  • Laser cleaning is a non-contact method of removing grime and surface contamination. It works by sending short pulses of light that are absorbed by coating particles like rust and paint. The interaction causes these particles to detach from the surface. Kevin Harrison, who is the owner of Project Laser in Western Australia, walks us through how he uses lasers to remove soot from fire damage on exterior and interior walls.

      You'd have to be very mindful of what the paint pigments are made of. The laser is doing a process called ablation. You can think of it as a light jackhammer. While the big laser might be a 200W, that's measured at continuous wave output. When you pulse a laser you're looking at peak power as the key performance criterion, which is a function of the pulse duration and frequency.
      When you ablate something you're dumping all the energy in your pulse into the target to vaporize it. If it's a highly volatile oxidative material you can get it to ignite, so you gotta be careful.

  • @JJFX-

    What blows me away is the ability to tune it so that you can clean delicate materials that are even potentially flammable without damaging the surface. Removing surface contaminates from a wall without affecting even the painted surface is just extraordinary. I hope we get to a point where a significantly toned down version can be feasible as a household product.

      The big problem with lasers is its REALLY easy to laser your or someone else's eyes; lasers can go quite far and if they hit a reflective surface they can bounce to unexpected locations, this is why they always use laser goggles and put up those light absorbing fences

    • @GeomancerHT
      @GeomancerHT Před rokem
