I love the laser ablation process. Really fascinated by it. Thanks for the detailed explanation. Like others have said it's a key element in what makes your content great, and why you were so good in Wheeler Dealers too. Always a very good way of explaining things in a correct and polite manner Ed. Paul is the same with his approach too. Great pairing

laser cleaning always seemed cool and it seem great for smaller areas/projects.
however when it comes to objects like this i would still go for acid dipping (you get the inside aswell) and way less time spent for your employees (which can be shown here almost no content because it takes forever) should just have sent it off while working on something else (more content, more money everyone happy)

those machines cost a fortune, so rent one will be as expensive as dipping it in acid bath. And like you said, the inside does get cleaned aswell,
and then i woud dip it in a zinc bath and never have to worry about rust again for at least half a century.

I dont think it takes too long. Sure, you might get it back faster if you take it to a blaster, but this is way cheaper, you can use it on a lot of different things as you go. Imagine you have taken apart a whole car, you'd wanna get it all in one go, would be a lot of stuff and take a long'ish time. Now Edd could send off some parts more suited for a blaster, and do the other stuff at home while waiting. I think it's brilliant tech that maybe isn't really ready to replace the blasters.

    • @3DPeter
      @3DPeter Pƙed 2 lety +7

@@eddchina But it's sure not profitable, because the machine cost an arm, two legs and a few ribs, and no customer is willing to
pay someone who operates it for hours and hours, so sandblasting is cheaper and faster, and dipping in acid and then galvanise
it is also cheaper and faster, and also gets the inside done, so this laser machine is not something the car restoration busines
      is waiting for.

I opted for that Subaru (and love that car) but there has been recalls and even class action lawsuits for the issues with oil use on those vehicles. *Literally, if you had the information you'd get reimbursed the price of a quart for every oil change up to a certain amount, because the vehicle required more constant changes and some other quirks.*

Alternatively you could put the entire frame in a bath, fill it with evapo-rust and it would be rust free in the morning. A 55 gallon drum of evapo-rust is about 700$USD and is non-toxic so when you're done you just dump it down the drain, dry your chassis and repaint. The benefit of the bath being it will be rust free inside and out too over the laser.

With regards the episodes, I’m quite happy to have just one a week. Something to look forward and not overloading the viewership. As for length, more is always good but appreciate not everyone has the time or attention span, but certainly no less than 30mins please.
I understand these things take a lot of time and resources, so maybe every last Friday of the month, you do something different, perhaps “simpler”, eg extended q&a, maybe segments featuring Paul or Neil by themselves, little bits on the cool tools in the workshop or how to’s (not all of us are confident with even the simple jobs!) or even Baking with Edd
 :D
Now I shall add #carly to this post too in the hope I win and then can discover what the yellow light on my dashboard really means
.

I would have welded the rust holes and shipped it off for media blast and hot dip galvanising or maybe zinc metal spray. The latter leaves a rough surface ideal for epoxy primer and overcoat. It's used by the Brixham fishing boats so must be pretty tough.

Yes I agree - it out weighs the amount of £ investment required to set up this laser system, you could probably get quite a few chassis media blasted & powder coated 😉

Knowing a bit about Laser Cleaning myself, what’s rarely disclosed is the top tier machines from the best 3-4 reputable manufacturers (which includes Narran) start around $50-$80K for a small / Low W backpack model, to $150-$300K for a 1-4KW air / water cooled, semi-portable cabinet models. In the US, few / no companies lease the machines, so they’re a bit out of reach for small / med. shops and are usually +120 day “build to order” lead times. In my region (S.E. US) there are a few service providers that will do mobile cleaning for you at around $100-$150 per hour (depending on conditions), available power supply, height of specific work area, etc. plus travel costs,
Typically, the smaller the machine, the slower the cleaning efficiency (area per minute / hour) and beware of the “cheap” machines. Like with most advanced technology, you usually get what you pay for.
IMO, rust cleaning on a heavy gauge chassis isn’t the “comfort zone” of the LC’s capabilities, when dustless blasting / various media blasting is faster / more efficient and less expensive. They also aren’t yet very effective on thick coatings. The LC’s certainly shine in their own niche, I.e. surface cleaning jobs under strict environmental constraints (from airborne contaminants), large / stationary target components, temperature sensitive / lightweight materials prone to warping, light / moderate surface contamination and finishes on highly contoured components like auto parts (various oils, carbon deposits, etc.) and high production specialized surface prep for manufacturing, etc. just to name a few.
Not trying to discourage anyone that’s interested, because the technology is super cool, just a reality check that there aren’t Laser Cleaning Suppliers that I’ve found with shelves full of units ready to ship out and at low cost. JS

Read the TrustPilot reviews FIRST: You can't do the things shown in the vid unless you pay a rolling annual subscription - and you won't get a refund if the thing breaks or is generally U/S - Carly have been offering a 15% discount in return for 5* reviews but then not honouring their offer....so research this for yourself - don't take my word for it.
