- In this video, I restored a toaster made in the USA between 1915 and 1920.
More about the restoration process:
I received this antique toaster from the USA from a Subscriber, whom I thank for allowing me to restore it, and for the gift sent in the package! Thanks, Mark! I haven't been able to find a toaster like this online, nor much information, but as a model, it is one of the first toasters invented in America.
If you recognize it and have more information, please write me.
Disassembly was difficult as the parts were extremely rusty, and I had to be extremely careful not to break anything. I then cleaned the rusted parts with a 2000-watt laser. It was satisfactory, and everything went faster than with the traditional sandblaster. If you want to learn more about this machine: www.sfxlyxc.com/?aff=2198
Small parts (screws, nuts, etc.) were cleaned with a mini tumbler, where I used aluminum oxide as media.
After cleaning the significant parts, I had to light-polish them with a wire brush to remove the patina. If I had not used paint, this would not have been necessary.
Then I painted them in chrome (so was the original). And the small parts were nickel plated and polished.
The wood pieces looked perfect for their age, but in places had scratches and areas where the finish was faded. I restored these, too, using some innovative furniture repair markers, then applied a clear coat to protect the surface of the wood.
The muscovite/mica washers were left for 24 hours in a cleanser and then wiped off with a tissue. I then followed the assembly of the toaster and its testing. Surprisingly, everything went according to plan, and the old toaster worked perfectly. I couldn't find such a power cord, so I had to improvise something to make the test. I do not advise anyone to do it. Let the professionals do it!
It took me a few tries before I figured out how long to let the bread toast, but I finally got a few slices of delicious toast!
Please ask me if you have any questions about what I used and why! I answer them all!
More about antique toasters:
With the arrival of wood and coal stoves in the 1880s, a new toasting method was needed. This led to a tin and wire pyramid-shaped device. The bread was placed inside, and the stove heated the machine. The fire was the heat source for toasting bread until 1905 when the engineer Albert Marsh created a nickel and chromium composite called Nichrome. Marsh's invention was easily shaped into wires or strips and had low electrical conductivity. Within months, other inventors were using Nichrome to produce electric toasters.
Frank Shailor of General Electric brought out the first successful version in 1909. The D-12 model consisted of a cage-like device with a single heating element. It could only toast one side of the bread at once; the bread had to be flipped by hand to toast both sides. Since the majority of homes had limited access to electrical power, the electric toaster was used only in restaurants. To give an idea of how little electricity was then, it was generally unavailable during daylight hours.
Cheers! Johnny.

Hi folks! Restoring this antique toaster was a very satisfying process, and I hope you will like the video too!
For more info, please read the description! Cheers!
Very nice!
Don't forget, you are using 220 V and this was made for 110V. Of course it will be glowing like crazy. But I still love the result.
Nice work 👍 I really enjoyed watching the laser rust remover. Did a great job. The toaster turned out sweet. Cooks better than my toaster. Maybe I should send you that 😅
@@razorboyXVII Thank you!
@AnnaNimus That's right. For now, I didn't need a transformer, but I'll buy one. Who knows what kind of items I'll have to restore in the future.
It's poetic that something so old and primitive is being restored with a laser ray gun. To the people who created it, it would seem super futuristic because it is
Right?! It's so cool how future tools can help restore century old tools that were the top of the line technology of their time. It's definitely poetic.
*_There's just something magical about watching something that was so old and broken being restored back to looking so new. Its such a thing to watch. ❤_*
Thank you 🙂
It's from US and they use 110/120 Volt, whereas you in Poland use 220/240 Volt like the rest of us here in Europe, and that's why you burned your toast - too much power! 😊
That's right, J! Somehow, I managed to be fast enough to get a few good toasted slices 😀
In poland 230V not 240V.
@@No0bo0dY
Regardless, still too much.
@@No0bo0dY Poland is connected to the European eclectic grid, as we're selling and buying electricity from each other, and the specified voltage is between 220 and 240 Volts. You say you have 230 Volts in Poland, but try putting a voltmeter to one of your power outlets and you will see that it can fluctuate between 220V and 240V.
We also have 230V as the official voltage here in Denmark, but right now I measure 237V in my power outlets. 🙂
⚠️ 🥵, risk of burning out/melting the nickel chrome wire ~ that is why the toast was being instantly burned
My friend... Voltage in the USA is usually between 110-125 volts. In Europe it is 220-240 volts. It is normal that your restored toaster is toasting that bread way too quickly😄. You did a beautiful job!
Thank you, Joel. I know that very well. I didn't intend to buy a transformer just for 30 seconds of demonstration because it may stay unused for who knows how much time, which will be buried money for my little workshop. I prefer now to invest in other kinds of tools that may help me in my daily work.
Cheers! Johnny!
"Quite primitive???" You think today's fancy-ass toasters will be around 10 years from now, let alone 100, and still be able to make work? The grill design is so graceful and elegant. And mica washers!!!
Agree! I was referring only to the way of wiring and that there is no grounding.
@@rustyshadesrestoration, safety's overrated... 😄
This is honestly the coolest toaster I've ever seen! And I want one 😂 like it gives you full controll and warms your house at the same time ❤😂 great restoration too!
My husband and I are hooked! I loved the equipment you used. Keep it up!
Thank you! Will do!
I'm sure this toaster looks better today than it did the day it was bought! Congratulations! You're right, it's a fairly primitive system; with its bare heating elements, it wouldn't pass any modern certification... That said, the mechanism for rotating the slices of bread is genius!
It really is!
you made it like new, very nice job 👍
Thank you! 🙂
Despite being rusted beyond recognition, it was in surprisingly good condition. Not bent and dented too badly. Pretty scary to use, I’d expect! Not safety rated, I’m guessing! And the wooden knobs and feet! I was expecting those to be Bakelite. Also in great condition. Nice job on the restoration.
That's right. I was so surprised by how well the wooden parts were preserved; at first glance, I thought it was Bakelite too. Thank you for watching my videos! 🙂
You never saw real rusty surfaces then.
My attention was on the toast. I like mine a little burnt not much but a little with butter melted on. I just like the taste..... good job as usual.....
That was a great restoration. Enjoyed watching all the various ways to remove decades of rust and usage. The toast test was neat too. I would have had a piece of toast if I was there! 😊
Glad you enjoyed it! I'll be happy to share with you!
If i had taken this apart, i would never have been able to put it back together. Great job.
For sure, you will manage it! Thank you 🙂
You are becoming something of a toaster specialist
Hahaha. 2-3 more and ill change the channel name in Rusty Toasters Restoration 😅
I am blown away!!!!!
I'm glad to know that, Mark! It was an absolute pleasure to work on it, and I appreciate that you sent it to me! Cheers!
This is INSANE! WOW!
Awesome work 👏
Nicely done. The laser makes quick work of rust removal. I think I could watch that all day.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the process of cleaning.
Honestly this is such a genius idea, I can see my bread and get it as toasted as I want
Yes, that's a great idea.
I was a bit jealous that you would get to try the toaster out and not me. But after seeing you try it out I quickly changed my mind. 😁😁😁. Great job though. Thanks for sharing it.
Yes, I do not recommend that 😅
Laser BBQ. Cool! 👍
great job. 🔧🔩⚒️🛠️🍻🍻🍻🍻👍
Thank you Mike!
We used one that wasn't electric a long LONG time ago. It was in our supplies for when the power went out.
Fajnie że nawet widzowie za granicy pomagają ci w tworzeniu kontentu i wysyłają takie perełki do naprawy :) Super film jak zawsze pozdrawiam
Dziękuję! Pozdrawiam
Yummy, indeed! That is a beautiful little machine, and an excellent restoration job! ⭐️
I have a little toaster from the mid-1930s that worked like a dream. It makes the best toast ever!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video V bee! I'll be happy to see what your toaster looks like. You can send me photos on Instagram if you wish. 🙂
Once again, Great work 👍 never saw a toaster do its thing so fast. If you blink, it burns the bread 😅 but must be great when you wake up late and is in a hurry. Amazing video and restoration!
Thank you, Raion Garu! The reason for being so fast is that in Europe, we have 220v, and this old buddy was built for 110v. 🙂
Sure looks good, and works faster than a lot of the modern ones.
Absolutely! Thanks for watching! 🙂
Very interesting design
I love these moving trays!
Infernal machine!
Hahaha, good one! 👍
Oh, man! you're a kinda magician!!! Turned out very nice. Got my satisfaction with the Laser cleaning %)))
Great to hear!
Simply built. pieces of artwork, your restoration, priceless
I'm glad you enjoyed the restoration process. 🙂
great restore! If its from the USA, we use 120 volts.. If youre using 240 volts, thats why the bread burned up. Great job Sir!
Thanks! That's right; I had to use 220v because I Still don't have an inverter. Cheers
Amazing ! What's a restoration 😮
Thank you! 🙂
Beautiful restoration mister good job
Thank you, Vince! 🙂
Ok, that laser is pretty cool 😊
Master you the best
Thank you! 🙂
Nice restoration!
Thank you 🙂
Usta eline yüregine sağlik güzel oldu
Elegant.
Your knowledge is remarkable! Who else would even know there is a way to clean mica washers? I didn't know there was such a thing as mica washers.
Thank you so much! 🙂
Love that laser machine
Seeing you eat toast with gloves on was the only thing that my brain couldn't comprehend. I would use it but not at home now, I have 3 kids that cam put ice on fire if you don't take care of them. Imagine with this toaster! lol
This toaster will not be used, and I keep gloves on because before doing this video, I had a huge renovation in my house, and my hands weren't looking that appetising. Not so hard to comprehend/guess, actually. Cheers!
@@rustyshadesrestoration With all the info, I would use gloves too. Great project!
great works, thanks
Thank you! 🙂
Well now I want one!
Hard to find this model, but there are some old toasters on eBay. Pretty similar.
@@rustyshadesrestoration thank you!
First, you have the neatest, and cleanest work room I’ve ever seen. Have you given up on sand blasting and gone to the dark and quick side of laser? LOL Irregardless, you always find interesting gadgets to restore. My dad had one such, they were something you had to keep an eye on. Burnt Toast! 🍞
Thank you! I'm trying my best to keep it clean, even though my work is one of the dirtiest possible 😅 The switch between sandblaster and laser helps too, but I'll not give up entirely on it.
Another helpful video. 😊😊
I'm glad to know that! 🙂
God bless you 🌹
Thank you! God bless you too!
Cool restoration, you did a great job
Thank you very much!
Огромное удовольствие от вашей работы !! Спасибо !!!
Great video. I love the laser but prefer sand blasting...
Thank you 🙂 In the next video I'll use sandblaster too.
Great video R.S. as always.
Thank you, Jamal! Glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
잘 보고 가요 ㅋㅋ 좋은 하루 보내세요🧡👍🏻
Thank you! Have a great day too!
Прекрасная работа! Браво!

You’re sacked from making the toast mate hahahaha. Great restoration x
Hahaha. Rusty Toasters Restoration, maybe I'll change the brand name. 😅
Another great job at restoration. Keep up the good work and entertaining content 👍
Thanks, will do! 🙂
I see first laser cleaning in restoration channel. 😊
I hope you enjoy it! 🙂
what a satisfying restoration. u gave the toaster its life again, yay! although , u not wearing gloves during the dissembling kind of gave me anxiety 😂😂
Thank you! Yeah, the package was late and came the next day; that's why later I have them on. Usually, I wear gloves all the time, even though rust doesn't harm the skin.
@@rustyshadesrestoration Glad to know it's not a concern :D
It's the first time I see this 😊
Glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
Despues de un siglo esta tostadora ha sido dado en mantenimiento ...a sombroso ...podre ahora si poner mis panes 😊☺😁gracias.... exelente trabajo ...hoy 2023..
Amazing😊
Thank you! 🙂
Прекрасная работа !!! 👏👏👏
Thank you 🙂
You could heat a whole house with that, haha! Nice work
😅😅 Thanks!
Eres un artista!!! Muy bello tu trabajo
Thank you! 🙂
火力すごw
何十年と仕組みが変わってない安価なポップアップトースターが完成されちゃってることも良くわかりますねえ
you did a great job as always 😀❤
Avec un lazer 😮 mind blown
🤯😄
You impress me with that laser thing and then disappoint me by not chrome-plating the parts.
Thank you. I do not have a chrome-plating kit or station yet, so I'm using the closest alternative option possible.
Getting to see the toast being toasted is such luxury. Amazing!
Enjoy watching! 🙂
Ha ! you should make a video where you toast bread using the laser device!
😅 Maybe I will make some shorts. Laser vs different things
Thanks for blasting UV light in my eyes, my future cancer thanks you 👏 👏 👏
... Uauuuu ... Magnífico , gostei da limpeza á base de Raio Laser ...
you got a different and modern approach for restoration.❤️🇮🇳
I'm glad you like it! Greetings from Poland!
Amazing work, I have seen these at Antique stores but never one that had electricity to it. I see you live in Poland do you understand English I live in the USA in the state of Ohio. Really enjoy watching you, thanks.
Thank you for watching my videos. 🙂
I'm happy to know that!
Complimenti ti seguo sempre e sei veramente molto bravo ❤
Grazie mille! 🙂
早く焼けるから便利そう!
Amazing looking restoration and you did an excellent job restoring it!!
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you! 🙂
@@rustyshadesrestoration You're welcome!!
Fun-tastic ! Now onto those butter spreading techniques 😉 somebody just gave me whiskey marmalade for my birthday .Time for 1:45 am snack , your fault lol
Mmm, whiskey marmalade 🤤
Nice..looks like or similar to a Landers, Frary & Clark flip toaster from early 1900, but before 1916, however, more than a few toaster manufacturers copied the basic design and marketed their own
That's right. I have a Landers Frary & Clark toaster, too, just the way of flipping the bread slices is different. Maybe in one day, I will have time to restore it; it needs some attention. Thank you for watching! 🙂
Nice 👍🏻.
Thank you! Cheers!
Needed to probably use a converter/adapter and get the voltage down to 110/120, wouldn’t overload the coils and cause you to burn the bread. And think of having a cage on a long handle to present bread to your fire in fireplace before toasters. If your toast is too dark, there is scraping it with your knife to knock off the burnt-scrape until it’s as dark as you want it. Wonderful restoration job, though!
Thank you, D! Yes, I will probably buy a transformer. Till now, I didn't need one as long as I did not every day working with 110v devices.
The other slices went well, but I had to move very fast. Cheers!
Very nice restoration 😊
Thank you Andrew! 🙂
Muy buen resultado.
Gracias! 🙂
One of the reasons why early toasters (at least through the '40s) were so ornate, was because they set at the breakfast table.
Do you mean that they were built and used in such a way to inspire wealth in others or just to look suitable for the owners?
It was about being decorative.
Ah, alright! In a way makes sense. They had to attract people somehow to buy it because most didn't see a reason to spend on such a device, I guess.
Primitive indeed. I imagine many a slice of bread went up in flames because someone was distracted for a few seconds. Very pretty so maybe this is best put on a shelf as a decoration!😂
That's its faith to be a decorative piece.
Parabéns um maravilhoso trabalho
Obrigado
wow!!!! what we can do with lasers now!!!!
what i learned from this ? that our bread got much smaller and the price much more !
Когда я был маленьким у нас были электрические обогреватель с такой спиралью и да, они светились во время работы
Merci très on travail👌
Avec plaisir! 🙂
Next time try not to leave the bread to long...
You did a beautiful job!😊
Hahaha, I will. Thank you!
