Wooden Slicer Restoration - Discover the Power of Laser Cleaning!

- In this restoration video, I restore a beautiful vegetable slicer from the early 1900s.
More about the restoration process:
When I saw this piece for sale, I knew from the start that it would be the subject of an exciting restoration video. The restoration process went well without problems, but it was interesting mainly because I used some new machinery.
I cleaned the wood and the rust with a 2000-watt laser. It was satisfactory, and everything went faster than with the traditional sandblaster. If you want to learn more about this machine: www.sfxlyxc.com/?aff=2198
I also decided to give this vegetable slicer more personality by using a CNC engraver for the first time. It took a while to get the hang of it, but the result was very satisfying, and I cannot wait to engrave/carve something at a bigger scale.
More about CNC TTC450 here: www.twotrees3d.online/product...
I also wanted to keep a vintage vibe, and I succeeded. I didn't want to insist too much on the wood and preferred to keep the scars of the past. The blade was sanded with progression grit from 100 to 2500! Even so, tiny traces of rust pitting remained, but it didn't bother me; it looked brilliant and did the job of slicing the cabbage.
Although it looks like a rather primitive antique piece, it is made up of many parts, and one was missing, although that slot was never used; for the design, I decided to make a new piece out of aluminum.
All the metal parts were nickel plated and then painted olive green.
I worked on this cabbage slicer for two weeks with much love and patience, and I'm thrilled with how it turned out. It works great and will be very useful in my kitchen!
Please ask me if you have any questions about what I used and why! I answer every one!
More about Mandolin Vegetable/Cabbage Slicers:
This antique slicer is known as a kraut (cabbage) cutter, although, besides cabbage, it could be used for a variety of foods, such as turnips, carrots, and beets, to name a few. Homemade sauerkraut (pickled cabbage) is a way to preserve cabbage by layering and pounding thinly sliced cabbage and salt in a crock or other suitable container. It is then left in a cool place to marinate or pickle in its juices.
Before kraut cutters were invented, cabbage was cut by hand with a knife. Early cutters were quite roughly made. Most were wooden boxes with a slot cut out of the bottom to which a scythe blade was attached so that it was slightly higher than the bottom. Cabbage cutters later became more refined. Some even had two and three blades. Other improvements made were holders to keep your hands away from the blade as you ran the cabbage over the blades.
Records show that cabbage cutters and the making of sauerkraut came to America as early as 1848 when people from Germany and Central Europe immigrated. Some people still make homemade kraut today.

Hi folks! Here is the new restoration project! One of the most satisfying videos that I have done!? You tell me! Enjoy watching! Cheers!
An antique mandoline slicer ~ not just for cabbage, for other fruit & vegetables and “perfectly” sliced cheese
That's for sure! You can slice a lot of veggies with it.
*_The restored version looks absolutely splendid! I appreciate your hard work on restoring these items!_*
Thank you so much! 🙂
Beautiful restoration. But I would be too scared to try and slice anything on that 😂
Thank you! 🙂 Yes, I was a bit afraid too, but I got the move, and it was all good!
Most modern mandoline slicers have a sliding hand guard to hold the food item and protect the fingers! ~ he could have made a matching guard with wood and food-safe stain on it 😉
Wow, this laser! 😮
Glad you enjoyed!
I love the laser sandblasting ability you have. The slicer turns out awesome.
Thank you Troy! I'm glad you enjoyed the restoration process. 🙂
It looks really nice… especially with the engraved cabbage. But I’m wondering… did you use food-safe stain, paint, etc.?
Hi Vickie! I'm glad you enjoyed the restoration process and the engraving.
I'm always using food-safe products when it comes to kitchen gadgets. Most of them im keeping for personal use, so I need to be food-safe. 🙂
Very interesting seeing laser at work!
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I will use it in more projects. Cheers!
I was thinking that zinc on the blade would resist future pitting. And you MUST operate it with a pusher: I have sutured up two peoples fingers and palms from these devices. They certainly do cut well, and don’t care if it’s vegetables or flesh. Nice tool!
That's right, and I have to make a pusher or buy cut-proof gloves. Thank you for your advice and for watching!
@@rustyshadesrestoration I have used a stainless mesh glove while butchering things, and it certainly prevents the inevitable nicks one gets, and improves grip as well. I found that soaking it in detergent and a mild acid followed by agitation cleans it well. Should work fine to keep fingertips in place with these devices.
Definitely a finger print remover
Beautiful restoration, as always! I question whether this is strictly a cabbage cutter; it operates exactly like a mandoline, which is used to slice all kinds of vegetables and would have been more useful in a 1900s kitchen than a single purpose tool. My only quibble would be not to use a dark stain on this because a light stain, or better yet, a lime wash would show food particles a bit more clearly and you'd want to keep this clean, like any other kitchen tool. Better make yourself a pusher to use on the vegetables, too, or you might find yourself without fingerprints someday!
Thank you! Yes, a pusher or some cut-proof gloves will help.
By design, this is a cabbage cutter, but other veggies can be sliced too. Please read the description for more information! Cheers!
Wow. Control freak much?
I like the result. High decorative anderen all so usefull in the kitchen.
Glad you like it. I think I will use it from time to time. 🙂
Love the outcome and the laser
Thank you Bela!
The laser is magnificent, and so impressive! I hope all the paint, oil, and wood finish are food safe.
Thank you, Alex! I'm glad you like the laser cleaner. When I'm restoring kitchen gadgets I'm always using food-safe products, because most of the items are going to be used 🙂
Cheers!
I'm glad to hear that about food safe products. I understand a lot of the time many objects are "restored" just for looks and won't actually be used with food. However, in my opinion, to "restore" something is to return it to being capable of full use, even if it is going to be set on a shelf to be looked at.
Wow! That was really made to last. Great job and very satisfying to watch.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent resto! When I first saw the thumbnail, I said "that's a kraut cutter!" My grandmother used a similar one, which my dad has somewhere. I remember when we made sauerkraut one summer--lots and lots of cabbage shredded and packed in crocks. I know people are saying it could be used for other vegetables, not just cabbage. Of course it can but what it mostly was used for was cabbage.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, that's right, this item it was designed for cutting cabbage, but nobody stops people from from cutting other veggies too.
I'll be sure to stay tuned to this channel. I just receive so much from the entertainment business. That's what makes it so difficult for me to concentrate. Also, past memories can and will do it.
Thank you so much for watching my videos! 🙂
Hello from France
reminded me of when my dad used one to make sauerkraut
Greetings from Poland! I'm glad I could bring you back those beautiful memories!
I've always been convinced that the mandolin was necessarily a tool that came to us from Asia... Too bad for me! (I think the blade could be sharper, but watch your fingers!) Wonderful, thank you very much!
Totally agree!
Loved your little cabbage helper! Great video, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed the video! 🙂
This is beautiful. I wish I had something more like this. I had a small plastic potato slicer that works similarly but it nothing fancy like that
Great restoration,love the laser usage.turned out very nice.kudos 👍👍👍😎😎😎
Thank you Tom! Glad you enjoyed!
Wow that laser is pretty slick!❤
Glad you like it! 🙂
Great work!
Thanks bro! ✊️

Gracias 🙂
wonderful, that laser...wow.... hope some soup or potatoes and cabbage with sausage was made... 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it! I never waste food. Cabbage with sausage, you got it! 🙂
You're added another 50years to its LIFE. Spot On Bro.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you, James! I 🙂
Another fabulous video. Great work with the laser - that looked so cool. Must admit, I didn't know there were such things as cabbage slicers - modern or antique 😃
Thank you Graham! Glad you enjoyed the restoration process and the laser cleaner. 😀
I know you have to love using that laser!!!
Absolutely! It is very satisfying and saves me a lot of time.
Buen trabajo
Gracias! 🙂
Excellent job, what a potentially dangerous version of a slicer!! Lovely job and really good to see it back in ace condition.
Thank you, Tim. I'm glad to know that you enjoyed the video 😀
By the way, I just wanted to say that I watch your videos when I want to relax. I find that your restoration work is very relaxing to watch.
Thank you for letting me know and for watching my work 😊 Mulch appreciated!
Looks amazing but what does the vacuum no longer make the slurp sounds!? It was amazing!
Thank you! 🙂 I forgot to renew my subscription to epidemic sound, and if I use it without, I will get a copyright claim. 😅 But if you enjoy it, I will start using it again.
Looks wonderful and you did an excellent job restoring it as well!!!
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up

Wow, it's beautiful again. I just might be persuaded to make coleslaw or cabbage soup! I have a much smaller one, so maybe I will clean it up and use it. You do wonderful work.
Thank you! Go for it! I'm sure it will be worth the effort!
From the technology to the skill a great project.
I'm glad you enjoyed the process Bob! Thank you for watching! 🙂
Love your respect for the object during the process.
Thank you! 🙂
Beautiful restoration mister good job well done
Thank you so much Vince!
Nice job! 😊
Thank you! 🙂
I need one of these for cutting my rescue rabbits food every night, I have a house full of the fluffs. They love cabbage 🐰💚
That's a great idea! You can find it online. I saw a few. 🙂
Piekny! Sehr gute Arbeit.
Thank you!!
I enjoy the work you do, both the physical, and mental effort you put in.
Thank you for your kind words! That means a lot to me, and such a comments are pure motivation! Best, Johnny
Well done.😊😊😊
Thanks, buddy! 🙂
Excellent restoration, Rusty! Fascinating to watch you restoring things. I've never heard of or seen a cabbage slicer before; I usually shred mine with a ruddy great kitchen knife; lol. Think I kinda like my way best, but it's a pleasure to see old things restored.
Thank you so much Lauren! I'm glad you enjoyed the video 🙂 Have a great weekend!
I love mandolin slicers. Nice restoration. 👍
Glad to know that! They are handy and beautiful. 🙂
Ficou lindo, parabéns
Amazing
Glad you enjoyed Gary!
The Tool is referred to as a "Specialize Mandolin".
It's used in most every "Kitchen" when You want to Prepare a "Gourmet Meal".
Sincerely Yours 🤠 Mr Severance,
"The Cake 😋 🍰🎂 🥳🎉 🎊 Man".
Lovely restoration! But seriously consider wearing a "cut proof glove" when using it, if you aren't going to craft some type of hand guard. Those are FAR cheaper than stitches, and the pain of finger injuries. Ol' Vrghr always wears one when using the mandolin.
Thank you! You are right, and I will buy a pair of cut-proof gloves. Unfortunately, at that moment, I didn't have any, but I was meticulous, and things went well.
Now I'm thinking how many risks people had back in the early 1900s using such devices daily...
Thank you for reposting this ,,,I love watching you bring stuff back to life I think you can fix anything ,,,I'd love to have this old slicer to use in my kitchen I think the old things are fun to have & use
Thank you, Diane! Yes, I love them too, it is so satisfying to cook something using such vintage items. 😍
Subscribed! My knees went a bit wobbly when you were testing the slicer afterwards as it's so easy to end up slicing yourself on vegetable mandolins...don't ask me how I know!!!😟 great restoration. Greetings from the UK.
Thank you! Yes, I had some emotions, because I never used one before, but luckily everything went well. 😀
The laser cleaning is amazingly cool, I never knew you could do that. Beautiful restoration
Glad you enjoyed! 🙂
Amazing! Thank you for another great video!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
I never saw a taser deruster before but it looks awesome!!
Nice job,i can use one of these slicing machines today but i doubt they even make them anymore.
Glad you enjoyed it! They make mandolin slicers, but from plastic.
Pretty work. Never seen a wooden one before. I’m surprised you didn’t make a safety handle thingy so you don’t cut yourself.
Thank you, Ghoul! Yeah, I should make some kind of pusher. I was very curious about how it works and didn't consider it a must for the test only. My fingers are all in their place 😅
great job...👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
This is really great no matter how you slice it >;J
The laser was very, very cool! The whole project turned out gorgeous, as usual! I love watching your channel
...I did curl into a small ball and only watch through my fingers when you started to really put some muscle into slicing the cabbage - that was terrifying. Mandolins are notorious for their thirst for blood, and fingers
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah, that's right, it is probably the most "evil" kitchen invention 😅
I liked watching this restoration, thought it was pretty cool. Great job :)
Thank you for watching Michael! 🙂
I think you need some sort of tool to hold cabbage while slicing it, because sooner or later you gonna injure your fingers if you're not careful.
Yes, I may build a pusher. This time I was careful, but as you said, you never know...
Do you remember who was the president?
R.S. great video as expected. Question, how long off the shown content did this whole project take?
Thank you, Jamal. This project took me almost one week; some were faster, some longer. For example, the vintage scooter that I restored took me one entire month.
I did the survey and checked "watch later" Looks great. And very sharp. I wonder if there used to be a holder to keep hands off the blade? 👍🏻
Thank you, Rick. This one didn't have any holder or any kind of protection. It is may one of the most dangerous kitchen gadgets invented that I have ever seen.
Beautifull restoration, i liked the engraving. Is wood stain food safe? You did not wax or oil the wood after staining?
Thank you. I'm glad you like the engraving. Soon I will do a bigger project with that CNC machine. The wood was oiled, and yes, I'm always using safe food products for kitchen gadgets because most of them will be used in my home, and I care about my health and other people's well-being. 🙂
Cool!
Glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
That stone does better sharpening dry then wet.
Great job! I gotta ask what was that applicator you out the stain on with?
Thank you. It is a sponge dabber. You can find it online or at art shops.
@@rustyshadesrestoration thanks, I have started to do some wood restore projects and would love to try something else to stain with.

There is more information in the video description.
Captain Kirk called, he wants his laser back! 😊
😅
I love all your restorations and seeing the beautiful work you do. Some bring back memories of gadgets my mom had and some me, many my grandmother.
Missed this one, my daughter had two teeth extracted so I was a bit busy… but try to catch up, like today
Some of your equipment must cost a fortune. This is the first time I’ve seen you use a light saber. Lol🇺🇸
Thank you for watching my videos! I appreciate it! Hope your daughter is fine now! 🙏
@@rustyshadesrestoration she is , thank you. I go Tuesday, I’m the wuss. Lol
I have been extensively researching laser machines as an additional option to my sandblasting business. It was interesting to see you use a CW laser on wood. It was my understanding that wood required the use of a pulse laser to prevent burning. Is it the same technique as sandblasting in that I have to keep moving or I will blast a hole in the surface? Keep the laser moving and it won't burn the wood? TIA
Hi! Yes, low power and frequency, plus moving faster. That's the secret, but nobody can guarantee you won't mess it up. I always have a test piece close to me.
Thank you for the quick reply. I am struggling to find a reason not to purchase one. I need to work through the power source as I would be offering a mobile service, but that shouldn't be too difficult.
@@rustyshadesrestoration
Hella dope results, @rustyshadesrestoration!
How is the wood not catching fire when you use the laser? 6:00
If the settings are done well, the laser doesn't burn things at all. Should only hit the surface particles and dislocate them from the object.
Great restoration! The laser is a bit distracting...smoke and bright reflection.
Thank you, Lisa. Hmm, maybe too many close-ups. I will figure out how to film the process to be more satisfying. Thank you for your feedback. 🙂
And to turn that metal grid into a down-draught table ~ given how much smoke the wood pieces were emitting
Whybuse the laser and not the blastsander?
I'm using both, but I prefer the laser; it is much faster and eco-friendly.
Sandblaster>Laserblaster because I like the sound of sand more 😅
Haha, maybe, but when it comes to efficiency, time and eco-friendly, laser wins.
❤️
Thank you for watching 🙂
“Well, I’m sure you could slice a lot of things on th-“
“NO! CABBAGE ONLY!”
Absolutely. But it was designed for cabbage, and it is known for that. 🙂
🤣😂😆🤣
I'm was careful. The slicer will be just a decorative item 😀

I think it's great when I see old, broken things given a new life. Unfortunately, things are thrown away far too quickly because they are old and defective, although so many things can be repaired and restored, which is an incredible shame.

Hi👋
Hi there! 👋
Looks like the wrong choice of laser is being used. A pulsed top hat beam would be more appropriate than a CW.
