Are ellipticals good for you?

  • Matt and Josh answer a question from Upright fan Mike. Do we like ellipticals? Do we think that's the best way to get cardio in?
TL;DR: We don't like ellipticals that much. We'd much prefer people prioritize building some strength before battering themselves on cardio machines that promote strange movement patterns.

It's based on cross country skiing. Arms and legs plus uses core quite a bit. If high resistance it's an awesome cardio challenge. I mix it up with stairs, cycling, running, swimming and weights. When your goal is fitness and not only jacking up your body it's a helpful tool to keep pushing your limits.

The Elliptical is the BEST CARDIO machine in terms of calorie burning, I normally don't write comments but this was terrible advice/information. Almost the entire body is being worked so you have a greater calorie burn. I have been a competitive endurance runner for over a decade and I know its impossible to burn as many calories as I do on the elliptical for the same amount of time. Make it fun, depending on your feet position and hand position a person is able to focus more on different muscle groups.

As a heavy person, I can get a VASTLY better workout using the elliptical than running. Specifically because I can't run much at this point without obscene foot pain. You simply have to get the resistance up on an elliptical. I know running burns more calories and can be a better workout, and I do go try for the occasional run to increase my ability there.
Also, the way the guy on the left is mocking the elliptical's motion is not how your body moves on one.
I'm not about to argue that it's the best at anything, but I quite enjoy it as long as I have the resistance set to max.

👏🏽 u can burn a lot of calories on elliptical. Who cares if u burn an extra 200 - 300 calories more by running. A couple 100s calories burned is nothing compared to the 1,000s calories we get through food.

I think there is a place for an elliptical if you have an injury that prevents you from running. For me when I had a stress fracture in my shin I found the elliptical a good break from riding the bike. I could burn about 90% as many calories in an hour on the elliptical as I could in an hour running.

  • @IntoTheOutside000
    @IntoTheOutside000 Před 2 lety +4

I would have agreed till I actually tried it at a high resistance. It's walking up a serious incline and I would argue it engages more muscles in a healthier posture than the stationary bike. It can't replace running for running's sake but for the sheer purpose of burning calories while minimizing fatigue from strength or other training. The stimulus to fatigue ratio is excellent and can be made intense enough to challenge anyone.

My elliptical has been helping quite a bit. I was diagnosed with RA about five years ago. I tried to jog and run like I used to, but it would cause strain on all my joints, not just my knees and ankles. I know this video is five years old but like you stated in the video, it has it uses for a certain group of people. If someone is to increase the resistance on an elliptical, it provides a decent workout.

I sometimes use my street-strider elliptical bike as my warm up. When I had a meniscus tear the elliptical was my lifeline until I could run again. I agree it does not replicate running exactly and does not burn as many calories. I used to average 8 miles a day. I can't do that much anymore so I supplement with other types of cardio. In a perfect world all running surfaces would be dirt as opposed to concrete,
Also some places its not safe to run outside when the ground is covered with ice especially when you're already injured.
I a perfect world I'd be doing the same thing I was at 25, unfortunately life's not fair like that.
I don't think this video did viewers a great service. Strongly recommend you give it another shot.

I injured my knee about 15 years ago. I believe it was a small meniscus tear but I wasn't very attentive when they gave me the MRI results and they also weren't very clear about it. Anyways I remember having knee pain and my doctor just telling me to stop running. So I just gave in and used an elliptical machine at gyms as my warmup. Fast forward about 14 years and I took it upon myself to search up rehabilitation exercises for the knee and took the approach you guys are talking about in regards to strengthening the muscles and stabilizers. I also changed my running gait and footwear (heel striker and padded shoes > forefoot/midfoot striking and barefoot/minimalist shoes). I am extremely happy with my progress. The only time I ever have knee issues now is when I go into a deep pancake stretch (which was how I injured it in the first place). Before it hurt to just put my foot on the gas when driving or running without padded shoes (and even then it would still hurt). I'm so happy and relate to your feelings in regards to people thinking avoidance is the way to go to protect the joints. There is misinformation out there and people are often steered in the wrong direction. I know I was. Keep up the good work.

this video was terrible... elliptical machines give you a good range of motion throughout your entire body, push and pull in your arms, forward and backward motion in your legs, core is used for stability. how can any professional say walking or stationary bike is better than elliptical!?? entirely opinion based and lacks statistics. don't allow this video to sway your decision on which form of cardio to choose.

@@user-rx7th9hr4l of course it's not creating a serious burn, but it does get more muscle groups involved in the exercise. Especially at a higher resistance setting. ( Actually riding a real bike is likely to involve more muscle groups as well ) What I dislike about this video is how they completely dump on a very good option for someone to burn calories. For someone overweight or otherwise sedentary almost any form of cardio is a good choice.

I'm so confused at this video advice... why make fun of the elliptical? It's obvious the elliptical pedals won't translate to bipedal motion on a solid ground surface. Why would it? There will be a time in your life when you start having much more negative effects of impact exercises than benefits. You can't fight aging and the degradation of your joints after hitting 30. So be grateful that the elliptical exists.
