How to Prep and Paint the Underside of a Truck Cab
While I have the cab of this 1980 Toyota Pickup removed off of the rusty frame, now is the ideal time to remove all rust, clean, prime, paint and undercoat the underside of the cab. In the next video, Mikey@theshopspot9053 and I will be installing the cab onto the restored southern frame.

    I had a worse situation. The bolt was stripped to hell. The brake line was broken so I cut it to get a better grip on the bolt, and I stripped it even further. It was pretty much completely rounded at this point. Luckily, I was able to get a perfect fit with a vice grip to get that sucker off

    Don't buy any USED car from the rust belt if you value your money! If they made the pin in the latch handle out of stainless steel, NOBODY WOULD HAVE THIS PROBLEM with this handle. Poor engineering, the replacement part should have been upgraded.

    I’ve never thought to just run the reverse wire into the plug…how does that work? How much wire did you expose?

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage Před 10 hodinami

      I just stuck the end of the wire right into the terminal of the plug. It's a much less invasive method than cutting/splicing into the factory wiring. There was already a little bit of the insulation stripped from the end of the wire from the manufacturer, and that was just enough.

U should fill in the crack only. the foam end up cover the whole area which is very unnecessary Creating more work for yourself. looks horrible. U might as well spray the whole dash. With proper preparations and the right glue the vinyl wrap would have been cleaner and faster. Final note . ebay would have been a better options lmao

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage Před 2 dny

      Yep, you have to also remove the surrounding foam to take out the crowning for a flat surface in the end. If you watch the video, the whole dash was sprayed. My viewers asked me to try to repair it this way so here it is. I already did a repair with vinyl wrap here: czcams.com/video/XB9GKLRHYNM/video.html and I agree, that is the better way. Old dashboards have been out of production for 30+ years, ebay isn't much help there.

    As a welder, clean your metal more, and do longer beads. When you stop and start like that your having to re create a puddle adding more and more heat than you need to make, also if your not experienced your starts may not have as much penetration so doing longer beads will let you keep a deeper penetrating weld going.

    I have a question when removing the two bolts from the wheel hub (still learning part names) and the strut my strut forces down and I can't bring it back up would I need a specific tool or am I doing something wrong? When I watch your video it doesn't force down at all

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage Před 4 dny

      Did you remove the nut on the center at the top of the strut assembly top hat? If so that means the strut is no longer held together and compressing the spring, meaning the spring force is pushing the suspension down with a lot of force. This is a very dangerous situation because the spring could cause major damage to objects or people because of the extreme pressure it has on it. I'd have a professional mechanic bring spring compressors at this point instead of attempting to go further yourself.

    BEWARE CZcamsrs of these cheap cleaning lasers! (not ALL Chinese lasers are bad, but do your homework)...most of these thing are 'toys" 1. Avoid anything with a Raycus laser diode (they are getting better, but there is a reason why they are so cheap...most won't last a year...) 2. Don't get a unit that cleans AND welds (they do neither well) 3. Get a unit with USA tech support (from a dealer....avoid Amazon/Alibaba, or you WILL be sorry) 4. Get a unit that has a chiller for the diode (for a continuous wave laser like the one in this video)...pulse wave up to 300w is ok without 5. Make sure the head has an air blade (keeps the protective lenses cleaner much longer/ extends optics life) 6. Continuous Wave lasers are usually the way to go (unless doing thin material/ Aluminum / heat treat scale)....then go to a pulse laser 7. Don't use they eyewear that comes with the laser cleaner (they are always OD 5...should be at least OD 7+ @ 1.0 - 1.1 nm range wavelength) 8. Don't use welding goggles as eyewear (totally different wavelength...won't protect eyes at all) 9. Bescutter is probably the best entry level cleaning laser / bang for the buck...has a 2 year on sight service warranty 10. If USA made cleaning lasers are in your budget I'd recommend Laser Marking Technologies (1/2 the price of the big boys with better core and optics) 11. Ask for references....folks who have been using them for a while will be glad to share the good, the bad and the ugly

      You have many good points that I agree with 100% - I'm skipping over those to keep this shorter. I disagree with #3 though. Fortune Laser is based in China, yet their customer support has been incredible. #4. The machine in this video is an air cooled Pulsed laser, not continuous. I think all continuous wave machines are liquid cooled... and yes, definitely avoid any that are not. #6. It really depends on the type of cleaning you'll do. CW machines tend to etch/overheat the surface to a point where the surface is no longer smooth. Great for larger steel items where surface appearance does not matter. I feel pulsed is superior because it's usable on much more. Ideally, owning both machines would be the perfect scenario. #7. The protective eyewear that came with my machine was correct. I'd question the integrity of any company including the wrong eyewear, as that's very important. #9 I looked up Bescutter and it's hard to justify their $57,000 200w machine at 6.5x the cost of this one... but if you're a corporation and can afford such an expensive machine then more power to you. I don't think that's feasible as a small business owner or hobbyist. I think prices will continue to drop as more companies continue to manufacture these machines.

      You can sand them down and re spray the color there. The lacquer paint blends well. If you’re careful, you can scrape them down with a razor blade first to save some time sanding.
