Fyre Fest Employees Are Still Hurting From The Scam Festival

- Almost a year ago, attendees spent thousands of dollars to Attend Fyre Fest in the Bahamas. They were expecting a luxury music festival but ended up in something closer to a refugee camp with an EDM DJ
But the well-heeled college kids weren't the only ones affected by the scam. Festival employees and contractors, weren't just there for a good time. They were counting on a paycheck. And for many of them, the damage lasted long beyond an unpleasant weekend camping experience.
Here’s what happened to Darrell Thorne, an artist and performer who was contracted by Fyre Festival.

You guys should have focused more on the LOCALS. They're the ones who are truly devastated and have lost the most. The opportunities that this young man had to start over or to reclaim some of his lost,is out of reach for them.
I agree. Kimberly Foster at For Harriet did a review on both the documentaries and she devoted time to talkin about the locals.
If Kendal Kardashian gave them her $250,000. For her simple Instagram promo.
ALL WOULD BE RIGHT IN MY WORLD
wouldn't hurt if JaRule accepted sone accountability as well ...I 🖤
And he tried to steal someone’s van.
@@Emiliapocalypse Spill the tea
their island was fucked up by the last hurricane anyways, they have more important things to worry about.
2:16 holy shit, dropping acid in a place you're not familiar with, being dumped in a refugee camp, sensing the negative emotions of everyone realizing the festival is a bust, and seeing someone wearing these masks would be TERRIFYING
Someone’s never done acid
That actually sounds like the opening to an awesome story.
"I was convinced based on the circumstances that I had been bilked, but just then a twinkle caught my eye. I realized the acid was hitting, and decided to introduce myself to other bilkees..."
Extreme Nature
Have you ever had or been around someone having a bad trip?
Oh no, those sad rich white people, I feel 'soooo baaaad' for them.
No only if you let your mind set get in the wrong place
Damn this dude makes some sick costumes would love to see them used in a film or something
he's featured in season 2 of High Maintenance on HBO!
Adrianna Covone sweet I need to check it out then
Some of lost macks remind me scenes from the movie "Eyes Wide Shut"
@@adriannacovone4527 nice!! so happy he got to do that
He probably spent more time making those masks than what the whole crew spent on the festival.
Yes, show you what a real asshat Billy boy is, doesn’t it?
Facts
Sickening man
He’s so positive after the situation - even after being scammed, he remains positive and jokes about it. Needless to say, I think I need to be more like this guy.
good spirits for sure.
That’s because he’s still good financially. I’m sure he has a nice amount of money off the books. 😏
Agreed. Even though he was owed 20 grand, he had enough funds to ship several very large masks back home. If I was owed 20 grand, I wouldn't have eaten in months or I would have racked up amazing levels of debt.
I was thinking the same thing. Someone scammed me out of $400 once and I'm still mad about that. This guy lost $24,000; I think my issue is small things in retrospect!
Daniel Green you will find a nice amount of people like this in New York City. They claim to be broke or “ struggling” but shop everyday at Starbucks and Whole Foods. Then on top of that live in a very expensive area.
Don't ever trust any brand name that is misspelled.
The pancake art company that I work for is named Dancakes, lol. I promise we're not scammers.
Dana Baldus dancakes is a clever play on words, not a lazy ass millennial misspelling. Brands like Twitter and Lyft are simply misspells of existing words, so that they can secure a short domain name.
Dana Baldus btw, looks like you've got competition in my country dancake.pt
It's been around since as far as I can remember ;)
Not if you're Danish 😉
yeah, like citi bank.
Who goes to the Bahamas to go see Blink182... in 2017
a lot of influencers posts about the festival, that's why tickets were sold.
i’d spend thousands to go see them do a show in LA
Isaac Hubbard AlL Da SmAlL TiNgS
I saw them in 2002 pretty good show. Best of the groups they had.

You don't.
I hate scammers. I was scammed once by a party promoter.
Hi-Fi Insider That sucks my friend. I might be able to help you out. I just need $200 for the bank to release the funds then I can give you $20,000.

Oh man....dropping acid right before you land and then this shit happens?? I can’t imagine.....
Right!? LOL, the embodiment of the worst nightmare. "...excuse me guys, it's not happening." And then some several hours of paradise bad trip.
Lmao I know...those people will never be able to go to the Bahamas ever again. It is now Satans Palace
worst. trip. ever.
That doesn't even make sense lol..popping acid before the plane lands lolol
Invading Minds Better than dropping acid before taking off and riding out a bad trip in a cramped airplane.
He should be in New Orleans designing these masks for madi Gras, he’d make a killing. These masks are gorgeous 💕
Having Tea With the Devil almost said the same 😛
Even of Carnival in the caribbean he'd make bank making costumes.
Saw him on American greed he got screwed out of 20 grand. Yeah he should sell those masks I'm glad he's getting a lot of work after that disaster
These masks are.. 😎 fyre. 🔥🔥
Especially the unicorn one
I LIVE IN THE BAHAMAS‼️‼️‼️ I TRIED MONTHS IN ADVANCE TO GET TICKETS OR EVEN BE A VOLUNTEER 🤦🏾♀️‼️‼️ THANKFUL I SAVED MY MONEY 🇧🇸
Lucky
That was God himself saving you from this nightmare
Everything happens for a reason sista
Just goes to show that you can't believe the hype Especially when it comes to these "influencers "
I would love to see a story on the locals who were affected by this trash ass festival. The most important account of the event would come from the people who live on the Bahamian island of Great Exuma who worked to put this festival together. Vice needs to do a video on them.
They probably greatly benefited economically. All they have is tourism, and this was tourism. Otherwise, the island has no meaningful economy whatsoever, they produce nothing besides a trivial amount of food (too little to export). The Sandal's resort was completely booked and other resorts were at the same time; the whole island was booked and refugees from Fyre had nowhere to go. This means the whole island was raking in those sweet, sweet tourist dollars.
Without these tourists, the Exuma natives would be utterly impoverished. Thank god for tourists. This and many other island nations would be nothing without them, just impoverished, desperate backwaters.
As a Bahamian I'd love to see that also! I just was so worried that this debacle would give the country a bad image given how so many people unfortunately lost their money.
Farts McGee hmm sounds mildly racist....
Farts McGee yeah, they probably made some money on it but probably a lot less compared to what was promised. Fyre festival never paid them to use the area, resources, etc. Plus the festival goers probably caused some damage; the guy in the video even said he attempted to steal a van. He probably wasn't the only person there who caused trouble for the locals in order to benefit themselves. So yeah, they probably made some money but at what cost?
Farts: I grew up in a tourist trap. We had 3-5 festivals every tourist season. I didn't see a single penny of these "sweet tourist dollars".
A festival hiring locals and then not paying them what they owe is never beneficial for the ones who didn't get paid. Even if it brings in 10 times the number of tourists than before, it still won't mean jack squat for the ones who are owed honest pay for honest work.
His masks are amazing ! What a talent.
Lemme hot glue some scrap steel on a peice of a steel mesh and lemme get a few grand for it pls..
Really "talented" artist.. smh
Jealous kids in the comments.
Right you are friend-o. (coming from someone who also gets paid to make and sell costume head-wear)
Lots of jealousy
betchalife its that simple, yet you have no talent. I don't know what to say
Never go to the first outing of anything like this. They’re still working out the kinks and even in the best of circumstances, there will be hiccups.
Lesson #2: Never drop any acid before you get familiar with your surroundings. You need a safe(ish) space to trip.
K M There were no “kinks.” Billy is a conman.
tripping is a serious thing, weird shit always happens its why its imperative that you need to trip somewhere that wont pose any threat to your consciousness because you can and will go on time tangents
1:51 Love the description of the festival.
Step 1: Pop acid.
Step 2: Realize you've been scammed and you're stuck on an island with no food and shitty shelter.
Step 3: Yay!
who eats on acid anyways?
The employees I feel bad for. The attendees hahaha good trip for them.
why? any reason other than "i hate rich people because im envious of their money"
Most people paid between 1200 to 500 dollars actually, which you know for 2 weeks in the bahamas is nice
Well yea and they have horrible taste.
Well i mean being skeptical towards a new festival is good but from the looks of it the pr image the festival put out was professional
Dark Days would you rather they spend the money on gold or silver and store it away? At least with the festival that money is getting spread out to other people.
On a less depressing note, his artwork is absolutely gorgeous!
Hulu and Netflix have brought Fyre Festival back into the spotlight with their competing docs.
Don't miss VICE News' original account of the employees that were completely screwed by the festival fail.
Netflix doc is better for those who are interested in watching one.
Fifty 1 Fifty BASED
Vice sounds salty someone did it better than them lol
Netflix imho is better and they refused to pay Billy douche bag while Hulu did pay him just Hoping it’s won back by lawsuits .
Saw both, of you only have to see one go with the Netflix one. I preferred that one
Next time you hear about a festival you have to fly to and the headliners are from 20 years ago.. think twice.
And it's the first time it's held....and not one picture of the festival site posted. Yeah, hopefully this "festival" will learn some people to be a bit more critical

Those are awesome masks, though. Glad the guy is recovering.

idiots wouldn't think of that
I need to contact these festival goers. I have a large metal tower located in Paris that they might be interested in buying from me.
lmfao
how much for the tower?

The Technical Difficulties: Citation Needed?
They can put it next to the Oompa Loompa daddy is also gonna buy for them.
I'm willing to bet that a very large majority, if not all, of the people saying the masks suck have never made anything in their life. I used to criticize stuff that LOOKED easy too. Used to
FAT JACKSON I made custom license tags for years and I can appreciate what this man does. He's good looking too. Yep.
CZcams is a cesspool. The meanest / dumbest comments usually get voted to the top. Probably because kids and teenagers are all over this site.
The fact he's using material they use specially for cancer patients, shows he's really dedicated to how WELL a mask should mold to It's wearer and how COMFORTABLE it should feel for longtime wear. Any "cheapo" mask would feel so uncomfortable and malfitting it'd be off in the first 5 minutes.
@davidjacksonsr you do realize the mean comments could have been deleted
@davidjacksonsr YOU cant delete comments because you dont run the channel, the channel has people called moderates who have access to the account and can go through and delete nasty or inappropriate comments.
His masks are absolutely stunning and i wish him the best
What does Ja Rule think of this? Where is Ja Rule?!
I need Ja...
What is a ja rule?
it's the person you call to make sense of all this
Ja Rule : “Nooo Monica”
asking the real questions right here
won't someone please think of the workers :'(
did like.....you even watch this? independent contractors (freelance artists) are not the same as staff. his work was also featured on HBOs High Maintenance because he's an artist not actually affiliated with Fyre and their gross management. he was hired to be an environmental performer and wear his costumes, it's a common job for parties, clubs, and festivals- and he got scammed $24k. like? where is your confusion? ???
nah i was just shgitposting. You got trolleded
Sam Law yeah right
and what's with the children? won't somebody please think of the children!
Adrianna Covone like, can you like, you like, another filler word, like other than like, like? Is That like, a possibility, like? Come, like, on! Like...
People dropping acid at any events like this are crazy. Way too many people and way too much going on for me to ever be able to calm myself down if I start getting overwhelmed.
Fr. I freak at house parties. Just do molly at concerts/raves. Maybe you could get away w a low dose of shrooms or acid but idk
'Over 7 masks he created'.... so 8?
yep
Loooooool
Colin Allcars pretty sure they said 70.
8.5 bro....8.5
David Wright actually half masks are a thing. 😂 very well coulda been 8.5
They had the perfect chance to start PUBG real life battle royal. Such a wasted opportunity in my opinion.
or an acid and coconut water fueled island orgy that goes on for a whole week?
Smooth Mercenary real nicca
😂 👍
lmao awesome comment
Smooth Mercenary LMAO tru
He seems like a nice guy
minus the part where he admits to racism and trying to steal someones van
DJ SUPERPIRATE people do weird shit when their desperate. Also he didnt do that he just thought it. Never been in a long line and just thought "if only i could skip over all these people"?
aestre Probably wouldn't have this excuse for him if he were black though!🙄
I've been desperate several times in my life for money and NEVER ONCE did I think to steal from somebody, I simply did without.
Vicky Shad Yeah, Bullshit!
you are a holy person
I know this whole situation is serious, but I was laughing so hard when he mentioned kids popping acid only to land in the most chaotic hostile environment possible
The poor wealthy people stuck on an island wanting to party but ended up sleeping in tents with sandwiches for lunch...uhhh THATS CALLED CAMPING! BLOODY HELL! -2018
Cheryl Bloss you do know that most of those "rich white kids " were actually just college students .
If your idea of camping is getting scammed for 350, staying in a tent in a tropical climate rather than a forest, while eating nothing but sandwiches with no meats, but just a slice of cheese. ALSO, a single tomato with water. And let's not forgot a lack of fire, and there being wild dogs being more common than any forest animals. Then you've never had a real camping experience.
They should have swam back to America then, those poor unfortunate souls.
That's not what they paid for and not the point, jesus christ.
But they did not pay to go camping.
WOW, his masks are absolutely amazing!! I really liked that bug one we got a flash of and of course the unicorn.
Molly Moss beautiful. He’s very talented
Your Moms Hitachi wut
go watch her quality content and youll see for yourself.. also that unicorn headpiece was ridiculously stupid bet youd wear a rainbow poop hat too :|
i also like to creep on profiles
Mad Friend Profiles are public for a reason mate
kinda curious as to why they didnt interview some bahamians???
Justin Hoffer its fake man
thewiz412 what's fake
I imagine it's a lot cheaper to interview this guy than to fly to the bahamas?
Tricky Sixteen interview via video chat like Skype or something...
White people take first priority.
Thankful for the documentary on Netflix, a go fund me page is up for the workers who weren’t paid. Hopefully with that money they can get a fresh start.
I hope this guy is ultimately alright. He seems really positive and nice about the whole situation, and he kept things in perspective too. I feel like that’s kind of rare.
those masks give me night terrors. my mom was diagnosed end-stage cancer & had a tumor that spread to her brain. they put her on radiation treatment. she had to wear that mask, and they fix/screw the mask to a table then put you into like a MRI tunnel. it's absolute hellish horror for anyone with claustrophobia or anxiety issues. i could only hold her hand & sing Elton John to get her through it. i kept the mask - it is haunting but it is a small piece of her.
Beautiful but sad story!! Thank you
thanks friend. i believe she is in a better place. best wishes to you!
Love to you, and may the Light shine through the dark times
Your mum was very lucky with a son that sat with her and hold her hand and sing . so sorry you had to go through this. Sending some love and light
Bless your heart good man
WE GOT JA RULE ON THE PHONE
What a talented visionary! I hope he finds success from the disappointment that this whole thing turned out to be for him
I am so glad that this wonderful artist got a chance for some exposure after the nightmare of Fyre Festival. His designs and creations are nothing short of amazing!
"its not in his DNA" top fucking kek
you know why it was called fyre because everyone who went got burned
I own a business and feel the pain of being contracted and turning down other work to then not get paid.
Will there be a Fyre Festival in 2019? Where can I buy my ticket?
Loved this dude on high maintenance!
He was fantastic!
I thought so, yes!! He was awesome
i knew it! he looked so familiar!
Oh. He’s the guy with the bitchy, selfish roommate. Nice.
I thought thst was him! TY for confirming. Fabulous episode.
There were lots of signs it was going to be a disaster. I commented on promotions where I could and got screamed at relentlessly for even the thought it might not be legit.
It sucks, but you played yourself at some level.
I have friends that work festivals, and it's always a shame when this sort of thing happens. Because no, it wasn't just spoiled rich kids getting ripped off. Working class folks depend on these things too.
This guy gets it. Artists, especially full-time ones, seem especially vulnerable to scams like these, due to the nature of their paychecks. But, if he says there were NO signs anything was amiss even up until he left, I doubt he did his homework on the organizers.
Here's a good vid on it
czcams.com/video/UBPg5ftCMv8/video.html
Once people invest money in something it's hard to tell them that it's not gonna be as good as they think
Not to mention the ticket starting prices were only *500* dollars. A 500 dollar trip to the bahamas where everything is paid for is the most shadiest thing to ever exist
His talent is immense. These are works of
art man, beautiful.
Honey what happend - Lil B
TYBG
Wait so they just said “he won’t ever do that, it’s not like him!”
Judge just goes “ok sounds bout right”
Just further proof that there's a different set of "laws" for the rich and famous, then there are for the rest of us. And the punishments, if there even are any, rarely fit the crime.
Hey regardless of the festival and whatnot, this guy's masks are absolutely amazing
I want to buy one of his pieces, how do I find him? Does anyone know if he had a website?
Those head pieces are fabulous,beautiful.
"There was NO sign that anything was amiss" - There were SHITLOADS of signs for MONTHS that this thing was a huge scam. It's hard to feel sorry for someone who was so clueless.
Yeah and people feeling sorry for this pasty ass boi is enabling stupidity
Mind explaining what these signs were?
Everyone involved with this festival minus the locals kinda deserve everything for being drawn to such a vain and egotistical event
best head/face originals i've ever seen. r u still making these ? i'd like to purchase one...
This is like some version of Scooby Doo visiting Spooky Island lol
"dude I need some food, I need some food!"
I found this Fyre festival scam pretty funny tbh simply because they where young rich snobs.
Cesar Lua me too lol. Kinda hard to feel bad for A bunch of sheltered rich kids
Internet historian. He covers it quite nicely and unapologetic.
Actually half the tickets for fyre were 2 grand and you have to think 2 grand for a 2 week vacation in a foreign country is a steal
Mostly its just a bunch of rich people who lost an inconsequential amount of money (to them) and were inconvenienced for a couple days. But they threw such a hissyfit, it became national news lol
Bro level with me for real if someone said here is a 2 week get away to the bahamas for 2 grand all expenses payed and from all outlets did not look like scam would you not take it? (Ps you would not have the knowledge that fyre would fail) i would totally take that opportunity. also fyre was actively marketed to collage students and lower income people who though this checked out. Im not saying that they were smart for going i just think to say that the attendees dont deserve the backlash because they go scamed.
Your awesome and amazing you will get through that really terrible stuff. What a horrible way to learn. You are still shining so brightly 🌈
Love this interview
i hate myself for clicking in this
couldn't have happened to nicer bunch of people
valgehiir lmfao
Are u saying this cuz ur poor lmao
That's who usually gets scammed.
Too many people are too easily manipulated. They trust the news, trust the system, trust the government, trust their pseudo-doctor (because real M.D.s are scarce), accept lower standards, accept lower pay and accept higher prices.
Jordan Peterson calls them 'agreeable', others might call them 'nice'. I call them cattle.
Over-domesticated, not too sharp and first on the chopping block if anything goes wrong.
What a pathetic attitude to have - "ha those people are wealthier than me so I hate them". Truly sad.
It was pretty funny.
OMG his work is amazing
INCREDIBLE WORK! Wow.
Cool masks man
His masks are amazing!
Your work is so beautiful!
where could i find da backround music at 3:10
Just to note, most tickets for Fyre Festival were not thousands of dollars, but instead $500-$1000 as they sold most of them at an 'early bird' price.
That explains why some of them dont even look rich
I think this guy will be fine with vice's promotion of his work as that shit is dope
“Popped acid on the plane” - “and arriving to an alternate reality”😂
lol I remember the snaps from this festival lol
That guy has talent!
Expected more coverage on the locals??? Idk. Just me?
This guy needs a channel! I love his lewwks!!
he does amazing work!! i can't believe he had to deal with the Fyre Festival.

Not one mention of the drug use in the Netflix video.
Those people who attended where eating acid and molly like it was going out of style.
Let’s have someone tell the truth for once about these festivals.
They are drug frenzies. Period.
Gcal1956 Maybe cause the documentary was focused more on the scam part, not the people who attended.
To be fair that happens to an extent at almost all concerts/festivals, especially if they're catered towards young people. Everyone knows that and we don't need an expose. A festival that scams people out of a lot of money and delivers basically nothing does deserve a lot of attention though
Internet Historian did a better job imo. I appreciate the unique perspective offered though
This isn't about the fire festival, this is a bout a specific part of the story, not the whole thing.
hmmm , the name fire with Y should've been enough to alarm you from this scam .... lol
My favorite character on high maintenance ♥️
COOL MASKS 👍
This reminds me of the Tonga 2000 festival. The huge global telecast music festival in Tonga to kick of the new millennium. Same shit
This guys work is amazing!
Wow thanks VICE. I would never have known that scams affect people negatively.
why the hell do people keep saying the people attending were all rich kids? most tickets only sold for $350 which included literally everything. Sure, some tickets were like $10'000 but there's no evidence that anyone actually bought any of those tickets. I hate how people are saying that the people attending were just spoiled rich kids. No, they were normal middle aged college students who were looking to have a good time
sorry, i had a brain fart. middle class college students
So far I have read 3 articles on the event. 2 articles said the ticket prices started $1500 and one said $1200. I would say that most middle class college kids could not afford to pay for the tickets plus airfare to take a weekend off and go to the Bahamas. I would say at a minimum they would have to be upper middle class. The average middle class college kid graduating with 50-100k worth of debt cannot afford to do such things.
watch the internet historian video on the festival. as i said, the ticket prices included everything from food, to airfares, to accomodation which, to be fair sounds like quite the deal for a luxury weekend in the Bahamas and most people would (and did) jump at the opportunity. 3 articles probably isn't enough. the video i suggested explains the ins and outs of the festival pretty well including why it failed and many of misconceptions about the festival (eg. ticket prices)
Brock Bayley bruh 350 is still a lot of money lmao.
Brock Bayley I've never heard of a single one festival ticket that has ever included airfare on its price. I guess the video that u watched is not being truthful
Is that Sexy Vegan before the face tat?
yoooooooooooooooo
Beautiful Vegan Messiah
This is what it looks like to not be a victim and show true American fortitude ! I hope the best for them and their future endeavors! Keep fighting grinding and doing what you love
i remember hearing about this and i was like wtf
why
This guy makes amazing masks. Sad that MacFarlane was able to scam so many people and to endanger them.
Those masks are amazing. I don't think he's going to have any trouble recovering from this.
The art work is fucking amazing!!! Would love to see the headsets and masks at some real festivals
Dude that works for Fyre Media - "We flat out lied to the public about what we were giving them. That's Fraud."
Ja Rule - "That's not fraud. That's not fraud. That's I would call that false advertising."
Me watching the documentary - 😂😂😂😂😂
Does Daryl have an Instagram?? He seems like a super talented guy and I definitely want to support him, especially after hearing this. Great video, by the way! Fyre Festival is such an interesting event to analyze and pick apart how horribly it went wrong
Internet Historian!!!
Ready for those case studies, yooo.
new chapter, kudos
