The best part of this movie was how accurately it depicts Oregon. Like the town in this movie is basically 90% of western Oregon.
Actually it was filmed in Canada, British Columbia Canada
Not once did I see so much as a sliver of sunshine or a patch of blue sky during the entire runtime of this film...Is it any wonder that the suicide rate in the Pacific NW is the highest in the country?
@@Manic_Drone_Idiom I'd eat people too if I never saw the sun.
@@Manic_Drone_Idiom :( yeah it be like that
Canon Mired Idiom The PNW does not have the highest suicide rate in the country. The Rocky Mountain region does.
Just saying Alex's eyebrow lift might rival the Rocks!
Alex is a gem. I donât always agree but him being here is the right thing
He is perhaps the most patient man I've ever seen.
If Alex is bored most likely I'll be bored. I hate to admit it but that Son of a bitch is my spirit animal.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAA
I wanna see him body slam AJ
the native explained the wendigo would be weakest when its feeding, which it was, and thats how she was able to stand against it. Its stronger when its starving and thats how it could attack all those other people,âm it was hungry. i came to see a Wendigo movie and i got one and it was fucking AWESOOMEE
But they didnât do a good job of explaining the rules of the Wendigo - why did the satchels keep him in the attic? Did the satchels keep it in the mines originally? Does seeing the Wendigo cause infection or getting scratched by it? The vague details of it really hindered the effectiveness of the creature. Plus her story did not tie in well enough with Lucasâ struggle
And back to the point of it needing to be satiated to be weak - it ate the first officer that showed up so wouldnât that make it weaker? Wouldnât that have allowed Jesse Plemmons to shoot it? Once again it comes down to poor world building - and yes, I agree the build up was to a massive let down.
@@ANationsHero agree. the concept was cool then it kinda went downhill.. even tho the character looked cool.
Meh not enough wendigo action. Also I wanted to see the face without the dad's face at least one time even if it was dead . wanna see how its eyes are
Watching Alex writhe in his seat when Joe starts saying some stuff that he doesn't agree with; is the main reason I watch this show.
Same! Like @ 3:03
When Joe says "You thought the ending was stupid, or you understood it, like me," I thought Alex was gonna throw him lmaoo

Thatâs some only fans content there. đ
@@leonardwall8290 "You have to have a higher than average IQ to understand this ending. 9/10"

Tha ending fight was probably the weakest part of the movie. The entire time this monster is being built up as this menacing and dangerous creature and then this giant monster puts up basically no fight against this human who just pokes him with a stick a few times. It literally just swipes at her like itâs a cat swatting a fly.
this was 100% what i was telling people who asked me how this movie was xD the ending fight is cringe and destroyed all the feeling of threat, which they built up pretty well.
Dude.. ..... it was so bad.... like beyond retarded. I'm shocked del Toro allowed his name to be attached to that. Fucking joke. It's like they just wanted to end the movie so badly with just a shitty rough draft a 4th grader made. It was beyond poorly written.
That's not the point of a Wendigo
@@OligatorV literally she has a gun and standard trope of losing her weapon needs to find a new one and looks for the closest thing and look a giant stick .
The native guy explains to them that the wendigo is at itâs weakest when itâs feeding, which it was, so thatâs why she was able to kill it pretty easily. But I do agree that it was a pretty underwhelming ending.
One of these days in one of these episodes, Alex will finally punch Joe full force in the face.
Lmaooo
and we will be here to watch it in all of its glory
I mean it is his show but yeah , why have guest if they canât really talk
When we finally saw the wendigo it felt like we were just starting. And how they handled the creature felt underwhelming. But overall movie isnât bad. But could have been better
Tbf, the wendigo was on Meth.
maybe they ran out of money, expensive creatures are expensive to make lol thats the seal of a cheap movie
@@alekpo2000 the director has a history of making awesome movies with awesome monster designs. I donât think thatâs the case. But just writing.
Didnât look like no representation of a wendigo Iâve ever seen
Should have been a bit longer.
I love how they did the monster in this movie. The story was ok but I wish it was a little different. Maybe just another expendable character or two could have made it a little more eventful. I wanted to see the creature in action more. But the ending made the wendigo look like a little bitch anyways lol
Found it a little underwhelming when she just kinda kills it with a low effort
@@3layerdipstack726 I think they went with that ending so that the story didn't end in such a bleak and dark ending like the short story. Maybe that is why it feels not cohesive and too much spectacle.
@@lachancla3723 I would have loved it to end like the short story
Was it any good? Thinking about watching tonight
âA shit sandwich with real good breadâ ~Alex 2021
The book this movie is based on is super creepy and a short, easy read. Highly recommend you all checking it out since it sounds like it was much better than the film. Lots of good tension and eerie atmosphere, I had chills while reading it!
"The Quiet Boy" by Nick Antosca
It was better sadly. They always screw up by adding things the movie doesnt need, like getting the token native american actor to explain the monster for like 30 seconds of screen time.
@@jakeryan2805 seriously!! That was SO off for me, and felt more like an unnecessary, off-shoot cliche than a plot device
@@cordelia177 They always do this it pisses me off. The short story has no native americans in it, and doesnt even once explain what the monster might be, and it was just fine that way!
Movies ruin all suspense and scare when they take time to sit the protagonists down and say "This is the monster, it came from this ancient legend, oh and here is how you beat it ect" No one cares that the monster is a wendigo. You can look up the legend on your own time. The short story is much scarier cause we have no idea what the boy is dealing with, and its just him alone in his house feeding a monster in the basement.
@@jakeryan2805 Agreed. I hate how modern-day horror movies are always explaining the monster/antagonist in their films. They think it somehow makes them scarier with exposition, but really it does the exact opposite - because when you take away the mystery behind something, you make it "understandable", and when something's understood, it becomes defeatable. That's why the fear of the dark is the most prominent fear out there - especially for adults, because it's not actually the darkness that frightens folks, but their inability to know what's there that strikes fear. It's why the fear of spiders and boogeymen are more common in children than adults, because once someone understands how harmless spiders are and how the monster in the closet isn't real, the fear they once had for them diminishes.
It's basically why my most favorite horror movies are Alien (1979) and The Thing (1982) because they don't have an exposition character suddenly show up and explain what the monster is about. The characters in the movie know just as much about the monsters they're fighting as you do, and what they learn about them is done so by trial-and-error and what you are observing alongside them. It's good horror and movie-making done right.
@@denneyalexander2115 Spot on. Here's hoping next season there are some good horror films that keep the tension without ruining it.
The Wendigo is one of my favorite monsters, so I was super excited to see the movie. However, the second and third acts ruined the film for me. I love the creature design because itâs Guillermo del Toro working on it. However, while I do care for the teacherâs past since I used to be abused, I didnât care for her role in the film and dragging her baggage throughout the film. I think there need to be more works about the Wendigo and the Skinwalkers.
After the bit about the hole in the floor, I thought they'd make use of it in the final scenes, but they didn't
The message is that she was in therapy and was working through her issues while her brother was a tortured soul that kept it all inside.
Remember how he told her "you don't know what he did to me" and she dismissed him. But it turns out the brother kept a lot of darkness inside hence he was corrupted by the Wendigo in the end.
I still think *spoiler alert* that until dawn is the best wendigo depiction so far
Itâs the true depiction. Wendigos in the original tales are said to be tall corpse like humanoids with no lips as they ate them, gaunt/emaciated bodies, very little to no hair.
I think Lucas dad in the beggining before he turned into the pop culture wendigo was a good depiction
@@asherthemad3704 I think they also get mixed up with the Wachuge(sp?) which another Native American creature that is very closely related to the Wendigo. They share many of the same traits (propensity towards cannibalism, large size, relation to ice or winter and greedy people, etc.) But where they differ is that they have more animalistic physical traits and they seem to be a bit more farther north (like in Canada.) I don't know if they are considered to have antlers because information doesn't seem to be as widespread on them, but if they do, I could see where people mistake one for the other.
@Jaxon Mummy That's what I've heard too. I think one depiction is the Wendigo being a 50 ft tall naked man with red eyes, sharp teeth and claws. Another is not so giant sized but they are covered in matted fur, with sharp teeth, red or yellow eyes, and claws. Someone on another site years ago said one version had antlers, but they didn't list or the tribe that had that depiction. Maybe it might have been the very closely related Wachuge(sp?) but I don't know enough about either to say 'Yeah these have the antlers.'
The design wasn't too good though. Antlers monster design looked great
Using the Wendigo as a representation of addiction in the family, the opioid crisis, victims either coping with & succumbing to/breaking the chain of abuse (and the possibilities of finally reaching the point of healing) was 100% on-point and I'm finally glad someone else has also experienced it this way, because it hit me super-hard on multiple levels due to these links.
Thats part of what freaked my out so badly about this film. I saw the allegory of drug addiction in it right away and it forced me to look at my own self.
@@majicogarcia8417 Itâs never easy to look inward with such ferocity my friend, but I can promise you that if you are struggling, you _can_ break free of the awful downward spiral and not only live a full life in sobriety - but youâll also eventually be able to forgive yourself and help others to find the same peace.
Thereâs no drug in the world that even comes *close* to that feeling you get when you help someone else who is struggling in addiction/alcoholism.
You guys have a really good vibe in this review, even with higher-than-usual disagreement, the flow of conversation was very listenable and enjoyable. I like to see you all not only giving each other time to completely voice thoughts, but taking regular turns at passing the stick and having a genuine back-and-forth. Keep up the great work, guys.
Agree..I love these guys
Couldn't agree more. đ
To me, killing the child, that was also a victim, could be like killing her past. She killed the big monster, her abuser, but the hardest is to kill the traumatic child still in her. It makes sense to me, I suffered from abuse before. And let me tell you, your traumas look like a huge fucking monster that you have to take one on one. You just don't have the choice.
As for the the teacher, I thought it made sense seing how she could see abuse when everybody closed their eyes on it. This is a very harsh reality that some people will see abuse and overlook it because nobody can do something. I think the abuse metaphor was very well played and was an important part. And for the Native... Wasn't it good ? I mean, Wendigo is a Natie legend, it should be told by a Native, plus it gives some exposition to these communities, not a lot, but still.
The only big criticism I had seeing it was that showing the monster as a monster takes away from the horror of the dad during his transformation. The fact that he was human was more horrifying and more realistic because abuses are committed by humans, not by monsters. Drugs and violence and rapes are not done by monster we can just kill, it is done by humans we trust and love and this is the most scary thing.
Allegory of killing the weak child following the beast dad is lame. Allegorys work well when they are secondary and complementary. Not enforced.
@@robschanaynay3500 but maybe it was killing a future abuser and put an end to the cycle of violence, since the second kid wasn't able to escape from it.

It can feel tropy at the end. But it does make sense. She has been through a living hell with her past trauma. Combined with her motivation to protect a kid. It makes sense why she would be brave enough face off with a monster. The third act felt a bit quick though.
Can't wait for the sequel: Hooves.
The antlers creature gets a job as a Twitch mod.
That's where satyrs, centaurs or the Goatman of Maryland comes in. ;D
"Here's what happened there. Alex" ;D Movie Ravenous and TV show Supernatural - both had Wendigos - their storylines, were all about a cannibalistic creature, and how the transformation came about. I guess, Werewolves and Wendigos are quite difficult monsters to make interesting, 2 hour long movies? Once you get past the special effects, the 'horror' part is repeated over?
Seeing the title and monster from a TV snippet, I thought this was gonna be a cool Christmas horror movie like Krampus, but kinda sucks it isnât that lol
The fight between her and the Wendigo was absolutely ridiculous. It swiped at her like an idiot and it did slowly, I was saying what is going on here this is stupid!
Same... weak fight
HIS CHEST IS GLOWING FOR NO REASON?!
Dude, Alex, the fucking heart is MADE OF FIRE.
So how did the first guy die, was it another windigo? Also how does the orange spores work that infects them, like why did it infect the cop brother but not Lucas
When AJ mentioned Relic I thought the 90's monster movie and I was confused since it has zero subtext. Awesome movie though.
I always love these videos, but any time Joe brings up the sub text in this one I get major COPIUM vibes hahaha
I feel like they shouldâve had MORE Wendigo, which is strange because usually with horror movies its the opposite. But yeah the ending is extremely underwhelming, like this huge hulking beast who killed cops and grown men, and gravely injured another cop, is just killed by this random women who just learned about the Wendigo. The main character was also lacking A LOT. I feel that if the native man was the main character, or just a native person, the movie would not only have much needed native representation, but the fact that a native man is the one who kills the Wendigo would make much more sense than a random girl who just learned what a Wendigo is.
Ohhh! Alex dropping that "Time to Kill" fire đ„

SPOILERS
I personally have soo many complaints about this movie that I feel like itâs not even worth recommending to anyone. What is this movie for? What is itâs story thats its trying to tell us? What are we supposed to take away after watching it?
Iâve been looking forward to this movie since before covid myself, and I just watched it today. Needless to say, I donât like it. Not saying i hated it, or that it didnât keep me entertained and looking forward to see what happens next or anything, but that this movie to me, literally flopped. Felt like they built up a story and didnât no which direction to go in and so what we ended up with is a movie about personal problems, a somewhat monster, family and a terrible ending in which none of these thing Iâve mentioned ever connect to one another effectively.
Ask me what this movie is about and I wouldnât know what to say. I canât say its a monster movie because the people who died were minimum and they died in away where they were literally asking to be killed.
The teacher projected her family problems onto the movie itself making it seem like the kids father is a bad guy and making the entire movie feel like we should have pity for this malnutritioned kid.
The kid literally changed character at the very end of the movie from being all about family to letting his family get murdered. Just why?? When?? Where was it that made this kid have a change of heart to literally backstab his family??
Why was the teacherâs brother begging her to take him with her to the mine at the end of the film after heâs been injured?? He did absolutely nothing. Why was e there?????????
Why wasnât the teacher one shot by the wendigo?? Literally everyone in the film was one shotted by it. But by all means not this teacher, nope she has the knowledge/training/techniques to take this thing on and beat itâŠI am lying btw, she has none of those things yet she still fucking wins?? Tf
And the biggest complaint, why tf did the kid keep going to school?? Yeah the teacher projected saying âits a cry for helpâ but the kidâs character saids otherwise. Nothing about the kids character says âhelp me.â He is literally cleaning up murder to protect his family. Lol
Sorry for the spoilers but for someoneâs whoâs been waiting a long time for a good movie, this really disappointed me. We literally learned nothing about the teacher backstory but there were two jump scares where she screamed out of panic because of her childhood. What the fuck happened to her?? We learn a little bit but why should I care? How does this help the overarching story?? Iâll tell you how, it doesnât. It was half ass. If it was better utilize I wouldnât be complaining.
And then her brother says to her âyou dont know what father did to meâ and Iâm all like âyeah me either, what did he do??â
Soo much family problems to our main characters but nothing is explained, let alone shown to us besides bits and pieces that leads nowhere.
Anyways more importantly, WHERE THE FUCK IS THE WENDIGO THAT STARTED THIS ENTIRE MOVIE?????!?!
Seriously where the fuck is he or she?? What is their story?? Lol I swear this film could of been sooooo much better if they just told a straight forward story. But it doesnât, it wants to tell a bunch of different stories that fail to connect in my eyes.
why was this movie made? What message are they trying to tell us? What am I supposed to take away from watching this because this story tells me nothing.
Honestly i would of been fine if the kid stabbed the teacher. He should have, it fits his character. He wants to help his family. But on top of forcing the teacher to kill the wendigo(literally wtf, how?? What makes her more special than a trained cop who was one shotted mind you) they also force a happy ending where the kid changes sides last minute for no reason whatsoever.
Yeah I get it, his side was the bad side, but you canât just make someone go from the bad side to the good side for no reason and expect not to have any complaints. Its forced. This movie is forced.
Why is the movie about a wendigo? He could of been a zombie and the story wouldnât have been ANY different. So what story are they trying to tell us? What are we supposed to take away.
Anyways Iâm done venting. If you want a way better movie to watch that is somewhat similar due to its monster, I highly recommend âThe Ritualâ
The Witcher S#2 & The Wheel of Time trailer reactions Joe? đ€đđ€
As far as Wendigo movies go there will never be one better than 1999's "Ravenous" with Robert Carlyle and Guy Pearce.
I gotta check it out!
@@3ssenti4L Definitely do, and what's more is that the movie was inspired by a real life event that took place in the late 19th century in Colorado.
Fun fact this film was not originally delayed by the pandemic but by Disney after they acquired Fox and after viewing the film was bewildered and beside themselves about what to do with the film. I have a feeling we have an Empty Man situation of an unfinished film that derails a lot before it ends. I still enjoyed my time with it.
Cool bit of trivia I heard somewhere is that this movie was filmed in a town called Hope in Canada which is the same place the first Rambo movie was shot.

Well this ain't it.... hopefully the guy that directed sicario, wind river etc. Does his own take on the genre.
The reviews for this movie are as depressing as tbe actual movie
This film is based on the story "The Quiet Boy", written by Nick Antosca.
This will be the third time for Jesse Plemons playing the role of a sheriff, he previously played a sheriff in American Made (2017) and Game Night (2018).
The first film directed by Scott Cooper since Crazy Heart (2009) not to have Masanobu Takayanagi as the director of photography as well as Cooper's first digitally shot film.
Jay Brazeau, who plays a doctor in the film, was also in the similarly-named 2013 film "Horns."
The film features a 'Wendigo', a cannibalistic creature of Native American (Algonquin) folklore.
A Wendigo is also featured in Stephen King's Pet Sematary, however, is largely unseen and in the background influencing the characters actions.

Also, I think the movie would've been more engaging if we got more time with the dad before he became infected, so we get more of an emotional connection with him, sort of like The Fly.

Saw this movie this past weekend. We were the only ones there. Sad because me and my fiance loved this movie. Great Wendigo movie for once they got it right.
@nwo yeah we went Halloween weekend at this big shopping center where everyone was there for kids trick or treating. But the galaxy theater we went too had electric recliner seats.
Joe is excited he finally understood a movie subtext that Alex didn't.
One of the things that left me a bit confused by the end of this movie was the fact that shouldn't there still be another wendigo lurking around out there? The monster we follow in this movie is the dad after he's transformed. But in the beginning he and his meth buddy got attacked in the mine by one too. So even with his death and that of his son that would still leave the initial creature from the beginning am I wrong? Unless I missed something I think that might be a plot hole.
there was that one body that they found mauled in the woods, which i think was before the father completely lost it, so that couldâve been the other guy? or he died trying to get out, i think they left that up to our interpretation on purpose :0
@@elliepetrova6940 The body that was found in the woods by the ex sheriff was the dads meth cook buddy. The film just kind of forgets about the initial monster from the beginning.
What I understood is that once the wendigo is killed it possesses someone else (as we see with the kid and the brother at the end) so I believe that the father killed the initial wendigo and was possessed Afterwards and becomes the main Wendigo of the movie. Though I'm not entirely sure
@@elioorozco8185 Even if the father did kill it there would still be a body of the dead wendigo but there isn't one.
@@StuartEaston23 true that, but remember they did find an antler in the mine showing there is still some remnants of the last wendigo. The father could've done something with the body. All speculation still though.
For a great monster movie with an actual interesting message, watch Tumbad, the setting, the plot, the monster is fantastic.
Alex looks like heâs thinking what drugs is Joe on today most of the video đđ
Despite some of the hero saves the day bs at the end this was a solid movie that touched on allota disadvantages of societal tropes like dealing with a difficult and sick parental figure, drug abuse, social services, the failing school system, authorities and the consequences of mankind defiling nature to the point where nature starts to defile back. Beside the cheesy ending the movie was ok the creature design and tone was very enthralling.
If they would have gone with the bleak ending like the short story, I think this movie would have done better, or maybe later on it will be remembered even better, because the cheesy ending does actually detract from the story. The ending would have been super dark and bleak so...
@@lachancla3723 I think the non existent police force of the town shouldâve went down to the mine with a gang of rifles had a shoot out with the thing weakened it then had the boy stab it in the heart, I can not fathom how a 130 to 140 pound school teacher was able to kill a 12 foot blood thirsty monster that literally killed and ate a bear moments before.
This movie was extremely unfaithful to the source material and it gave too much explanation about the Wendigo. The Wendigo aspect was left kind of ambiguous in the book as was the abuse.
Legend has it, Alex is still attempting to make a full point without interruption.
Just saw this movie! I agree. It starts off very strong but then it falls into the cliche sci fi monster tropes towards the end. I loved the atmosphere and eerieness that was similar to another film like it (The Ritual).
Ive been waiting for this movie for years as well. There were a lot of delays. Can't wait to watch it!
I go to the movies exclusively through you guys and I'm loving it đđ
They're going to have a fun time with that new paranormal movie
There we go! That's Alex's T-Shirt! "DO YOU GET IT! DO YOU GET IT! I'm sorry, DO YOU GET IT!"
Watch the movie game night before seeing this. The cop from game night is the brother lol
This is the only movie I've been looking forward to for so long!
I just saw it. I expected better with Del Toro's involvement. Lots of holes in the dialogue and un-fleshed characters.
@@NotQuiteEpic i just saw it too and im pretty disappointed

It was really good

Why doesn't the AJS subscriber count increase? Its been on 3.27 ever since I subscribed in late 2019 and has actually decreased to 3.26M. As a big fan I would like to see the channel growing more đ„
Yeah they really deserve more recognition
I feel ya dude. Honestly I think the biggest reason is how few "Angry Reviews" are uploaded these days (referring to game reviews) his older reviews would get millions upon millions of views, now for the most part they can barely break a million or two. I love Joe, OJ and Alex and will always watch them but I doubt we will ever see this channel hit 3.3 million, it seems like the channel has peaked.
Cause they don't review games that much anymore
@@awesome9174 there arenât many games out to review tho

Joe was really proud that he understood the surface-level, low-hanging fruit subtext in this. Well done, Joe.
Why be mean. Doesn't cost anything to be nice.

Angry "I liked it more than you guys" Joe
Wendigo can only be killed by fire, flares easily catch fire, hence the wendigo is scared of the flare.
Joe: I get it, you might not, but its dumb either way.
Alex: We all get it, it's all just dumb.
OJ: Eh.
I had high hopes for this film!đ© The worst part for me was when they all kept walking into that shed and the Wendigo was just hiding somewhere out in the open and kept stabbing them from behindâŠ
I was very excited for this film but after it ended I was left dissatisfied
The woman in this from Felicity is better in the alien movie... Dark Skies ( Keri Russell )
I get the whole premise of the movie and the meanings behind it, but what about the wendigo that attacked the father and his friend at the beginning, where did he dissapear?
It would seem to me that if the movie turned into a mess or got worse as it went on and it had started with some silly message either veneered on or just beneath the surface about *something entirely unrelated* then the message got in the way of the story and, ultimately, ruined it. Perhaps the writer/director had no clue as to how to tie the two together, or how to continue on with the message while simultaneously making it a horror film about a wendigo... and that's pretty important, if you ask me. What's the point in a message if it ruins, stalls or stonewalls your movie? What's the point in a horror movie if a message takes more priority over any part of the movie itself? I would imagine that, in most cases, it is best to stick with your movie and what your movie is supposed to be about and to deliver an *experience*, not a *message*. I think Alex nails it.
