangerous/Star Citizen
    As such i'm gonna skip the office chair base.
    I don't need it to spin or tilt... the car seat already has a sturdy reclining mechanism built in, and the built in sliding mechanism will give enough clearance to get in and out of my 'cockpit'
    All I need is a stationary base that gets the seat up to a manageable height for an old fart like me to climb in and out of.
    I figured why spend 500-1000 $ for a 'gaming chair' that won't hold up more than a year when there's MILLIONS of incredibly sturdy seats being crushed along with their wrecked cars... RECYCLE BABY!
    Also, since no one gives a crap about the low end car seats, they cost next to nothing if you are willing to go wrench it out of the car yourself.
    I am curious though... while I was back in the scrapyard, there were two Cadillac CTS sitting there with leather seats... I wonder if I can talk my scrap guy out of one of those for a reasonable price...
    It would be dope AF zooming around in a P-51, the 'Cadillac of the Skies', in an actual Cadillac seat
    PRO TIP:
    If you go get one from a scrapyard, try to source them from cars that still have their windows and doors rolled up and closed..... while I was out in the yard, I noted a number of feral cats crawling in and out of the opened vehicles.
    Don't want to get your prize home to find it reeks of cat/dog urine.

    Personally, I just wanna know how you managed to dismantle the seat plate mechanism so that I can swap one seat plate with another and not have to drill new bolt stand offs for the much larger plate into my chair. I'm basically trying to fix an office chair whose mechanism broke at the bottom where it connects to the base And I found a gaming chair which was demolished at the side of the road. It's stance is much different than my office chair though. Ooof. Oddly enough all the components of the seat plate still line up properly just the mounting point to the seat are different! So if I could swap the plates that connect to the seat my problem would be solved! But I don't see a way to dismantle these things. i.imgur.com/CqrsylW.jpg
