  • Cardio is one of the most common things people train in the gym. That said, there are many dumb forms of cardio workouts that you should avoid if you not only want to see your best results but stay safe when doing it. In this video, I cover the 5 worst forms of cardio and show you how to make each of them better.

    Battle ropes are a new way to get in your conditioning and cardiovascular training, but only if you do them right. They aren’t called battle ropes for no reason. If you want to get the most out of this workout tool you are going to have to go to battle with the ropes. In other words, you need to attack the workout with a super high intensity level. It is ok if you wind up cutting down the amount of time you spend swinging the ropes if the trade off is that you are working harder. Work harder for a shorter period of time and you will see more efficient results from your workouts.
    Treadmills, bikes and ellipticals are three common forms of cardio that get used every single day in the gym. Their popularity should not be confused with them being the best thing you can do however. In fact, the postural mistakes that are not only encouraged but somehow possible on these machines makes them a very poor alternative to the equivalent activity that you could be doing outside. Not just that, but nobody would ever argue that walking on a stair climber is somehow harder than walking real flights of stairs. Get outside and away from the machines and you will see a more effective carryover in your training.
    Tabata is also a very popular form of cardio. The problem here is twofold. The exercise selection for using your Tabata as well as the fact that you need to train at a much higher intensity during your interval is key to the success as it was originally designed. The Tabata interval is 20 seconds of activity followed by 10 seconds of rest. You repeat this for a total of 8 rounds or 4 minutes. The key however is that your high activity levels must be near your max heart rate. If you choose an exercise that is either too easy or takes too long to ramp up and down from, you will be costing yourself the major benefit of the cardio protocol.
    The same can be said for poorly designed HIIT training. If your idea of HIIT is that you perform a max effort lift with a conditioning exercise interspersed, you are going to wind up either hurting yourself or at the very least getting submaximal results for both of the goals you are training for. Instead, focus either on strength training or cardio but don’t try to do both in the same workout. Again, this is a very popular way to train these days but popularity does not mean safe or beneficial.
    Finally, jogging is a very common form of cardio. The issue with jogging is that it is smack dab in the middle of sprinting and walking, and often takes on the worst traits of each. If you are overweight and in need of a good cardio workout, a slow long duration walk would be good for keeping it easy on your joints while still allowing enough time to burn sufficient calories at a lower energy output. Sprinting is a bit harder on the joints but can really ramp up the effort and get you a better workout faster. Jogging has the impact of running but is usually not long enough to sustain the benefits of the walking.

      Could you please explain your jogging into more depth ? this seems to be entirely wrong or you are talking about it in a different context. You gain so much more improvement when you train in zone 2. How else would you train for a marathon ? By only sprinting ?

    Marathon runner here. Jogging is completely necessary to develop cardiovascular endurance. It all depends on what you are training for. I include sprints (speed work) in my program, but even for that I rarely do anything less than 400m intervals. The kind of sprints Jeff showed will barely do anything for cardiovascular development; you'll develop strength an anaerobic systems much more.
    I have to completely agree about getting outside whenever possible though.

      Studies have found that prolonged jogging actually strengthens the knee and joggers rarely face leg related issues later in life.

      @@username8644 yeah I've had shin splints too and its sooo painful. I had to give myself some rest.
      But even after that I just love running or jogging.
      Running can get very very intensive. Proper warm-up and stretching is necessary.

    Jogging is actually quite beneficial for improving cardiovascular conditioning and VO2 max as well as endurance if you are training in a Zone 2 range.

      @@joshuataylor3550 Not really, it very much depends on what you are trying to achieve. I am currently training for 10k races. My program consists of 3 easy days (zone 2 - 1 short followed by 80m sprints and 2 long easy runs 10+ kms), 1 medium day (z3 tempo usually 8km) and 1 hard (z3 to z4 intervals, hills). Most runners do a lot of Z2 training; in the running context it means I can chat with my running partner the whole way.
      What Jeff is saying isn't necessarily wrong either, it's more aimed at people who are 'jogging' only occasionally and poorly who would be better off just doing sprints.

      @@joshuataylor3550 depends on what you're trying to achieve. Highest calorie burn per unit of time? Yes. Conditioning, total calorie burn? No. Reason mostly being, unless you're extremely fit already you simply can't keep up high intensity for very long, your body won't be able to keep up. Applying this to running, if you run at high intensity not only will your cardiovascular system struggle to keep up if you're not an experienced runner, you'll also do a number on your joints and you'll interfere with recovery from lifting. For most most people, regular low/moderate intensity cardio over longer periods of time is better if for no other reason than you'll actually be able to do it and keep doing it.

      @@joshuataylor3550 No, it's not. If I look at most elite endurance athletes, they train mostly at low intensity with only a small fraction of their training volume at high intensity. High volume is the name of the game. This isn't even specific to runners, who tend to have a larger fraction of time devoted to high intensity than CC skiers and cyclists (this is due to running being higher impact, limiting maximum volume before injury. Past 40 miles a week, injury rates go up rapidly.).
      The pure HIIT camp hasn't won an Olympic 5K since the 1960s.

      I've never trained for long distance running but once a year for four years I had to run a 3 mile due to a fitness test, and I ran it in 19 minutes or less every time. I achieved this by doing short intervals of sprints with maximum effort.

    This is a perfect example of exercising for aesthetics vs exercising for health and fitness. I switched from my HIIT routine to this program. While it did make me bigger and stronger, I lost all of my athleticism. I became slower, less agile, less explosive, tired out faster and my resting heart rate increased quite a bit.
    I LOOKED better with this approach but felt worse. So I've since switched back to a more holistic fitness routine.

      Yeah, I think Jeff has a lot of good advice when it comes to strengthening certain muscle groups and preventing injury, but his cardio advice seems to be geared towards body sculpting. His advice on posture correction is helping me immensely, but I'm also trying to train for 10Ks so cutting out jogging is ridiculous for me

      Neither jogging nor static stretching before a workout is necessarily problematic; context is key.
      Yes, jogging is hard on the joints, it's not the most efficient way to burn calories in terms of cal/unit of time, and it can slow down muscle growth or bring about muscle atrophy. But high intensity workouts are difficult to sustain, can also be hard on the joints and can also bring about muscle atrophy. If building aerobic capacity is your goal, a moderate-intensity activity like jogging is indispensable. In fact, jogging constitutes something like 80% of all elite marathoners' workouts. Cf. Zinner, C. (2016). Training Aspects of Marathon Running. In *Marathon Running: Physiology, Psychology, Nutrition and Training Aspects* (pp. 153-171). Springer International Publishing.
      Yes, static stretching cold can cause injury and static stretching pre-weightlifting can decrease power output. But static stretching post-warmup and pre-workout is arguably preferable to no stretching. Static stretching pre-workout is also indispensable if tight muscles are impeding proper form (e.g. stretching the hip adductors or achilles pre-squat) or bringing about injury (e.g. stretching the quads before a jumping-intensive sport) and dynamic stretches don't get the job done.

      I work at walmart and they have figured out that even walking for 10 minutes is too much for a lot of people. we have like 10 mobility carts with only maybe 100ish people in the store at any time.

      This channel is the number one information source for the healthy development of the body. I am still amazed by or terrified by how a huge percentage of other specialists harm people with their programs and lack of knowledge. Jesse recently said we have epidemy of people with bad posture, I say its already pandemic state. Literally, no one that I know has the right posture... You may be jacked you may be ripped but you slouching or limbing, this is sad. Have you ever met anyone being able to stand up from the floor in a squat position without the support of their hands?

    I have an issue with your jogging part. Jogging is aerobic, sprinting is anaerobic. They are both good. And jogging is something you can do anywhere and you need one thing, good shoes, thats it. On vacation and want cardio, go for a jog. Hour lunch break, go for a jog. Jogging has its benefits for heart health and weight loss, as long as its used as part of a strength training. You use the Rock as an example for the ropes, he also jogs :-)

    I actually saw the most results when I stopped jogging and started doing interval sprints. I'd sprint the straight parts of my local track and walk the curves. I'd do that for at least 30min or (if I had the time) 3 miles.

    All I did for cardio was run on a treadmill and I’m Ranger-qualified and finished first out of 162 Soldiers during a 12-mile road march. It’s because of machine-based cardio that I am far more than what my peers could ever hope to be.

      I stupidly signed up for a marathon while deployed and didn't have access to running space. We did have an elliptical though. I would be on that thing for hours.

    The worst advise in terms of cardio and running. Run zone 2 out of a 5 zone model and run MORE. Do HIT running every time and you'll burn out in a week or two and end up injured. Theres a reason actual endurance athletes train mostly in the lower zones. It builds ENDURANCE which is aerobic cardio. Hit is anaerobic, and should only be use a month out from a race as its very hard on your body and very hard to recover from. You can't do 5 days of hit / anaerobic work in a week. Again you'll end up injured and over trained very quickly. Yes, if your just getting started walking is the best place. If your leading up to a race and already have an aerobic base then hit work is what's needed. For everyone in between who's looking for cardio (meaning aerobic) than "jogging" or running slow and getting in the miles is what's needed. This video is super misleading and pretty much incorrect on this aspect. Of course you can do what he says but you won't ever be super fast. Just over trained and injured with zero aerobic base.

      Think you have misunderestood. You are seeing this as a 'runner', so obviously jogging makes sense. For those who want some cardio as part of a weight loss and/or strength and fitness program, jogging is one of the worst options. At no point is he saying anybody should do HIT sprints 5 days a week, not sure where you are getting that.

      Very true. People really sleep on aerobic exercise in the muscle world but back when I was a distance runner and wrestler I can't tell you how much cardio helped me against larger guys. 80% of my cardio was not high intensity but I could go for days. When you can run a mile under 5 minutes, people are always shocked how well that carries into exerting yourself on the mat. Its true it doesn't make you big though.

    I've had two hip replacement surgeries. Any High impact activity involving my feet slamming to the ground is out. No running, jumping, none of that. It'll wear the joint out prematurely. My orthopedic surgeon & my chiropractor told me to walk, so that's what I do. I started with 15 minutes, which was difficult because of chronic back pain. After weeks of rehabilitating my back pain, piriformis syndrome, I'm up to an hour walk at a brisk pace. Now I'm conditioning my boi-mechanical health to optimal with a plethora of stretches & exercises & will be joining a gym when this COVID business is over. I'm looking forward to that.

      @@davidleon6505 I developed Avascular necrosis of the hip joints. It's a severe restriction of blood supply to the joint that kills off the bone tissue of the femoral head causing it to collapse into the socket. This makes walking extremely difficult & painful. Avascular necrosis has a genetic component. My oldest brother had to have both his hips replaced & my middle brother has had one done as well.

    Finally, something you said I disagree with. I've been doing HIIT workouts since November. When the gym was still open, I would do 3 sets of box jumps mixed with 3 sets on the ground (pushup claps, mountain climbers, and hip flexors from a plank position. With no gym, I've converted the box jumps to jump rope alternate legs for 30 seconds. I always get past 100, usually past 120, with a PR of 148. So, perhaps your right after all, cause I'm not milking the jump roping. After about a month, my dog has stopped barking at me while jumping rope. My body has responded splendidly. I like all your videos, but my favorite is the "8 exercises I wish I'd been doing all along." After doing a 20-25 minute HIIT, I incorporate 2 exercises from that video along with ab wheel from my feet. Then stretch/cooldown. By the end of HIIT, I'm flinging sweat all over my 40-50 degree garage. Anyway, thanks for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with us; it's been greatly appreciated, especially for the past 6 weeks.

    Love Jeff's video, but I feel like I do have to take issue here. I love my elliptical, it's been been a great way to get great cardio consistently at all times of the year. More importantly it's been critical to the progress I've made from my starting weight in spite of ankle issues. He's 100% correct about lazy form but it seems to me like having the correct form is important with all forms of resistance training so why should this be different? I'd love to see Jeff specifically coach viewers on proper elliptical use. Regardless of your age or starting fitness level, you can get an intense workout in limited minutes with very, very little impact.

      Yes, I agree. I love my Rogue Echo bike. I generally enjoy watching these videos, but the real object of this one seems to me to be provocative, to get people going as they say.
      The comment that "machine based cardio will never replicate what it actually feels like when your body is out in space doing these activities for itself" goes for absolutely everything that happens in a gym. I mean when you pick up something heavy in real life it's going to be a big awkward shape like a fridge or motorcycle or something . . . you're never going to come across something that looks like a barbell with weights attached.
      I might not be able to give you tips on working out, but I can help you with words. If you want to be rude about everyone making an effort to get fit at the gym, don't mess about with these far fetched examples. I'd just say what you want to say. It's still rude as heck, but a lot more efficient to say it this way. I'd applaud that.

      Another elliptical user here. I've got a bad hip and my doctor recommends the elliptical over jogging since it's less impact on the joints. However, some of the other commenters have made important points - we're probably not professional or even amateur athletes like the folks that particular comment is being aimed at. (I'm just another formerly obese person trying to get fit, myself.) For those who are actually training for sport performance, non-machine cardio probably is for the best. And my trainer has, in fact, forced me to do battle ropes instead of machine cardio for the last month. It's a lot harder than it looks...

      I sometimes do CrossFit workouts. I do a mixture of everything. I have however seen the effects of Crossfit on the regulars at a gym I frequent. The ones who stick with it truly transform into very athletic bodies, and they are way way more capable physically over time. People also tend to not have disproportionate bodies like most regular gym goers. I don’t like the way Crossfitters come across sometimes in attitudes. I also don’t particularly think Crossfit games is tech “games”. People train to compete, they don’t train to...train. It’s weird. That being said, Crossfit has a lot of benefits if done with proper form.

    As for those locomotion stages I feel like he forgot about "running"
    Sprinting is absolute max speed, and if you're doing long distances like in cross country, you're not going to be able to keep up your maximum speed for an hour.
    You don't wanna go slow and jog, but you don't want to wear yourself out too soon by sprinting either

    I'm not able bodied and most people with my health conditions (genetic) are on disability. I refuse and push myself crazy hard everyday and have been blessed with ppl who help me do tje things I can't. For me doing cardio on machines really helps because I can't do it "perfectly". To each their own 🤷🏼‍♀️ i get it done the best I possibly can and get complimented on my fit body quite a bit.

Socially awkward people worship him because he can "power up" for entire episodes and fly through the air and teleport and shit. It's really awkward to talk to some of these fans. I've had one explain to me how he can "power up" and make himself strong. I've met more than one person who thinks humans CAN fly because Goku can.     As a tall person that had a leg injury, and after years of training has joint pain from running and playing basketball, I learned the easiest form of cardio, and the most enjoyable is hopping on the mountain bike, and riding all over the neighborhood communities.
    You don't have to go uphill, or drive into insane hills, or down them. Riding straight for about an hour or even two will feel great on your body, without damaging your joints, or running your heart into the ground.
    You set the pace, and you control it, and you get to see the sights.
    My heart was never the strongest, I couldn't run long distances, but always ran, nowadays I just bike, and it feels GREAT!
    To anyone with joint pain, or not strong enough heart for marathons, I would go a simple way of riding a bike.

    I do jump rope Tabata and I can tell you that you can do it very well. You simply have to get the rope swinging in about the three seconds before your 20 second stint so that you're already jumping at full intensity when it starts. The jump rope guys have a 20 minute workout on it and it's as intense as you want it to be.

      Part of me likes the hostility to jogging. I used to get annoyed by all these people who'd brag about their workouts that involve "running" X miles a day. But then you look at these people run and see they can have casual conversations while running. I'm thinking, what's so great about your X-mile run when you could reduce the distance by 60%-70%, but increase your pace by 25-40% and sweat a lot harder? It's amazing how some people who swear by running are allergic to sprinting.
      I softened up my stance, though, because not everyone's life goal is to be an elite athlete, and that they just want to be healthier, and if jogging achieves this for them then who are we to tell them to knock it off. Plus, for some people, being outdoors and spending time in motion is the real gains. You can jog for 45 minutes and enjoy your surroundings and changing scenery, which is often a lot more feasible to accomplish compared to combining sprinting and walking.

      I’m training to join the CAF and you gotta wake up and do a 3km run most days in Basic Training and in general according to legend. If it’s in our soldiers workout regiment, it’s in mine. Sorry Jeff 😅
      But then again I’m not looking for gains or to lose fat, I simply need the endurance. The feeling after you almost collapse while basically gasping for air is a good one aswell, makes my brain go :)

    Treadmills are good for establishing tempo when you’re training for time. I definitely try and spend more of my running outside to get that real conditioning though.

      Most people that jog don’t go herd enough in other exercises. It’s all about when you go intense. Jogging is awesome but if it’s your only cardio it has its kimits

      You still should not "jog" like most people do and like Jesse did in this video. Running hard in intervals is going to beat that any day. Running long distance, steady state, on flat ground is high impact and low intensity, that's pretty much the opposite of what you want.

As in, the top programs and athletes train steady state multiple times a week, and sometimes multiple times a day. Why do you think you have more knowledge than the people dedicating their lives to coaching endurance sports? Every rowing coach I know (ex-olympians/college championship rowers mostly) live and breathe steady state.

      I absolutely love long duration cardio so I don’t understand why everyone is acting like hiit is the only way to go. I’ll choose a 45 minute jog over a 15 minute hiit anytime

      These videos are based on the assumption the goal is to train like a pro athlete or to significantly improve overall strength and health. So either you already have decent jogging endurance or it's just not enough to get the results you're looking for.
      If you just want to stay in decent shape, then a long brisk jog will do for most. But you won't get shredded.
      Pro athletes train harder than juniors just like elite teams in armed forces train harder than GIs, etc. They have to do more because more is asked/expected of them.

      Sprints are a great way to prepare for endurance too. Plenty of infantrymen use HIIT instead of just running long distances all the time.

    The running one doesn’t make sense to me because what about -long distance running-? It’s slightly more intense than jogging but nowhere near a sprint. It’s supposed to actually strengthen your mobility and muscles that protect your joints, and it’s more practical than a full on sprint which has a different aim

    He makes some valid points, but I'm going to go out on a limb and disagree to an extent. Most people aren't super athletes and have limited motivation. If they are still moving and exercising even in a non-ideal manner it is still beneficial. For example exercise bike and treadmill don't replicate the actual movements perfectly, but do them with good technique and you are still getting a workout. Likewise I don't think jogging is bad, plenty of studies have shown jogging to be good at improving both health outcomes and VO2 max. In fact I just finished reading a book on the merits of slow jogging. There is no real evidence that jogging is bad for joints (providing you run on natural surfaces). In fact if anything recent studies have shown it improves joint health. Similarly with Tabata, yes ideally people would follow the protocol exactly, but I will wager even skipping slowly for 30 secs followed by 10 secs rest will do a decent job at improving fitness for the average person as well as burning calories. I understand what he is saying, but what I'm saying is for the average person, provided they are sensible and use good technique many of those things aren't bad. I think the biggest danger is the number of people in the world leading a sedentary life style and not moving much at all, even low intensity non perfect exercise (provided it is done in a safe manner) is far far better than nothing. Setting the bar too high with respect to intensity is going to actually demotivate some people. If you are super fit and an athlete, then feel free to disregard what I just said. My comment is more aimed at people who are unfit or average fitness and are just happy to make moderate gains in cardiovascular and muscular fitness. But I encourage everyone not to believe what I or anyone says, and instead to read various studies for themselves.

    Love your videos and you always make really valid points, including during this video... but you're so wrong about jogging. It is much better for you than sprinting, and can even be considered a replacement for it if you're jogging really fast. Walking is absolutely amazing if you are overweight and can't jog easily - you're right about that!

    Treadmills and Stairmasters can actually be a very good and effective cardio workout if you use them to it's full advantage. Using a treadmill on max incline is very convenient than trying to find a hill (which will always be limited by its peak). Plus the cardio machines force you to keep going and never stop. Also, they have timers on them which works really nicely if you try doing interval training. Running outside can actually be bad for your joints in the long run (no pun intended) if you're running on hard floor like sidewalks or concrete. If you ever plan on running outside, it's much better to run on a softer surface like dirt, grass, sand, or in the woods. It's not natural for humans to run on concrete. Back then, our ancestors ran wild through forests and what not. On top of that, they mostly ran barefooted, which is a more natural way to travel. The position of your feet is altered from it's natural state when you wear shoes compared to running barefooted.

      I second this. I only run on concrete if It's part of a competition I'm running in. When I first started training, I ran on concrete and I got shin splints and ankle strains. Then once I started training on grass, never got injured again

    Try occasionaly paddling forward and backward on a elliptical with loose hands. It's a great balance exercise for the elderly.
    Also elliptical training is low impact on the knee. Which is not necessarily a good thing, but it is when suffering from arthritis.
    Finally you can do all sorts of zone- and interval training as you wish. I like training on the elliptical very much.

    Jogging is great. Love this channel & lifting but am so sick of muscle-building dudes hating on jogs. Sprints more often lead to muscle pulls and injury. Nice easy jogs for 30 min a day 5x a week and anyone can lose weight.

    All of these are still good for the general population. Carry on.
    If you hit a plateau, an athlete, or a God that can go from 0-10 quickly this advice is for you.
    Just ordered AX-1 after answering a few questions. Wish i would have picked the hardest one. My husband and I have been following him for years and his delivery is consistently good.

      Definitely not geared towards endurance athletes. My average caloric expenditure for a marathon is about 5,100 calories. You learn to not pound the ground every stride. As far as someone just getting in shape their sprint may look like a jog until they get stronger and lose some mass.

    There are merits for jogging. Even relatively short jogs (e.g. 10 -14 km). Every marathon plan includes them next to the long run, the intervals, the high-intensity run. and the medium runs. There are different training goals for all of those.

    Some times I slump over on the treadmill for a few minutes but I know that it's a break it's not like I'm under a delusion that I'm still pushing myself. I watch my heartrate the whole time and I only slump over until it starts dropping.

    When you say "be singularly focused", is that per workout or over a period of workouts until a certain short term goal is reached? Just starting out after losing a bunch of weight so I'm trying to come up with a home based workout plan for myself. I'm struggling a lot with how much information is out there and how much of it is contradictory or not concise.

    HIIT on an Airdyne is my favorite, followed by 30 minutes of sauna.
    I feel like my cardio increased drastically, and find my legs giving out before I’m really gassed out.

    As a cyclist jogging is important if you run. It is the same principle as zone 2 training on a bike. At least if jogging is understood as running at a pace you can sustain for a long time and doing just that. The duration is key here. It is also psychologically important because you can't train hard in higher zones every time. Ar least if you don't to get bored or dread your workout.
