Your troubleshooting steps are pretty much what I use in an industrial maintenance position. In fact, it was tinkering and working on my first 3D printer, an Anet A8, that inspired me to learn more about how machines work and pursue a degree in mechatronics technology which led to me now being an industrial maintenance technician.
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. You are awesome!
@@3DPrintingNerd You're awesome too, Joel! Your videos gave me a lot of inspiration to keep working on things and even led me to finding my favorite filament brand, Protopasta! Guys like you make the community great and I hope you keep your boundless positivity!
Retro translucent cases (especially in purple) need to make a comeback
Truth!
I'll take translucent blue, please
Agreed
iMac energy
In his interview with CNC Kitchen, the CEO of Bambu Lab Dr Tao said that they made the special transparent versions while the injection moulds were brand-new, before they got "punished", which I think means the brand-new moulds are necessary to get a good surface finish for the transparency.
He also said that transparent plastics are more brittle, which is tricky for a 3D printer because the plastic has to withstand a certain amount of stress.
As far as injection moulded transparent abs, it's so brittle, sadly it's used more often in speed cubes(rubiks cubes made for solving fast) and it causes so many issues.
Makes sense but this is excelent as test printers before launching globally
Nicely done, and an excellent video! I like that instead of focusing on the OPTICS, you communicated your steps and thought processes in a CRYSTAL CLEAR manner.
Thanks man! I really hope this helps others get the confidence! WELL PLAYED.
I'm glad the thumbnail for this video is a thumbnail. Nice to see a fix for that in case someone else has the issue.
THUMBNAIL IN A THUMBNAIL
You are really onto something Joel, interesting how the preproduction models had the transparent case. I always was fascinated by clear cases, mostly because it was interesting to see the insides of the (video game console, or whatever) but having a proper view of what you are doing on the inside while navigating a repair is absolutely a step in the right direction!
Your macro shots of the assembly are fantastic, nicely done!
A clear cut case of excellent troubleshooting and repair.
I had the same issue with my X1 carbon actually and it appears that they are using the exact same metal lever in there. A quick shave of the plastic around it prevented it from getting stuck again.
Awesome macro photography
Awesome, very pellucid! I'm so glad you were able to clear the problem.
You could use a small syringe (like those used by diabetics) to apply the lubricant to the spring without removing the spring (and possibly of loosing it). I’ve done this several times before and it works
For those worried about putting this back together, I would recommend trying to put some of that lube/grease on something like a toothpick and schmo it against the side.
-The amount of grease put on there is probably not more than what you apply with your fingers when you swap out the filament spools.
Bro... that shirt... so many memories of those media types.
Love the shirt!!!! Currently have been watching "Halt and Catch Fire" and having fond memories of floppy discs...
Glad it worked out.
I love a good troubleshooting episode!
It's helpful to see how to break down a problem and it's a good reminder that this hobby isn't always "press button get thing".
Glad you liked it!
Great job! It is really funny to me using Prusa lub that you already had on the Bambu Lab printer to fix it. Everyone just needs to get along ;)
Like the first Game Boy ...transparent is the Best 😍
The amount of innuendo is crazy if a normal person was listening. Clear covers definitely help and need to make a comeback.
I think this is a great showcase in the art of troubleshooting. There will be cases when there isn't a blog post or youtube video to help you figure out what's wrong. If you learn how to think critically about how things work, you can troubleshoot without the need to go online. Good stuff.
clear cases need to come back in general being able to see internals is so cool
Happy Friday, Joel!
Yeah, I'd love to see a clear case on more printers. Also that's a nice shirt.
Cool! This is why I like to built my printers, you just get a feeling for things like this.
Definitely an idea for someone to make a transparent 3D printer and sell it as a learning tool.
So funny. I just printed these same dolls yesterday! Came out amazing on my a1
Great video and great job on explaining it all.
Thank you!
ThanknYou ! Such a super valuable information. Nice. I am lucky to stumbled upon this video
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, Joel, for yet another example of #PositivePrinting!
Great video showing the troubleshooting process Joel, thanks.
I really want an A1, but they won't be available until may so I might grab an A1 mini to hold me over. I'm at my wit's end with my ender 3 pro. Reliability has been a huge issue.
Joel mate your back in the game buddy nice old skool type of video
print it big print it big
I need that shirt
Something to think about is that the problem MAY have happened BECAUSE the case was transparent. This material might have played a role in the mechanics failing.
Hey! I have the same tool for cleaning up fuzz and little bits of stringing. Works Amazingly.
Thanks!
That's a cool shirt you are wearing.
I have the Bambu A1. Working fine so far, knock on wood. This is a great piece of info, if I run into this problem. Thanks.
and now there is a recall on the hot bed if you have a damage cable lol
Great fix and well made and instructive video.
I just noticed how your wall of open rolls sighed, when you busted open a new one, for a measly 30cm filament :D
I mean, I wanted it FRESH
You can always print a filament cleaner that you put a sponge into and put a few drops of 3 in 1 oil ,this should help in the same way and some filament manufacturers suggest to do this.
Thanks for the video. 2:00 taking that off would hurt, so much. I know, it burns a beautiful imprint and has lasting pain. Lol.
Transparent cases as so cool. We need to get more products with it so we can all better understand how it works. BTW, fixing a Bambu Lab machine with a Prusa lube is... interesting! 😅
YES! Transparent cases are the way to go!
The extreme tastiness of this video was enhanced by the sammich I ate while watching
Joel, Hi! Great trouble shooting video! Thx! BTW, what camera and lighting setup did you use for the super clear closeups of the spring assmbly? Excellent photography!
Thank you! I used an iPhone 15 Pro and the Blackmagic Camera app!
Could’ve at least waited till spring to post this video ;)
I like how he had to open a new spool of plstic to show how the sensor works versus turning around and grabbing from the wall XD
You are so awesome, loved this whole vid and the intent behind it. To me, this vid is a great example of how cool and connected society can be. To me, the 3d community is just a microcosm of society at large. We are a group of doers, creators, tinkerers. Life and living can be so much fun, Mass produced micro stuff is subject to malfunction, understanding how it all goes together and functions empowers us to fix (and improve) stuff... again, a basic tenet of RepRap community. Beyond the concern you note of possibly polluting filament, i wonder about the need for reapplying lube? I.e., lube is usually an ongoing or repeat process? A thought i have on how to make the surfaces more slippery long term, maybe ceramic coat them? idk, i have ceramic coating i used on my car and is makes it so slippery (well, hydrophobic) that water slips off. But the reason is reduced friction.
What was the little torch thing you used at the end, where can we get one.
Good video.
I wonder if i can order a couple of these parts for when i have issues. Had the error "toolhead not reading filament" last night in the middle of a print. Tried some normal troubleshooting then decided to give up. After doing some research, one of the possible solutions was to turn the machine off and then on again. Turns out that was my "fix". But now im concerned that the sensor is on its way out. Just got the printer a week ago. lol.
Clearly we need more translucent printer pieces. It's the only way I can see going forward. (Also it gives old N64 vibes that I love)
Had the same t-shirt :)
0:01 I HAVE THAT SHIRT!
I want that shirt
where could i possible buy this clear part from please
Be interesting to know if the production models are any different. They may have used a plastic which has less friction for that part.
Friend & colleague used your aff link to buy 1, with the 10% off, so will check it out next week.
What about dry lubricant? Can you use a bit of lock/key dry lubricant or a low tech option like a bit of graphite?
That should reduce a problem with a *wet* lubricant.
Since I don’t have one these myself, nor am I an engineer, I don’t know if that would interfere with the magnet or electronics.
with that magnet, meaning its halleffect sensor ?
would be cool if the a1 mini could compensate for filament diameter with it
like calibrate it with 3 known pieces of different sized blanks ( like metal rods ) and then it could detect deviations in filament diameters, and compensate
Thank you Joel! I had exact the same problem but i thought it was the little magnet that was missaligned... i did't know the exact position of the magnet so i encounter many failed prints from the multicolor panda, i also lost the tiny spring and was searching for hours in my room but can't find it so i make a support ticket for bambulab ,hoping they can help and also explain gow to put tje magnet because its moving sometimes in the proces and then there is no connection with filament sensor.. i spend 2 days working on it...i hope this can help people because there is no information (or spare part) what i can see on the internet 😢
Hello. I am an A1 user and I think it gets clogged when printing. The printer becomes clogged in places where filament should be left dotted on the surface. What is the reason of this? Please help
Are you sure it wasn't the spring catching on the plastic? If the hook on the short end of the spring is slightly too long it would catch on the plastic and not push the metal bit in place. If it happens again, you might want to consider this. Good video.
The thing is that a lot of new people getting into printing don't want to be trouble shooting.
i got problems with calibration is not working. it do the calibration then start the print. it is ok at the left side of the bed and the more to the right you get the worse it gets. all the way to the right it will not stick to the bed. bambulab say to fasten 4 screws on the back side of the black thing behind the nozzle. did that but did not help
I can't find the Maker World Doll STL?
Bambu does seem to have some issues with cutting out or forgetting to lube parts entirely lately - there's been a spree of needling bearing failures in P1 and X1 extruders because they we're greased or didn't have near enough - a lot of the AMS first stage feed and retract issues around xmas turned out to be not enough lube on the nylon gears resulting on nylon shavings all in the feeders even with very few hours.
Take note folks, a little bit of lube makes everything more fun.
Hall effect senor filament sensor?
Now to fix the A1 mini purge mechanism, my A1 big works perfectly
Tell me about it. My oldest X1C has 4000 hrs on it and everything on it seems to be wearing out. They’re not nice to work on.
3d printing is troubleshooting! I luv how you say the stuff that others leave out, but noobs don’t know about. That’s “value added”!
If only the had done that with the og ams unit’s…so many first stage feeders to troubleshoot.
Ummm yeah the day this video posts I have the same issue! Thanks, Joel. High five
Welcome! Did this fix your issue?
a little of lub into the axe isn't to much ^^
Where did you get the flame thrower? Or is it like a brulee torch?
It’s a Hacksmith mini Lightsaber
@@3DPrintingNerdOh dear... you have introduced me to something wonderfully dangerous!
@@DougDorman06 YOU ARE WELCOME :)
Now time to make a video solving the problem about nozzle kicking the prints all the time. Your machine is a prototype, just like ours. The "user friendly plug and play machine with automathic calibrations" results to be, another 3d printer like all, or even worst.
Worst? Im not fun of Bambu but despite some bugs that can be fixed its one of the best out of the box printers and I have tried many before this.
I have a love hate relationship with my printers. My A1 mini was crazy reliable until today, where now I cannot get anything to stick to the bed. Ugh…. Feel a bit lost now since it’s not a conventional 3D printer. The lack of tram controls raises doubts if this is a bed level issue.
I love the mechanical aspect of printing. Software isn’t my thing…
….yet
I would love a transparent case on my A1 mini!!!
They should TOTALLY offer it!
Am I the only one that was expecting a little screaming sound effect coming from the print when Joel used the blowtorch?
Do you use some kind of voice AI filter? You sound kinda... robotic since few videos
WOW!!!
Bambu didn't just rush ship a NDA complete printer and AMS?
Formerly Twitter…it’s X, call it X. New premiership. Beyond that, I own a X1C and think the mini was purely to destroy prusa, not really something anyone needed
I actually need to order that whole piece , I broke it trying to remove the tubes… I wish I could just order this clear one?”
3:26 Colorblind checking in, I wouldn't have realized if you didn't say anything 😅
What's that lighter called?
That’s the mini lightsaber from The Hacksmith
It was enough to widen the spring so it would push more🥸🦾
Why does it look like you're filming with an old school PSP? 😆
By Red I mean orange! 😂😂
@3DPrintingNerd could you point to the model of the print please? my niece would love it
It's the "Cute Articulated Voodoo Doll" on makerworld
yaaaay
**Disclaimer - I dont own an A1** Question tho, would applying a small bit of the grease to the axle have achieved the same thing or was it actually rubbing on the side of the housing? And if its rubbing on the housing, would sanding or somehow removing a small bit of material have helped?
Yeah prusa definitely has a more um robust filament sensors. Lol.
does prusa use magnetic sensors?
@@DonsArtnGames yes but instead of a flimsy spring it's a metal ball, makes much stronger.
Quindi mi dici che solo Prusa può aggiustare Bambu ? 😂
Orange is new Red?
Slick fix. 👴
Couldn’t you just spray some Teflon lubricant onto a toothpick or needle head and then place into the level thingy rather than taking part? I see a lot of people doing this and launching the spring to the next dimension.
Yes, but taking things apart is fun :)
@@3DPrintingNerd I guess. But only when it warrants it. Like taking the heads of car to swap your cam to make it phat and lumpy!!
That whole plastic piece doesn't look like a durable part. In my experience, the filament is quite abrasive over time. I'd be surprised if that part doesn't cause more problems,
Nice video, but this shows why 3d printers are still not mainstream.
You could always have drilled a very narrow hole near that push rod and introduced the lubricant direct without removal of spring or arm. Edit - looking at it again, there was no need to take the spring etc out to introduce the grease to where you did!
You wouldn't need to troubleshoot if the company didn't provide a faulty product.
with the myriad of problems this printer has been uncovered to have on the daily basis with public apologies even given from the company recognizing their own faults , it's absolutely ridiculous as someone in a position of authority in the field, that you would not highlight these issues first. Instead you give them good press.
You’re thinking of the A1, not the A1 mini. This is the A1 mini.
@@3DPrintingNerd Considering it's the same company, and their machine has been publicly acknowledged to have potentially life threatening faults by the company itself- don't you think it's irresponsible to not acknowledge this to your audience upfront and foremost as a number one priority instead of reflexively shifting blame to someone bringing it up?
The fact there isn't a word spoken about this from you despite four previous Bambu Labs oriented videos uploaded is concerning, considering your broad reach of impact on the choices people make in this space.
This isn't even touching on Bambu Labs blatant misleading advertising and missing important information on their very own website.
SOVOL's SV06 for example not only has every part listed transparently, but every single part is open-source, which is the polar opposite direction that this company is trying to steer the community.
@@TripTrap1 Per Bambu's statement, the A1 mini does not suffer the same bed cable issues as the A1. We have plans to cover the A1 bed cable issue. Reflexibely shifting blame? Dude, you called out an issue on a different printer. Yes it's the same company.
Agreed - they should have information on their site regarding the A1 and the bed cable.
This line of distinction you're hung up on is minuscule, and irrelevant, in comparison to what business practices lead to this happening that I'm attempting to highlight, and will continue to happen as much as they get overlooked as they become the example other companies follow going forward of profits over transparency. And batting for the company without acknowledging this as arguably the biggest face for the space isn't doing the community any service, it's actively driving the innovation 3D-printing backwards away from what 3D-printing was built on- customize ability.
The thing that drives innovation and interest.
We're talking about a company that is blatantly the iPhone of 3D-printers- and while I only have a extremely small community of people in comparison, I can't in good faith recommend anything from this company to anyone I know due to this.
I can list of several more issues from them to the way their site is setup to ensure a new customer can accidentally purchase the A1 printer alone and then refuse to offer you the MMU unit for the combo price afterwards, or another potentially dangerous issue of the motherboard doesn't have a fan, how their site hosts redirects to scam websites, their extruder gears are plastic and require numerous steps to even maintenance a common filament jam, the unswappable hotend nozzles forcing you to only purchase from them... but all this could be avoided if they were transparent, but they rather go the proprietary route for profits.
THIS is the problem in the space, and it's not arguable.
@@3DPrintingNerd And I might be only a small insignificant commenter on this- I have absolutely no ties to benefit financially from promoting or deplatforming bad ideas that lead to other people making bad decisions in a field I absolutely love. But I don't care who you are or if you're a person I respect- I'm going to call it out where I see it.
That said- I'll utilize this opportunity while I'm potentially still being seen to warn people that TODAY Bambu has issued a recall on all the A1 printers (not the mini).
As if making the distinction between the mini really should be a defense... Like.
If you go to a restaurant you're friend recommends you, and you order the cheese sticks, they serve you a plate with a turd on it, you report back to your friend mad as hell about the restaurant, and your friend goes: "That's just the cheese sticks. Why are you so mad?!"
Nice. Time will tell ... But i can't understand why everyone is doing things (using) complicated (way)??? For application ("transport" of small amount) of grease You can use a needle (small pin). 😉 If this will occur again, then it will confirm, that it is "wrong by design" ... 😐
A needle or a toothpick or anything like that would have worked and I DID NOT EVEN THINK OF THAT at the time.
@@3DPrintingNerd That's clear, because no one can do things at first perfectly / with the best way (including me 🤪) - that is development. 😀
