How To Do An Oil Change (COMPLETE Guide) | 10th Gen Honda Civic

  • Here is a detailed breakdown of doing an oil change with a new filter on a tenth generation honda civic. This will work with the 1.5T and 2.0 engines.
    Make sure to use 0W-20 oil and I would recommend full synthetic. The oil drain plug is 17mm and is torqued to 30 ft lb. or 40nm. The 1.5T uses 3.7 qts of oil while the 2.0 uses 4.4 qts of oil.

    I'd invest in some proper jack stands. Those blocks of wood look pretty sketch.

    • @gillesthibault429
      @gillesthibault429 Před 6 lety +5

      You need a wooden step though, because the darn car is too low to the ground to climb regular ramps from the bottom (my experience with my wife's '18 Hatch.

    • @AOL0321
      @AOL0321 Před 5 lety +16

      Yeah, 3 more inches and you would have driven off the end of those stands, and probably crushed the underside of your Civic. Yes, use gloves too and replace the old drain plug washer with a new one. I put an old blanket or dropcloth underneath the oil pan area, to eliminate spillage of oil. I've had two Civic Si's and just leased my son a new 18' Civic Hatchback Sport. Honda still has not switched the oil filter to the top of the engine like my new GTI or the new Subaru Imprezas. So much cleaner! Come on Honda, get with the program!

      @rharris7426 Před 5 lety +2

      I wouldn't go under a jack stand. No safer than a jack to me. The wood does look a bit sketchy but better than many people use. 4 wheels on a solid base somehow then go under a car.

    • @TomXCZD
      @TomXCZD Před 5 lety +17

      @@rharris7426 There are wheels on that car, even if the jack stand/ramps fail you won't get crushed. You're only at risk of being crushed when the wheels are off. If you are so squeamish you won't get underneath a wheeled car supported by jack stands you are not cut out to do mechanical work.

    You should wear gloves, old oil can give skin cancer, also protect your eyes, always make sure the old seal from the previous oil filter did not stick to the engine.......remove the quantity of oil from the new 5 liters to make sure you don't overfill, use a funnel....put the hand brake and block one rear tire......SAFETY FIRST !

    #1 tip - cut plastic water bottle in half. Use top one upside down to catch first stream that usually shoots out missing whatever you placed under. This will help you direct the flow and costs nothing. As bottom cap part is narrow you can also stick it into the pan to let it drip. And the bottom part of the bottle - use it to catch oil from the filter and afterwards - you guessed it, let it drip.

  • @hpixley
    @hpixley Před 5 lety +58

    You should consider pre-filling the oil filter with oil, before installing it. This is so that when you start the engine for the first time with the new filter, you are not running the main bearings dry, while the oil pump is trying to fill up an empty oil filter. 03/26/19 HP

    Great video, I’ve been wanting to check out how to change my oil and reset the oil life on the dashboard so this was a lot of help. Thumbs up! But I couldn’t help but have an OCD attack when you didn’t use shop towels/paper towels when draining the oil. Also, I personally like to fill up the new oil filter half way before installing it. Lol. Also, you should always use a funnel when pouring the new oil in to prevent a mess. I’ve been doing my own oil changes and other maintenance on my cars since 2005 so I’m very knowledgeable about car maintenance. Anywho, I love those homemade wood ramps!

    A couple improvement comments:1 - get oil warm before changing, so that more flows out2 - wear a disposable glove to prevent your hand getting soaked in oil3 - after removing oil plug, open oil filler cap to allow air pressure to increase speed of oil draining4 - mention that you MUST replace the oil plug crush washer every time. Otherwise, you may over-torque the drain plug when you reinstall it5 - use a funnel when pouring fresh oil into engine to avoid a messy accidental spill.6 - take used oil to a service station that accepts it so you don't pollute the environment

      Mark ( and everyone to whom it concerns), Do everything Mark said and also: If you have car up on ramps you must chock rears wheels. Wear safety glass (daah)! Use oil filter socket to remove old filter but NOT to install new filter. Fill new oil filter with oil before installing. Use Fumoto valve instead of drain plug and never need a drain plug or crush washer again (nor will you run the risk of stripping threads).

    Warm the engine first. Oil drains better.
    Open the fill cap. Oil drains better (usually)
    Did you set the hand brake?
    Did you chock the rear wheels?
    Jack stands are not expensive.
    Wear gloves.
    Get a bowl to put screws in (magnetic perhaps) instead of letting them roll around the floor.
    Check for sticking oil filter gasket.
    Check with Honda: do you need to replace the washer on the oil drain plug?
    Funnel.
    Wait a few minutes before checking the level.
    No need to change the oil at 40% life left - waste of oil, filter and money.
    While you're there: check steering fluid, brake/clutch fluid, coolant and for that matter the windshield wiper liquid.
    How did you dispose of the used oil and filter?

    Harbor Freight has nice rubber gloves that are tough and inexpensive, just saying bro. :)
    Jack stands at Pep Boys are 19 bucks for a set! cheaper than the Synth oil.
    other than a Honda filter, have you tried the WIX filters they are excellent.
    2 great points, 1, lube the new filter gasket to make a better physical connection and 2, hand tighten the filter, to many people wrench that sucker on and crush the gasket or make it so tight that it takes a gorilla to remove the old filter.
    Overall not a bad video.

    hey Sooner Garage, thats actually clever, u made your own ramp, i dig it. I am wondering if I can do the same.
    Is there a particular safe wood i should use? did u just glue them together?
    Thanks

      I just used cheap lumber wood with wood screws. I think you could definitely do it yourself, it took me about 5 minutes to make them and I just used leftover wood from another project.

    You can cut the bottom off of a water bottle for quick easy disposable funnel. (Make sure it's completely dry)

    Run the engine after filling the car, check the oil again. You're probably about half a quart low. The filter sucks down more then you think. The recommended amount of oil is almost always with out the oil filter. So if the recommended amount is 4.7 it's probably really 5.0 - 5.2 with the the filter, depending on the size of the filter. They don't give you the amount with the filter because they vary in size sometimes. Different brands, aftermarket, in house filters. Some have more or less material inside them.

    I tried to change my oil for the first time and i feel humiliated, i couldn't even get the nut to turn, it's freezing out here so idk if it's due to the cold. I put everything back and now I'm back inside in my warm home, wtf man, idk how to feel about this shit no more

    I have a 2018 hatchback sport touring. I have had it for 2 1/2 years. The car has 37,400 miles. I have had some major issues. My master cylinder went out at 35,000 miles. The ac compressor & condenser went out at 35,000 miles as well and would of been around very close to $3,000 to fix. My lane keep assist always gets triggered by shadows from power lines. The dealership could not find the problem. So they told me to turn off lane keep assist. YES! THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME TO TURN Off A SAFETY FEATURE. Also the brake assist comes on when a dark spot or pot hole is in the lane. The infotainment screen some times goes black. In addition to all that my driver seatbelt feels like its sticking. When i buckle the seatbelt it feels like it doesn't want to latch. When i try to take it off it feels like its stuck and doesn't want to release the belt. Even though i have had these issues i love my car. It drives just like my old 2013 bmw 328i. Never had major issues with my bmw. But the bmw was falling appat pretty fast. The light fixture was falling out of the bmw trunk and the panels on the inside were coming loose. And the fake crome was peeling off. Also my window switches became unstable and were sinking into the door panel of the driver side.
