    I follow a military vehicle restore channel , based here in the UK , I wish they'd buy one of these things , instead of pissing about with hydro blasting , chemicals and needle guns when removing paint and rust from small vehicles like cheiften tanks ect. A job that would take days , could be done in hours.

    One question: what's the expected service life of the laser itself? When these type of devices came onto the scene a few ago (with continuous laser, I assume) the laser would gave, say, a 5000 hour service life before needing replacement. Pulsed and lower power likely will have remedied this.

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  Před 10 dny

      That's a great question and I'm unsure of the answer. Keeping the machine clean is the best thing to extend its service life.

    12:24 If you cleaned long enough, will it chew through the scale or it will reflected of and laser has no effect? If you use needle scaler along with laser, is it possible to get it clean or you still need to resort to sand blasting?

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  Před 19 hodinami +1

      It might get through some of the lighter scaling eventually. Anything to knock the scale off first will allow the laser cleaner to throughly clean the surface beneath. You could use a needle scaler, wire brush, or even a metal scraper.

    I'm considering a similar unit for my metal fab shop. Is it good at removing mill scale and oxidation from welding/cutting? Also, will I be able to forgo a sand blasting cabinet with this unit?

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  Před měsícem +1

      Oxidation, absolutely. Mill scale, I’m not too sure. Slightly different situation, but when I showed the scaled rusty frame example, the rust was removed from the surface of the scales, but when I scraped them off, there was still rust underneath. I would contact Fortune Laser and see if they have a machine that might remove the mill scale. Maybe they have a continuous wave machine that can do this? I have a small blasting cabinet that I’m considering getting rid of but still might use it for smaller heavily scaled rusty parts like control arms, knuckles etc.

      Actually a lot cheaper! I initially looked at the 3-in-1 welder/cutting/cleaning machine, which was about $3k cheaper. It's a continuous wave laser though, so the cleaning isn't as good for certain surfaces. I already have a mig welder, so I really needed a machine to do cleaning.

It's in part thanks to 3D printing... sorry, _additive manufacturing,_ that the prices of industrial lasers have come down tremendously. 200 watt is a nice laser output power for an entry level powder bed selective laser melting (SLM) metal printer. Both types of devices benefit already from large drops in laser cost.
