For those of you who dislike this video. Is it just becuse this lens doesn't work that well that you dislike it or just the general concept of "misusing" these lenses? Would you be interested in apsc lenses that perform well on larger sensors?
I dislike because you never turned on super35 mode
I did "here are the apsc crop versions of those same images, you do get a wider FOV but it really isn't usable because of the distortion and vignetting"
I initially disliked it because the answer is already in the title of your video so it isn't that informative. I rewatched it after reading this comment and then decided to like the video for all the effort and I like the idea of doing these tests.
Thanks for the feedback. Tis a fickle thing with the whole "I hate click bait, why would you do this" vs "answered in the title, video was unnecessary"
I didn't even think about that but that makes sense. Now you have changed the title of the video to an open question, I don't think that it will be seen as a clickbait. Anyway, I really like the video with the 10-18 since I already know it would work with some caveats. Since it doesn't really work with the 18-105 I wonder if it warrants a whole video about it (maybe combined with other lenses which do work), or more general, the video could be seen as a dissapointing message.
“But why would you do this? Because I can. This is CZcams. It’s a lawless wasteland”🤣
Absolutely love this video, quick and to the point. Not a moment wasted. Cheers mate!
the Sony a7iii is equipped with the Super35 mode specifically meant for native E mount aps-c glass and for 3rd party aps-c glass that 'play ball' with the Sony E mount system.. the only downside is that the images/video output has way less MB for editing.. however, if u in-cam with all corrections/compensation turned ON, there will be barely any issue watsoever.. cheers.. :)
Wow that is some heavy vignetting.
Thanks for the work.
I'm trying to do the same thing around.
I have an A6000 and bought the 70-300G Lens for the 300mm zoom-capabilities and I love the sharpness of the lens. Because it basically center-crops.
On top of that I can keep the lenses if I upgrade to Full Frame.
Now I will buy the Rokinon 12mm f2 soon.
But then I'm looking for another fantastic zoom-lens to cover the low end up to the 70-300.
Do you have recommendations on that? Looked at that 18-105 but I really dislike the Powerzoom.
I'm thinking of buying the 24-70 Zeiss OR the 24-105G.
Because I'm often reading negative stuff about the Zeiss-Sharpness, I'm really shifting towards the 24-105G.
Do you have a recommendation for that? Or anything else to cover zoom up to around 70mm?
What about 16-70 f4 or 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 on A7iii, just saw your video of 18-135 on A7iii(1st March 2018), you have spiked my interest on 18-135, coz the back of lense has rectangular shape cutout(on purpose by sony to limit APS-C lens on FF). What if its altered, will it eliminate or minimize Vignetting
Thanks CB for another installment of this interesting series (crop lenses on FF bodies). The 18-105 is one of the lenses I own for my A6000. I'm fairly happy with it simply for the usable focal range, but that's about it. I've been spoiled by the performance of my Sigma 30mm/f1.4, so all my other lenses fall short. I too am considering stepping up to a Sony A7iii and I was hoping I might get SOME use out of my current lenses, but the more I see these videos, the more I know I'll need to buy FF glass too. Ouch. Thanks again and keep the videos coming!
Freeeking love the intro😅😂 great video thanks for the insight. Defo want this more now after watching your vid
I rarely hit like button but I liked your clear direct and short but helpful style. Time is valuable thanks for avoiding me to make a mistake on a7r ii ;)
Thanks dude
How's it working in super 35 for filming?
Thank you very much for the video. That was what I wanted.
Thank you, Chris. This was interesting.
I like this video's, as i currently own alot of APS-C glass, and its handy to know wich ones are usefull if i would upgrade to FF later along the way. Altough i'm still thinking to get an A7r series, to keep still a good resolution in crop mode.
Which lenses do you own
haha, yeah mate I was curious to know about this lens in the Sony a7iii, cheers for the video
Thank you so much for this video. God bless you man! 😊🔥👍🏼
Thank you for making this video
Very helpful video, thanks.
Does work this lens in alpha a7ii ?
hey chris, great video. how do you get these super smooth movements when you show the details? from 0:23 on? handheld? good job!!
czcams.com/video/7raSuWTBjSE/video.html I explain how I get that shot in this video
Hi Christopher! Did you shoot the first broll clips handheld with a6500? May i ask you the lens you used and if you shot in 120fps too? Thank you for the interesting video!
The first b-roll clips were shot with a fluid head and at 24fps. I believe I was using the Tamron 28-75mm for those shots.
With the aps-c crop factor of the 18-105mm lens being equivalent to 157mm . Would this lens be good enough to film football from the sideline ?
Just barely, having something closer to 200 (300 with crop) would be preferred.
I use my Sony 10-18 mm f/4 on my A7III... Only for video and cropped mode, and its friggin great if you cant afford a fullframe widezoom.. I do agree its not a good option for photography since it will be "only" 10 Mpix, but for video its enough..
same idea sir
Can you make a video comparing the bokeh of the same setting and lens in APSC and Full Frame body?
While vignette not withstanding and flange distance compatible;
- Any 24mm lens on a Full Frame Body = 24mm FoV with 24mm DoF; (as reference/benchmark)
- Any 24mm lens on an APS-C Body = 36mm FoV with 24mm DoF;
- Any 24mm lens on a M43 Body = 48mm FoV with 24mm DoF;
* In short, with the same lens on smaller sensor camera, u'll get a tighter FoV but the bokeh will remain more or less the same as that of the lens on a Full Frame sensor camera.*
Due to the power zoom it is primarily for videos I guess and not for stills. Even on a cropped sensor it is not a splendid performer for stills, let alone on a full frame body. So it didn't really make much sense testing its photographic capability on a full frame body, though it could have been an interesting video if its (otherwise brilliant) video capabilities were assessed on a FF body - in cropped sensor mode.
Hahaha. "Because I can. This is CZcams... A lawless wasteland" hilarious
Digital Ninja® savage haha
Most simple savage intro I’ve ever seen in YT in a while…subscribed. 🤠
Greetings,
I have a Sony A6000, can anyone confirm that this sony 18-105 f4 lens does not allow lens compensation/distortion?
Thank you.
u seem chill asf hope everything is going well
How to zoom with this lens on a Sony a7 iii with Ronin gimbal ?
I dont get it. Im new to photography. the camera sensor is 35mm full frame...the lens says its 27-157.5mm (35mm Equivalent). How is this not the right size? What would I search for when shopping for an excellent lens for filming deer hunts? Self Filming, so I am somewhat reliant on auto settings as i do not have a lot of free hands at the time of the shot. Also require power zoom so i can zoom in and out with a remote.
finally, i found this video and you answer my question, thank you
I'm confused. I'm seeing other videos where the 35mmcrop mode in movie mode has no vignetting. Are you experiencing vignetting ONLY in stills mode?
I'm not using crop mode. Clearly an apsc lens will work with an apsc crop, but how does it work without the crop? That's what my video is about.
This lens for videos only on crop mode will make the a7iii acts as A6500S version S of a6500 as 10 MP sensor for better low light performance than A6500
So if you put the camera in crop mode, it will make lens/camera act normal? To still get the wide angle with no fisheye vignetting?
I know it’s been two years, but that’s what great about CZcams!
something like 20-70 F4 with internal powerzoom would be nice. a compact zoomlense for gimbals
I think you could do videos about FX+APSC lens like what Mattias Burling does with cameras, talking about how they feel about it and what uses you could get out of it
thank god i watched this video before wasting my money 💀💀 thank you sooo much for this
Thanks for the advice, was given the 18-105 with the second hand A7RII i bought, was trying to justify keeping it but will trade it in for the tamron.
which tamron did you go with
Loved the intro 😁
Thanks! A little edgier than I usually get. Glad you liked it!
the video with crop lens is great though, crop mode 4k is great
To me it looks like it could add an creative effect to the picture imo. Like at 1:25, I see it as an in-built framing. A bit like those pre-exposed films.
Nice Man
Would this lens do good for videos on aSony a7s2 to start shooting only videos is my main reason
It'll only work in 1080p because of the crop
Christopher Burress ok im a new camera guy just trying to do my own music videos to save mine is this a good choice for the money will it look good quality wise
Simply liked for your intro and specifically; "Cause it's you tube, and it's a lawless wasteland."
How to work sony a7iii this 18-105 lens sir
Watch the video?
Can you use this lense for sony a7r iv?
yes
Fs700 needed firmware update to talk to the zoom control and correct the distortion in camera wih this lense so not surprised the A7iii won't do that.
Спасибо мужик! Наглядно обьяснил разницу кроп обьектива на полном кадре.
Thanks, this is very useful. Some lenses work in a 27+ mm range in a full frame, but this doesn't work at all.
just shoot crop mode :D that's why i chose a7rii over a7iii recently so that i get 18mp image instead of 10mp with crop lenses
MyLifeFrAiur but why tho?
Nice to see someone that knows the crop factor! I have actually been surprised at how adequate 10mp has been in crop mode.
because i have a6300 and a lot of crop lenses :)
nice, i also shoot a lot with FF lenses on my a6300 :)
It would make a nice lens to shoot square-format content though
So let me get this right - You can have an e mount lens or an E mount FE lens - the latter being for full frame cameras such as the 7 series. The former for the A series...?
That's correct, A series being A6500 style cameras (not the a99 style cameras which take sony a-mount lenses, these cameras are outdated). E-mount bodies will fit both E and FE lenses.
I just wonder one thing that’s not related with your video. How you install your shelf led light, I really like the look of this hahaaa
nice vid bro..
Is there a wide angle lens for a full frame camera that won't have that vignette in the frame?
ah no. they all have processing to correct it. the e mount diameter is flawed design but damn the lens range is good!
I tried all my aps-c lenses out on my a7iii and yep, the 18-105 has no use on it! Fun video, Christopher!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Good video. 👏🙌👍👌
This lens was designed for the Sony FS5 camcorder and works very well on it.
IWWWHIYPTLOACTCWDFIYI is my favorite segment genre.
I spent about 2 full minutes trying to pronounce it for the video before I decided that wasn't going to happen.
What if you used it in cropped mode? It’s the most versatile aps-c lens for Sony with its zoom range and internal zoom which makes it a great gimbal lens.
Then it works as intended, this video was showing how it works when used not as intended
Christopher Burress thanks , is it possible to use clear image zoom to zoom in just past the point of vignetting instead of using crop mode? That way you would still be using the full sensor instead of crop.
Not on this lens to speak of. Maybe at 1.4x but at 1.5 you are right back to apsc size. Some apsc lenses even 1.1x will eliminate the vignetting.
I use this daily for video and photography on my A7Rii love it 18mp photos over a7iiis 10 no crop problem
Can I use this lens for a7sii?
@@hectorpixs4870 Sure, why not??
I love this lense on my A6500 good to know it won't work when I upgrade to the A7III thanks
Paparazzi Entertainment it does work in crop mode.
But then there isn't much of a reason to upgrade if you are just losing resolution and end up with the same sensor size. Selling the lens, spending another $200-300 and get a real FF zoom lens would be a more sensible solution.
no lose resolution...
If you are forced to use apsc mode it knocks you down to 10mp from 24mp.
❤️🙌🏻
That video saved me. I almost got that lens for my full frame Sony.
which one did you go with
Doesn't a7 iii have a super 35 mode?
Yes, but then the results would be expected and predictable. How does the lens perform when trying to utilize a full frame sensor behind it? That was the purpose for this video.
This lens is great on the A7RII and the A7RIII in cropped mode for video.
I don’t think people know that the cameras are better in cropped mode using video.
exactly
So can I use it for my a7sii?
I use my 18-105 with my a7 III it works out with my content great
Try lens correction in the menu...
Do the Sigma 56mm f/1.4!
You remind me of Titans actor Josh Orpin… who plays superboy🤣😍
I've heard worse!
Idk if the super 35 mode was bad back then … but today I see no difference with a aps c lens on a full frame … I did some videos with my old kit lens from my a6300 (16-50) on my a7iii and I found literally nothing wrong with it
This video isn't showing s35 mode, this is full frame mode, which nets a 1.5x wider fov if the lens has sensor coverage. This one does not but some apsc lenses do, so it's interesting to see just where it fails.
That area looks familiar. Is that by the craftsman axe throwing? 👀👀👀
Yes it is lol
@@ChristopherBurress what the junk! 😂😂😂😂 hahaha wow. I didn’t know you were local. Cool
That ones who don't like this sort of videos must be Leica users that consider photography inexpensive. An average person in Russia would have to stop eating and paying bills for several years to switch to Sony FE (a body and several lenses). So using APS-C or old Soviet lenses is a good choice for ones who can't wait more for trying legendary and pleasing fullframe.
Not to be nit picky 😉 but you got some small banding behind you just right where the shelves are because of the blue green fluorescent light
I missed that! I know these lights do it on certain colors. I think I was a little too underexposed this video.
@@ChristopherBurress yeah but your setups are outstanding, you do a great job
Thanks man!
Fucking Amazing. BRAVO!!, or Nah
.
As a lens for photos, pretty horrible... but for video this lens works beautifully. Being that it’s a power zoom, I would assume most people would see it as a lens designed for video. I understand this video is centered on photography, but a little quick to dismiss the lens as garbage, when if used correctly this little lens is a powerhouse on a full frame camera. Just my 2 cents.
It still cropped too much in video mode, pretty much had to turn on apsc mode anyways.
@@ChristopherBurress 27mm is a heavy clipping? I think not.
You can shoot apsc crop on a7iii
Yeah but what if it has untapped potential on a ff sensor?
Are these the results you get when In aps-c mode?
There are a few examples in the video of the images in apsc mode. Most of them are in FF mode.
I do not understand very well the reason for the video ... why are we going to use an apsc lens in ff mode? It is very big nonsense. If you are going to use an apsc on an ff camera, you should put the camera in apsc mode ... that's it.
The 18-105 in apsc mode in A7 III is great on video.
What if the apsc lens happens to cover the full sensor? You would never know if you never try.
@@ChristopherBurress to use the complete sensor, I will use a ff lens.
@@pepebenitezruiz perhaps you have many apsc lenses and upgraded your body to FF. Might be able to save thousands of dollars if you can hold onto your apsc glass a little longer.
The jokes when you can afford a9ii but only a 16-50mm crop lens
I'd rather sell this lens and buy 24-105 lens instead.
Same

@dobrovolsky bro you were born for more ambitious comments. Please try to write something more significant and inspiring. Come on man
The edited comment was appreciated, thank you. Time is the limiting factor here. I plan on doing more interesting inspired videos in the future, all in due time. Meanwhile I personally find it interesting as how these lenses perform and the videos go together quickly.
